Product Description

One of the hottest international properties to come out of the new wave of French filmmakers in the 1980s, Luc Besson is a director with a simple mission and a dazzling visual style. One of the most respected names in French film studies, Susan Hayward, sketches Besson's filmmaking career and processes to date, placing the films within their socio-historical and political contexts. She investigates the interface between technology and the body, along with the environments in which the violent interactions between the two get played out. The absence of family and the demise of community are also explored with theoretical sophistication. Besson's films represent the conflicts and tensions of a post-modern age and are perceived as signs of their time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Besson handbook.
Congratulations must go to Susan Hayward for writing this wonderful studyof one of the world's greatest directors. This book goes into themarvellous detail that so many leave out. Of particular interest is thestudy of violence, and the 'fear of youth' concept.

The whole book isincredibly well-written and excellently set-out, with colorful and relevantillustrations where necessary. Even the more difficult to grasp conceptsare explained perefectly so as not to alienate the less film-literatereaders. It seems as though Ms. Hayward has a particular affinity for'Leon', which is studied at length, again in a very approachable and yetinsightful manner.

In conclusion, it is fair to say that this book is theperfect springboard into appreciateing the films of Luc Besson, perhaps ofFrench cinema as a whole.

Heartily reccomended. ... Read more

Product Description

This fascinating collection looks at the career and films of Luc Besson, one of the most acclaimed figures in international cinema. Contributions have been assembled from all over the world, and their different approaches reflect this geographical diversity. Films covered range from Besson’s first feature, La Dernier Combat, to the international blockbusters The Fifth Element and Joan of Arc. The essays range from looking at costume design to musical scores, and the final chapter offers a transcript of a previously unpublished interview with the man himself.

He is the only French director to have crossed over successfully during the 1990s into the blockbuster spectacular we associate with Hollywood cinema and yet this is only the second book in English on this major international director. The Films of Luc Besson will make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the career and films of the "master of spectacle."

Product Description

Deep underground, the Minimoys are waiting . . . for a champion.

Arthur's grandfather disappeared four years ago. All he left behind are his notebooks full of stories about little -- known African tribes—including the Minimoys, a miniature people who are all less than one inch tall.

But the Minimoys can't possibly be real . . . can they?

Arthur is about to find out, as he un covers a hidden message that catapults him on an adventure wilder than he had ever imagined. In just three days, he must find a way to the land of the Minimoys, recover a stolen treasure, battle an invading force of mosquito -- riding warriors, defeat an evil wizard, win the heart of a very independent prin cess—and somehow get back home again.

It seems like an impossible task, but as he'll discover along the way, sometimes the littlest heroes can make the biggest difference. . . .

Amazon.com Review
Luc Besson, writer, director and producer of The Fifth Elementand La Femme Nikita, makes his children's book debut with this over-the-top middle-grade fantasy first published in France.

Ten-year-old Arthur and his grandmother are doing just fine on their own -- except for that Grandpa has been missing in Africa for four years and a developer villain is evicting them from their own house. Things sour further when antique dealers haul away all of Grandpa's priceless African artifacts and books. Arthur is certain that his grandfather must have left some hidden message somewhere that will reverse their current downward spiral. He hopes to discover some way to enter the world of the beautiful, red-haired, blue-eyed African Princess Selenia that he saw in his grandfather's sketches; member of a tiny (less-than-an-inch-tall) tribe called the Minimoys that he suspects might live in Grandma's garden. But how, when Grandpa's attic has been stripped of clues?

Besson's story contains many of the elements of a good, suspenseful children's adventure, but it is often over told, employs an abundance of facile plot solutions, and loses threads and themes in a long, dizzying action-adventure sequence that abruptly ends as "to be continued." Still, it's hard to resist a likeable hero-protagonist, treasure maps, the promise of rubies, and a land of warring tiny people. Let the hype begin! The sequel Arthur and the Forbidden City is due in fall 2005, and Arthur, a computer-animated movie based on the books, is due out in 2006, with Madonna voicing the part of Princess Selenia.(Ages 8 to 12) --Karin Snelson ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Buried Treasure
I bought this book as a gift and decided to read it first to make sure it was age appropriate. The book recommends 9 to 12 - that's wrong.I would say 6 to 8 and geared mostly to boys.If you have a child that is afraid of bugs this book will freak them out.Little monster bugs that kill other bugs is not a bedtime story. But for wild man kids who like adventure, treasure and imagination this is a true find.It is one of several, so be aware of that so you may purchase the others.Nothing worse than finishing a book to see - TO BE CONTINUED and not have the continuation.Good for tots - nice read.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't wild about it
hi well to start this book was okay. I liked the movie better but since there are two books I'll just cover them both in this one review. book #1 Arthur and the minimoys,
It was slow at first then it got good and fun then slow then fun and so on and so on. then it ended bad they just got into the forbidden city. which made me kinda mad that you had to buy the second book to know how it ended. Book #2 Arthur and the forbidden city
This one was better it was never slow and had more action and whithout even knowing it Arthur marrys Selenea! And well the excuses to get out of things were not very good. I liked both books okay well gotta go hope this was helpful Brooke

