Olympic critics need to rethink their line of attack
Lynn McConnell - 6 October 2000
Cricket may not be an Olympic sport, but New Zealand Cricket operations manager John Reid has a degree of sympathy for sports facing criticism in the post-Games witch-hunt. Reid said he could not believe the criticism being offered by people who were obviously not aware of sporting structures in place in New Zealand. "People are saying we should be teaching children to win from the outset and that we need to be more like the Australians," Reid said. "The point they are missing is that all that we do in cricket is what the Australians do. "Our cricket for young children is Kanga cricket which was developed by the Australians. "And at the lowest levels, for kids who are six or seven, it is all about developing participation and skills. It is not all about winning at that age," he said. It was the same for all sports. The time to develop the winning attitude was in the high school years. The other thing needing to be realised was that New Zealand was first and foremost a rugby country.

Woods, Wallabies may be going for gold
By Isabel Fox and AAP August 30 2002 Australian officials yesterday joined the fight over whether Tiger Woods and George Gregan should get the chance to compete in the Beijing 2008 Olympics while softballers, baseballers and pentathletes sit at home. The International Olympic Committee program commission recommends introducing golf, rugby sevens and an undisclosed sport at the expense of softball, baseball and modern pentathlon. Its report was delivered to IOC executives yesterday. The proposal is part of the IOC's bid to modernise the Olympic program. Other events, including walking, Greco-Roman wrestling and the three-day event in equestrian, are also under review. Softball Australia chief executive Neil Dalrymple said his organisation was "extremely disappointed" with the recommendation to cut softball. "We have 46,000 registered players and we would lose a lot of impetus for softball in Australia. Being an Olympic event raises the profile and marketability of the sport," he said.

The ideal: Faster growth, Higher ratings and Stronger celebrity appeal
By Jacquelin Magnay September 6 2002 THERE'S NO GOLD IN THEM THRILLS Sports at risk of being eliminated from Olympic program: Baseball, softball, modern pentathlon, slalom canoeing, lightweight rowing, keel classes in sailing, Greco-Roman wrestling, race walking, some shooting events, three-day equestrian, synchronised-swimming team competition, mixed doubles badminton. Non-Olympic sports rejected for inclusion: Roller sport, polo, surfing, bridge, chess, air sports, billiards, boules, dance sport, bowling, racquetball, water skiing, squash, underwater sports. Millions of dollars of sponsorship money and prestige are at stake. Being included on the Olympic program is not just a promotional ego trip and the premier goal for athletes, it is recognised as big, big business. "We are talking about money, television exposure and jobs for officials," said one International Olympic Committee member.

London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games - Reuters Govt Postpones Olympic Decision
13/02/2003 08:26 AM Reuters
The government has again postponed a decision on whether to launch a bid for London to host the 2012 Olympic Games and a decision may not come for another two weeks. The government was expected to decide whether London should bid for the Olympics at a meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair's cabinet on Thursday but the issue has been pushed to the bottom of the agenda. "Because of the pressures of other business we haven't got round to doing the necessary thinking through on this one," Blair's official spokesman told a news briefing. "I think it will take a bit longer."

The Paralympian: Wheelchair rugby is one of the Paralympic sports that does not have an Olympic equivalent and is therefore considered unique to the Paralympic Games. What is the history behind the sport and what makes it so popular? Pawel Zbieranowski: TP: What are some of the new developments in wheelchair rugby? In which areas could it be further developed?

Dumb Olympic Sports
Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)
