EM.html The electron microscopy and Xray Diffraction facility offers services to the academic and industry communities and informs about facilities, services and hourly user fee rates. http://www.physics.bc.edu/EMXRD/index.html
Extractions: The Electron Microscopy Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that provides powerful techniques for characterization of the microstructure and chemical composition of materials through electron imaging, electron diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) from minimeter scale to nanometer or atomic level. This laboratory is a multi-user, interdisciplinary facility that is open to students, staff and faculty at Boston College, as well as to users and scientific collaborators from other institutions. Access to the instrument is by arrangement with Dr Jianyu Huang (Lab. Manager) or Professor Zhifeng Ren . For users who are interested in being trained to use the instrument themselves, we offer two continuous courses (Electron Microscopy I-Fundamental Theory, Fall Semester ; Electron Microscopy II-Experimental, Spring Semester ) at a graduate level.
CSC Visualization Group electron microscopy Tomography (EMT) of DNADepleted Human (HeLa)Cell-Line Chromosome. The information shown here was presented http://www.csc.fi/jpr/emt/movies/chromosome.html
Extractions: CSC, Espoo, Finland Metaphase chromosome preparations from Human (HeLa) cell-lines, were collected and fixed according to conventional cytogenetical methods modified for electron microscopy (EM). Before processing to EM the preparate was digested with DNase which removed all DNA detectable by the DNA-specific DAPI fluorescence. Electron microscope picture series taken at angles of +-60 degrees with 3 degree increments is shown below. The pictures shown here have been aligned (see e.g./2/) as regards to rotations, translations, and scaling using colloidal (15nm diameter) gold particles as reference points. After the alignment the reconstruction was made using the weighted back projection-method. The EMT was fulfilled with a EMT-program KIT developed by EMT-group (Ulf Skoglund et al.) at Dept. of Cell and Molecular Biology, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. One picture of the series zoomed here.
Food Microstructure And Microorganisms Current history of food structure studies in North America with links to structures of foods, foodborne microorganisms, electron microscopy techniques used in food science, and contributions by guest food microscopists. http://anka.livstek.lth.se:2080/foodmi.htm
Extractions: Photo: Eric Johnson As the author of this site, Milo Kaláb welcomes you to view foods, particularly dairy products, as they appear at high magnifications under electron microscopes. Structure is a very important attribute of foods. Cheese, pork roast, bread, ice cream, and many other foods are characterized not only by their different compositions but more evidently by their microstructures. Interestingly, more than 30 years ago, the author was asked to investigate the feasibility of processing milk powder into a product resembling a wiener ("hot dog"). It became clear from several experiments that a food based on protein in globular form (milk) would require sophisticated technology to produce fibres which are characteristic of meat products, including wieners. Electron microscopy images obtained by a biologist captured the attention of Milos to such an extent that they have changed his career for the rest of his life. His biography lists some of his most important scientific papers.
