Book Description
The final installment of the three-volume collected letters of C. S. Lewis, this volume contains the letters Lewis wrote during the last part of his life, spanning his time at Cambridge, his brilliant creation of the land of Narnia and the childrens series that followed, and his struggle with his wife Joys serious illness and death. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The great author as a character.
It was absolutely fascinating to crawl around inside the head of this brilliant man as he entered the most tumultuous period of his life.I cannot help but think of Till We Have Faces, as Lewis stuggles through the same difficult lessons of learning to let someone you love go into the arms of God and away from your own.Utterly real, this book is worth the 1700 page read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the deepest and most thought provoking of the collections
Given the fact that this letters collection deals mainly with the latter stages of Lewis's life, I really think this is the best of the three collections.

The main reason is that we get a clearer picture into the mind of the man who created Narnia, wrote the painfully honest and cathartic "A Grief Observed" after the loss of his wife, Joy and we start to see a man who takes faith to a new level in his life, from an intellectual and notionalistic approach to a real, raw encounter with God.

It is very easy to see how Lewis has influenced so many writers today, even the new gneration, who are just beginning to write. His legacy continues on in the minds and pens of Christian thinkers and writers who desperately want to help individuals grow closer to God and examine their faith to keep it vital.

And Lewis is relevant, as J.G. Marking, author of "A Voice Is Calling," so clearly stated, "I believe to some degree every Christian author is likened to C.S. Lewis because he is the intellectual and literary bar that we are all measured against. And thus, in some way, his voice will resonate in all of ours, maybe forever."

This collection reveals more of the soul of Lewis than the mind, which is an even more intriguing glance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Devotional Resource
Taken from a number of his most widely read works, A Year with C.S. Lewis, is a wonderful resource for Christians to consider many of the theological points of their faith in small nuggets upon which they can chew and digest without becoming overwhelmed.

I have been using this book for my lunchtime devotional reading and have found, without fail, that each day's reading is thought provoking and insightful.I have found the passages taken from "The Problem of Pain" and "A Grief Observed" to be the most compelling on a personal level.

What the reader will not find here is the sort of light, relentlessly optimistic writing often seen in devotional literature nor will he or she find a short bit of Scripture quoted and then expounded upon by some selection of Lewis' writing.Instead, what I have found are selections chosen for their ability to pierce cliches and platitudes and engage the reader's intellect both authentically and without pretense.

I strongly recommend this compilation for those who would like to go deeper into their own faith during their devotional times.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an awesome book!
C.S. Lewis is always great. This book is awesome. It contains daily, short but deep readings will help you grow in your spiritual life. You'll read it over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going Deeper
This CS Lewis book takes you on a year-long journey with rich insights from a master thinker. As daily excerpts from his other works, this compilation helps you rethink what you thought you knew and learn new what is worthy of thoughtful consideration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Daily Reading
This will not do for a daily devotional. With that being said, the daily portions are small enough that even an intellectual "non-Christian" as well as any Christian can read and enjoy.I include the intellectual non-Christian because the ideas in the book are weighty. It applies to the Christian because they are weighty ideas that are in support of the Christian world-view.It is a quick daystarter that will also give you insight into the works of C.S. Lewis and may inspire the reader to actually read his edifying literature.I recommend this to add to your daily read, not to replace it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold
How many of us can write a decent letter, by hand, in this day and age?Lewis wrote a bookful of letters that are not only decent, but fascinating, revealing his genius from the age of 15 to shortly before his death at 62.How this prolific writer, full time student and then professor, while also caring for the cantankerous mother of a friend killed in the war, managed to find the time for this is beyond amazing.Particularly useful to the bibliophile are his running commentaries on the books he is reading. There is an excellent index.Highly recommended, needs reprinting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent letters of Lewis's readings, thinkings and doings
C.S. Lewis believed that letters should be about a person's readings, thinkings, and doings, and this nearly half century of correspondence between Lewis and his friend Arthur Greeves richly fulfils all three of these areas.Only a few letters are by Greeves, the rest being Lewis's correspondence to him.Walter Hooper has done a fine job in ordering these letters and writing a fine introduction to fill in the background for these two.The letters are often funny, sometimes pensive, and usually insightful, but they are never dull.I enjoyed them greatly. ... Book Description
Discover great truths from C. S. Lewis’s mentors

C. S. Lewis was perhaps the greatest Christian thinker of the twentieth century. He delighted us in The Chronicles of Narnia, intrigued us in The Screwtape Letters, mystified us in The Space Trilogy, and convinced us in Mere Christianity. His influence on generations of Christians has been immeasurable.

But who influenced C. S. Lewis? What were the sources of his inspiration? Who were his spiritual mentors? Who were his teachers?

Drawn from Lewis’s personal library, annotations, and references from his writings, the selections in this book bring us into contact with giants such as Dante, Augustine, and Chaucer, as well as introduce us to more contemporary writers such as G. K. Chesterton, Charles Williams, George MacDonald, and J. R. R. Tolkien. Over 250 selections provide a vast array of inspiration from those who have shone forth as messengers of light in Lewis’s own thinking, writing, and spiritual growth.

