$400 billion or 16% of the total retail sales are directly influenced by Web.Consumers today are very savvy. They do the research, compare prices online and may not go to the stores to purchase.

Web 2.0, 3.0, E-marketplace, E-tailing, online consumer behavior, online market research, B2B, E-supply chain, corporate portals, E-government, E-learning, social network, mobile commerce, E-security, E-payment, were covered in depth. Definitions and examples are good.

The drawback of this book, is too much theory. There are few real-life cases.

I have troubleshooted all sorts of electronic gadgets and have been doing it for 3 years and I have come to learn that you can not learn real world troubleshooting from a book. It is not possible.

Use it as a paper weight.
As a scientist who went thru the rigors of getting a PhD in an American public university, I have noticed many subtle but inefficient practices.One of the worst goes as follows.A certain promising doctoral student starts on his (or her) research.His advisor hands him a classic text to read.Said text is nigh incomprehensible, but our prodigal student endeavors and comes to gradually understand the text and apply it to his studies.He graduates, begins his career and eventually gets that tenured position.Years later when he supervises his first graduate student, he imparts said text upon a new sufferer and the process begins anew.This book by W. A. Harrison is such a text.It is extremely hard to read, the words are small, there are few images or graphs or plots, and the examples are not geared for the computer age.But, because this book came out when solid state simulations began to spread in use and multiple free codes came about, it was read and used by many scientists and apprentices.Nowadays, there are dozens of much better books that are much easier to read and understand.Yet I still encounter this text being used.Why?Because many academics fought thru it, are proud of the feat, and somehow intend their trainees to do the same.

I read this book after reading thru over a dozen other books in the same subject, and found this to be the hardest and least understandable.This book is often considered the Bible of electronic structure simulations.This is a correct statement in the worst sense possible because the number of people who understand the Bible is much less than those who swear by it; i.e. very similar to this book.Overall, I do not recommend buying it or reading it.Its only redeeming quality is the exhaustive number of equations.

Without parallel in Materials Science literature
This book has no parallel in the literature of theoretical materials science. The information contained in the book allows first principle calculations of properties of important technological materials like perovskite oxides, semiconductors, etc. I would suggest the reader to consult the papers by R. Haydock and others in Solid State Physics, vol.35 of 1980 to
complemment the methods presented in the book.

Essential book for condensed matter physicists
If you are studying the solid state physics, it is a necessary book for you. It covers various properties of almost all kinds of solid state materials and shows pretty new experimental data from reliable sources.This book also starts with a clear introduction in each chapter so thateven for a beginner, it is easy to read. No Longer in Business
I gave the book one star because if he was so successful why did he and his company go out of business in 2002? The book gives you some good technical information on stock trading, but as a guide to making money in Day Trading begs the question "Why is the author selling a book that advises the reader to follow up at his website for further training and services, when his company and website no longer exist?"

I wish I had known that this guy is no longer in business and why he is no longer in business?

Another book with old strategies, however....
There are some good ideas that you can rescue from this book. Therefore I think you should buy it since you can make much more money and certainly recoup your small investment if you employ 2 o 3 good tips.

Any way, from my point of view a trader must always read as much as he can. There is simply no other way to prepare one self for this difficult yet incredibly rewarding activity, but to learn and put into practice as much ideas as you can, at least by paper trading first.

The are a lot of books on the subject, however many of them where written 2 o 4 years ago and that kind of makes them obsolete in this constantly changing field.

The internet offers great places where you can learn more specialized trading techniques. One of those places that I have found to be worthy is ProfitableStockmarket dotcom.

They focus mainly on momentum trading and employ a rather simple yet effective strategy. I think that for a trader to survive and be profitable, its neccessary to keep their trading as simple as possible. To much confussion and technical indicators will most of the time make you slow in your decisions and froze you up when a good opportunity is right in front of you.

In the end it's all about buying or selling with out hesitation, and doing it over an over again according to your set ups.

What became of Broadway Trading, LLC??
They went bankrupt, which is where you would be if you followed West and Friedfertig's methods. The book was a copy of Jack Schwager's Market Wizards series, due to the interviews conducted with "traders". You would be amazed if you saw some of these people and didnt read their words in print. Somehow they would not come off so sharp. Trust me!

Also do you think our authors would be able to spot "managerial talent" over a few aspiring proprietory traders? No they hire guys who have previously filed bankruptcy in their past and pipe up their accomplishments, which are a joke when you realized they bailed on creditors!!

Save yourself a dime and avoid it-if someone gives it to you, and you can't return it, use to start the BBQ grill. I could go on and on about SEC/NASD violation, getting short on a downtick, etc but I wont!

