Product Description
You've no doubt heard of the mind-body connection. But Daniel J. Siegel suggests that there's another piece to the puzzle: the profound influence of those around us. On The Neurobiology of "We," the founder of the emerging field known as interpersonal neurobiology presents a new model of human potential that he calls the mindbody-relationship connection. Building on more than two decades of scientific research, Siegel offers listeners an in-depth exploration of this new map of human consciousness; insights into how interpersonal experiences shape the developing mind and foster emotional well-being; details on the untapped power this connection holds for individual and societal transformation; and more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Fascinating
I am very happy with my purchase. The author is engaging in his easy conversational tones for delivery, bringing amusing imagery to his examples. He has a knack for explaining very complicated ideas thatthe average listener can follow and understand (most of the time).Yet the details are technical enough that I believe professionals who work in fields related to human behavior can gain useful insights as well.

I have listened to the CD's once and learned quite a bit about how the brain functions, how it develops, and how critical this is to our behavior and how we interact in the world.I am glad I own the CDs as it is something I look forward to listening to again and again, gaining additional insights and a greater understanding of the subject with each listen, and sharing the CDs (and ideas) with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of a complex topic
This is a wonderful example of an integration of several diciplines of science, both new and ancient. Siegel is doing it in a coherent way. By that I mean that he is presenting the topic as an integrated theory or concept, while the theory itself has integration in its core.

5-0 out of 5 stars great foundation training!
I listened straight through all discs in the series. It is a well-organized, engaging introduction to interpersonal neurobiology.I found it helpful to re-listen to parts, especially when learning new terms or trying to picture what he was describing.Understandable, enjoyable and educational.Loved it and would recommend it to anyone wanting a general understanding of the new brain science.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating book
can be thick at times - but well worth it for the insight into the human brain

5-0 out of 5 stars Into a world of how we create who we become
For anyone who would like a wonderful experience into the workings of the social and internal mind/brain/relationship process. This is an excellent audio book by: Daniel Siegel, MD.Not only is it an excellent listen for the professional but anyone who is interested in learning the neuroscience of relationship.Sounds technical?A bit but Dan ties the pieces of science to a working - in the world of relationship model - together. His voice is captivating and I felt connected to him and the information right away.It is a must read for anyone in the professional world of Psychiatry and Psychology as well as teachers or any kind. This has no far reaching limits to who can benefit. If you want to be more effective about the impact you have on people you meet - as you heal the ways in which people affected you along the way - how these experiences actually create who we become - then this book is for you.

Product Description
Addresses the flurry of questions about the practical application of neuroscience in clinical treatment.

Recent advances in research in the fields of attachment, trauma, and the neurobiology of emotion have shown that mind, brain, and body are inextricably linked. This new research has revolutionized our understanding of the process of change in psychotherapy and in life, and raised a flurry of questions about the practical application of neuroscience in clinical treatment, particularly with those who have experienced early relational trauma and neglect. What insight does neuroscience offer to our clinical understanding of early life experiences? Can we use the plasticity of the brain to aid in therapeutic change? If so, how?

Changing Minds in Therapy explores the dynamics of brain-mind change, translating insights from these new fields of study into practical tips for therapists to use in the consulting room. Drawing from a wide range of clinical approaches and deftly integrating the scholarly with the practical, Margaret Wilkinson presents contemporary neuroscience, as well as attachment and trauma theories, in an accessible way, illuminating the many ways in which cutting edge research may inform clinical practice.

Product Description
This is a new edition of the first comprehensive text to show how the advances in molecular and cellular biology and in the basic neurosciences have brought the revolution in molecular medicine to the field of psychiatry.

The book begins with a review of basic neuroscience and methods for studying neurobiology in human patients then proceeds to discussions of all major psychiatric syndromes with respect to knowledge of their etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment.Emphasis is placed on synthesizing information across numerous levels of analysis, including molecular biology and genetics, cellular physiology, neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, and behavior, and in translating information from the basic laboratory to the clinical laboratory and finally to clinical treatment.

Editors Dennis Charney and Eric Nestle, along with their six section editors and over 150 contributors, have revised and updated all 80 chapters from the previous edition and have added new chapters on topics relating to, for example, genetics, experimental therapeutics, and late-life mood disorders. Both a textbook and a reference book, Neurobiology of Mental Illness is intended for psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and upper level students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurobiology of Mental Illness
Excellent and thorough text on the physiology of mental illness.Though written by medical authorities it is pretty accessible to this lay person.

