This workshop may be the next best thing! The Understanding C. S. Lewis workshop is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to one of the 20th Century's most versatile and engaging thinkers and writers: Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963). General readers, aspiring writers, teachers, pastors, and other professionals will gain insights into Lewis's prowess as a literary scholar, science-fiction novelist, Christian apologist, and children's fantasist. Workshop Leader: Dr. Bruce L. Edwards The workshop founder and main presenter is taught by Professor Bruce L. Edwards, the author of two books, a co-editor of the upcoming, C. S. Lewis: A Reader's Encyclopedia (Zondervan, 1998), and numerous articles on the life and work of Lewis. Dr. Edwards, an ordained minister, was Director of BGSU's graduate program in English for six years (1991-97), and now serves as Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Lewis at the University of Texas at Austin (1981). He is thoroughly familiar with Lewis's varied career, and has lectured widely on Lewis's life and times at universities and churches across the U. S., Ireland, Australia, and, most recently, East Africa. Dr. Edwards regularly features Lewis's works in his undergraduate and graduate classes at Bowling Green State University.

He whom I bow to only knows to whom I bow
When I attempt the ineffable Name, murmuring Thou
And dream of Pheidian fancies and embrace in heart
Symbols (I know) which cannot be the thing Thou art.
Thus always, taken at their word, all prayers blaspheme
Worshipping with frail images a folk-lore dream,
And all men in their praying, self-deceived, address
The coinage of their own unquiet thoughts, unless
Thou in magnetic mercy to Thyself divert Our arrows, aimed unskilfully, beyond desert; And all men are idolators, crying unheard To a deaf idol, if Thou take them at their word. Take not, O Lord, our literal sense.  Lord, in thy great Unbroken speech our limping metaphor translate. The Apologist's Evening Prayer From all my lame defeats and oh! much more From all the victories that I seemed to score; From cleverness shot forth on Thy behalf At which, while angels weep, the audience laugh;

The Bible and C. S. Lewis
Introduction
This web site is designed to promote the study of the works of C. S. Lewis. Clive Staples or "Jack" Lewis (1898-1963) was a tutor at Oxford University, England and later the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University, England. He wrote apologetics, science fiction, children and adult fantasy, and much more. His writings and radio talks became so popular that he was called an "apostle to the sceptics" by Time magazine. In recent years his life still draws interest: the movie "The Shadowlands" is based on his relationship with Joy Davidman. His imagination, the clarity of his writing style, the force of his apologetic and his integrity have influenced thousands of people. This site has Links to other Web Resources , information about upcoming C. S. Lewis Seminars and it has an extended outline of a discussion guide I wrote called The Bible and C. S. Lewis , which presents the Christian world-view. I added A Frequently Ask Question Page , which not only has questions and answers about C. S. Lewis and my discussion guide, but some favorable comments from readers of my guide. A hard (paper) copy of the guide is available on request. Finally, I created an online

Heidegger C. S. Lewis In Surprised by Joy , C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), the British literary scholar, novelist, popular theologian, and Oxford and Cambridge don (1925-1954, 1954-1963, respectively), admitted that his "Second Friend" Owen Barfield "changed me a good deal more than I him. Much of the thought which he afterward put into Poetic Diction had already become mine before that important little book appeared. It would be strange if it had not. He was of course not so learned then as he has since become; but the genius was already there." But it was, of course, Lewis who would go on to become the household word, the internationally known figure. Barfield has had much to say throughout his career on the life and mind of his more famous friend. (G. B. Tennyson's Owen Barfield on C S Lewis [1989] collected these in a single volume.) A sampling follows:
  • On Lewis' "subjective idealism" in contrast to Barfield's objective idealism:
  • What differentiated Lewis from other subjective idealists was that he was not content with studying all this as an academic exercise and accepting it as a theory which could have no possible influence on a man's actual behavior. He tried to live by it. He told us something of all this in Surprised by Joy (1955). And I suppose it was here in a sense that I came in. I had had no philosophical training, and I absorbed my subjective idealism from him. But I always had an obstinate feeling that there must be some way of bridging the gulf between the empirical self and the higher self or the Absolute. The argument between us went into all sorts of philosophical and psychological detail, and I remember getting into very hot water on one occasion after trying to maintain that a proposition might be true from one point of view and untrue from another. In these arguments, Lewis could always knock me down without much difficulty, and I learned more than I can say from those falls. (