Obsolete
This book completely fails to realistically convey the relative risks and profit potential for the average wannabe day trader.Im talking about someone with less than a few thousand to play the market.Unless you have big bucks and Level II quotes forget day trading unless you are very lucky. In the trading parlance, I wish I had a short position on this book at its current price, and could cover my short at the current used price! Save your money.

Not worth the time (or money)
It is unclear who this book is written for. Industry professionals are likely to already know all the information in the book (and are unlikely to care about much of it).Non-professionals seeking to gain an understanding of how today's electronic exchanges work will come away having learned very little because the authors don't bother to explain the basics of trading and the trading mindset (or explain how that mindset has been altered by the switch to electronic trading).

And though the authors can perhaps be forgiven for their poor writing (neither is a professional writer), the editing is downright sloppy (especially for a book that costs close to $50).

Finally, it would have been helpful if the title made clear that the book is much more focused on futures and derivatives markets than on equities.

A dynamic book
I had the pleasure of reading the draft of this book. This book is a well researched, filled with institutional details, statistics, and anecdotes.The authors actually partook the electronic revolution of the trading business, and are able to analyze the transition from "pits to bits"from different angles.They also offer insights about the future of the stock and derivative exchanges.The authors are great story tellers and the book is fun to read. Highly recommended for traders, regulators, and also researchers who are interested in market microstructure, financial market regulation and industrial organization and dynamics.

Cool book
Pits to Bits gives a very thorough and clear picture of the exchange world over the past 100+ years and today.This is a dynamic and passionate world.The book gets a bit long-winded at times, but all in all, the book is both educational and enjoyable.Kudos to authors Gorham and Singh.

Valuable supplementary resource
As I understand it, Rorabaugh wrote this book as a supplementary resource for robotics hobbyists, rather than as a primary tool meant to stand on its own.It is valuable within this context.If you have a background in basic electronics and robotics, or are reading this book concurrently with others in these areas, Rorabaugh's book will make sense and add to your understanding.Yes, it is true that I have seen clearer discussions of vector math in other books.The examples on pages 25 and 89 are not very clear.Rorabaugh uses terms like 'annulus' (p. 108) without explaining them ('annulus' refers to any ring or ringlike mark), and on p. 109, he refers to planetary gear trains, which are not described and explained until p. 118.All this being said, for those interested in topics such as levers, gears, wheels and pulleys, encoders, solenoids, springs, and linkages, Rorabaugh will provide you with the introductory theory, formulas, and design ideas you are seeking.I thought the section on pneumatics was good, and I found materials in that section that I have not seen duplicated elsewhere.There are plenty of drawings, and the explanations are concise.You can spend your time hunting through various engineering texts and scattered Web sites and numerous other places for the same material, or you can get a concise introduction to these topics in this one book, and use it as the basis for learning more.I opted for the book, and I am pleased with my decision.

Great Intro. to Mechanical Design
The book is a great intro to basic mechanical design needed to make simple devices with DC motors, gears, pullies, and pneumatic pistons. The author covers the theory in an easy to understand fashion in a very practical way. I use it in my freshmen level design class, where students build simple robots.

I opened the first page and it came off in my hands.You would need a doctrate degree in Nuclear Physics to understand but only just barely.How long did it take you to build up this pile of meaningless pages? 5 minutes?Next time you think about putting pen to paper, heres a small piece ofadvice, don't.

Circuits & Devices (textbook)
This book begins with the basics of electronics and discusses the physics and math of circuits beginning with Ohm's law and goes on to cover the whole scope of electronics.May be an out of date textbook but a very useful reference for anyone in electronics.

The best I've ever seen
This textbook is far and away the best I've ever seen on the subject.I wholeheartedly agree with the previous review, and would like to add a few comments of my own.This book, as a stand-alone text, is outstanding.If you combine this book, the lab project manual(sold separately-around $70), and invest around $50 in a Multisim software program(10.1 is the newest version right now), you've just given yourself the basis of an electronics education that will serve you well for the rest of your life.Multisim is basically a circuit prototyping and analysis software package.It has a 3-d breadboard where you can hook up circuits(with around 16,000 different components to choose from) and see how/if they work, analyze and troubleshoot them, etc.Pretty much anything you could do on a breadboard, you can do on Multisim.This book comes with a disk that gives you ready made circuits to open with Multisim to experiment on, and it walks you through doing so.It's unbelievable.The lab manual gives you a ton of actual circuit building experiments to do on an real breadboard...again walking you through.The book itself starts assuming no previous knowledge of electronics, and takes you up through transistors, oscillators, op amps, etc.It has a plethora of examples that are worked out step by step, with practice problems coming every couple of pages, and then chapter review problem at the end of every chapter...all with the answers at the back of the book so that you can check your progress.I've never taken the time to review ANYTHING my whole life, but this book has been such a blessing for me, I just had to.I'm teaching myself electronics, in preparation of starting an Electronics Engineering program at Devry this spring.I just wish I would've bought this book earlier, instead of some others I bought.HIGHLY recommended!