4-0 out of 5 stars up to date reviews
This book is a kind of a collection of up-to-date reviews rather than a textbook. Indeed some chapters are hypothetical. If you are an undergraduate students, I will not recommend this book. But if you are a graduate student or a researhcer who wants to latest information, I will recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "Encyclopedia" of biological psychiatry
This is a huge book that covers every question that you may have about biological psychiatry, and even some that you haven't. As a graduate student in Neuroscience, I have found it invaluable as a theoretical reference.

The only downside is that it covers so much information, that it can be difficult to read on your own. I wish that I a class offered at my school that used this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for clinical neuroscience
This book is wonderful. It begins with a section explaining many of the basics of neuroscience, which can be used as a reference for psychologists that are not schooled in neuroscience. There are sections for each of the most highly researched psychiatric and neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's disease.I used this book as a (non-required) supplement to a neuropsychology seminar. The rest of the class relied solely on the content of the journal articles they were reviewing. With the aid of this book, I stood out as the teacher's pet.The information in this text pulls together research in the field in a way that is not done elsewhere.I noticed quite a few typos, which was surprising given that it wasn't the first edition and it cost so much. The content more than makes up for it, however, and I strongly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars invaluble for understanding the true cause of autism
no annecdotal nonsense here.Dr Bauman a Harvard neurologist who has studied the brains of those with autism for years. Her voluminous research dispels the causal myths of autism. Her evidence shows that the assault to the primitive brain affecting the limbic system and cerebellum manifesting as autism happens prenatally.

3-0 out of 5 stars A futile approach
An elusive and complex disorder is how autism is presented in this book. That's absolutely right, but I don't think this book even begins to give a clue as to the nature of autism.I think the approach has a lot to be desired:We have to assume that the nervous system evolved in order to gratify basic drives. In higher animals, basic drives are refined into emotions. So, what do the neurobiologists say?According to them, autism is a neurobiological problem, but not an emotional one! That's worse than just getting things bass-ackwards. It's being stubbornly reductionist and deliberately obtuse. ... Read more

"This volume is a very valuable and much needed contribution." –Quarterly Review of Biology

AT LAST - A comprehensive, accessible textbook on glial neurobiology!

Glial cells are the most numerous cells in the human brain but for many years have attracted little scientific attention. Neurophysiologists concentrated their research efforts instead, on neurones and neuronal networks because it was thought that they were the key elements responsible for higher brain function. Recent advances, however, indicate this isn’t exactly the case. Not only are astroglial cells the stem elements from which neurones are born, but they also control the development, functional activity and death of neuronal circuits. These ground-breaking developments have revolutionized our understanding of the human brain and the complex interrelationship of glial and neuronal networks in health and disease.

Features of this book:

  • an accessible introduction to glial neurobiology including an overview of glial cell function and its active role in neural processes, brain function and nervous system pathology
  • an exploration of all the major types of glial cells including: the astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglia of the ACNS and Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system; the book also presents a broad overview of glial receptors and ion channels
  • an investigation into the role of glial cells in various types of brain diseases including stroke, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Alexander's disease, brain oedema, multiple sclerosis and many more
  • a wealth of illustrations, including unique images from the authors' own libraries of images, describing the main features of glial cells

