   Extractions: The 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded this morning to Arvid Carlsson, Paul Greengard, and Eric Kandel for their work on neurochemistry, and learning and memory. Carlsson, Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Gothenburg, was rewarded for research showing uses and mechanisms of dopamine as a brain neurotransmitter. Greengard, Vincent Astor Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at the Rockefeller University, won for discoveries detailing the uses of second messengers and phosphorylation cascades in synaptic transmission. Greengard and Kandel are former joint winners of the Dana Award and separate winners of the Lashley Award and of the Gerard Prize of the Society for Neuroscience. The network explores how knowledge of brain development can guide us in our understanding of behavioral development and vice versa. It focuses specifically on sensitive periods and neural plasticity, the reciprocal phenomena whereby (a) the brain is negatively affected if certain experiences fail to occur within a certain time period, and (b) the brain is altered by experience at virtually any point in the life span.
