Nurses' pay
The NHS Pla n for England, acknowledged that, 'the biggest constraint the NHS faces today is no longer the shortage of financial resources..' . It is shortage of human resources' Improving nurses' pay is the most effective and simplest way to recruit and retain more nurses.
Nurses' and midwives' pay is set by an independent Pay Review Body (PRB). It takes evidence from trade unions, professional organisations, NHS employers and the health departments of England, Wales and Scotland before making recommendations to Government. NHS nurses' pay in Northern Ireland follows the PRB recommendations. Evidence to the PRB is usually given in the autumn, with the PRB report and Government response published in the winter and the new pay award taking effect the following April.
Nurses are paid on a salary scale ranging from A to I according to clinical grade. Grades A - C cover nursing staff who are not registered nurses, such as health care assistants. Grade D is the starting point for a newly qualified registered nurse. A junior sister might be on Grade F, and a ward manager or experienced community nurse on Grade G. Consultant nurses (see below) have a pay scale overlapping with I Grade nurses.