Written by two leading experts in the field, Glial Neurobiology provides a concise, authoritative introduction to glial physiology and pathology for undergraduate/postgraduate neuroscience, biomedical, medical, pharmacy, pharmacology, and neurology, neurosurgery and physiology students. It is also an invaluable resource for researchers in neuroscience, physiology, pharmacology and pharmaceutics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs more Diagrams
The book is very informative and fairly easy to understand with a basic background in neurobiology. It has a lot of actual photographs of equiptment/neurons and cell images. However, there are not a lot of the colorful animated diagrams you typically see in molecular biology books.I think that this makes certain concepts more difficult to understand, thus the 4 star rating. This is my only complaint with this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Neurobiology
Great purchase. Arrived in great condition and delivered well within the designated time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic principles nicely presented but depth is missing
Foundations of Neurobiology presents things reallyclearly, is easy toread and makes things easy to understand. Foundations of Neurobiology isreally excellent book for those high school students andother interestedindividuals with no background in biological sciences who would like tolearn something about neurobiology. There are some pictures whereexplanations have slipt to wrong places but this cannot be expected toconfuse readers too much, for things are stated correctly and very clearlyin text. It could be said that this book gives quite comprehensive glanceat foundations of neurobiology. However, I would not recommendateFoundations of Neurobiology for students who have taken basic biologycourses in university and who are thus at least to some extend familiarwith basic ideas about membrane proteins, migration of cells, chemotaxis, sensory systems, growth factors, membrane potential, cellular signalingetc. Or, to be more precise, I would not recommendate this book for use asan _only_ textbook but if you are reading on nice-to-know basis only or asa lead and repetition to understand other, more thorough books, this isreally the book for you. For some parts it lacks the depth that is neededin university neurobiology courses e.g. on the part of the molecular levelof axon guidance, and neuronal movement and development nervous system arepractically not discussed at all. This should of course be expected, for inthe back of the book it is stated that "Foundations of Neurobiologyallows students with only a background in general biology the chance toexplore this vibrant science." (General biology should be interpretedas "with little knowledge about basics of modern biology includingcell biology, structural biology, molecular biology andbiochemistry".)Well, it's a fine book, though I personallywould have liked more detailed information. But that's just my perversemind and thus four stars is the grade for Delcomyn's Foundations ofNeurobiology. ... Read more

Product Description
An overview of the neurobiology behindaddictions.Neuroscience is clarifying the causes of compulsive alcohol and drug use––while also shedding light on what addiction is, what it is not, and how it can best be treated––in exciting and innovative ways. Current neurobiological research complements and enhances the approaches to addiction traditionally taken in social work and psychology. However, this important research is generally not presented in a forthright, jargon-free way that clearly illustrates its relevance to addiction professionals.

In The Science of Addiction, Carlton K. Erickson presents a comprehensive overview of the roles that brain function and genetics play in addiction. He explains changes in the terminology and characterization of addiction that are emerging based upon new neurobiological findings, thus making the reader aware of the most current research. The basic tenets of neuroscience are explained as well. Erickson goes on to describe the neuroanatomy and function of brain reward sites, and the genetics of alcohol and other drug dependence. Chapters on the basic pharmacology of stimulants and depressants, alcohol, and other drugs illustrate the specific and unique ways in which the brain and the central nervous system interact with, and are affected by, each of these substances. The material in The Science of Addiction is intended to add to and strengthen the therapeutic approach to addiction.

Erickson discusses current and emerging treatments for chemical dependence, and how neuroscience helps us understand the way they work. The intent is to encourage an understanding of the body-mind connection. The busy clinical practitioner will find the chapter on how to read and interpret new research findings on the neurobiological basis of addiction useful and illuminating.

The Science of Addiction attempts to help the almost 21.6 million Americans, and millions more worldwide, who abuse or are dependent on drugs by teaching their caregivers (or them) about the latest addiction science research. The book is intended to help addiction professionals understand the foundations and applications of neuroscience, so that they will be able to better empathize with their patients and apply the science to principles of treatment. When professionals learn the proper scientific and clinical terminology, they tend to incorporate it into their everyday language and professional care environment. Thus, the value of this book is great to those who read it with a goal of learning something new.

The Science of Addiction equips counselors, social workers, psychologists, and all those working in the field with a thorough understanding of the latest neurobiological causes of addiction, thus ensuring a more knowledgeable and effective approach to overcoming the illness.

4-0 out of 5 stars good overview
This is a good book for those unfamiliar with neurobiology in general, and who are interested in understanding the current neuroscience of addiction. It puts the neuroscience findings in terms that lay people can easily understand, and covers the important bases -- the effects of drugs of abuse; vulnerability to addiction; implications for treatment; and other topics.Specialists who are knowledgeable about the literature may wince here and there when neuroscience is overly simplified or, in a few places, actually incorrect -- but those errors are in the minority and the big picture is quite in keeping with what leading researchers (at the National Institute for Drug Abuse, for example) are currently thinking about the neural mechanisms of addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
First, let me say that I am a doctor specializing in alcohol and drug studies and the author of over a hundred publications so I have a good perspective of science books, etc.In a sentence, Carl Erickson's book, The Science of Addiction is one of the best books ever published on the subject.Anyone in the field of addiction medicine (e.g., physicians, psychologists, drug/alcohol counselors) or with a personal or other professional interest in addiction will learn from this book. While a bit more advanced than Drugs The Brain and Behavior: The Pharmacology of Abuse and Dependence, by the same author, it is still very readable, fully referenced and current. Two thumbs up to Dr. Erickson.

