Product Description
Nanotechnology seems to escape boundaries and definitions. The 'Rush to Nanoscale' spreads throughout different sites and arenas, involving a multiplicity of actors, meanings and spaces in which they emerge. The uncertainty of nanotechnology appears to be both a condition and a consequence of this situation. This volume adds to the collective effort of charting the multiple and heterogeneous dimensions that characterize nanotechnology, by analyzing the numerous modalities through which different stakeholders and actors provide definitions, attribute meaning and sense to nano-enabled innovations. The chapters of the book attempt to highlight how nanotechnologies, their discourse, and their actual and potential implications cannot be isolated in laboratories, factories, markets and separate discussion arenas. Also, the volume examines how it is apparently not possible to bind and/or confine the definition of nanotechnology by referring exclusively to present-day research and applications, as well as to geographical, cultural and even disciplinary boundaries. Considered together, this collection of essays suggests that the societal experiment of nanotechnology has to be explored with a vocabulary that is not just scientific and technical, in order to cross the frontiers between multiple domains, actors, identities, translations and negotiation processes that occur in the nanotechnology field.

Product Description
Biotechnology & Nanotechnology: Regulation Under Environmental, Health, and Safety Laws analyzes regulation governing biotechnology and nanotechnology industries. Regulation of biotechnology, which generally encompasses the manipulation of living materials by passing genetic information from one organism to another, emerged in the 1970's and is of major concern to the medical, pharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, and agricultural fields. Nanotechnology, which refers to the design and production of molecular-sized devices and products, is a more recent field whose regulation has an impact on the same industries as biotechnology and also affects semiconductors, communications technology, cosmetics, and consumer products. Additional regulation is quite likely because the need for knowledge of the risks involved in industry processes and products is increasing. Both fields are subject to the same regulatory schemes, and this book describes the application of substantive laws, such as the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act, to each segment of the biotechnology nanotechnology industry. Also discussed are international issues and ongoing development of regulations governing these fields. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Introduction to Microelectronics So Far
I bought this book for my parents so that they can finally understand what I did for my PhD, as this is definitely the best book so far that talks to people outside the microelectronic community with sufficient breadth and depth of this industry. For those college students who need to understand what microelectronics is about and how integrated circuits have changed our lives, this is definitely the book to go to.

As it turns out, I have decided to keep a copy on my bookshelf, too, after reading the book. I enjoyed the author's unique insight into the semiconductor industry. The book is useful for graduate students and professionals in this field as well. It covers topics ranging from semiconductor physics, fabrication, to their actual application in modern products and emerging ethical issues in a casual but informative manner. Very well-organized. We have heard of most of the topics, but prabably have never thought deeply enough. In addition, there are tips that are beneficial to our career lives, e.g. a discussion on patenting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book on TiO2 nanotubes
This book is a comprehensive story of the modern field of oxide nanotubes, a field of the first author's specialization for the last nine years. Attention is given to all major aspects of nanotubes preparation, physics and chemistry and applications. The composition of the book generally follows the structure of a research paper: it starts with an introduction giving an interesting historical background of using nanomaterials, gives overview of the structures of nanomaterials like nanosheets, nanospheres, nanotubes and nanorods. Synthetic methods for various nanotubesand nanorods of metal oxides and metal halcogenides (Bi2Se3, MoS8, MoS2, TiS2) are given at a good detail level to allow reproduction.
The second chapter deals with strategies of producing nanotubes containing TiOx. The first strategy is to use templates. The preparation method can employ top-down approach (removing material) and bottom-up approach (adding material). The second strategy is called alkaline hydrothermal synthesis from TiO2 and is presumably based on nanosheets formation and their folding into nanotubes. The third strategy is electrochemical oxidation of Ti. It produces regularly oriented nanotubes attached to the electrode. However, a satisfactory explanation of the reason for formation of hexagonal packing of nanotubes is missing (which can be in connection with non-equilibrium thermodynamics of processes at the boundary during anodic oxidation and dissolution).
The third chapter is about the results of structural and physical characterization of nanotubes. It turned out that Ti containing nanotubes and nanorods can be composed of a variety of crystallographic phases, and amorphous materials with different composition. Anatase, monoclinic H2Ti3O7, H2Ti4O9 H2O, orthorhombic H2Ti2O4(OH)2, lepidocrocite-type H0.7Ti1.827VAC0.175, O4 H2O), monoclinic TiO2-B are reported in the literature. It can be concluded that the exact structure is still under investigation. Further parts of the chapter shortly concern the porous, electronic, surface acid-base properties, valence states, conductivity, and light absorption in nanotubes. Giving such a big variety of nanotubes compositions it becomes obvious that a great variability in properties can be expected.
The fourth chapter presents an overview of surface chemistry of Ti nanotubes. Mostly hydroxyl group chemistry is described including ion exchange and functionalization. An interesting part of the chapter is on structural transformations of nanofibres and nanotubes. A variety of shapes with different sizes can be obtained by applying thermal and acid-base treatments. The scheme of transformations can be expanded further by adding mutual transformations of nanorods/nanofibres/nanosheets. This underlines the fast growing character of this research area.
The fifth chapter, most intriguing, describes applications of titania and titanate nanotubes. These materials have advantages - high aspect ratio, good adsorption properties for positively charged molecules, anisotropic electrical conductivity and diffusivity, etc. - that enable their beneficial utilization as support for dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells, as electrode coating in lithium batteries, as hydrogen storage and sensing means, in supercapacitors, in catalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis. Good consideration is given to applications of nanotubes for water splitting and oxidation of various compounds under light. Doping is reported to produce visible-light active nanotube photocatalysts. However, literature demonstrations of this visible activity very often rely on dyes as substrates for oxidation or sacrificial electron donor for hydrogen production.
The book appears to be very helpful in gaining knowledge on TiO2 nanotubes for scientists, students and professionals working in the fields of nanomaterials and their applications.

