It may well be doubted if the light of Christmas day dawned on a sadder household than that which was sheltered in the old mansion. Worn and exhausted to the last degree, and yet sleepless from anxiety, grief, and shame, the two women watched beside the fitful, half-conscious man. At last he appeared to throw off his stupor sufficiently to recognize his wife; but it was with a strange look, in which were blended fear, suspicion, and shame. ... Read more

But while his action did suggest hope, it also contained elements of discouragement. She did not find fault with what he proposed to do, but with the spirit in which he was entering on his most difficult task. His knowledge of the world was so crude and partial that he did not at all realize the herculean labor that he now became eager to attempt; and he was bent on accomplishing everything in a way that would minister to his own pride, and proposed to be under obligations to no one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books you'll ever read!
I am a big fan of E.P. Roe's books, and this is my favorite. It portrays a youn man who rises above his faulty upbringing and above serious trouble to become a true Knight of the 19th century. After ending up in prison through embezzelment, and then being turned away from every house in the city but two, he becomes a Christian and manages through hard work and faithfulness to prove himself to everyone, and later goes through the Civil War and comes back a hero. This is a must read- it's a fascinating story, and very encouraging as well. He also happens to be what I consider the "ideal" man. :-) ... Read more

Why, you poor child, she said to Edith, turning her round before the light, "you're half drowned. You must have something hot right away, or you'll take your death o' cold," and with something of her husband's faith in whiskey, she soon brought Edith a hot punch that for a few moments seemed to make the girl's head spin, but as it was followed by strong tea and toast, she felt none the worse, and danger from the chill and wet was effectually disposed of. ... As a rule he was too healthful, too well organized and indolent, to be easily irritated, while in serious matters he had not been crossed. She knew enough of life to be aware that his manhood had never been awakened or even deeply moved, and she was eager indeed to accomplish their mission in the States and return to conditions of life not so electrical. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage 1885 hardcover edition
This pretty vintage pre-1900 historical novel was written by Edward Payson Roe and published by Dodd, Mead and Company in New York in 1985.It has a pretty cover and a frontispiece illustration.

It tells the story of a girl who finds success and accomplishment even though she's not particularly pretty. The setting is during the civil war, culminating in 1863, and touches the New York Draft Riots of 1863, and the Battle of Gettysburg. It seems historically interesting and accurate as well as a good story.

Miss Lou left consternation, confusion and deep anxiety below stairs. Mad Whately had his own code of ethics, and he felt as if he had committed the unpardonable sin. His mother was shocked and pained beyond measure. She understood the feelings of her son, and sympathized with him. Drawing him into the parlor, she soothed and cheered him with the assurance that when his cousin's anger passed she would explain and intercede. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for when reading beside the fire
I found this book on my mother's shelf, and found it interesting. Set at the end of the Civil War, the focus is on a Southern girl called Miss Lou who was orphaned at a young age and raised by her aunt and uncle. At 18,she wishes that her guardians would see she has grown up. When the battlesof the War start reaching the plantation, the characters are challenged inways they could not have predicted. While sometimes hard pressed tounderstand what the slaves were saying (the author writes in the mannerthey speak and doesn't use correct spelling), I found them portrayed in adifferent manner than is in the books written today. They had theirsuperstitions and were limited in their education, but faith, hope and lovewere certainly their strengths. Miss Lou is wonderful; she, althoughinexperienced, has the courage and gumption to stand up against injustice, whether against her or others. These qualities earn her the respect ofalmost everyone around her, espacially a Yankee soldier who befriends her.The only thing truly disappointing about this book was the end. It cuts offto a description of what the end was supposed to be like. I do not know ifthe author died before he could complete the book or if it was intended toend this way. But if you have an imagination then the characters in thebook will come alive and end it for you. ... Read more

But Miss Walton reminded him of a young sugar maple that he had noticed, all aflame, from his window that morning, so rich and high was her color, as, still intent upon the thickly scattered nuts, she followed the old unspent childish impulse to gather now as she had done when of Susie's age. With a half-wondering smile Gregory watched her intent expression, so like that of the other children, and thought, "Well, she is the freshest and most unhackneyed girl I have ever met for one who knows so much. It seems true, as she said, that she draws her life from nature and will never grow old. ... Read more

The clouded sky permitted only a cold gray light, in which everything stood out with wonderful distinctness. Even the dried weeds with their shrivelled seed-vessels were sharply defined against the snow. The beech leaves which still clung to the trees were bleached and white, but the foliage on the lower branches of the oaks was almost black against the hillside. Not a breath of air rustled them. At times Leonard would stop his horse, and when the jingle of the sleigh-bells ceased the silence was profound. Every vestige of life had disappeared in the still woods, or was hidden by the snow. ... Read more

I trust that this preliminary discussion in regard to red raspberries will prepare the way for the advice to follow, and enable the proprietor of the Home Acre to act intelligently. Sensible men do not like to be told, "You cannot do this, and must not do that"--in other words, to be met the moment they step into their gardens by the arbitrary dictum of A, B, or C. ... Then Clancy remarked lightly, "We had our share of disaster in the last August's cyclone. Lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place. The jar of Friday was only a little sympathetic symptom in old mother Earth, who, like other mothers and women in general, are said to be subject to nervous attacks. Suppose we settle down to our games." ... Read more

As Mr. Durand well puts it, new varieties, to be of value, should produce berries that "measure from four to eight inches in circumference, of good form, color and flavor; very large specimens are not expected to be perfect in form, yet those of medium size should always be. The calyx should never be imbedded in the flesh, which should be sufficiently firm to carry well, and withstand all changes of our variable climate. The texture should be fine, flesh rich, with a moderate amount of acid--no more than just sufficient to make it palatable with sugar as a table berry. ... Read more