5-0 out of 5 stars From genetics of dependence to chapters on various ways the brain processes drugs in the body
Neuroscience is clarifying how drug and alcohol addictions are processed in the body - and how it can be treated, so any college-level collection and many a public library interested in the scientific process of addition will want The Science of Addiction: From Neurobiology to Treatment. It reviews the roles brain function and genetics play in addiction, exploring changes in the terminology and definition of addiction and its treatment options in the process of explaining how neurobiological findings influence perception. From genetics of dependence to chapters on various ways the brain processes drugs in the body, any collection strong in health science needs this. ... Read more

Product Description
This widely used and highly praised textbook has been extensively revised to reflect the most exciting research across the entire range of neuroscience.A new feature is an introductory discussion of the mechanisms of gene regulation, while the superfamily of molecules responsible for membrane signaling is given new emphasis as a unifying theme throughout molecular and cellular neurobiology. The roles of these molecules in impulse conduction and synaptic transmission are fully explained, and illustrated by computer models. For the first time in a neurobiology text, these mechanisms can be explored by using a state-of-the-art interactive computer program provided with an accompanying tutorial handbook. In the sections dealing with neural systems, the comparative approach continues to be used to illustrate general principles.Students learn about the progress being made toward a molecular basis for sensory perception and new methods for revealing the neural activity underlying sensory and motor functions are described. There is an emphasis on the plasticity of both sensory and the motor circuits in mediating functions that reflect the effects of activity or recovery from injury.Central systems continue to be featured as the culmination of neural evolution. These include the systems vital for all animals, such as sleeping, feeding and reproduction, as well as the systems for language, emotion and higher cognitive functions that reach their peak in humans. There is special emphasis on recent work on memory, contrasting the mechanisms for short-term working memory and long-term memory and summarizing the present understanding of the mechanisms of long-term potential. The twin themes of organizational levels and comparative systems help bring together the vast range of studies and provides a conceptual framework that unifies the field of neurobiology. As in previous editions, the text continues to draw on the advantages of having a single author. In addition, leaders in a number of specialties have assisted the author, so that the text represents the most up-to-date views of current research on the nervous system. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE THIRD EDITION OF A LEADING INTRODUCTORY TEXTBOOK
Gordon Shepherd is a Yale University professor of neuroscience and neurobiology.

He states in the Preface to this 1994 edition, "The primary aim of this book continues to be to make this vast and expanding world of knowledge intelligible to students by presenting a unified view of the principles of nervous organization... This edition emphasizes two of the major themes in current neurobiology, the roles of synapses and of active membrane properties in shaping the input-output functions of neurons and neural networks... A second new area of emphasis is development. Increasingly the analysis of nervous organization is focusing on how it arises as development proceeds... (T)his edition attempts to 'see the brain steadily and see it whole,' with a comprehensive coverage of brain functions that includes material both for the introductory and the more advanced student."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Much the same applies to the experiments we do in biology: we can begin to believe in results only if we have an adequate grasp of the theories that seek to explain the nature of the systems we study." (Pg. 67)
"However, the enthusiasm of neuroscientists for this task must always be tempered by the reminder that identifying the neural basis for a specific behavior is one of the most difficult challenges in all biology." (Pg. 515)
"The neurobiological study of these types of emotions has been rather limited. On the one hand, most complex behaviors are simply too complex to analyze, particularly when their emotional component is not obvious." (603-604)
"When you converse with someone, you are using working memory to hold 'on line' the other person's speech in segments of several seconds to scan the words and obtain their meaning, while continuing to receive the next segment of words for subsequent scanning. Some feel that this close association of working memory and language may come the closest to defining the special basis for human intelligence." (Pg. 677)
"(I)t further appears that the right hemisphere is specialized for handling procedural information, and the left hemisphere for declarative information. No matter now one characterizes the two hemispheres it is important to realize that neither one is 'dominant' in the absolute sense; each constellation of functions is of adaptive value, and the human brain attempts to optimize both by letting the hemispheres specialize in these two directions." 5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro neuro book.
This is a great intro neuroscience book.

I bought it to help give me some background when I joined a neuroscience lab as an undergrad. I have never taken a pure neuroscience class so this book helped tremendously in building my foundation for more advanced topics.

This book is not exhaustive by any means and is heading towards the out-of-date side given of the advancements in the field to date. Probably great for an undergrad or beginning grad student.

