Product Description
In recent years, Protestant churches and denominations have become increasingly concerned with issues of racial diversity and reconciliation. Recent scholarship has examined this growing awareness, but has seldom attended to issues of diversity on the campuses and seminaries that educate the leaders of these churches and denominations: campuses and seminaries which have, historically, enrolled fewer students of color than nonsectarian institutions.

George Yancey explores the methods that Protestant colleges and universities use to promote racial diversity, as well as the attitudes of the white and non-white students on their campuses. He shows that certain measures, such as diversity courses and student-led multicultural organizations, are more effective for promoting than multicultural and anti-racism programs. He also shows that the presence of faculty of color supports efforts towards racial diversity on Protestant campuses.

Neither Jew Nor Gentile not only documents which institutional measures are effective, but shows how and why they work. Yancey finds that efforts to encourage interracial communication and unity promote a positive atmosphere more effectively than measures that emphasize differences among racial groups, and that dialogue among racial groups appears to be essential for the development of a positive racial atmosphere on campus. He outlines ways of cultivating such a dialogue and offers advice to educators on handling issues of racial diversity. While Neither Jew Nor Gentile focuses on Protestant campuses, this study will benefit all educators who seek to understand and foster racial diversity on their campuses. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume reexamines the community college's functional missions in the context of both long-established and emerging societal missions. Written for college leaders, scholars, and policymakers, Community College Missions in the 21st Century addresses the most pressing questions concerning community colleges, including:

  • Is the societal mission of a community college to provide postsecondary education to students who might not otherwise obtain it, or to be responsive to the needs of local communities, including business and industry?
  • Should its dominant functional mission be to provide transfer education so that students can eventually attain a baccalaureate, or should the institution concentrate on workforce training and continuing education?
  • Given demographic shifts and pressures to be accountable and demonstrate student learning, are the traditional community college missions still relevant?

What makes discussions of community college missions so intriguing is that the answer to each of these questions is potentially yes, depending on one's perspective on the role of community colleges in America's education system. This volume examines these questions and others through various perspectives, using specific case studies and examining broader, more national perspectives.

This is the 136th volume of New Directions for Community Colleges, a quarterly journal published by Jossey-Bass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good student introduction to politics & economic reasoning.
Ideal as a suplement for undergraduate economics courses, or as a principal text for a course focused on economics and politcal/ethical reasoning.Shows the flexibility of resoning with economics, which is, for better or worse, the basic "grammar" of contemporary policy debate. Also shows that the political implications of such reasoning are not always easy to predetermine on a liberal/conservative axis. The analysis of economic efficiency, for example, does not preclude one from examining distributional consequences or questions of fairness ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Reading for the College Bound & Parents Too!
I did not want the typical college propaganda book, but wanted to find something for daughter that gave unbiased thoughts that she would READ. I found this immediately. Fortunately, I also found something that would be equally terrific for both my wife and myself for letting our only daughter and child go off to college. Harlan, many thanks for such a tremendous work and I'm happy to say that as I expected, I finished, my wife is halfway completed and I don't know how far my daughter is along, but she's reading and I'm sharing many sayings and words from the book with her regularly.

The books' terrific. Super easy to read and if chapters don't apply to you, easy to skim or pick up on the authors key points that he highlights at the end of each chapter. Thouh 108 Chapters seem like a lot, each is short and written in a easy to read fashion and always starting with a terrific story/example of the contents of the chapter.

The book is written withthe college freshman in mind, but very appropriate for the parents of the college freshman too. Frankly, my wife and I compared notes and amazing how many of the examples used in the book happened with each of us. It's the real nature of each story and chapter that makes the book terrific.I even transferred my freshman year for many reasons, but fell in love with college my last 3 years and went to graduate school and loved that too. Harlan, sound like you?

I could go on and on about what's good, but strongly recommend for those students about to go off on the big journey and want something "out of the box" and for parents who want some thoughts on what your college bound child will be facing.

Gold Star Award Winner!

I read this book the summer before I started college and it really helped me get a great insight into college life.Harlan Cohen tackles every question and worry that an incoming freshman could think of, and he gives great advice and lots of resources for more information.

Cohen tackles the tough and combats the easy in his book THE NAKED ROOMMATE. He does this with such a flair that readers feel that they can trust him and his advice. The pages full of his hilarious wit also calm the nerves of the reader, who is probably nervous about college.

This book is highly recommended to anyone either going or already in college. This book is full of ANSWERS!It really helps one feel prepared for the next journey of their life - university!

