Editorial Review Product Description It soon becomes evident that Rabin is a woman with strong preferences and opinions. She found Rosalyn Carter difficult to deal with and developed a fondness for Yasir Arafat. She has no doubt that her husband's assassination was the result of hate-mongering among right-wing rabbis and intellectuals based at Bar-Ilan University, where Yigal Amir, Rabin's killer, was a student. Leah Rabin may not have written the most objective biography of the late prime minister, but certainly Rabin is intimate and heartfelt and full of timely reflections on Israel's past and future. Editorial Review Product Description A dramatic tale of treachery and betrayal, Murder in the Name of God investigates and recreates the historic events of November 4, 1995. On that night a twenty-five-year-old student named Yigal Amir assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, an act that abruptly changed the course of Israeli politics. Based on exhaustive research, including an exclusive interview with the assassin, Murder in the Name of God is the first book to give the full story of the people whose words and actions made Rabin's assassination inevitable: the nationalist rabbis who condemned Rabin by invoking an arcane talmudic ruling; the militant settlers and right-wing politicians who launched a sophisticated campaign of incitement against him; and the security experts who saw what was coming but failed to act. In a series of shocking revelations, the book ranges beyond Israel to expose the extent of American support--financial and ideological--for the movement that produced Rabin's killer. Far more than the tale of an assassination, Murder in the Name of God is a powerful indictment of a society's failure to examine itself honestly and to bring its own worst enemies to justice. As Karpin and Friedman describe the days and months leading up toRabin's assassination, it becomes apparent that a confrontationbetween Israel's secular majority and its ultra-orthodox religiouszealots had long been imminent. The 1993 signing of the OsloAgreement, which began the process of returning the West Bank toPalestinian rule, provided the impetus for a violent tear in thefabric of Israeli society. Amir's story is painstakinglyreconstructed, from his early initiation in zealotry to his currentstatus in jail--serving a life sentence, but still intensely proud, even boastful, of his deed. The authors also show how the politicalgap has dramatically widened with the religious right's strengtheningof its position in Israel's government since Rabin's killing. This isa chilling and sobering journalistic account that anyone with aninterest in Middle East affairs simply must read, andsoon. --Tjames Madison Customer Reviews (10)
A frightening tale of mystagogical fanaticism
Pathetic, irresponsible and also demeaning to Rabin's family Dr. David Morrison, the author of "Lies - Israel's Secret Service and the Rabin Murder," presents a damning critique of this book and the authors and their deceptions are made clear point by point. If you want to keep your head buried in the sand then read "Murder in the Name of God." If you want a serious critique of all of the available evidence then read Barry Chamish or Dr. Morrison's "LIES." Wake up Israel!
Fascinating study of Israeli political debate
puts the events in context

Editorial Review Product Description An amateur film of the assassination, as well as eyewitness testimony, documents that Rabin appeared unhurt from shots fired at the notorious peace rally. The same footage clearly shows a back door of Rabin's empty limousine slammed shut from inside before the Prime Minister was pushed into the vehicle. Who was waiting for him? And what happened during the limousine's abnormally lengthy detour en route to the hospital? The death certificate stated that Rabin was shot in the chest and that his spine was shattered. Why did the doctors later change their stories to fit the official tale, which has Rabin shot in his back at a distance? Falsehoods are exposed and truth revealed in this tirelessly investigated exposé that proves beyond the shadow of a doubt the existence of shocking treachery that has altered the course of human affairs. Editorial Review Product Description Customer Reviews (1)
a stimulating collection of essays on liberty and tolerance The essays cover a variety of related topics: the costs of tolerance, the treatment of speech+AH4-+AH4- advocating violence and of hate speech, the responsibilities of the media when faced with threats to give publicity to terrorism (articles by Joseph Eliot Magnet, David Boeyink and Edmund Lambeth), and the regulation of international communications, particularly on the Internet (Michael Jaffe). Some contributions approach the topic from a legal perspective (David Feldman, Owen Fiss, Irwin Cotler, Richard Moon, David Goldberg), others from that of political philosophy (Raphael Cohen-Almagor,+AH4-+AH4- L.W. Sumner, Sam Lehman-Wilzig). Many writers develop their theme from a Canadian, Israeli, British, or United States perspective, exploring the implications of recent developments within a particular jurisdiction. Many essays implicitly share an underlying theme: liberalism carries significant costs. It is clearly articulated in the contributions of Frederick Schauer and Harvey Chisick. The public, rather than the victim, should be asked to bear the costs of tolerating harmful speech. +AH4-+AH4- In summary, this is a stimulating collection of essays on subjects of concern for all liberal democracies. Cohen-Almagor's introduction skillfully knits together the various themes as well as making some perceptive points of his own.+AH4- ... Read more |
