In the event of a "real" oil spill, PORTS would provide similar projections maps to aid authorities in containing the spill and anticipating its progress. A more detailed Lagrangian trajectory scheme, using output from a modified version of ECOM-3D and tying output into Florida Department of Environmental Protection's GIS resources-at-risk database, is currently being developed. This will allow authorities to quickly identify critical habitats in Tampa Bay threatened by an oil spill. Bartow oil spill simulation after 2 hour. Bartow oil spill simulation after 12 hours. Managing Fuel Oil Spills: Home Cleanup
    Dawn Errede and David Crisman
Fuel oil spills typically occur in the fall at the start of the heating season, when oil deliverers are likely to be new and unfamiliar with the homes they are serving. Homeowner changes could also lead to confusion at oil-delivery time. The spills typically happen in the basements of homes from overfilled tanks or through fill pipes that have no tanks attached! Other spills have occurred when oil was mistakenly dumped into septic tank vents or drinking water wells. Cleanup costs will be paid by whoever is responsible for the spill. If lawyers are involved in determining responsibility, costs will be even higher. Therefore, it is particularly important that you do what you can to prevent spills from happening:
    • If you remove your fuel oil tank, be sure to also remove the fill pipe. Call your oil company to cancel any future deliveries.
    • Do not put an oil cap, or anything that looks like an oil cap, on septic tank vents, drinking water wells, etc.
    • Keep tank caps tightly sealed except when filling or emptying the tank.

The surface dimensions of a discharge plume, as well as the source, can be identified and measured if it contains suspended material, such as hydrocarbons, sediments, bubbles, or dye. The effectiveness of containment methods can also be assessed using satellite imagery. 2.8-meter multispectral imagery, sharpened with 70-centimeter panchromatic, will be able to be used to identify and measure the surface dimensions of an oil spill.

Major oil spills still occur at irregular intervals. Analysis Related indicators Factsheets to download [Click the thumbnail to view a large version of the image] Oil spills above 7 tonnes per spill Source: Eurostat, based on data from ITOPF Note: The mass of oil spilt is approximate, as some of the records do not contain the exact amount of oil spilt. The amount spilt from tankers in the seas around the EU appears to be decreasing, despite the increase in the marine transport of oil. This is possibly because of increased safety measures, resulting in part from increasing public pressure following well publicised accidents in recent years. However, the data does not include spills and discharges of below 7 tonnes from tankers and other shipping and is likely to be an underestimate because of unreported and undetected spills. Following the ERIKA accident off the coast of France in 1999, the European Commission proposed reinforcing the control of ships visiting Community ports. It also proposed banning oil tankers with a single hull (the ERIKA was such a tanker) from EU waters and applying the same timetable for phasing out single-hull tankers as was adopted in the USA after the Exxon Valdez oil spill (2005, 2010, 2015, according to tonnage).

How do you clean up an oil spill?
Peggy gets a progress report on the clean up of one of the most well-known oil spills, the Exxon Valdez.
Segment length: 9:30 Insights When an oil spill occurs, often due to a ruptured oil tanker or leaking oil rig, people around the world are awed by the damage to the environment. Many oil spills are caused by human error, but there are also naturally-occurring oil spills, such as seepages from oil deposits beneath the ocean floor. Regardless of their origins, oil spills have an impact on the environment. The initial impact of an oil spill on the environment is familiar to those who hear about the event and see its effects on the evening news: a film of oil spreading across the surface of the body of water; oil-stained beaches and shorelines; waterfowl and marine mammals coated with oil, struggling to survive; and the carcasses of wildlife littering the shoreline. The environment sustains some of its most visible damage within the first few days or months of the spill. But what are the long-term effects of a large spill? Some evidence suggests that the oil from the Exxon Valdez spill may have entered the food chain, and that the crude oil itself could continue to wreck havoc with the environment. Since oil floats and crude sinks, both the surface and the bottom of the ocean ecosystem could be affected for a long time.

    http://www.weta.org/potomac/learning/lessons/lesson7/
    Overview
    Materials
    Procedure
    Objective:
This lesson will show students how to create and clean up a simulated oil spill. Students will learn and understand some of the various methods used to clean up oil spills along with their risks and benefits. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), almost 14,000 oil spills are reported each year in the United States alone. Most of these are relatively small and are cleaned up by the party responsible for the spill without attracting national headlines. Several techniques have been developed to control spill and minimize their impacts on human health and the environment. Mechanical containment or recovery is the first line of defense. Oil is physically restrained using an oil boom to keep it from spreading. Then skimmers actually remove the oil off the surface of the water. Some skimmers act as a type of vacuum cleaner, pumping the collected oil to a storage tank. Others blot the oil from the surface of the water and then have the oil squeezed out or scraped off into a recovery tank. Quick containment and recovery of spilled oil can be effective. In 1993, rupture of an oil pipeline in Virginia released 407,436 gallons of oil. This spill affected nine miles of Sugarland Run Creek as well as the Potomac River. Use of booms, skimmers, vacuum trucks, sorbents and a temporary pipeline to direct recovered oil into tanker trucks resulted in the recovery of 372,498 gallons (91%).
