It was written by Andrew Karam, a veteran of the U.S. submarine force who is now the Radiation Safety Officer at the University of Rochester and an instructor for Nevada Technical Associates, Inc. Karam is a good writer and he describes often tense encounters with Soviet submarines and surface ships. Although not all incidents in the book actually happened, it is based on Karam's time spent aboard the nuclear submarine "Plunger". The book also goes into detail about living and working in a nuclear submarine and includes a number of photographs. The book is more than 300 pages in paperback and is available for $15 from Nevada Technical Associates, Inc. Published in Australia in May, 2002 by Sid Harta, Publishers. Also available on Amazon.

Home The Health Physics Section provides radiation protection expertise on exposure to ionizing radiation, especially with regard to airborne radioactivity. The section maintains a whole body monitor (WBM) which enables humans to be monitored for internal radioctivity. The section is responsible for the National Radiation Dose Register which is a database for recording the ionizing radiation doses to all exposed workers. The information for this database is provided by the ARL Personal Radiation Monitoring Service and other monitoring services around Australia. The radioactive gas radon is responsible for a large proportion of the radiation background to which we are all exposed. The section maintains a Radon Test Chamber for calibrating equipment used for monitoring uranium miners. ARPANSA is designated the Pacific Region Radon Reference Laboratory for the International Radon Metrology Program. The section conducts research into radon and/or thoron levels in Australian homes, uranium mines and caves (where radon tends to concentrate and may effect underground tour guides). Aerosol studies are conducted to determine the properties of the airborne radioactivity and result used to in a respiratory tract model to determine the appropriate radiation doses from inhalation. The section coordinates ARPANSA's involvement with radiation emergency preparedness. Extractions: MASTER OF SCIENCE IN RADIOLOGICAL HEALTH PHYSICS The Department of Physics, in the College of Sciences, offers graduate study leading to the Master of Science in Radiological Health Physics. The curriculum combines theoretical, experimental, and applied radiological science courses. After graduation, students are prepared for employment as health or medical physicists, or may continue studies leading to the doctorate. Radiological health physics involves measurement and assessment of radiation exposure and dose to man and his environment. Responsibilities of a radiological physicist may include: development and enforcement of governmental regulations, radiation protection standards, consulting, research, and teaching. Care must be taken with nuclear reactors, high-energy particle accelerators, x-ray machines, and radionuclides used in biomedical research and therapy. Radiological physicists study the interactions of radiation in matter, with special interest in the quantitative determination of the energy absorbed. Also of interest are the analyses of the nature of radiation environments and the effect of radiation and radioactivity on life processes. Applications of this knowledge can range from the design of radiation detection instrumentation, to the establishment of radiation protection standards. Our program at San Diego State University incorporates faculty, laboratory facilities, and course offerings from; the Department of Physics, Department of Biology, Graduate School of Public Health, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. Also, our program uses personnel, equipment, and facilities at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, the Naval Hospital, San Diego, and various other sites within San Diego County.

The theoretical situation occurs when terrorists get hold of radioactive material from a hospital or food-irradiation plant, attach it to an explosive, and detonate the bomb in an urban area. The explosion spreads the radioactive material all over a city and exposes the population to radiation. Yet according to a health physicist, the biggest health risk from a dirty bomb would not, reassuringly, be cancer, but something more preventable: panic. A dirty bomb "would probably not lead to many, if any, cancer deaths," says Andrew Karam, radiation safety officer of the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. But if the public receives unreliable or exaggerated information about dirty bombs, Karam worries that "the use of a radiological weapon would result in many deaths in traffic accidents as people flee the scene, and possibly stress- and anxiety-induced heart attacks."