CS Lewis (18981963) 'He does so many things he does nothing well' couldnot be said about CS 'Jack' Lewis. His conversion to Christianity
http://www.heroesofhistory.com/page32.html
T. D. Jakes  (1957-alive)
In 1996 T. D. said, "I found out the things that hurt us the most can become the fuel and the catalyst that propel us toward our destiny. It will either make you bitter or it will make you better. I wanted to be made better, not bitter."
By 1993 T. D. had endured grief and poverty in full measure. Drawing on that and the power of Jesus he became a superb counselor, especially to hurting women. His reputation spread among Pentecostals. A pastor friend in Pittsburgh asked him to come there to counsel women. T. D. agreed and named his conference - now well organized - after the miracle in 13 th chapter of Luke: 'Woman, Thou Art Loosed!'. The pastor in Pittsburgh spread the word about the conference for women who were hurting, wounded, anguished, abandoned.
When T. D. arrived in Pittsburgh he was flabbergasted to find 1300 women registered! He had to rent an enormous hotel ballroom. Many of the women were unchurched. They were so hurt they came to him in desperation. T. D. met the challenge by abandoning church rhetoric but not the message of the saving power of Jesus.
"Hidden inside of you is a great woman who can do great exploits in His name," he exhorted them.

    Clive Staples ("C.S.") Lewis
    Author and Critic
Lewis was born in Dundela Avenue, Strandtown, Belfast and baptised in St Mark's, Dundela, by his grandfather, Thomas Hamilton, who was rector there. In 1905 the family moved to "Little Lea" on the Circular Road, which his father had built; it is the location of the wardrobe which plays such an important role in his children's stories, The Chronicles of Narnia. The house however is privately owned and not accessible to the public. Lewis was educated in England, at Malvern College and University College, Oxford, his education being interrupted by military service during the First World War when he was wounded at the battle of Arras. On his return to university he graduated brilliantly and became Fellow and Tutor at Magdalen College (he later moved to Cambridge as Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature). Perhaps his best-known academic book is The Allegory of Love (about medieval literature), but he reached a wider audience through works of Christian apology like The Screwtape Papers and radio broadcasts on the same subject. The Narnia stories, originally composed for World War Two evacuees, brought him great success - although his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord Of The Rings, did not like them! In his later years he married the American Joy Gresham, who in 1960 died of cancer; his autobiography Surprised By Joy is partly inspired by her. The play and film Shadowlands tell a somewhat romanticised version of their story. Lewis died in 1963 and is buried at Holy Trinity Church, Haddington, Oxford.

    The Mere Christianity Study Guide

The English scholar, science-fiction writer, and Christian apologist Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland. He was educated privately and at the University of Oxford, and was a member of The Inklings, a group of Oxford writers including J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. A fellow and tutor at Oxford from 1925 to 1954, he was subsequently professor of medieval and Renaissance English literature at the University of Cambridge.
Lewis's critical works include Allegory of Love: A Study in Medieval Tradition (1936), which examines the connections between medieval literature and courtly love, and A Preface to Paradise Lost (1942). Lewis was known to a large public, however, as a persuasive and passionate advocate of conservative Christianity through books which examined and explained moral and religious problems. His Perelandra trilogy Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra (1943), and

    [Clive Staples]
Long before there was a Harry Potter, there were the works of JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis. And while the sensation they created may not have been nearly so frantic nor universal in those blessed premedia days, the fanaticism that they engendered was no less powerful. Our neighbor Mark Farris used to just start one series and read it, then start the other and read it and then start all over again. I wasn't quite that bad, but I do recall that one of the proudest accomplishments of my young life was actually completing both series, a feat that involved reading several thousand pages. Now, I'm certain that most of the metaphorical and allegorical nuances of these books completely escaped most of us at these early readings. But these books, along with comic books and pulp novels like Doc Savage and The Avenger, served one vital function, they demonstrated with incontrovertible certitude that there were such things as good and evil and that it was better to be good. Such books are often termed escapist fantasy and, for me at least, that was precisely their attraction; the opportunity that they offered, to escape from the disturbing moral relativism of the 60's and 70's, and enter worlds where the truths, that I sensed to be eternal and absolute, actually obtained. As much as parents or religion, it was books like these that formed the template from which our inchoate sense of morality was forged.