A rare glimpse into the intellectual, spiritual, and creative life of one of literature’s great writers, From the Library of C. S. Lewis is a treasury of insight and wisdom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound insight into the Lewis' spiritual journey
C.S. Lewis is one of this centuries most influential writers/thinkers.This book does an excellent job of giving us deep insight into the writings which had a profound influence on Lewis' own spiritual pilgrimage.Even if you have only aremote interest in his writings or thought, get this book.If I could give higher than 5 stars I would.Great!!

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect "grazing" material for Lewis fans
As possibly the most popular and influential Christian intellectual of the 20th century, Lewis has generated great interest in his literary and spiritual influences. As one looks further and further into the subject, there is an impossible desire to read every book that Lewis loved. This book (the most fascinating "Lewis-related" book I've seen) collects short excerpts (most are a single page) from writers who influenced Lewis, thus giving the reader a taste of many fascinating writers and making it possible for one to focus in on a few avenues for further exploration in the future. Looking through the book, it's just hard to believe that no one ever thought of doing this before. ... Read more

Book Description
This reissue of a treasured classic offers a beautiful window into the people and places that shaped the life of beloved author, scholar, and apologist C. S. Lewis. In photographs and text (much of it in Lewis's own words), Douglas Gilbert and Clyde S. Kilby introduce us to such memorable friends as J. R. R. Tolkien and transport us to such magical places as the deer park outside Lewis's rooms at Magdalen College, Oxford. We also meet Lewis as a talented and brilliant child in Belfast, captivated by the myths and legends of the North, already writing and illustrating imaginative stories and poems at a young age.

While the book includes an essay tracing Lewis's struggle to find faith and a chronology of his life, it is not a biography per se but rather a personal introduction, a composite portrait of a fascinating individual and the world in which he lived. Attractively laid out in a fresh new format, this volume will be prized both by longtime fans of Lewis and by those encountering him for the first time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Revised images from C.S. Lewis's World
This reissue of the out of print C.S. Lewis: Images of His World puts together a fine collection of photos depicting the places Lewis lived and visited as well as the people he knew.It does a good job of filling in the imagination for the reader of C.S. Lewis. The photos are accompanied by subtexts explaining each picture's content and in many cases they are accompanied by a quotation from one of Lewis's works. An introduction, chronology of Lewis's life, and brief biographical sketch complete the work.

Although this is a reissue of the original book that came out in 1973, there has been a major overhaul to the layout, yielding both positive and negative results.First, the new edition is slightly smaller in size.Second, the orientation has been changed: the original book was 9 inches high and 11 inches wide, whereas the new book is just the opposite orientation of 10 1/2 inches high and 8 inches wide; (imagine a regular magazine and you have the layout for the new edition; turn the magazine on its side and put the binding on the left and you have the layout of the old edition.)These changes unfortunately have resulted in some photos that were formerly seen in their entirety on one page now being split over two pages.Result: artistically inferior.

The third change, is that the order of the photos has undergone a major reshuffling, as has the texts that accompany them. Most of the material in the first book still appears in the second, but the order is different.(A couple of C.S. Lewis drawings in letters to Owen Barfield that appeared in the first edition of this book have been dropped from the new edition.)

The fourth change is quite positive. It is amazing to see what a difference a mere three decades can make in photo reproductive technology. The book has a mixture of black & white and color photos, and while the black & white photos don't change much between the first and second edition of this book, the color photos are FAR better in the new edition. The subjects depicted have had their color restored and no longer appear to be so drab: one is reminded of what the Sistine Chapel looked like before and after the late 20th century restoration.Photos of such things as Tintern Abbey or Beaumaris Castle are brought to life by the new technology and are much more pleasing to the eye.

