He grew up on the Mediterranean coast, in Greece and Yugoslavia, and through his parents, who gave diving lessons, he developed an intense love of the sea and marine life. His dreams of becoming a marine biologist were shattered when he had a diving accident at the age of 17. Having returned to Paris to finish his studies, he developed an interest in cinema and film making, founding his own film-making company Films du loup (which later became Films du Dauphin and then Leeloo Productions Besson was 20 when he made his first film in 1980, a short film in black and white entitled L’avant-dernier . This first film, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama, won a number of prizes and, encouraged, Besson re-made it as his first long film, Le dernier combat . This film won Besson a brace of prizes, including two prizes at the Avoriaz science fiction film festival in 1983. This site is a member of WebRing. To browse visit Here The first Luc Besson movie I saw was La Femme Nikita . I loved the action in the film, but at the time didn't really appreciate the filmmaking. The next film I saw of his was The Professional . This is when I became a fan of his. I watched it a few times, amazed by the action scenes. But I also fell in love with the characters of Leon and Mathilda, how through their strange situation, they fall in love like brother and sister. Plus I love the over the top performance of Gary Oldman , as the dirty cop. When I heard about the Fifth Element coming out I knew I would be a fan. I refused to watch the previews of the film, I wanted to be completely unprepared for it. After waiting in line for a couple of hours I saw it at my favorite theater, the Cinerama . I was taken into the future, the f/x in this film are outstanding. A different view of the future, instead of the typical Blade Runner rip-off. The performances are not up to the standards of his past films, but I think that's because Luc is focusing more on the f/x, than in his past films. The characters are fun and I really like

Characters and Themes in Luc Besson’s "Subway", "The Big Blue", "Nikita" and "Leon". By Stuart Fernie Main characters and society The principal characters in "Subway", "The Big Blue", "Nikita" and "Leon" all have at least one thing in common – they are all loners or outcasts from society. They do not fit easily into the conformist society that is the experience of the majority of citizens, but then the societies depicted in the films may also be considered extreme and outside the experience of most. The worlds explored in these films (with the possible exception of "Big Blue") are dark and uncertain places where conventional views of what is right and wrong are challenged, and indeed where only the principal characters (in spite of appearances) show any real "integrity". It is in the conflict between these characters and the societies in which they live that we witness interesting and challenging observations on life, morality, and personal development. These worlds are extreme, as are the actions and reactions of the characters, but then that is the basis of drama, and extremity may lead to greater clarity. We shall look, then, into the nature of these principal characters, their development, and their relationships with other characters. We shall also look at the nature of the societies in which these characters interact.

Luc Besson's film 'The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc' I suppose I should know better than to present a historian's view of a film of this sort, but such is what I do. Along similar lines, Besson has said that he made the character to look as androgynous as possible, thereby dredging up another bit of slander leveled against her by her enemies but contradicted by the eyewitness accounts. Based on Besson's comments in "Le Monde" and elsewhere, he was apparently attracted to doing a film about Joan of Arc because he thought she was androgynous like the character played by his (then) lover Milla Jovovich in "The Fifth Element", and so he found them both "sexy". One reviewer, Kathryn Norberg, dryly commented that this seems a pretty thin premise upon which to make a movie about Saint Joan. It could be added that the real St. Joan did not take kindly to people viewing her as a sex object (androgynous or otherwise), based on her response to those few who decided to make lewd comments about her. The physical appearance of the character is a bit surreal. It's been pointed out that the character looks a lot like Leonardo diCapprio (and, strangely enough, bears no resemblance to Milla Jovovich as she normally looks). One of the early promo shots for the movie featured a mannequin-like Joan with thick, bruised-looking lips and stringy hair hanging dreadlock-style over her face, looking like a strange cross between a fashion magazine pinup and "Xena, Warrior Princess". According to one article, Besson had told Jovovich to prepare for the role by going to nightclubs with her hair cut in an ugly fashion (obviously, the worst trauma that the real Joan had to suffer was being seen publicly on a "bad hair day", so Jovovich had to develop the spine to handle such tragedies). And yes, the above mentality probably explains a few things about the way this movie turned out.