5-0 out of 5 stars A self-contained introductory book in neurobiology.
Clearly superior to most of its competitors, this book will serve as a basic introductory text for medical students, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the biomedical sciences.

Shepherd does a wonderful job in explaining core concepts in neuroscience, ranging from the cell, to brain systems, to behavior.

Many of the chapters, especially in molecular and cellular neurobiology, will clarify certain 'dark' concepts, essential not only for neuroscience, but for physiology, pharmacology and immunology as well.

This should be one of the standard texts for every student interested in the nervous system, and in integrative science in general. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In Depth Information and Help with Interpersonal Neurobiology
I found this book to be extremely articulate and demonstrative of what I have found intuitively in my own practice as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. It further validated the helpfulness of therapeutic relationship with the client, art therapy, sand tray therapy/sand play, and other therapeutic tools that help bring about integration. Now I have the brain research, neurobiology terminology to help my clients understand what we are doing in therapy and how their brain "nets" play a role in their overall mental/emotional health. My clients are fascinated to learn about the brain and attachment and it has helped the therapeutic process along in many situations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing & overly simplistic
This book was a major disappointment, as it doesn't live up to the quality of other books in the Norton Interpersonal Neurobiology series. This book is pretty much a basic (and at times concrete) distillation of Daniel Siegal's two books. It attempts to apply Siegal's (and Allan Schore's) ideas to the pratice of psychotherapy, but does so in a overly simplistic and flowery manner. If you want an introduction to Siegal's and Schore's work then I recommend that you read instead Cozolino's books on neuroscience of psychotherapy and human relationships. They are much more solid and sophisticated in their presentation of these ideas. However, I believe the best synthesis of these topics (attachment theory, mentalization, neuroscience of psychotherpay, relational psychanalysis, mindfulness)is Wallin's "Attachment in Psychotherapy."This is truly a brilliant synthesis of these ideas and their practical application to the consulting room.I couldn't recommend Wallin's book more.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Journey
This amazing book is itself an IPNB experience. As a clinician as well as being on the receiving end of therapy, I was more than educated. I was touched both emotionally and cognitively by this work of art and science.
Ms. Badenoch takes the reader by the hand as her equal and walks her through the neuroscience with ease and grace. Her unique ability to elucidate difficult concepts makes the reader feel like an active partner, rather than a passive listener, in her personal journey through this learning experience. In essence, this book kindled my soul and on the brain level, I could actually feel the synapses firing and the forging of new neural circuits.
This book is truly for everyone; a virtual gift of hope in a world so desperately in need of compassion.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Mindful Therapist- read in bite sized frames
I found this book the least easily readable of Dan's works that I have read. There are some helpful pieces. However, I laboured to complete it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Put it to work!
I have become a big fan of Daniel Siegel's. Since reading Parenting From The Inside Out, I have read almost all of his books as I am counselor for youth and adults and do a great deal of trauma work as well. I am an EMDR therapist and find this book and his other "Mindsight" to be hugely helpful to giving the necessary resources to my clients. I received my advanced certification for EMDR recently and found many of the work to be centered around the same principles.

While this concept of "Theory of the Mind" or "Reflective function" has been around for years, Seigel does a great job of giving us practical tools to promote wellness and integration. I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Dr. Siegel's latest work, The Mindful Therapist, is an excellent, unique resource for therapists. Throughout my training as a therapist, I have read many books about the various aspects involved in the therapeutic process, however, this is the first book I have found that addresses what therapists can do, and need to do, on a personal level to be most helpful in the therapeutic process. While The Mindful Therapist seems to be written as a guide for clinicians, this information is applicable to anyone who wants to explore themselves and their relationships in greater depth. In this book, Dr. Siegel provides an incredible amount of information that allows the reader to understand the physiological and psychological processes as well as how past experiences contribute to our present relationships. In addition, his elegant, creative style allows for a flowing, engaging read.

Thank you, Dr. Siegel, for this wonderful and incredibly useful resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable teacher...
Although the title is the Mindful Therapist,a clinicians' guide, (and it is a breakthrough book for psychotherapists) this book is also valuable for anyone who is interested in deepening their understanding of how our minds work and how we affect the minds (and brains) of other people.

Dan Siegel is a remarkable teacher and this book is another in his series of books explaining interpersonal neurobiology. He is a gifted writer, often poetic in his explanations and descriptions of fundamental mental processes. He successfully addresses a multitude of crucial topics from exploring the experience of self, to what it means to be in resonance with another person or with oneself.