To sum, many overall changes have been made to the quality of the photos as well as the layout of their presentation.I think the net effect is zero: two steps forward and two steps backwards. It's a pity, really, because the old layout could have been kept while using new photo reproductive technology to enhance the photos.Oh well, the bottom line is that if you don't have a copy of this book, by all means buy it - you'll be pleased with the purchase. If you have the original book, you still might want to purchase the new edition as many of the photos have been vividly enhanced.(Conversely, if you have the new edition and run across a copy of the old, this, too, is worth obtaining for the better layout of some of the photos.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Photos, text in a reissued classic
If C.S. LEWIS: IMAGES OF HIS WORLD sounds familiar to avid scholars of Lewis, it's because this is a reissue of a classic which probes the people and places which inspired the religious author. Photos and text - much of which are Lewis's own words - survey his friendships, beloved places, friends, family and colleagues in a fine survey of his life and faith. Lewis was captivated by the myths and legends of the North as a young child: his interest served as both a starting point for his involvement in religion and as a starting point for his literary creations. Any who would understand Lewis will find this a visual treat and a powerful starting point for understanding his vast wellspring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A journey into the shadowlands
If you love C.S. Lewis as much as I do, then you will find this book captivating, transporting you into the world of Jack as a boy and as a man, as a pagan and as a Christian. Hopefully it will be back in print soon. Every page is lavishly illustrated with photos and artwork of people and places that were dear to Lewis. What makes it even more special are the descriptions of each place or person by lewis himself, taken from his letters and books. IT is the best gift a Lewis fan could receive, too, so look for a friend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully descriptive book
It is most unfortunate that this superb book has gone out of print. It is a pictorial tour of the places and people familiar to C.S. Lewis.Next to each picture or illustration is a caption explaining the relation to Lewis, with most of the country scenes having vivid, picturesque quotes from Lewis himself. This book can be read in one sitting or slowly digested over several days.If you ever find a copy, hang on to it.It's a lovely book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is a Keeper
I have bought copies of this book for friends...for sure I'm not about to give up my early copy. Reading it is like listening in on rich conversations. To me, dipping into these familiar pages is like visiting beloved friends who are much smarter than I am. Peters draws me up to C.S.Lewis's level of thinking and reasoning for a while. A happy exercise because in the past Lewis has sometimes left me in the dust.

My only problem with the previous review: If the reviewer liked the book so much, why only four stars???

4-0 out of 5 stars I wish THIS intro to Lewis had been available 20 years ago!
"Not for Beginners Only" would be a better subtitle. My happy aquaintance with Lewis goes back many years, but I'd not thought to dig to see what other kinds of gems there were in his writings than those I'd first stumbled upon.Mine tends to be a Some-stuff-interests-me-and- other-stuff-doesn't kind of mentality.

This book impells me to a much wider appreciation for Lewis by way of the author's logic and insightful discussions. It's a pleasurable read! In the past I've been put off by the phrase "in other words..."followed, as they tend to be, by the obvious.I'm thinking, "Yeah, yeah, let's get on with it."Not so with Peters. He says, "In other words" and offers me a truly fresh, deeper insight than was at first obvious. And I'm thinking, "Oh, yeah! Of course! Why didn't I think of that?" I so appreciated Peters' well-expressed views that I found myself thoroughly savoring his marvelous intro tothe pr! evailing thoughts/ideas of the 19th century in his second chapter. ("Setting the Stage") Let's face it.Learning ought to be a joy, and Peters serves up a most palatable sociology. I came away with far more than I'd bargained for.

If you're looking for light summer reading, mindless and forgettable, a paperback you can toss without a second thought--you've got the wrong book.

If you're looking for something that catches and sticks with you, draws you into some real thought, and lifts you in the process, this is your book.

After reading Peters'"Simply C.S.Lewis: A Beginner's Guide to His Life and Works,"I see the familiar in a gratifying new light, and want to reread. And it goes without saying that now I'm eager to get to treasures of Lewis's which I've overlooked in the past. ... Read more

Book Description
In this intimate, candid, and sometimes surprising community biography of the celebrated author and Christian apologist, twenty-four men and women who knew C.S. Lewis—as teacher, colleague, friend—offer their reminiscences and impressions of the complex man behind the critical and academic acclaim.

Through their recollections, we see "Jack" Lewis dazzling Oxford as he takes on atheists, materialists, and a host of other challengers. Most poignantly, we see him in everyday settings: striding up and down the platform at a railroad station, presiding over leisurely dinners with students, expounding on the virtues of the pub.

"The net effect of this collection," said the Catholic Review, "is to make us feel that we know Lewis as well as [his] friends."And to quote the New Yorker, "The heterogeneity of the contributors assures a variety of Lewises, but certain traits appear in all these accounts: intelligence, imagination, gusto, a sense of fun, and, most frequently, magnanimity." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars important reprint with unfortunate preface to this new edition
Reprint of "C. S. Lewis at the Breakfast Table," an important Lewis resource. My only concern is the regrettable negative comments, in the Preface to the Third Edition, by the editor James Como, on the former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, who retired in 2002, THREE YEARS before this present volume was published.Mr. Como uses these comments to address what he sees as wrong with the present state of Anglicanism, even going so far as to compare Carey with the episcopal ghost in "The Great Divorce"!While Mr. Como's view of the Anglican Church today would certainly have to be considered fair game in a new preface to this volume, to zero in at this point on Carey is odd, to say the least. Not only is the man now well into retirement, he is, as is well known, also one of the more distinctly theologically conservative Archbishops of recent times, the sole exception to this being the ordination of women. There are many other ways Como could have made his points, easily, without coming across, strangely and gratuitously, as expressing a personal animus.Truly regrettable, especially in a volume such as this -- and a serious lapse of judgement on the part of both the editor and publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book but be warned -
This is an excellent book on C. S. Lewis, but it is a re-publication by a differnt publisher, and they have retitled the book; it was previously published under the title "C.S. Lewis at the Breakfast Table." So if you already have that book as I did, this one is exactly the same. ... Read more
