Culture
After centuries of foreign rule, it should come as no surprise that Luxembourg's population is composed of about 30% foreigners - the highest ratio of any EU country. Today's invading hordes, however, cross the borders quietly, caps in hand, nurturing sweet dreams of employment opportunities rather than pillage and plunder. Luxembourg's per capita GDP was the world's highest in 1997, its standard of living consistently rates among the best, and its workforce boasts a remarkably low unemployment rate. Not bad for a country with a population about 30 times less than that of Los Angeles. Squashed in between two major historical world powers (and having been conquered at times by both of them), Luxembourg takes a good deal of its identity from its neighbours' contributions. This shows itself both in the generally amicable relationship between the countries and their citizens and in their shared linguistic traits. Multilingualism is universal among Luxembourgers, and both the German and French languages are used in the press, in politics and in daily life. French is most common in government and schools, though Luxembourgish is the language you'll hear most frequently on the street. English is widely understood in tourist areas. Luxembourg's cuisine is similar to that of Belgium's Wallonia region - plenty of pork, fish and game - but also features some heavy German influence in local specialties like liver dumplings with sauerkraut. Its beer (like that of neighbouring Belgium) is not too shabby; neither are the Moselle Valley's fruity white wines.

Saarland - a land of culture
Culture, simply put, is the way a land lives. Seen from this point of view, the culture of Saarland is friendly and colourful; everywhere and for everyone all the time. It's plain to see in Saarbrücken and throughout the land. In places such as the State Theater, the Völklingen steel works, museums, concert halls, and established film, theater and music festivals, you can find cross-border specialties, international standards and vital alternative culture. Between the church and the cellar club are cultural initiatives large and small, and great cuisine is often a part of the experience.
The cultural map of the region offers further riches. Towns and communities can work with a highly developed structure of clubs and associations to organize a wide variety of events that are sometimes deeply traditional, sometimes unconventional, but always interesting.
History can be re-lived in many locations. Architectural landmarks show the way to the future. Quality, diversity, action and a taste for the extraordinary are the characteristics of Saarland culture. Without overlooking what is typical of this land, one can make nationwide and international comparisons. There's so much to discover, and it's unmistakable: Saarland has international neighbours, which makes the region especially attractive. Whether it's an excursion to Lorraine or to nearby Luxembourg: culture is the way a region lives.

    • Fairy tale kingdom with magnificent, medieval castles towering over quaint villages. World-renown center of commerce and banking. One of the most photogenic cities in Europe. Land of friendly, cordial, multi-lingual natives

Located in the very heart of Europe, Luxembourg is just four hours drive from Paris, three from Frankfurt, five from Amsterdam or Basel. This delightful little country is located on the crossroads of several major highways; so a driving tour of Europe may take you through Luxembourg. (Don't blink or you might miss it.)
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is just 60 kilometers (36 miles) wide east to west and 90 km. (51 miles) long north to south. This small country has a total area of 2586 square km. (999 sq. miles) and a population of about 400,000. Click here for a Map of Luxembourg
Luxembourg City, capital of the Grand Duchy, is a modern business and banking center as well as a picturesque, thousand-year-old, walled citadel, built atop naturally fortified rock cliffs. Here is a small Map of Luxembourg City covering the historic old town.

A Short History of this Small Country
The Luxembourg national motto (52.5k jpg) is: "Mir wölle bleiwen wat mir sin" or "We want to remain what we are." Considering the long history of this little country and the intensely independent character of its natives, one can see that it fits very well.
Luxembourg was first established in 963 when Count Siegfried acquired the fortress of Lucilinburhuc from Saint Maximinius Abbey in Trier. It flourished as a Duchy in the medieval Europe for nearly 500 years and the dynasty founded by Siegfried provided some of the leading figures of the German empire in the 14th century. It fell under Burgundian domination in 1443. Over the next 400 years, Spanish, French and Austrian armies took turns occupying the fortified capital. In 1815, after the breakup of the napoleonean empire, Luxembourg became a Grand-Duchy under Dutch ruling and finally regained its independence in 1839.
It was occupied during most of the duration of both World Wars but the Luxembourg people resisted and fought valiantly to regain their independence.

Order Typical Luxembourg gifts in our online shop Welcome to Luxembourg, I'm Siggy. I bear the name of Siegfried, Count of the Ardennes, who founded Luxembourg around the year 963. Today our sovereign is Grand Duke-Henri, who reigns over an independent sovereign State, forming a constitutional monarchy. The country has a surface area of 2,587 square kilometres, of which one third is covered by forest. Nowadays, the population is more than 430,000. My fellow countrymen, the "Luxembourgeois" are trilingual: they speak Lëtzebuergesch (the national language), French and German. The economic structure of my country rests upon the banking sector as well as insurance, telecommunications, the steel and engineering industry, tourism, agriculture and wine-growing. Situated at the very heart of Western Europe, my country has always been at its crossroads. Indeed, Robert Schuman, "Father of Modern Europe", was born here. Luxembourg is also home for several European institutions and has provided two Presidents to the European Commission, Gaston Thorn and Jacques Santer. I would like to help you discover the five tourist regions, each with their distinctly different countryside. The Ardennes, by the mythical rocks of the Mullerthal, by the kingdom of the vine in the Moselle Valley, and by the industrial and architectural heritage of our country in the "Land of the Red Rocks".

Country Info Luxembourg Introduction Luxembourg General Data Luxembourg Maps Luxembourg Culture ... Luxembourg Time and Date Luxembourg Culture Back to Top Over a 400-year period, Luxembourg Castle (Château de Luxembourg) was repeatedly attacked and rebuilt by the Spaniards, Austrians, French, and Dutch, successively, to become the strongest fortress in Europe after Gibraltar. One such reinforcement was undertaken by the French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, who redesigned the city's defensive fortifications after having orchestrated its siege in 1684 in the service of Louis XIV. The Grand Ducal Palace (Palais Grand-Ducal) is home to the royal family, heirs of William I (1772–1843), king of The Netherlands and grand duke of Luxembourg (1815–40). The palace dates from 1572, and later additions were made in 1895. After renovations were completed in the 1990s, portions of the palace were opened to the public. The heart of the old town is the Fish Market (Marché-aux-Poissons), around which stand several 17th- and 18th-century buildings, including the mansion housing the Luxembourg National Museum (National Museum of History and Art). Um Bock, a 13th-century building and the city's oldest, is also located at the Fish Market. Among the city's other cultural institutions are the Jean-Pierre Pescatore Museum (1966) of fine arts and the History Museum of the City of Luxembourg (1996). At the town of Hamm 4 miles (6 km) to the east is a World War II military cemetery with the graves of more than 5,000 U.S. soldiers, including those of Brigadier General Edward Betts and General George S. Patton, Jr.