He introduces the reader to the latest brain science research, explores the nature of mind and neural integration in our brains and increases our depth of understanding of mindfulness and empathy. He opens up new ways of making sense of our inner world (the conscious and the unconscious) and he creates a framework to view what we may have seen and known previously but now with a new depth of knowledge hecreates an entirely new level of understanding.

In previous work he had described a valuable human capability: "mindsight".He characterized it as "a type of focused attention that allows us to see the workings of our own minds and allows us to reshape our inner experience, to increase our freedom, as well as to be fully open to another person's inner experience".In this book he goes further in showing the components and workings of this ability and how to increase our capacity to use this in our clinical work and in our lives.

He wrote this book to be read as if the reader and he were having a conversation(and it is). I had to laugh when at one point he expanded a concept explaining how the mind and brain process memory and I was just going over and over this in my mind trying to grasp the full meaning of what he was explaining.

My response at such frustration is usually to close the book and look for something to eat.His next sentence in the book was: "Yes, this appears difficult and you probably want to close the book now.... but you can comprehend this with a little more effort".And it is well worth the effort.

This is part of his gift as a teacher; to know where a student (reader) may be, and to then engage them in a way that takes them to a deeper and more complex level of understanding. He is a unique writer in this respect and was once referred to as the Mr. Wizard of our generation.(Mr. Wizard had a TV show (a million years ago) and he introduced the science of everyday life with wonder and excitement.Dan Siegel does this.

I do not mean to suggest that this is a dry scientific text.On the contrary, this is a uniquely rich, exciting, practical and readable book.Because of his writing style, this quickly becomes a rewarding and exciting conversation with Dan Siegel. It will stretch ones thinking by introducing new areas of scientific research and new ways of seeing the complexity of how our mind works and how the brain is continually evolving.

He introduces new ways of understanding"mental illness" (actually any thinking that is either rigid or chaotic). And like a great teacher, he establishes the potential roots of these problems, and in stages, expands our knowledge to fully conceptualize a new view.He then suggests how to integrate all this information into the practice of psychotherapy in order to help another person develop more fully.

This is a book that should to be close at hand.Just as having a good friend or colleague available to take a walk with and discuss and explore new ideas with, this book serves the function of opening the reader's mind to see things in a new light.

It is like a fine soup chock full of exciting and interesting flavors and thoughts. Some concepts you may think you have tasted previously but in his recipe he takes them to new levels of understanding, nuance and integration creating a synergy of flavors for a hungry mind.

Each chapter has a section that focuses directly on the more scientific information (Brain Matters) and another section with actual exercises for the reader to do (Mindsight Skills). This approach is quite useful because the concepts presented can be understood on both the intellectual cognitive level and the experiential subjective level as the book is read. In addition these exercises can be practical tools that can be used with clients.
His description and useful visual models of the dimensions of human experience are illuminating. The relationship between the mind and actual changes in neuronal structure explain why old patterns of behavior have a high probability of occurring again and again unless real neuronal change occurs.

He explains clearly and beautifully how our thoughts(often mindless preconceptions) and automatic actions (impulses) continue to effect and reinforce our own brain structure. And he reminds us how unfortunately this inevitably effects the mind and the neuronal wiring of the person we are interacting with.

Throughout the book he explains and suggests the importance of continually improving ones"mindsight" and how to creatively and intentionally develop this in oneself. He illustrates how this will have a direct effect on what can occur in psychotherapy as well as any relationship.

And Dr Siegel, neuroscientist, uses the L word without shame. In fact Dr Siegel clearly describes the importance of "love" neurologically. He separates the various types of love and shows that on a fundamental level of our neurobiology,"love " and empathyhelp develop our minds which affects neuronal growth and therefore actually shape our brains and the brains of those we interact with.

This book is valuable for therapists and to everyone who wants to maximize their own knowledge of themselves and to learn how to recognize and develop "mindsight" within themselves. Dan Siegel introduces cutting edge brain science and mindfulness practices andintegrates all this information making it understandable anduseful in the real world of being with ourselves and interacting with others.

Product Description
A leading neuroscientist offers anintriguing scientific journey to understandingthe neurobiology of the self. What can dementia, delusions, and other neurological disorders teach us about how the brain creates personal identity and a unified sense of self? Here, a leading neurobiologist offers an intriguing scientific approach to understanding the neurobiology of the self.

