Hershey, A.D.,
in full ALFRED DAY HERSHEY (b. Dec. 4, 1908, Lansing, Mich., U.S.d. May 22, 1997, Syosset, N.Y.), American biologist who, along with and Salvador Luria , won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1969. The prize was given for research done on bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria). Hershey earned a doctorate in chemistry from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1934 and then took a position at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. He joined the staff of the Genetics Research Unit of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1950 after giving up his position as professor at Washington University. In 1963 he became director of the Genetics Research Unit. i.e., Hershey is most noted for the so-called blender experiment that he performed with Martha Chase in 1952. By showing that phage DNA is the principal component entering the host cell during infection, Hershey proved that DNA, rather than protein, is the genetic material of the phage.

microNotes October, 2002, Vol. 10, No. 2 Yes, microNotes is back! It was out of commission during our move to BPS. Sad to say, no one mentioned missing it, but microNotes is nothing, if not impervious to apathy! WE MADE IT! With the able assistance of Roger Pixley and his crew, plus Jim Simons and others from Physical Plant, MMG completed its move to the Biomedical and Physical Sciences (BPS) Building in August (FYI, Physics/Astronomy is still moving). BPS was officially dedicated in a gala ceremony on April 12. In addition, we celebrated the "completion" of our move to BPS with a packed house reception on August 15. Thanks go out to all who helped with the move and related functions. That list includes pretty much everyone in MMG and is much too long to include here. However, particular recognition should go to the efforts of Tom Corner , who both coordinated the August 15 Reception and, more important, worked tirelessly to help clean up Giltner Hall and bring it to a condition where it was appropriate for its next occupants. Thanks, Tom! STUDENT AWARDS RECEPTION: October 29, 4 pm, 1425 BPS

Counting the Nobel laureates... Does it prove what the Discovery Institute says it does?
by Wesley R. Elsberry In their viewer's guide pretentiously (and erroneously, as I will demonstrate below) titled, "Getting the Facts Straight", the Discovery Institute gives us this discussion: The narrator says that anti-evolution efforts following the Scopes trial "had a chilling effect on the teaching of evolution and the publishers of science textbooks. For decades, Darwin seemed to be locked out of America's public schools. But then evolution received an unexpected boost from a very unlikely source the Soviet Union." When the Soviets launched the first man-made satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, Americans were goaded into action. The narrator continues: "As long-neglected science programs were revived in America's classrooms, evolution was, too. Biblical literalists have been doing their best to discredit Darwin's theory ever since." This takes the distortion of history one giant step further. It is blatantly false that U.S. science education was "neglected" after the Scopes trial because Darwinism was "locked out of America's public schools." During those supposedly benighted decades, American schools produced more Nobel Prize-winners than the rest of the world put together. And in physiology and medicine the fields that should have been most stunted by a neglect of Darwinism the U.S. produced fully twice as many Nobel laureates as all other countries combined. How about the U.S. space program? Was it harmed by the supposed neglect of Darwinism in public schools? Contrary to what Evolution implies, the U.S. space program in 1957 was in good shape. The Soviet Union won the race to launch the first satellite because it had made that one of its highest national priorities. The U.S., on the other hand, had other priorities such as caring for its citizens and rebuilding a war-torn world. When Sputnik prodded Americans to put more emphasis on space exploration, the U.S. quickly surpassed the Soviet Union and landed men on the Moon. The necessary resources and personnel were already in place; the U.S. didn't have to wait for a new generation of rocket scientists trained in evolution.

TRAILBLAZER: Nobel laureate Alfred Hershey used bacteria viruses to help uncover the role of DNA in heredity. Nobel laureate Alfred D. Hershey, who helped revolutionize molecular biology with a Waring blender, died on May 22 at age 88. Hershey shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with Max Delbrck and Salvador Luria, two longtime collaborators. The three collectively were known as the "phage group" because of their pioneering work with bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria. In the 1940s, they determined that the bacteriophage was a model organism for exploring the molecular basis of biology, especially cellular reproduction and heredity. In experiments at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 1952, Hershey and assistant Martha Chase radioactively labeled viral DNA and viral protein and subsequently infected E. coli