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition is Poorly Formatted.
I found this book to be helpful, albeit a bit generic. The only issue I have with it is that the quotes are randomly placed in the text, i.e. quotes from students interrupt unrelated sentences with no warning. It also doesn't have a table of contents, and it is very hard to 'skim' because you don't know where you're going to jump to (finding specific numbered tips is basically impossible, which are frequently mentioned: "turn to tip #66 for more information"). I'd recommend the physical copy, but the Kindle edition is fairly frustrating.

Product Description
* Is the conferring of baccalaureate degrees by community colleges a solution to increasing access to and capacity in higher education?
* Will the conferring of baccalaureate degrees restrict open access to, and imperil the existing mission of, community colleges?
* What are the models and alternative methods of delivery? What are the implications?

Breaking away from their traditional mission of conferring only associate degrees and occupational credentials, an increasing number of community colleges have begun seriously to explore and, indeed, in some U.S. states and Canadian provinces, to actually implement offering and conferring bachelor’s degrees.

Some leaders see these changes as a natural extension of community colleges’ commitment to access, while others view their awarding of baccalaureate degrees as inappropriate and threatening the basic core values of this unique sector of higher education.

This has become a "hot" and controversial topic, not only among community college and university leaders, but also among policy makers, business leaders and students concerned with issues of access, cost and the structure and purposes of post-secondary education.

This book analyzes the emerging trend of the community college baccalaureate degree in the United States and Canada in order to contribute to the development of policy. The authors aim to describe, document, and explain this significant development in higher education. They present the background, examples of practice and different models of delivery, develop a common terminology to facilitate discussion, give voice to the views of proponents and critics alike, and include a comprehensive bibliography and set of resources.

This book is intended as a catalyst for dialog, action and further research on this critical and emerging trend. It is essential reading for leaders of community colleges, for administrators and planners in higher education concerned with issues of access and articulation, and anyone in public policy grappling with demographic trends and society’s need for educated citizens able to meet the challenges of the future. ... Product Description

At the end of the eighteenth century, just eighteen colleges existed in the United States, with an average enrollment of fewer than seventy. One hundred years later, over 450 American colleges and universities boasted enrollments up more than one hundredfold. The role of educational institutions in the life of the nation had been utterly transformed.

As the bridge between the two eras, the nineteenth-century college has been among the most controversial subjects in the history of American higher education. While earlier historians portrayed the "old-time" college as an impediment to modernization, later scholars affirmed the broad role of the colleges in the education of the American people.

The American College in the Nineteenth Century combines the best recent scholarship with an interpretive introduction to provide a fresh view of the development of American colleges. The contributors consider these institutions within four new contexts: first, the dramatic transformation in the college students' experience from oppressive discipline to relative freedom; second, the regional variations among the developing American colleges (for example, a South dominated by state colleges, a Midwest by denominational schools); third, the revolution in the century's third quarter as colleges became multipurpose institutions; and fourth, universities that became dominant by the end of the century, incorporating rather than displacing the colleges.

Innovative in its examination of the nature and function of these uniquely American institutions, The American College in the Nineteenth Century is a vital addition to the scholarship of the period.

Product Description
The purpose of this book is to provide student affairs professionals who work at Catholic colleges and universitiesa tool for reflection and dialogue on difficult issues they face on their campuses. It is intended to be used instaff development sessions, in training sessions with student leaders and resident assistants, and in master's levelstudent affairs preparation programs at Catholic colleges and universities. This book is the next step in a series ofprojects that began in the early 1990s after the publication by the Vatican of the apostolic constitution Ex CordeEcclesiae. This book is a collection of case studies that focus on particular issues related to Catholic identity thatare faced by student affairs professionals who work at Catholic colleges and universities. By its very nature, thefocus on the difficult issues we face is a limitation. The editors in no way wish to imply that Catholic identity isonly about problems. Previous research and experience clearly indicates those who work at Catholic institutionsunderstand and embrace the opportunities that this environment provides for them. But as Schaller and Boyle(2006) indicated, there is a need for dialogue around the difficult issues that we face. The editors believe that abook of case studies is particularly helpful because it allows a staff to discuss problems at fictionalized universitiesand then ask themselves, "What would we do here?"The editors solicited cases using a mailing list provided by the Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Collegesand Universities (ASACCU); thus, the cases included in this book represent the real concerns of those practicingin the field. Some of the cases that are included are true stories of situations that actually happened, someare fictional, and some are hybrid stories based on actual events but changed to illustrate an issue. To protect theprivacy of those who were kind enough to share their difficult issues with their colleagues, the names of casecontributors are listed at the beginning of the book in alphabetical order, rather than being listed with the casesthey contributed. ... Product Description

Postsecondary teaching has a formative influence on the nature of citizenry and the health of democracy. While the ethics of medicine, business, and government receive more press attention and have been widely analyzed and debated, the ethics of higher education is also of social import: Ethical judgments must be made, for example, about fairness in evaluation, how to respond to an offensive student, and whether faculty may date former students.