Drawing on both the latest neuroscientific research, as well as the author's decades of experience with neurological patients, From Axons to Identity examines the link between brain and identity in fascinating new ways. Dr. Feinberg presents case studies of individuals with brain pathologies and unusual psychiatric syndromes that cause them to deny parts of their bodies or believe in the presence of mysterious imposters or imaginary friends, and then presents a groundbreaking new theory of these conditions that relates them to the normal course of psychological development. By examining what goes wrong in individuals with these conditions, Dr. Feinberg presents an engaging new theory with far-reaching implications for the link between brain and identity. From Axons to Identity proposes a new view of the processes of the brain and the self that is unique and revelatory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clinicians Guide to the Philosophy of Mind
This book stands out in a growing field of books on new ideas about the mind in the age of neuroscience and is a terrific read for any student of psychology, psychiatry, neurology, or anyone interested in the mind body problem.

First of all, I'm delighted to see that a book like this, that tries to answer some of the deepest questions of both science and philosophy, is written by an astutely observant clinician. There are many ways to try to understand how a physical brain could be responsible for the behaviors, perceptions, and experiences that make us human. The study of normals through psychological paradigms and functional imaging contributes much to our understanding. However, as Feinberg's fascinating case descriptions illustrate, careful assessment of brain damaged individuals remains our clearest window into the neurological basis of the psyche.

Second, Feinberg introduces a general audience to the elegant concept of the nested hierarchy which helps him to create the necessary framework to make complicated ideas about the philosophy of the functioning brain readily accessible to his reader. The nested hierarchy shows how consciousness and the creation of a observing self becomes conceivable only when we understand how all the levels of our central nervous system can make their own contribution to the final product. The nested hierarchy explains how our unified, subjective experience can be a product of biological evolution and gives real substance to the modern understanding of mind developed by the philosopher John Searles. (It is worth mentioning here the exquisite organization of this book which is itself a kind of nested hierarchy weaving together clinical observation, developmental psychology- with a nod to psychoanalysis, brain anatomy, biological theory, and finally, philosophy, to build up a credible explanation of the self).

Finally, as a psychiatric educator, I can heartily recommend this book as a primer for all mental health clinicians to the neuroscience and philosophy that now form the basis of our work.

For his next book I would love for Feinberg to begin to focus on the clinical implications of his ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feinberg's remarkable book
The book By Todd Feinberg is an extraordinary book in many ways.By letting neurological patients with brain lesions speak vividly about their experience, he does not only tell us about the symptoms these patients endure but also about the nature of ourselves, our very self. Very much in the tradition of classical neurology he thereby crosses disciplinary boundaries from clinical neurology over psychology, psychoanalysis to neuroscience. But let me briefly recount what you have to expect in this outstanding book

The first chapters describe various types of brain lesions and their respective symptoms which, from the outside, may seem rather bizarre. But what Feinberg does here is much more than a simple description. He tries to understand why the patients have these particular, rather than other, symptoms. By going beyond neurology he raises the question regarding the meaning and personal relevance of these symptoms and argues that they can be considered as defense or compensatory strategies to overcome the deficits induced by the brain lesion. This puts him close to psychoanalysis as founded by Sigmund Freud and his concept of defense mechanisms as hierchically ordered and structured mechanisms of how to deal with conflict. Furthermore, in chapter 4 Feinberg discusses his concept of the self as a conscious mental unity over time in the context of Freud's concept of the ego. Though there are differences, both share the notion that the self or ego corresponds to some kind of organization and structure. This is picked up in chapter 5 where Feinberg discusses the neural mechanisms underlying such a concept of self. He argues that there is a certain hierarchy of higher and lower regions in the brain but that both are mutually dependent on each other; they represent, as he says, a "nested hierarchy". Chapters 6-8 put such concepts of self and brain into the context of philosophical problems like the mind-body problem, mental unity, and consciousness; argues that the latter, consciousness, is a process. This lets him to conclude that our self is a process; it is not what the brain is but, as he says, "what the brain does".

