Edward Payson Roe
America's greatest popular author. His novels of the nineteenth century are precious treasures of American literature. Roe served as a chaplain and war correspondent for the Union army during the Civil War. After the war he served as pastor at the Highland Falls (N.Y) Presbyterian Church. Roe first turned to a literary career after the Chicago fire of 1871. Deeply moved by the tragedy, he visited Chicago and penned his first novel, Barriers Burned Away , which proved a tremendous success. After his novel, Opening a Chestnut Burr , he realized a new calling and resigned his pastorate. Roe married Anna Paulina Sands and was the father of five children. He and his family lived in Cornwall, N.Y. on the beautiful Hudson River. It was there he died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of fifty after an evening reading aloud to his family. My friend, Janet, introduced me to E.P.Roe several years ago (for which she has my undying gratitude), and he quickly became my favorite author. Finding his books is like finding buried treasure. Look for them!

dependent on its maritime trade, especially its exports to Constantinople. It is the administrative centre of a district (sanjak) producing and exporting barley, oats, spelt and canary seed, and largely planted with mulberry trees, on which silkworms are fed. White cocoons are exported to western Europe (394 cwt. in 1901), silkworms’ eggs to Russia and Persia. Rodosto is the ancient Rhaedestus or Bisanthe, said to have been founded by Samians. In Xenophon’s Anabasis it is mentioned as in the kingdom of the Thracian prince Seuthes. Its restoration by Justinian in the 6th century A.D. is chronicled by Procopius. In 813 and again in 1206 it was sacked by the Bulgarians, but it continues to appear as a place of considerable note in later Byzantine history. RODRIGUEZ (officially RODRIGTJES), an island in the Indian Ocean in 19° 41’ S., 63° 23’ E.; the most important dependency of the British colony of Mauritius, from which it is distant 344 nautical miles~ It is a station on the “ all-British “ cable route between South Africa and Australia, telegraphic communication with Mauritius being established in 1902. With a length of 13 m. E. and W., and a breadth of 3 to 6 m. N. and S., it has an area estimated at 421/2 sq. m. On all sides it is surrounded by a fringing reef of coral, studded with is’ets. This reef, only 100 yds. wide at the eastern end of the island, extends westward 3 m., and both N. and S. forms a flat area partly dry at low water. TwO passages through the reef are available for large vessels—these leading respectively to Port Mathurin on the N. coast and to Port South-East.

B ARRIERS B URNED A WAY The gilt words were stamped into a green cloth binding.
Yes, I've read it, Mr. Shawnessy said.
He handed the book back to Eva, who became instantly reabsorbed in the story.
Between green cloth covers, on yellow faded pages, an upright young man from the country goes to the wicked city of Chicago to seek his fortune. There he falls in love with a rich girl, innately good but unredeemed by the Christian faith. Scenes of love, misunderstanding, danger, sickness, and death follow each other with dramatic vividness. In the climax of the book, the Great Chicago Fire bursts catastrophically upon the world of private lives and loves. The hero saves the heroine from a villainous rape amid spectacular scenes of fire and death and converts her to Jesus on the shore of the lake while around them the corrupt wealth and social inequalities of the City are leveled by the purging fire, and all barriers between the lovers are forever burned away. The congregation is requested to stand on the last verse.
The river was far behind. The roofs of Freehaven were visible a straight half-mile down the road. The Court House Tower stood in a haze of distance directly from the line of the road, a square stem of red brick, capped with a dull green roof ascending to a blunt point. A clockface recessed in the roofslope was too distant to be read.