Product Description
Dynamics of billiard balls and their role in physics have received wide attention.Billiards can nowadays be created as quantum dots in the microscopic world enabling one to envisage the so-called quantum chaos, (i.e.: quantum manifestation of chaos of billiard balls). In fact, owing to recent progress in advanced technology, nanoscale quantum dots, such as chaotic stadium and antidot lattices analogous to the Sinai Billiard, can be fabricated at the interface of semiconductor heterojunctions. This book begins ite exploration of the effect of chaotic electron dynamics on ballistic quantum transport in quantum dots with a puzzling experiment on resistance fluctuations for stadium and circle dots.Throughout the text, major attention is paid to the semiclassical theory which makes it possible to interpret quantum phenomena in the language of the classical world.Chapters one to four are concerned with the elementary statistical methods (curvature, Lyapunov exponent, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and escape rate), which are needed for a semiclassical description of transport in quantum dots.Chapters five to ten discuss the topical subjects in the field, including the ballistic weak localization, Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillation, partial time-reversal symmetry, persistent current, Arnold diffusion and Coulomb blockade. ... Product Description

Although nanotechnology applied to medicine has a potentially huge impact on drug delivery and tissue engineering, significant challenges need to be resolved before clinically viable nanomedicine or nanobiomedicine therapies will be available. Skillfully edited, with contributions from an expert panel of researchers, Nanotechnology in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine discusses the use of nanotechnology for medical applications with a focus on its use for drug delivery and tissue engineering. It sheds light on the challenges facing the field and examines cutting-edge research that may provide solutions.

Topics covered include:

  • Patterning of biomimetic substrates with AFM lithography, primarily focusing on DPN Nanotemplating polymer melts
  • Nanotechnology-based approaches in the treatment of injuries to tendons and ligaments
  • Progress in the use of electrospinning processing techniques for fabricating nanofiber scaffolds for neural applications
  • Nanotopography techniques for tissue-engineered scaffolds and the effects of nanotopography on cells and tissues
  • Vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube surface structuring for optimization of Ti implants utilizing nanotechnology
  • Applications originating from the harmony of nanotechnology to biological systems, especially for the regeneration in the nervous system
  • Current understanding of the mechanisms by which cells sense nano-scale structure at the molecular level and how this understanding can be useful in developing novel antifouling materials

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for professionals in the field
Nanotechnology in Biology and Medicine: Methods, Devices, and Applications is an in-depth assembly of essays concerning the practice of nanotechnology in life sciences. Individual writings include "Nanopore Methods for DNA Detection and Sequencing", "Engineering Gene Circuits: Foundations and Applications", "Nanotechnologies in Adult Stem Cell Research", and much more. "Considerable effort has been made to develop biocompatible scaffolds for tissue engineering. The principle for the design of tissue-engineering scaffolds remains clear: the scaffold should mimic the structure and biological function of the native extracellular matrix (ECM) as much as possible, both in chemical composition and physical structure." Black-and-white diagrams and photographs enhance this highly detailed resource recommended for professionals in the field - the better to stay abreast of the latest developments! - as well as for students and educators.

4-0 out of 5 stars promising potential
The book has chapters drawn from recent work in its field. But much still remains speculative. The experimental efforts thus far achieved are primitive though promising. Quantum dots can be made. And so too for other nanostructures, like cantilevers.

The chapters suggest paths that these results can take, for such uses as microscopic biosensors. All of which is worthy. But the discerning reader should note that it is still a long ways to go. Given the long approval times needed for inserting such devices into humans, it may be that non-medical nanotech applications will be more quickly deployed. ... Read more
