REMARKS BY PRIME MINISTER YITZHAK RABIN
on Receiving the Nobel Prize for Peace
Oslo, December 10, 1994
Your Majesties,
Esteemed Chairman and Members of the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee,
The Honorable Prime Minister of Norway, My Fellow Laureates, Chairman Arafat and the Foreign Minister of Israel Shimon Peres, Distinguished Guests,
Since I don't believe that there was any precedent that one person got the Nobel Prize twice, allow me on this opportunity to attach to this prestigious award, a personal touch. At an age when most youngsters are struggling to unravel the secrets of mathematics and the mysteries of the Bible; at an age when first love blooms; at the tender age of sixteen, I was handed a rifle so that I could defend myself. That was not my dream. I wanted to be a water engineer. I studied in an agricultural school and I thought being a water engineer was an important profession in the parched Middle East. I still think so today. However, I was compelled to resort to the gun. I served in the military for decades. Under my responsibility, young men and women who wanted to live, wanted to love, went to their deaths instead. They fell in the defense of our lives.

44. Yitzhak Rabin - A Man Of Vision

Yitzhak Rabin –
a Man of Vision
By Or Rosenstein
Yitzhak Rabin was born on March 1 st , 1922, in Jerusalem. Rabin's vision of peace was between Israel and its neighbor countries. It was this vision that led him to sign peace agreements with the State of Jordan and with the Palestinians. This vision brought him glory, Nobel Prize for Peace, and finally, led to his death. Rabin did not always have this ambition for peace. Since the age of 19 until three years before his assassination, he led a soldier's life and dealt with defense throughout his entire life. Rabin participated in many of Israel's wars: He joined the Palmah at the age of 19 and participated in the British invasion of Lebanon and Syria. During the War of Independence he commanded the Harel Brigade, which was in charge of keeping the way to Jerusalem open for supply convoys. On December 5, 1963, Rabin was appointed as Israel's 7 th Chief of Staff, and in June 1967, he commanded over the impressive military victory of the IDF in the Six-Day War. Rabin also served as Minister of Defense in several governments. "Haaretz"'s correspondent, Akiva Eldar, wrote: "This was Rabin… the same Defense Minister who, during the years of the Intifada, has instructed Israeli troops to "break the arms and legs" of Palestinian youths". Rabin's vision has evolved during his second time serving as Prime Minister of Israel. Martin Indyk, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel, wrote: "As Prime Minister, he came to understand that there would be no progress and no peace deal possible unless he found a way to negotiate directly with Yassir Arafat". Rabin had realized that peace is top priority to the existence of Israel in the Middle East. This realization was based on his experience as Ambassador to Washington, Prime Minister (1974-1977), Labor member of Knesset, member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee and Minister of Defense (1984-1990). As Rabin said in 1995: "We should not let the land that is flowing with milk and honey become a land flowing with blood and tears. Don’t let it happen. If we, as partners to peacemaking, do not unite against the evil angels of death by violence and terrorism, rivers of hatred will overflow again and swamp the Middle East".

Yitzhak Rabin: Another Victim of Zealotry
Free Inquiry , winter 1995/96)
By James A. Haught
Civilized people around the globe were sickened by the Nov. 4 murder of Yitzhak Rabin, Israel's Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister, by a Jewish fanatic. Such zealot crimes hurt the human spirit. They damage the majority hope that reason can prevail over hate and tribalism. The killer, a law student at a religious university, told police he "acted alone and on orders from God." But he wasn't alone he was part of a movement blindly preaching violence: Israel's right-wing fringe. These extremists mostly are Orthodox Jews who think God gave them the Promised Land forever. They abound among armed West Bank settlers who vow never to yield an inch of ground to Muslims. They were symbolized by the bitter Orthodox physician who machine-gunned praying Muslims in a mosque at Hebron. Meanwhile, the Muslims have abundant killers on their side, some of whom give their lives in suicide attacks on Jews. Rabin's peace plan, which would return much of the captured West Bank to Palestinians, made him evil in the eyes of Jewish militants. They grew increasingly vehement, holding stormy protests with posters of Rabin in a Nazi uniform the most despicable image possible to Jews.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner 1995 - Yitzhak Rabin Description: ABOUT THE HERO:-Yitzhak Rabin was born in 1992 in Jerusalem. His life is intertwined with the history of Israel. During the War of Independence, he fought in the Palmach as commander of the Harel Brigade. In 1967, as Chief of Staff, he led the Israel Defense Force to a stunning victory in the Six Day War - whose crowning achievement was the liberation of Jerusalem.
Upon leaving the military, he became a statesman. He served as Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., was a Knesset member, Minister and Prime Minister. In 1992, as Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, he declared a change in national priorities and promised to achieve a peace arrangement, in order to prevent further loss of life and to ensure a better future. In 1994, Rabin received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4, 1995, in a symbolic and tragic manner, with a song of peace on his lips and the blood-soaked page on which the words to the song were written in his pocket. Rabin's death awakened unprecedented identification among both young and old in Israel and around the world. Kings and presidents came to his funeral. Yitzhak Rabin will go down in history as one of the great leaders of the 20th century.
REMARKS: This is a everlasting collection to remember such a great man and very limited sets available.

Israeli-Arab conflict has plagued the twentieth century. . However, things quieted down when Yitzhak Rabin was Prime Minister from 1974-77, and again during 1992-95. During this time, Israel signed peace agreements with several Arab countries. Rabin worked most of his life to achieve peace. During his second term as Prime Minister, Rabin signed two agreements, the Oslo Agreement with the Palestinians, and the Treaty of Peace with Jordan.
