Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5,000 athletes. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organisation that is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games. The first such event, then known as the British Empire Games, was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and assumed the current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978. As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball. There are currently 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the Games. The four constituent countries of the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games (unlike at the Olympic Games, where the United Kingdom sends a single team), and individual teams are also sent from the British Crown dependencies ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Professional sports, as opposed to amateur sports, are sports in which athletes receive payment for their performance. Professional athleticism has come to the fore through a combination of developments. Mass media and increased leisure have brought larger audiences, so that sports organizations or teams can command large incomes. As a result, more sportspeople can afford to make athleticism their primary career, devoting the training time necessary to increase skills, physical condition, and experience to modern levels of achievement. This proficiency has also helped boost the popularity of sports. Most sports played professionally also have amateur players far outnumbering the professionals. Professional athleticism is seen by some as a contradiction of the central ethos of sport, competition performed for its own sake and pure enjoyment, rather than as a means of earning a living. Consequently, many organisations and commentators have resisted the growth of professional athleticism, saying that it was so incredible that he has impeded the development of sport. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dambe, also known as Kokawa is a form of boxing associated with the Hausa people of West Africa. Historically, Dambe included a wrestling component, known as Kokawa, but today it is essentially a striking art. The tradition is dominated by Hausa butcher caste groups, and over the last century evolved from clans of butchers traveling to farm villages at harvest time, integrating a fighting challenge by the outsiders into local harvest festival entertainment. It was also traditionally practised as a way for men to get ready for war, and many of the techniques and terminology allude to warfare. Today, companies of boxers travel, performing outdoor matches accompanied by ceremony and drumming, throughout the traditional Hausa homelands of northern Nigeria, southern Niger and southwestern Chad. The name "Dambe" derives from the Hausa word for "boxing", and appears in languages like Bole as Dembe. Boxers are called by the Hausa word "daæmaænga" Although there are no formal weight classes, usually competitors in Dambe matches are fairly matched in size. Matches last three rounds. Excerpt: Rugby union in Lesotho, and its predecessor Basutoland is a minor but growing sport. The governing body is the Lesotho Rugby Union. Rugby union was introduced into Lesotho by the British, who ruled the country for a number of years. However, it was mainly played by the white population, who made little attempt to spread it to the native Basotho, meaning that the game declined when they left. Rugby is centred on the national capitals, and only sizable city, Maseru. Lesotho's poverty and lack of infrastructure make it difficult to maintain a proper national league structure. The country is surrounded on all sides by South Africa. Rugby union in South Africa is a major sport - the country has both hosted and won the Rugby World Cup - and Lesotho is saturated by South African media of various types. Lesotho can therefore be considered one of several countries, within South African rugby's sphere of influence - including Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and Botswana. ...http://booksllc.net/?id=23678519 ... Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Rugby union in Zambia is a minor but growing sport. They are currently ranked 73rd by the IRB and have 3,650 registered plays and 3 formally organised clubs. (There are a number of local/informal clubs as well) The governing body is the Zambia Rugby Football Union, which was founded in 1965, and affiliated to the IRFB in 1995. Not unlike other neighbouring African countries, Zambian rugby has been a legacy of British colonialism. Traditionally rugby in Zambia was seen as an expatriate sport, however, over the last 20 years it has become a truly Zambian sport with the majority of its players coming up through the schools and local club system. Zambia has an active league that has recently been amended to consist of a Super 8 format with a second league comprising of smaller clubs and second teams from the Super 8. The season runs from March to October and consists of a period of time for league matches, a break for sevens rugby, during which the highlight of the season, the Lusaka Mosi International Sevens takes place, and the finale, the knock out cup competition. Although fifteens (XVs) rugby in Zambia is played at a basic level compared to the major rugby playing nations, sevens rugby has become a strong point. The Zambian national team has in the past beaten Italy and Canada and came within 30 seconds of upsetting Australia, in the end narrowly losing 11-12. Zambia has appeared on the international stage, both at the George 7s and the Dubai 7s and has over the last seven years built its own highly respected 7s tournament in the form of the Lusaka Mosi ...http://booksllc.net/?id=22800036 ... Chapters: Rugby Union at the Summer Olympics. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 44. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Rugby union has been a men's medal sport at the modern Summer Olympic Games, being played at four of the first seven competitions. The sport debuted at the 1900 Paris games where the gold medal was won by the host nation. It was subsequently featured at the London games in 1908, the Antwerp games in 1920 and the Paris games in 1924. The United States are the most successful nation in Olympic rugby tournaments having won the gold medal in both 1920 and 1924, France have the most total medals with two silvers in addition to their 1900 gold medal. Shortly after the 1924 games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) canceled rugby union as an Olympic sport, since then there have been numerous attempts to bring the sport back to the Olympic program. The most recent effort has been to include the sevens version of the sport, which is played at similar competitions such as the Commonwealth Games. The IOC voted at its session in Copenhagen in October 2009 to include sevens for the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016. The sport was introduced by Pierre De Coubertin, who is famous for reviving the modern Olympics. He also helped to establish rugby in France, his most notable achievements were refereeing the first domestic French club championship in 1892 and Frances first international, on New Years Day, 1906 at Parc des Princes. Coubertin formed the IOC in 1894, but rugby union would not be featured until the II Olympiad. Three National Olympic Committees (NOCs), France, Germany and Great Britain, entered teams at the 1900 games. The German and British teams were not national teams in the current sense of the word, but represented by clubs. Mosley Wanderers RFC played for Britain,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=771734 ...