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story, easy reading
Arthur and the Minimoys was a decent little story, definitely targeted to a younger crowd (pre-teen) and was a relatively decent read. The whole idea was simple yet very interesting.

I only had two issues with the book.

First, there's a definite issue with relative scale.I'm willing to believe in the tiny Minimoy population that's barely 1/2" tall... but nothing 1/2" tall is going to be able to ride on a mosquito. You have to let some of the scale problems go if you're going to read this.

Second, the book pretty much abruptly ends, blatantly leaving you hanging for the sequel, "Arthur and the Forbidden City."It's almost a prerequisite that you get both books (or the combined book, "Arthur and the Invisibles") or you'll never actually know how the story ends.

Other than that, you'll like it.It's simple and fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars la la la kaydee p2/r2
Arthur and the Minimoys is an exciting and interesting science fiction book with a bit of a romantic twist. Arthur is a curious ten year old boy whose grandmother's house is about to be bought by the evil storeowner, Davido. That is unless they can pay off their debt. So, arthur sets out on ajourney to find the minimoys, an african tribe who are about 1 inch tall. From the clues Arthur's grandfather left before he disapered- four years ago. I didn't really like this book, but if you like books with a vivid imagination, you will probably like it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book by Cristina P2/R2

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor product description...
My star rating is based upon the poor product description that Amazon.com has for this movie. I took a chance an ordered this product, but Vasili Rabshtyna is correct in that there are NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES. I'm not sure where Thierry Rabaud purchased his copy but I suspect it wasn't from Amazon.com, at least not the one here in the USA. It looks like the UK Amazon.com has the PAL region 2 encoding version of this product, which does have English subtitles.

So, unless you speak French, DO NOT PURCHACE THIS PRODUCT!

1-0 out of 5 stars wrong description of the product-no english subtitles
These area very good movies, but the description to this particular product is wrong. If you want to enjoy these movies and don't speak french-don't buy them! Because the movies are in French and yes they are subtitled as described, but subtitled in French!!! I tried to return DVD's back to Amazon, but they say that even though the movie is in French, it is still SUBTITLED so I can understand it and can't return it because of lack in description.

Product Description
The Cinema of France comprises the art of film and creative movies made within the nation of France or by French filmmakers abroad. France was the birthplace of cinema and was responsible for many of its early significant contributions. Several important cinematic movements, including the Nouvelle Vague, began in the country. It is noted for having a particularly strong film industry, due in part to a certain level of protection afforded it by the French government. It is able to stand up well to competition when compared with the cinema industries of other countries. Characteristics of French cinema include slower plotlines, strong character development, and a deviance from happy or conclusive endings. Apart from its strong indigenous film tradition, France has also been a gathering spot for artists from across Europe and the world. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Fifth Element is a 1997 science fiction film directed by Luc Besson, starring Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovovich, Ian Holm, and Chris Tucker. Mostly set during the twenty-third century, the film's central plot involves the survival of humanity, which becomes the duty of a taxicab driver (and former special forces major) named Korben Dallas (Willis) when a young woman (Jovovich) falls into his taxicab. Upon learning of her significance, Korben must join efforts with the girl and a priest (Holm) to recover four mystical stones which are key to defending Earth from an impending attack of pure evil and destruction. Every five thousand years, in conjunction with a planetary alignment, a "Great Evil" appears whose purpose is to destroy all life. In preparation for the next appearance in the 23rd century, a group of aliens called the Mondoshawan (pronounced "Mon-do-SHEE-wan") arrive on Earth in 1914 at an ancient tomb that is being excavated, to extract the only weapon capable of defeating the Great Evil, a collection of four stones representing the classical elements and the eponymous Fifth Element that conjugates the other four into organic life. After taking the weapons, claiming that they are not safe on Earth, as "war is coming", the Mondoshawans present a key to their human confidant, a priest, and tell him to pass the information provoking their mission through future generations in preparation for the Evil's arrival. In 2263, the Great Evil appears and destroys a Federated Army space battleship. When the Mondoshawans attempt t...http://booksllc.net/?id=143809 ... Read more