This is a remarkable book since it closely intertwines neurological, neuroscientific, psychodynamic and philosophical issues without reducing them to each other as it so often theses days is the case. Feinberg demonstrates his excellence within and across fields, and also shows his ability to link them. It is in these linkages between the different disciplines where he finds and "locates" the self. A marvelous book and a "Must" read for everybody who deals with the self - his own self and the selves of others - be it personally, scientifically or philosophically.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful case reviews and brisk overview of popular neuroscience.
Although not as literary than Oliver Sachs in its discussion of these unusual neuropsychiatric cases, the book benefits from an extensive, albeit cursory, survey and lively debate of more current neuroscience literature. It is a valuable effort at bridging the language and conceptual chasm between psychiatry and neurology. The books strength relies upon Dr. Feinberg's breath of clinical experience and the thoughtfulness he applies to case formulation. My criticism of the work regards it's seemingly over-ambitious attempt to resolve too many issues within too few pages. That a hierarchical arrangement in the neural architecture is critical to the work the brain does is not news, nor that prefrontal lesions lead to disinhibition.Admirably, the work attempts to popularize difficult areas of the neuroscience and psychiatric literature. More scientific formalism and less casualness would have reduced some confusion, as when the author meanders between lesioned and non-lesioned cases in his efforts to consider the neuroanatomical underpinnings for the clinical phenomena.

In the end, I have concerns with such phrenological musings, as the literature to which the author refers, draws me in the opposite direction from attempting to centralize the seat of the self to the right frontal area, but to view self as a more diffuse and distributed event. While bottom-up convergence construct increasingly complex feature representations, top-down oscillatory processes are believed to bind broad distributions of interconnected neurons, referred to as ensembles, to resonate cooperatively across the brain's entire expanse to extend our capacity for meaningful representation of the world.Any CNS injury leads to some imprecision in our sense of ourselves, our capacity to effectively represent the world through the dynamic interconnectivity of neurons, and, in turn, upon our capacity to act upon our relationship with the external world based upon these internal designs to produce desirable change. The challenge remains to conceptualize and translate psychiatric concepts, such as the defense mechanisms, into terms that relate to our current neuroscience understanding, as such integration will lead to our greater effectiveness as psychiatrist armed with a clearer sense of our self(s). ... Product Description
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, often cited as 5-HT) is one of the major excitatory neurotransmitter, and the serotonergic system is one of the best studied and understood transmitter systems. It is crucially involved in the organization of virtually all behaviours and in the regulation of emotion and mood. Alterations in the serotonergic system, induced by e.g. learning or pathological processes, underlie behavioural plasticity and changes in mood, which can finally results in abnormal behaviour and psychiatric conditions. Not surprisingly, the serotonergic system and its functional components appear to be targets for a multitude of pharmacological treatments - examples of very successful drugs targeting the serotoninergic system include Prozac and Zoloft.

The last decades of research have not only fundamentally expanded our view on serotonin but also revealed in much more detail an astonishing complexity of this system, which comprises a multitude of receptors and signalling pathways. A detailed view on its role in basal, but also complex, behaviours emerged, and, was presented in a number of single review articles. Although much is known now, the serotonergic system is still a fast growing field of research contributing to our present understanding of the brains function during normal and disturbed behaviour.

This handbook aims towards a detailed and comprehensive overview over the many facets of behavioural serotonin research. As such, it will provide the most up to date and thorough reading concerning the serotonergic systems control of behaviour and mood in animals and humans. The goal is to create a systematic overview and first hand reference that can be used by students and scholars alike in the fields of genetics, anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, behavioural neuroscience, pathology, and psychiatry. The chapters in this book will be written by leading scientists in this field. Most of them have already written excellent reviews in their field of expertise.

The book is divided in 4 sections. After an historical introduction, illustrating the growth of ideas about serotonin function in behaviour of the last forty years, section A will focus on the functional anatomy of the serotonergic system. Section B provides a review of the neurophysiology of the serotonergic system and its single components. In section C the involvement of serotonin in behavioural organization will be discussed in great detail, while section D deals with the role of serotonin in behavioural pathologies and psychiatric disorders.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Healthy Aging Brain
The Healthy Aging Brain is an excellent read.I have read several of Louis Cozolino's books and find his style of writing, his ability to personalize it for the reader, and just generally make it user friendly for professional and non-professional (Neuro-biology) readers most extraordinary. He is engaging and I recommend this book for young and old alike.Cozolino makes it profoundly clear how very important it is to stay deeply connected with one another and how important our elders and their stories handed down to our children are.And in so doing this actually stops the aging brain from loosing plasticity.Through the reconnecting of the wise mind (aging brain) and the children (developing brain) we not only live longer lives but heal and maintain a healthier social order.

I understand that errors do happen, however it is very inconvenient as I now need to order the book again, but don't want to do this until I know that I have been refunded for the last order!!
