5-0 out of 5 stars Great with oil spill lab
This book is a perfect hook for the classic oil spill in a pie-pan simulation lab. Stop reading aloud before the clean-up methods and have students explore their own clean up theories. Then debrief the lab by reading the rest of the book aloud and discussing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with lots of great info
We just read this book as a read aloud for science in our homeschool. We learning alot about oil spills and the damage they can cause. At the end of the book was the idea for kids to write to Senators about laws for oil tankers and such. Product Description
Oil Spill Environmental Forensics provides a complete view of the various forensic techniques used to identify the source of an oil spill into the environment. The forensic procedures described within represent various methods from scientists throughout the world. The authors explore which analytical and interpretative techniques are best suited for a particular oil spill project.

This handy reference also explores the use of these techniques in actual environmental oil spills. Famous incidents discussed include the Exxon Valdez incident in 1989 and the Guanabara Bay, Brazil 2000. The authors chronicle both the successes and failures of the techniques used for each of these events.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a student or a scientist who is specializing in oil spill investigation forensics? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Zhendi Wang, Scott Stout and other authors too numerous to mention, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows the forensic techniques used in oil spill investigations.

Wang, Stout and other authors, begin by describing the appropriate methods to characterize the oil spill site in terms of environmental and safety issues; the survey tools that have been developed to define and describe the spill site and the affected area; sampling considerations for spills where the source is known; and, for mystery spills, and data management techniques to capture, organize, and present the results of the investigation. In addition, the authors briefly focus their discussion on a description of biomarker chemistry. They also provide recommendations that are directed particularly toward the characterization of PASHs for forensic purposes of any petroleum-derived pollutant that is likely to be encountered mainly in the marine environment and that arrived there through accident or oversight. Then, they show you why that under most circumstances, stable isotope ratios are changed much less by environmental alteration than are molecular compositions. The authors then focus on the emerging European Committee for Standardization protocol. Next, they discuss the development and filed validation of a quantitative chemical fingerprinting mixing model approach that will improve the resolution and accuracy of statistical correlations when mixing. Then, they describe the development of tools that are used for oil hydrocarbon fingerprinting and spill source identification. The authors continue by focusing on the forensic chemistry of HFO. In addition, they address the fundamentals of hydrocarbon biodegradation, especially of the liquid fossil fuels, and attempts to bring together conclusions from two rather disparate areas of research. The authors also discuss thephysical processes altering hydrocarbon composition that are associated with each of the main routes of hydrocarbon exposure for biota, which determines the degree of source-specific information retained by accumulated hydrocarbons. Finally, they provide the forensic investigator with a brief overview of present oil spill modeling capabilities. The authors then review remote sensors for forensic application to oil spills.

This most excellent book has looked at methods and factors affecting chemical fingerprints of petroleum to non-chemical oil spill identification techniques. Perhaps more importantly, this book will provide students and scientists with ready access to a comprehensive overview of oil spill fingerprinting and source identification! ... Read more

Product Description
On April 20, 2010, the gigantic drilling rig Deepwater Horizon blew up in the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven crew members and causing a massive eruption of oil from BP's Macondo well. For months, oil gushed into the Gulf, spreading death and destruction. Americans watched real-time video of the huge column of oil and gas spewing from the obviously failed "blowout preventer." The evening news showed heart-rending images of pelicans, dolphins, and other Gulf wildlife covered in oil. What has been missing until now, though, is a book that tells the larger story of this disaster. In Blowout in the Gulf, energy experts William Freudenburg and Robert Gramling explain both the disaster and the decisions that led up to it. They note that—both in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere—we have been getting into increasingly dangerous waters over recent decades, with some in the industry cutting corners and with most federal regulators not even noticing. In the process, the actual owners of the oil—American taxpayers—have come to receive a lower fraction of the income from the oil than in almost any other nation on earth.

Freudenburg and Gramling argue that it is time for a new approach. BP's Oil Spill Response Plan was pure fantasy, claiming the company could handle the equivalent of an Exxon Valdez spill every day, even though "cleaning up" an oil spill is essentially impossible. For the future, our emphasis needs to be on true prevention, and our risk-management policies need to be based on better understandings of humans as well as hardware.

Blowout in the Gulf weaves these failures, missteps, and bad decisions into a fascinating narrative that explains why this oil spill was a disaster waiting to happen—and how making better energy choices will help prevent others like it.

Freudenburg and Gramling are the authors of Oil in Troubled Waters: Perceptions, Politics, and the Battle over Offshore Drilling. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Looking Through Your Rear View Mirror
I was on shore when I saw the Deepwater Horizon burning on CNN.I mentioned that the ocean was the only thing that was going to put that fire out, which it did about 4 hours later.I've been waiting to read a book-length exposition of the chain of human failures leading to what I knew then was going to be an area problem for twenty years. This is not the book.
This is a good collection, all in one spot, of the author's collection of 3x5 index cards, loosely organized to show the historical development of the extraction of natural resources for our use here in America, and the failure of responsible management along the way.The truth is that engineering resources have provided an amazing opportunity these past hundred years for people and companies to supply convenience and simultaneously earn mind boggling sums of money, and that opportunity has been largely unrestrained up to now.
I'm still looking for a book that can give us a responsible path forward.I can recommend '$20 per Gallon' in this genre of work, or the biographies of Howard Hughes or Armand Hammer for more background information. If you haven't read through the 'Confessions of an Economic Hitman' series yet, your time and money would be better spent.
As more information on the Deepwater Horizon comes out in various courts, I expect we'll see dramatic changes in practice and oversight. ... Read more

Product Description
In the early 1970s, Alaska Senator Ted Stevens promised Cordova fishermen "not one drop" of oil would be spilled in Prince William Sound from proposed tanker traffic and the trans-Alaska pipeline project. Fishermen knew better. Spanning nearly 40 years, Not One Drop is an extraordinary tale of ordinary people who take on the world’s richest oil companies and most powerful politicians to protect Prince William Sound from oil accidents.

