Excerpt: Luxembourg wine is primarily produced in the southeastern part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with vineyards overlooking the Moselle River. Along this river, which for 42 km makes up part of the border between Luxembourg and Germany, wine is made in three countries. There is a continuous history of winemaking along Moselle and in Luxembourg going back to Ancient Roman times. Wine production in 2006/07 was 123,652 hectoliter from 1,237 hectares (3,060 acres) of vineyards. Out of total wine exports of 87,776 hectoliter in 2005/06, 71,726 hectoliter or 82% was exported to nearby Belgium. Exports to Germany was the second largest at 8,168 hectoliter, or 9%, and is to a large extent made up of base wine in bulk for the production of blended Sekt rather than being sold bottled with "Luxembourg" anywhere on the label. Therefore, very little Luxembourg wine is seen outside Luxembourg and Belgium. In terms of volume, the wine production in Luxembourg is dominated by a number of winemaking cooperatives. The cooperatives in Greiveldange, Grevenmacher, Remerschen, Stadtbredimus and Wellenstein source their wines from over 800 hectares of vineyards (almost two thirds of Luxembourg's vineyard surface) and sell their wines under the common name of "Vinsmoselle". In addition, they operate a sparkling wine plant in Wormeldange, which produces wines under the label Poll-Fabaire. Luxembourg mainly produces dry white wines and sparkling wine under the designation Crémant. There are also some rosé and red wines made, as well as some sweet wines. Excerpt: Alsace (French: ; Alsatian: Elsàss ; German: , pre-1996: Elsaß, IPA: ; Latin: ) is the fourth-smallest of the 26 regions of France in land area (8,280 km²), and the smallest in metropolitan France. It is also the sixth-most densely populated region in France and third most densely populated region in metropolitan France, with ca. 220 inhabitants per km² (total population in 2006: 1,815,488; January 1, 2008 estimate: 1,836,000). Alsace is located on France's eastern border and on the west bank of the upper Rhine adjacent to Germany and Switzerland. The political, economic and cultural capital as well as largest city of Alsace is Strasbourg. Due to that city being the seat of dozens of international organizations and bodies, Alsace is politically one of the most important regions in the European Union. The name "Alsace" derives from the Germanic Ell-sass, meaning "Seated on the Ill", a river in Alsace. The region was historically part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was gradually annexed by France in the 17th century under kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV and made one of the provinces of France. Alsace is frequently mentioned in conjunction with Lorraine, because German possession of parts of these two régions (as the imperial province Alsace-Lorraine, 18711918) was contested in the 19th and 20th centuries, during which Alsace changed hands four times between France and Germany in 75 years. Although the historical language of Alsace is Alsatian, a Germanic language, today most Alsatians speak French, the official language of the country they have been a par...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=48129 ... Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Luxembourg face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts to Luxembourg? How important is Luxembourg compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts vary from one country of origin to another in Luxembourg? On the supply side, Luxembourg also exports human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. Which countries receive the most exports from Luxembourg? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Luxembourg. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts for those countries serving Luxembourg via exports, or supplying from Luxembourg via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Luxembourg fits into the world market for imported and exported human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Luxembourg in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Luxembourg is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Luxembourg compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

Excerpt:Participating participants Countries who have participated in the past but did not this year The Eurovision Song Contest 1973 was the eighteenth Eurovision Song Contest and was held in Luxembourg. The language rule forcing countries to enter songs sung in any of their national languages was dropped, so performers from some countries sang in English. The event was marked by a scandal when the Spanish song, "Eres tú", was accused of plagiarism following suggestions that it was merely a rewrite of the Yugoslav entry from the 1966 contest ("Brez besed" sung by Berta Ambro). "Eres tú" was not disqualified. After placing second in the contest, the song went on to become a huge international hit. The somewhat elliptical lyrics to Portugal's entry "Tourada" provided sufficient cover for a song that was clearly understood as a blistering assault on the country's decaying dictatorship. Also, the word "breasts" was used during Sweden's song entry. However, no word if any action was taken by the EBU. An argument broke out between the singer Maxi and her Irish delegation over how the song should be performed. During rehearsals she repeatedly stopped performing in frustration. When it began to appear possible that Maxi may withdraw from the contest, RTÉ immediately sent over another singer, Tina Reynolds, to take her place just in case. In the end M... Product Description
This volume examines the sociocultural factors that influence language choices and uses in the multilingual country of Luxembourg. Patterns of language use within and across communities are viewed in terms of interrelationships among language policy intent, implementation and experience. The study considers the ways in which the language and social experiences within a socioeconomic communities differ from school expectations and how these differences affect achievement of both individual and government goals. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
A very nice depiction of certain strands/slices of Belgium. Some funny parts, too. I recommend it if you're thinking about traveling and/or living in Belgium.

