5-0 out of 5 stars The Health Physics Textbook
The fourth edition of Introduction to Health Physics by Herman Cember and Thomas Johnson is a 21st century update to the classic Health Physics text. The new edition expands on the third edition with a content update, more problems, plus modern tables and graphics for better readability.

Chapter 4 On Radiation Sources has been expanded to include an extensive discussion on Machine Sources of Radiation. This new section covers X-Ray Tubes, Linear Accelerators, and Cyclotrons. Chapter 14 on Nonionizing Radiation Safety has been revamped. The chapter is a great help to health physicists needing to expand their skills in dealing with laser and ultraviolet radiation safety issues.

One of the text's strong points is the extensive problem set at the end of each chapter. Diligently working through all of the problems in this text is a prerequisite to passing both Parts I and II of the Comprehensive Certification in Health Physics Exam. The fourth edition of Introduction to Health Physics is a good addition to the libraries of both practicing Health Physicists and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new and improved version of a classic textbook!
I studied the 2nd edition of this text as a student and the 3rd edition preparing for both the CHP part I and II. I've recently read through this latest edition and am very encouraged by the updates that have been made. I highly recommend this book for new health physics students, HPs preparing for the CHP exam and anyone with an interest in learning about the field of Health Physics. You won't find another book that covers the full breadth of the field like this one. This 4th edition is a must-have for any serious HP's bookshelf!
-David Bisson, CHP

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book for all Health Physicists
I received my copy of the fourth edition of "Introduction to Health Physics" today and took a good look at it. Chapter two and three don't have a lot of substantial changes, but it looks like the rounding errors in the previous editions have been corrected. There are more homework problems in each chapter too.

Chapter four has a new section on accelerators, with a good explanation of each type. Chapter five again appears to have multiple numerical corrections made, and more homework problems. Chapter six (Radiation dosimetry) has more homework problems, and Chapter seven (Biological basis for radiation safety) has some sections on epidemiology now.

Chapter eight (Radiation safety guides) goes through ICRP 66, with an example for particulate and gasses. The examples for ICRP 66 calculations are clear, but it is obvious that calculating a lung dose with this technique will take a lot of paper!

It looks like there are a lot of updates to Chapter nine (Instrumentation), with more examples, but the photo of the neutron detection instrument is terrible. Again, more homework problems were added. (Makes me glad I am not a student anymore!)

I was glad to see that Chapter 10 (External radiation safety) has a section on NCRP 147. There are examples there too, and in my opinion the explanations and examples are better than the NCRP 147 examples.

Chapter 11 (Internal radiation safety) finally has a decent example with radon. The previous editions did not really have any calculations or examples, so it was good to see this addition. Chapter 12 on criticality remains relatively unchanged, but chapter 13 has new examples and more homework.

Chapter 14 has been expanded significantly. There is a section on UV that finally covers the UV equations on the ABHP part two equation sheet, and there is even an example. There are more laser and RF examples too.

Overall, it looks like the minor calculation errors that I have found in the past are corrected, lots of examples added, and as a sad note to students: there are a LOT more homework problems. If you are a practicing HP, or planning to take the CHP exam, you should get this book.

This book will not be on your shelf, you will be using it!

2-0 out of 5 stars New edition marred by typos and awkward editing
This new edition of the classic text is a disappointment, and it's use as a textbook is not recommended.

For this 3d edition, the list of typographical errors compiled by colleagues and myself stands at four pagesand growing.Errors can be found in the text, the chapter problems, andtheir solutions.Other solutions which are not clearly wrong mayinexplicably differ from your own solution at the second significantdigit.

Formulae are rarely derived from first principles. One exceptionis the change in wavelength for a photon undergoing Compton scattering froman electron, but, even here, a crucial equation (the relativistic energyinvariant) is conspicuously omitted, without which the final equationcannot be derived. The text does not even mention relativity in discussingCompton scattering.(The index does reference "Relativelyeffects" (sic) at pp. 4-11.)