The Illustrated Dictionary of Electronics
This book is fantastic and a must if you are studying FCC Grol. The only draw back is that Amazon.com sent my order 3 times, and each time it did not have the CD that I paid for, and their customer service was no help at all. I still have not received my CD but they sure got their money from me. I had to contact the publisher directly to get a CD.

So once again great book, but sorry ass caompany to buy it from.

A really sloppy update
The latest additions (since Volume 4) are not as well-written or comprehensible as early ones, and the new diagrams were obviously done by someone who didn't have the foggiest idea what he was drawing. Many of them are unclear, and a surprising number are downright incorrect, which undermines confidence in all of them. This book sorely needed a good editor.

This is the best electronics dictionary I've ever run across.All of the definitions are clear and concise.There are many cross-references to other similar topics.Students and technicians will find this dictionaryespecially suited to their needs.

Concise and complete.I use it almost every day.
This book is the most straightforward and comprehensive electronics dictionary I have found.The illustrations are simple, and are easy to interpret.I think some terms have illustrations when they aren't needed. I really appreciate the fact that the mathematics is not too complicated.

Easy Content and fast shipping
If you are looking for a very fundamentals circuit book for self-study, this is a good one. It is a good college book. I was looking for a more advanced circuit book, so this one is too easy.

received the product quickly and was really happy about that, really needed thia book and was having trouble with finding it , but the quality of the book was awful, it statedthat it was in good condition but it looked like it was a 20 year old book, it was in a very poor condition and its covers are barely attached i have ordered electronic items as well as cd's, probably will never order books without being able to see them.

Excellent Textbook for Intro Electronics
After a long search, I used this textbook twice to teach a 1-semester Analog Electronics course at the soph/jr level.I liked this text becasue it is VERY clear for students who find it very readable and organized in a logical sequence.If they miss a lecture, no problem, the book covers the material fantastically.It also has great pedagogical features which help students maintain a high-level view of electronics while learning details.And it combines typical electronics with practical information, applications, and debugging strategies.

Unfortunately, this book uses electron flow for current rather than conventional current flow.While this makes some sense, it also leads to lots of confusion when using any outside materials for the class.Secondly, it spends a lot of time on fairly simple stuff which the students should have already learned in Intro Physics so we did not really get into new subjects until around page 300!

That being said, I strongly recommend using this book to learn electronics on your own or as a text for students who may not have had Physics before.

You can learn the basic principles of electronics in class or on your own with this terrific text
What a terrific introduction to electronics!The author explains electricity, the relevant formulae, the basic physics of electricity, electromagnetism and a lot more.The text requires no more than algebra and right angle trigonometry.I find the text clear, engaging, and quite understandable even without an instructor to help me.

A good read.
So far I'm ten chapters through the book and it is very straightforward and helpful. It makes learning Electrical Engineering through self study a lot easier. This is also used in the latest engineering classes at my school.Some of the questions need to be clarified for what exactly the author is asking for but I was eventually able to figure things out.It's a very helpful tool for the student engineer.

Amazing Book! Very Instructive!
I'm a bit busy, so I will be short on the reviews, like I show on the rating stars "I Love It", the book is very easy to read and understand!

Excellent Resource for All Types of Audio Circuits
This is an excellent resource for somewhat-experienced electronics hobbyists to make high-quality audio projects of all kinds. It's very readable, and all the required resources (such as schematics, PC board artwork, and basic explanations) are provided for all the projects.

Before going any further, I should clarify who this book is for. The reader will need good knowledge of intermediate circuit analysis (mesh-current analysis, node-voltage analysis, etc in large circuits), extensive knowledge of transistors and op-amps, extensive knowledge of capacitive circuits, some knowledge of inductors, a good grasp of the concepts of input and output impedance of circuits, and knowledge of circuit feedback (only if you plan on building an amplifier). Also, plenty of hands-on experience with circuit construction would really help. If you're unsure of your skill in any of those areas, I suggest not reading this book until you learn them because many things will go right over your head otherwise. If you're taking electrical engineering at university you'll probably be fine if you're in 3rd year, but I'd recommend waiting until 4th year so that you get a better grasp of everything. Note, however, that this book doesn't get into complicated math, the frequency domain, Laplace transforms, imaginary numbers, or any other complicated subjects like that, so don't worry if you're rusty in those areas.

Now on with the book. It starts out with a chapter discussing audio topics in general, such as how humans hear sound and the goals of a high-quality sound system, then discusses topics such as distortion, noise, frequency response, slew rate, and phase issues.

