She was born Frances (Fanny) Rose Shore in Winchester, Tennessee, but she grew up in Nashville, where her father was a partner in a department store. She had polio as child, thus affecting her right leg. She had her breakthrought as a big band singer with Leo Reisman, and later sang with Xavier Cugats orchestra. In 1940 she signed a recording contract with RCA Victor, then landed a part in Eddie Cantors radio program Time to smile. By 1943 she was starring in her own radio program, sponsored by General Foods. Shores recording of Yes my darling daughter sold a million copies, and was followed by such popular tunes as Blues in the night, Shoo fly pie and Doin what comes naturlly. Dinah shore has 9 gold records. She also has won 10 Emmys (The Oscar of TV), and that is more than any other performer. Extractions: Dinah Shore Best remembered for her sensuous recordings of Blues in the Night and the possessor of what one critic has called a silky, light-as-air voice, Shore was one of the most popular recording stars of the forties. While at Vanderbilt University, Shore sang on Nashville radio and took the name Dinah after using Dinah the song as her signature tune. In 1937 she travelled to New York and sang on radio before joining Xavier Cugat as guest vocalist. She made her recording debut with Cugat (The Breeze and I, 1940) but her big break came later that year when she became a regular on Eddie Cantors radio show. Her first hit was Yes My Darling Daughter (1940), which was an adaptation of a traditional Russian melody. The song that established Shore was Harold Arlens and Johnny Mercers film theme, Blues In the Night. That led to her appearing in several movies, including Up in Arms, in which she sang Arlens Now I Know and Ill Walk Alone and the Jerome Kern biopic Till the Clouds Roll By, in which she sang the oft-recorded Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. When her film career ended Shore returned to radio and joined Columbia. Her hits of the forties included The Gypsy, Al Jolsons Anniversary Song, the Oscar winning Buttons and Bows (1948) from the Bob Hope film, Paleface, and Sammy Fains Dear Hearts and Gentle People. In the fifties, as her hits declined with the advent of rocknroll, Shore established herself as a television star with a long-running show, in the mould of Perry Comos. In the sixties she recorded only intermittently and in the seventies became a television chat-show hostess.

Indeed from 1956 through 1963 there were few more well-known TV personalities. More than any song she sang, Dinah Shore symbolized cheery optimism and southern charm, most remembered for blowing a big kiss to viewers at the end of her 1950s variety show. As hostess, she sometimes danced and frequently participated in comedy skits, but was best loved as a smooth vocalist reminiscent of a style associated with the 1940s. Shore pioneered the prime-time color variety show when The Dinah Shore Chevy Show started in October 1956 on NBC and ran on Sunday nights until the end of the 1963 season. Sponsored by General Motors, then the largest corporation in the world, Dinah Shore helped make the low-priced Chevrolet automobile the most widely selling car up to that point in history. Shore represented a rare woman able to achieve major success hosting a TV variety show. In the late 1950s her enthusiasm and lack of pretension proved so popular that she was four times named to the list of the "most admired woman in the world". Her desire to please showed in her singing style, which some purists dismissed as sentimental, but through her recording career she did earn nine gold records. Shore made listeners and later viewers feel good, and so beginning with her first broadcasts on radio in the late 1930s and then on television, she was able to remain a constant presence in American broadcasting for more than 50 years.

Extractions: THE DINAH SHORE SHOW (VARIOUS) U.S. Music-Variety Show A popular radio and television performer for over 40 years, Dinah Shore was known for the warmth of her personality and for her sincere, unaffected stage presence. Television favored her natural, relaxed style, and like Perry Como, to whom she was often compared, Shore was one of the medium's first popular singing stars. Even though by her own admission, Dinah Shore did not have a great voice, she put it to good advantage by enunciating lyrics clearly and singing the melody without distracting ornamentation. The result was the very definition of "easy listening." By the time Dinah Shore first appeared on television, she was already very well-known as a big band singer and radio performer. In 1952, she was chosen most popular female vocalist by a Gallup poll. She was also appearing in the best night clubs, making motion pictures, and selling approximately two million phonograph records per year. Miss Shore's subsequent two decades of television work merely enhanced her already remarkable career. Dinah Shore first appeared on television in 1951 when she began a twice a week program over NBC. This fifteen minute show was broadcast on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 P.M. Jack Gould, The New York Times radio and television critic enthused about the program: "Last week on her initial appearance, she was the picture of naturalness and conducted her show with a disarming combination of authority and humility."
