IN MEMORY OF MELANIE BROWN On Sunday, July 28, 2002, we were saddened by the loss of Melanie Brown. Melanie was a warm, special, person and was a friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her husband David, and their ten children. Melanie and David Brown paved the way for parents' rights in Kentucky. They were the first parents in their state to go to jail rather than comply with court ordered grandparent visitation. When the Browns began proceedings to adopt their daughter Odessa, the girl's paternal grandmother, Shirley Kitts, never became involved. She did not attempt to adopt the girl herself, or even see her. She knew all ties to her biological granddaughter would be severed by the adoption, but she never contested it. Yet after the adoption became final, she demanded visitation. Melanie and David began to feel uneasy with Shirley Kitts and began to see her as a danger to their daughter. When she threatened to abduct the child, then later said she would take both herself and Odessa to Heaven, the Browns refused to allow any further visitation. The Browns faced contempt instead of allowing their daughter to be placed in harm's way. They were sent to jail each time a visit was scheduled to occur. They went willingly, since, in their eyes giving in would have amounted to putting their daughter in danger. For six months this continued. Cold, scared, and being reduced to sleeping on the filthy concrete floor of a jail cell, these parents thought not of themselves, but only of their little girl. We applaud Melanie and David as brave warriors in the battle to restore fit parents' rights to protect their children.

Respect your roots, respect yourself. She's the loudest, most aggressive of the bunch. If the articles I've read on the internet are any indication, she's the most boisterous of the lot and is extremely outspoken. She herself admits to saying things others might not be willing to say aloud. Is this bad? Well, it depends, of course, on the context of what she's saying. But speaking up for oneself shouldn't be seen as a bad trait. I recall many occassions where, in hindsight, I can think of a dozen things I would like to have said, but didn't have the courage to say. Melanie married on September 13, 1998. She's also expecting, like her bandmate, Victoria Addams. A review I read of the Girls' Wembley Stadium concert last month indicated that Mel G's slowing a little, dancing a bit less, toning herself down. One wonders if it's fear, fatigue or both. It couldn't be easy, having the schedule that the Spice Girls have, and being with child. I know someone who, in the first two or three months of her pregnancy, couldn't keep her eyes open. That Melanie is able to carry on as she has is impressive. Perhaps it's contractual obligation, perhaps personal obligation - either way, it can't be easy. When I saw the Spice Girls on "MuchMusic", the all-music channel in Canada, I was touched by the obvious effection all the Girls had for their younger fans. This seemed especially true of Scary Spice, who took kids from the audience while she was performing, or while she was being interviewed, and chatted with them and danced with them. It's the sort of thing of which the kids would only have dreamed.
