21. Edith Wharton
Edith Jones 18621937 Edward Harrison May (1824-1887) Oil on canvas, 1881 The AmericanAcademy of Arts and Letters, New York City; gift of Edith Wharton, 1930.
http://www.npg.si.edu/exh/wharton/nedith.htm
In 1881, when Edith was nineteen, she was painted in London by Edward Harrison May. He captured her keen intelligence, and at the same time her fashionable dress, with its narrow waist, puffed sleeves, and bustleshowing her at once the debutante and also the keen observer who would later become the brilliant writer. Her father had died the year the portrait was painted, and Edith and her mother, who had been living in Cannes, returned to New York to reside on Twenty-fifth Street, just off of Fifth Avenue. Edith married Edward ("Teddy") Wharton at this house four years later. Wharton gave this portrait to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, to which she was elected in 1930. Her sister-in-law Mary Cadwalader Jones wrote to the academy that Mrs. Wharton, who had lived in France since 1912, "felt deeply the honour lately given her," and she would like to have her portrait "in New York, where after all she `belongs.'" In any really good subject, one has only to probe deep enough to come to tears.
There are two ways of spreading light: To be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. Another unsettling element in modern art is that common symptom of immaturity, the dread of doing what has been done before. I have never known a novel that was good enough to be good in spite of its being adapted to the author's political views. After all, one knows one's weak points so well, that it's rather bewildering to have the critics overlook them and invent others.

Edith Wharton - (1862-1937) New York City By Elana Schipano Read other essays on Edith Wharton written by retired Rhode Island teacher Sue Huetteman and New York students Ilana Gross and Molly Avila I. Biography Edith Wharton was born on January 24, 1862, in New York City, as Edith Newbold Jones. Her parents were George and Lucretia Jones, and she had two older brothers, Frederic and Harry. Edith lived in aristocratic NY society and was taught the mannerisms and expectations of the higher society. She received no formal education; instead she was primarily self-educated. At 17, Edith created a collection of writing, and also submitted poetry to The World Her father passed away when she was 20. She married Edward Norton Robbins Wharton (Teddy informally) on April 29, 1885. In 1890, she had published "Mrs. Manstey's View," "The Fullness of Life," and "Bunner Sisters," and continued to publish more works. In 1901, her mother passed away. In the years of 1901-1902 she designed and had built The Mount, her home based on her ideas of design, in Lenox, Massachusetts. The Mount is now a Historical Landmark. In 1905

Edith Wharton - (1862-1937) Newport By Susan Huetteman Read other essays on Edith Wharton written by New York students Ilana Gross and Molly Avila and Elana Schipano I. Background During the 1920's wealthy Americans sought escape from confining traditions. Edith Wharton wrote, "...Catherine had never had beauty—a gift which, in the eyes of New York, justified every success, and excused a certain number of failings." Greenwich Village became the center for the New York intellectuals and Newport was the literary center for New England, but the artistic exodus to Europe continued. Edith Wharton was a New York socialite and Newport elite who traveled abroad extensively. With the divorce from her elder husband, she sought the Parisian scene where the talents of Henry James, Gertrude Stein, and "Les Six" flourished. ("Les Six"included Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, and the only woman, Germain Tailleferre.) Ironically, it was in Europe that she first met Henry James. She counted him among her literary friends, admiring his analytical style. They both wrote of their homeland and an alter-self. Despite, or perhaps because of the depth of their friendship, she remained his devoted student and in his literary shadow.

Waythorne, on the drawing-room hearth, waited for his wife to come down to dinner. The anticipation of such enjoyment was not, however, the sentiment expressed by Mrs. Waythorn's charming face when she presently joined him. Though she had put on her most engaging teagown she had neglected to assume the smile that went with it, and Waythorn thought he had never seen her look so nearly worried. "What is it?" he asked. "Is anything wrong with Lily?" "No; I've just been in and she's still sleeping." Mrs. Waythorn hesitated. "But something tiresome has happened."

Lydia's eye regretfully followed the shiny broadcloth of his retreating back till it lost itself in the cloud of touts and cab drivers hanging about the station; then she glanced across at Gannett and caught the same regret in his look. They were both sorry to be alone. "Par-ten-za!" shouted the guard. The train vibrated to a sudden slamming of doors; a waiter ran along the platform with a tray of fossilized sandwiches; a belated porter flung a bundle of shawls and band-boxes into a third-class carriage; the guard snapped out a brief Partenza! which indicated the purely ornamental nature of his first shout; and the train swung out of the station. The direction of the road had changed, and a shaft of sunlight struck across the dusty red velvet seats into Lydia's corner. Gannett did not notice it. He had returned to his Revue de Paris, and she had to rise and lower the shade of the farther window. Against the vast horizon of their leisure such incidents stood out sharply.

Now I know that this must have been written as a sort of cautionary tale about how the rigid rules of upper crust society prevent Archer from pursuing his heart's desire and when Wharton wrote, it probably seemed to many that life would be better if we followed our hearts and not societal conventions. But looking back with the benefit of a century of hindsight, I found myself nostalgic for a time when Society was capable of Outrage, individuals were subject to Shame and societal morays actually served as a bulwark against scandalous behavior.