Equations and formulae contain, attimes, an unnecessary proliferation of multiplication signs and units whichobscures the underlying physical principles and the simplicity of theequations themselves.Students are better served by a clear mathematicalpresentation of the underlying physics, rather than being dropped into themiddle of an obscure equation made even more so by the inclusion of severalconstants whose only purpose is to make the units work out. While any texton this subject must deal with the unavoidability of old and new units, mysuggestion is to derive the formulae from first principles and deal withthe units issue (which, after all, only amounts to including appropriateconversion factors) separately as examples or chapter problems.

Finally, the multiplication sign, "x", should be reserved forarithmetic and scientific notation, not symbolic mathematical equations. See, e.g., Equations (3.10), (4.31), (10.17), (10.32), etc., as exampleswhere the multiplication sign is unnecessary. The text also uses themultiplication sign even where numerical values are already set off byparentheses. The text's overuse of the multiplication sign gives the texta grade-schoolish flavor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Very good book. Highly recommended for someone (student or teacher) interested in this field of study.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
I was expecting a lot from this book since it is written by the very famous Michael Stabin, expert in the field of dosimetry. The book covers the subject of health physics very well, with a few typos here and there. But my biggest disappointment was to find the open-source web site wikipedia as a reference for many of the figures in the book. The author might have his reason for this, but I still think it is a little awkward for a book of this scope...

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed book
This is a much needed book. I good modern overview of what you would encounter in the field of radiation protection and dosimetry. The coverage of standards and their development is often missed in other works. Since you will spend a great deal of time referring to these standards knowing the actors and history is important. As someone in the field I would have liked to have seen a little more on international standards development. It was very refreshing to see a text where equations were defined clearly. So many physics books seem to revel in making you figure out that particulars authors flavor of equation definition.
I have found the book to be a great general reference and starting point for those new to the field. It is actually an enjoyable read. And having a joke thrown in once and a while was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-written book
This is an excellent book for students of radiation protection and dosimetry. It provides a great overview of health physics from radioisotope decay to non-ionizing radiation. The technical content is balanced with good practical examples. I would like to recommend this book for anyone studying health physics or preparing for the certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better tutor than my professor
I had a very uninspired professor that was mad at life and refused to explain concepts clearly. He would yell at us alot. Anyway I bought this book to prepare myself for exams and engineering certifications that require you to know Modern Physics and related concepts. BIG HELP!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help in your Modern Physics Course
Physics 212 (Modern Physics) is a required course for Aerospace Engineering Students at KFUPM University in Saudi Arabia. I bought this book instead of Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) as it was out of print when I needed to buy it. Only 107 out of 527 pages of this book, which I bought, covers the chapters related to modern physics. Therefore, it does not, to my way of thinking, worth to buy it if Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) is on stock. However, if this book, which I did not buy, is out of print. Then I have got another talk.

Schaum's outline Beginning physics II: waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics explains modern physics concepts very well indeed.More importantly, it solves problems clearly. Moreover, it helped me a lot in doing my homeworks problems quickly. Finally, it has a lot of solved problems of different ideas that I did not find in the textbook I used for this course, which was Modern Physics (ISBN 0030015472).

I strongly believe that you can make use of this book not only in your modern physics, but also in freshman physics courses as it covers topics such as waves and electromagnetism, which I had already studied in my freshman year physics courses. So, this book could be helpful for you inmore than two physics courses and, in that case, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. In addition, it is possible that you find Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) to be not good. Then, in that event, you know the alternative: Make a beeline to this book.