4-0 out of 5 stars What about the Belgian coast?
This book has pleasantly surprised me by its accurateness and humor. The fact that the author was married to a Belgian was crucial in writing this book, although I must admit that he also did an enormous amount of work on the research of the history.
This book would have received a 5-star rating if he hadn't so grossly neglected a very important area: the 67 km long coast line. The West-Flemish people are a breed on their own and have a myriad of customs and culture that decidedly differs from the inland. Considering the fact that the coast population in towns like Knokke are multiplied by 10 during the summer season, should give you an inkling of the diversity these people are accustomed to. Dialects are already different in pronunciation and colloqualisms in the next town of 3-5 km apart. The Belgian coast is responsible for the greatest income of the country, and the Flemish workers (in 't zwart) are some of the most industrious people around. If the royal family found the coast important enough to own several house along it, it certainly deserves more merit in this book. It is very apparent that the author's influence was dominated by his Brussels wife.Even some of the flemish words are not pronounced correctly or spelled right because of this inland influence (i.e.:ballekes, which is a typical non-West-Flemish word. the High Flemish (Dutch) term is much closer to the West Flemish "balletjes")
A lot of the customs and habits only reflect a small part of the Belgian people, usually the ones in big cities.
Still, buy the book, you'll learn more than you evfer want to know about this quaint country. Just make sure that when you visit it, make time away from all the museums and visit the flatlands of West-Flanders, and you'll come away with a whole lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars True to life!
When reading this book I was really surprised by its accuracy and liveliness. The author succeeds in putting everything I would like to tell my non-Belgian friends in an extremely readable book (I finished it in one night). The point of view of the author is unique in the sense that he is a foreigner (British) but is married to a Belgian and has been living there long enough to know the small things of life.I would recommend this book to anybody remotely interested in Belgium. For those that are not, I can assure you that your interest will be certainly piqued by reading this book. For me this book is a great gift for a friend interested in my country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun
As Belgian myself it was funny read this book which is humorous but too much accurate about many things that we know is true in our people but surprised to read in a book!
Book is a very nice introduction to my country for people coming to live here and know about, but don't worry - not all the drivers are so bad and dangerous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Never visited, but feel like I have
Mark Elliott has written a very entertaining - and if my Belgian friends are to be believed - accurate account of Belgian culture. Not a classic guidebook with lists of places to visit and restaurants to patronize, this book truly lives up to its title. The book contains a great deal of humor which makes the Belgians come alive for the reader. The book has definitely made me put Belgium on my list of places I wish to visit. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good overview of the country
This book has slightly dated information. Much information is generalized. Great for understanding the history, food, and activities of the country. Yet there were several times the author claimed many facts as true when they were just his personal opinions. Best if complemented with other books or resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
Good book, maybe a little shorter than I thought, it has 300 pages, but large letters and small pages

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a boring country and so is the book
I like very much this series and although was intended to expatriates you may use the book for travels. This volume for Belgium was a fine complementation to the much more academic book A throne in Brussels;some bits are hilarious and you could learn very much about waloon/flemish conflict. The design of the series(first impressions;land and history, settling in,food and drink, culture, sport and travel, language, business and work and quiz to test yourself)is always efficient. You could use this for a global vision and then search in other books(some are indicated)or sites(a lot indicated)to deep down. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fun and informative guide
Having just returned from the Netherlands, we found this book to be very helpful and also an icebreaker with new Dutch friends, who thought some of the observations about their national character and customs were spot-on while others were amusing. Also, citizens were surprised that I knew a fair bit of history as well as more contemporary information about national politics etc. This was a handy guide to the basics of functioning in this wonderful country.I would recommend this to travellers.Very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars most informative read
This book is clear and concise. The format makes it very easy to read from cover to cover or to select a couple of chapters. I have lived in the Netherlands for 10yrs and enjoyed it immensely. I have also sent the book to my relatives in the UK and they found it an enlightening read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a stay in the Netherlands.

5-0 out of 5 stars smart buy
Of all the travel books about The Netherlands that I used in the 10 years of living there, this was the best. It was up-to-date, concise and informative. It makes a great gift for anyone planning a trip to the Netherlands and has useful information for locals and travellers alike. The size of the book makes for easy carring around.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic overview
I'm moving to the Netherlands next month. I bought this book as I had one from this series when I moved to Kuala Lumpur - that book was invaluable. This one hasn't the same kind of info I had hoped for. The information presented here is interesting and helpful, but not what I was looking for. I've ordered "The Holland Handbook" in hopes of finding the info I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Go to Belgium
We are going to Belgum in October and this book is just what I wanted.
I know the country is divided by languages and the book advised me not to bring this up unless my guests bring it up. Also, to bring a gift when invited to someone's home and try to reciprocate.
The political parties are diverse and much more complicated than ours.
Excellent preparatory book for our visit.