Author Riki Ott, a rare combination of commercial salmon "fisherma'am" and PhD marine biologist, describes the firsthand impact of this broken promise when the Exxon Valdez oil spill decimated Cordova, Alaska, a small commercial fishing community set in 38,000 square miles of rugged Alaska wilderness.

Ott illustrates in stirring fashion the oil industry'’s 20-year trail of pollution and deception that led to the tragic 1989 spill and delves deep into the disruption to the fishing community for the next 10 years. In vivid detail, she describes the human trauma coupled inextricably with that of the Sound's wildlife and its struggle to recover.

Contrasting hard-won spill prevention and response measures in the Sound to dangerous conditions on the trans-Alaska pipeline, Ott critically examines shifts in scientific understanding of oil spill effects on communities and ecosystems, exposing fundamental flaws in governance and the legal system. Her varied background, professional training, and activist heart lead readers confidently and clearly through the maze of laws, back-story, and government red tape as large as that of the five billion dollar lawsuit itself, instilling a new-found sense of understanding of this environmental tragedy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for the Gulf of Mexico citizens
Dr. Ott's life story is interesting and compelling. The parallels of what happened in Alaska's Prince William Sound due to Exxon and what is currently occuring to the coastal areas of LA, MS, AL and Florida is chilling. This book appears to be the blue print of what we can expect from BP, state & federal government....and the forecast is dire. It's an interesting read. I felt compelled to purchase mulitiple copies in order to "spread the word" to my coastal community. Dr. Ott speaks to the grim impact of oil (and oil dispersants) on the fishing industry, the environment (short and long term), tourism, physical and mental health issues of the citizens of Alaska. If I never hear the words "Drill, Baby, Drill", I'll live a long and happy life. British Petroleum is following Exxon play by play. "We will make this right". Exxon issued hard hats to clean up workers rather than respirators, ditto BP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book
I read this book for a presentation that I had to do for my MBA program, I never intended to like it.The book was written so that I could understand it, not all scientific terms.I feel for all of the people of Cordova, I had no idea that this was still going on, or that they got a really crappy deal from the US Government, the same government that should have protected them.Riki made everyone so real, and you can feel for them with every new devastating development that "The Big One" brought to them. Now in light of the BP Spill in the gulf I wonder when people are going to realize that water and oil really don't mix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not One Drop???Of what???
The book was very attractive in topic because of the effect on both our own need for fuel and the means of how to do that safely. The author was very well fitted for the topic and I learned much of the oil industry and the needs of concern thereof.
The collection of facts regarding this industry and the deeper fare of the community in affect was well shown and displayed in good order to understand fully of the title.
However, as the story continued I was finding more of the technical and legal topics than I cared to hear and began to wonder these were the "drop" also related to law?
My best congradulations to this author for the book and her future in her work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't hold my interest
I didn't get too far into this book. It got off to a rambling start, and I found myself wondering when the author was going to get to the heart of the story. I didn't get too far.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Exxon Valdez disaster, redux.
I've been working on this book for a number of months. It's just not a "sit down, and read it from cover to cover" type of book.

Not One Drop is not a book about the Exxon Valdez wreck, although the spill is central to this story. It's not a book about Cordova, Alaska, although Cordova also is central. It's not a book about salmon, herring, fishing, Alaskan politics, oil extraction and removal in Alaska, tankers, government policies, the legal system, or corporate ethics, although all of these topics are covered in this book.

This is a book about author Riki Ott's growth and development, her self-discovery, just prior to and twenty years after the grounding of the Exxon Valdez. The title, by the way, comes from then-Senator Ted Stevens' claim that not one drop of oil would touch the water of Prince William Sound.

Well, technically, 10 million+ gallons wasn't "one drop."Steven's was right about that.

After receiving her PhD in marine pollution, Ott decided her life needed to revolve around salmon fishing in the Cordova area.So she was at ground zero when the Exxon Valdez ran around.Ott writes about the efforts of both the company and community in cleaning up the spill, but a good deal of the book is about the disparity between the company and the community in declaring the spill cleaned up and the economic distress resulting from the spill considered over and done with.

Needless to say, there was disagreement on both topics.

Ott reviews the reports, the studies, and the judicial proceedings revolving around the spill. She discusses the impacts on the herring and salmon fisheries, on sea otters, and on the biodiversity of the area.

Riki Ott relives the court and hearing battles, which included wire-taps, spying, arrests, and engineered misinformation.

What she also does is discuss how the spill changed her life and the lives of those closest to her... the human cost. This human cost was never allowed to be part of the damages equation, and included suicides, bankruptcies, divorces, the post-traumatic event disorders, and more.

I believe this book really is about the human flotsam and jetsam resulting from the spill. There is a lot to be sad and angry about.Legally, it appears, the "corporate entity/citizen" has the same standing as, say, Ott's friend Linden, whose life is chronicled over two decades. But corporations have millions to invest in lawyers and legal proceedings.

Linden couldn't pay the interest on her seine permit.

So Not One Drop is the story of an environmental disaster and its consequences from an insider's point of view.Exxon hasn't yet written its story... and don't hold your breath waiting for it.

By the way, contemporary tech culture uses the term "Valdez" (in this case, rhyming with "sleaze"), to mean an accidental release of a large quantity of private or privileged information. I think Ott would approve.

As I stated, this was a hard book to maintain a high and consistent interest level.I read an ARC; it would have been wonderful for the book to contain photos, and I hope they are in the final edition. This book will be required reading for those studying the event and its ramifications.Let's hope somebody learns from it. ...