Written for teachers throughout higher education, this book begins with an examination of the reasons for the scarcity of educational ethics literature, proceeds to defend a set of principles for college teaching, and concludes with practical analyses of the ethical dilemmas which face professors in the classroom today. Rights and Wrongs in the College Classroom develops an ethic that integrates concerns for student rights, social goals, and academic freedom and can help faculty to understand what values are at stake and to make better decisions when confronted with moral dilemmas. There is a need for both institutional and faculty support of such a code of ethics, whose cultivation and observance has intrinsic rewards for faculty as individuals and professionals.

Contents include:

  • Academic ethics: Sources, principles, and responses to objections
  • Teaching advocacy and indoctrination
  • Conflicts of interest
  • The ethics of classroom grading
  • Offensive speech and behavior
  • Faculty-student relationships

Product Description
An increasing number of students graduate from U.S. high schools and enter college while still in the process of learning English. This group--the "1.5 generation"--consisting of immigrants and U.S. residents born abroad as well as indigenous language minority groups, is rapidly becoming a major constituency in college writing programs. These students defy the existing categories in most college writing programs, and in the research literature. Experienced in American culture and schooling, they have characteristics and needs distinct from the international students who have been the subject of most research and literature on ESL writing. Furthermore, in studies of mainstream college composition, basic writing, and diversity, these students' status as second-language learners is usually left unaddressed or even misconstrued as underpreparation. Nevertheless, research and pedagogical writings have yet to take up the particular issues entailed in teaching composition to this student population. The intent in this volume is to bridge this gap and to initiate a dialogue on the linguistic, cultural, and ethical issues that attend teaching college writing to U.S.-educated linguistically diverse students.

This book is the first to address explicitly issues in the instruction of "1.5 generation" college writers. From urban New York City to midwestern land grant universities to the Pacific Rim, experienced educators and researchers discuss a variety of contexts, populations, programs, and perspectives. The 12 chapters in this collection, authored by prominent authorities in non-native language writing, are research based and conceptual, providing a research-based survey of who the students are, their backgrounds and needs, and how they are placed and instructed in a variety of settings. The authors frame issues, raise questions, and provide portraits of language minority students and the classrooms and programs that serve them.

Together, the pieces paint the landscape of college writing instruction for 1.5 generation students and explore the issues faced by ESL and college writing programs in providing appropriate writing instruction to second-language learners arriving from U.S. high schools.

This book serves not only to articulate an issue and set an agenda for further research and discussion, but also to suggest paths toward linguistic and cultural sensitivity in any writing classroom. It is thought-provoking reading for college administrators, writing teachers, and scholars and students of first- and second-language composition.

4-0 out of 5 stars We'll never know if Mandy marries Joe
I just saw on the Mandy website that Lois Leppard died Oct. 5, 2008.So each of us will have to decide who we think Mandy will marry.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book I guess, but no real substance, and no love between Joe and Mandie
This book was mostly a disappointment to me.Mandie was like a distant shadow, you never really got to know what she was thinking or feeling half the time.

Celia still lets Mandie have the say in everything (like where they will be during the summer vacation for instance) and doesn't seem to be having any relationships away from her.Celia should have been dating someone.

Plus, the guys who basically know nothing about Mandie, and just know she's an extremely good looking girl. Why does Mandie even bother with them?Joe is the only one who ever understood her, and he isn't even really mentioned.

Also, it was always understood that Mandie would go to college. That was a very uncommon thing back then.Girls only went to college if they weren't pretty enough to get a rich husband, and so the rich family sent them somewhere where they could learn how to support themselves.

Ugh...plus with Lois' death, now we'll never know what happened with the mystery in this book, whether Mandie and Joe end up together, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed...
I'm afraid I was slightly disappointed with this first look at a more grown-up Mandie. The mystery itself was lacking, and I never got the feeling that the mystery was really "solved". It seemed like the actual mystery was just blown off.
I really missed the heart-to-heart moments we usually see in most Mandie books. We never really get to know how Mandie really feels about her mother being pregnant again and the prospect of a new brother or sister. In earlier books Mandie was very jealous about her new baby brother but eventually overcame that. Did she ever feel that way in this book? Was she scared she might be replaced in her uncle's eyes by his own child? How was she feeling and how did she cope with it? Those questions are never answered as far as I can tell.
This book is a disappointing successer to the enjoyable first Mandie series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mandie & Marriage
Gee. Everyone is forgetting about Tommy! I want Mandie to marry Tommy! I'm rooting for him. Although I know most are probably rooting for Joe. It'll be WAY too predictable if she marries Joe.

5-0 out of 5 stars An even better Mandie