(Dear readers: Please note that I have rated only the modern physics chapters of this book). ... Read more

The second edition of this book has more of everything in it! The solutions to all of the homework in the 4th edition of "Introduction to Health Physics" are given in a step by step manner that is easy to follow. Plus, I discovered that there are many problems solved using two or sometimes three different methods. This book is a great reference for health physicists or anyone studying for the CHP exam. The one problem that persists is that occasionally some answers are different from the values given in the back of the textbook, usually by a decimal, but it is only a minor annoyance. 4-0 out of 5 stars Practial text to have
Physics of Radiology isn't as complete a text as Martin's, it seems more like a handbook than a physics text, but it is definitely useful and is full of examples that I can't find in other books. It's a little difficult to read straight through because of the visual format (it looks like it was written on a typewriter), but the examples are great references. I would have liked it if the authors used units more often, so that I could more easily adapt the examples but in all, it was a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars clasic work
A must book for students of medical physics. Gives basic knowledge in a easy to understand style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the Medical Physics student
I bought the new (4th) edition, having already read (and liked) the 3rd. For a physicist, the way Dr. Khan shows the concepts of Radiotherapy is very clear and he goes enough in depth (for every typical Radiation Therapy university course).
The main differences (with respect to the previous edition) are the brand-new graphics (with colour tables and summaries at the end of each chapter), some updates in the new techniques of 3D-CRT and IMRT and new chapters about IGRT and Hadron Therapy.
The first chapters are the same (and some sentences sound quite old-fashioned and outmoded, nowadays); and also the (very) few mistyping errors found in the 3rd edition (sometimes also in the equations/graphs) have not been corrected. Some pictures are not referenced correctly.
But, despite these comments, the book is great: someone described it as the "Bible" of Radiation Therapy and I definitely agree. To Medical Physics students, it gives a thorough introduction to principles and applications of Radiation Therapy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst text book I have come across
This book makes studying frustrating. Most concepts are poorly explained, the author dumps formulas out of nowhere, and uses partial explanations... when he dares trying to give some. In early chapters, the author uses materials that are introduced in later chapters, which makes things even more confusing.

This book is good to be "learned by heart" for the board exam and then forget about it. For a fifth edition, I would have expected something of much better quality. Yes, it is the bible of physics for radiation therapy; perhaps because there is nothing else out there.
Please, would anyone produce a text book of better quality ? The task is not so difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly Written
As a first year medical physics student, this book seems to be very well written.Khan explains things very clearly and summarizes information from Johns and Cunningham very well.It seems like this would be a very good reference book. The diagrams are also quite illustrative.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather buy Bentel,
This is book goes too deeply in one subject but then not in other, Author is all over the place, and many time gives outdated, useless information and then at the end of the chapter, suggestes "by the way no one uses this method anymore"

4-0 out of 5 stars ABR Physics
This book offers good overview of diagnostic physics and radiation safety.Although it's a good resource, this book doesn't help much for studying for the ABR Physics 1 exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great option when you review for board exam.
You need to read bushberg first at your convenience but when it is close to the exam, this book is a great option to just review topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars 2d edition was better
While this of course is more up to date the 2d edition has a better flow and was structured better. Also the figures in the 2d edition were better.

4-0 out of 5 stars good outline
In outline format.Good when supplemented with Bushberg. On its own, not sure it is self-explanatory.Some of the information is outdated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Superb. A must for any Radiology Resident sitting Exams
Although it is a must for any Radiology Resident preparing for major board exams, I think it is also helpful to any doctor who wants to brush up, seek clarifications or gain some understanding on the matter. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the NM Boards
After taking the NM boards, I realized that this book was absolutely useless. Cherry and Phelps' has all the physics you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, Concise and comprehensive
I would say it again short concise and comprehensive
Very useful to study for the nuclear cardiology boards

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice and useful book
The book reviews the basic prerequisites for physicians interested in nuclear medicine. It is not complete and the image acquisition and processing part for SPECT imaging is sparse, but it's a very nice little book. I used it to prepare for the nuclear cardiology board certification exam and I found it very useful, although it is geared more towards general nuclear medicine. The book is clear and concise and the questions at the end of each chapter are extremly helpful. ... Read more