Chapter two is about balanced vs single ended audio signals, baluns, and volume control circuits (including digitally-controlled ones).

Chapter three is about preamplifiers. Several example schematics are provided, and circuits for RIAA equalization, loudness control, and audio balance are provided. Methods for power supply decoupling are also presented in this chapter.

The fourth chapter is about audio filters, and includes circuits for tone controls, active low-pass filters, equalizers (with one circuit having 24 bands), parametric equalizers, and phase-linear filters. This chapter also has a section with advice on what types of resistors and capacitors to use.

Chapter five is about headphone amplifiers. This chapter is very short and only includes two headphone amp circuits with minimal explanation. But, they are good amplifiers, and very little description is given because the next chapter is dedicated to amps.

The sixth chapter covers audio amplifiers. First I should note that I didn't fully read this chapter because I didn't know enough about transistors and circuit feedback at the time to be able to understand it well enough, so I don't know all the details about this chapter. However, upon skimming through it I found that there are several schematics for amplifiers ranging from about 10 watts up to 300. The explanations seem pretty good, but considering how complicated amplifier circuits can be I'm guessing that this chapter alone will not give the reader a very detailed knowledge of amplifiers. Rather, as Slone mentioned somewhere in the chapter, this chapter is only meant to give a brief description of amplifiers. For a better analysis, a dedicated book like Slone's "High-Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual" should be read.

Chapter seven covers power supplies. The three main types of DC power supplies are discussed (linear regulated, switch-mode, and unregulated), as well as several topics surrounding power supplies, such as how big the power supply has to be for an amp of a given power level, methods of rectification, fusing, and capacitors. The chapter is split into two sections, one for amplifier power supplies and one for signal-processing circuit power supplies (aka, low power circuits), and schematics for several different power supplies are presented. Methods for making general-purpose bench-top power supplies are also discussed.

Chapter eight covers protection circuits, such as DC and transient speaker protection, soft-start, and clip-detection.

Chapter nine includes various miscellaneous audio circuits, such as display circuits (for example, an LED-based power level display), phase control circuits (mainly for subwoofer amplifiers), and delay circuits.

In chapter ten, Slone gives some very useful information for constructing circuits. The chapter starts with methods of dealing with hum and noise and how to ground everything properly. Slone then presents an excellent introduction to PC board fabrication, both by hand and by using software to print the circuit (which anyone with a printer can do). The next section is on heatsinks and how to choose one of a proper size, and the chapter finishes with a short discussion of project enclosures.

The book ends with a few appendices. Appendix A is a comprehensive glossary of pretty much every term used in the book; appendix B is an extremely useful list of suppliers for electronics parts, audio equipment, project enclosures, and pretty much anything you'll need for a DIY project; and appendix C is a compilation of the PC board artwork that didn't fit well in the other parts of the text.

The above lists pretty much every subject, circuit, and project in the book, except for a few minor ones that I may have missed. With the knowledge and circuits presented in this book, anybody with enough skill and previous knowledge should be able to build an entire high-powered, hi-fi audio system from scratch. I've only had the chance to build a few of the smaller projects presented in this book, but they worked quite well.

A fairly common complaint about this book is that some of the components that are used in the projects are hard to find (particularly because Seal Electronics, the author's company and the source of kits for many of these projects, has gone out of business). Although I haven't checked every project specifically, I do know that most of the time when searching for a semiconductor, where there's a will there's a way. If you can't find a specific transistor, op-amp, etc then there are many resources on the internet for finding an equivalent component. Even if you can't get an exact match, you can almost always come very close.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how audio systems work, particularly if you want to build your own systems. BUT, only buy this book if you are knowledgeable enough with all the concepts I listed in the second paragraph of this review.

First-rate resource for the budding DIY audio enthusiast
Slone covers a wide range of audio projects in this book: amplifiers, preamplifiers, filters, and protection circuits.The reader is assumed to understand basic electronics terminology, but everything else is explained point by point.An easy-to-read format supplies just enough theory for understanding the circuit, then goes right to the practical application.Slone even provides 1:1 scale artwork of numerous designs for those who want to etch their own circuit boards.For those wanting to go deeper into amplifier theory than what is presented here, this book is an execllent companion for Slone's in-depth treatment of the subject, the High-Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual.

Meh-
I've seen better high end audio books. I'm certainly not a member of the aforementioned "Scientific School of Audio System Performance Analysis", the only instruments that can accurately measure sound quality are the ones on either side of your head. I listen to what my ears tell me sounds good, and generally, tubes sound good. Which is why this book is sort of a disappointment, you'd think that out of 80 projects there'd be at least one tube phono preamp, but unfortunately there are no tube amps, just a few rants about how tubes don't produce enough power. Who uses more than a watt anyway? Even the transistor amps presented aren't much better than what you could get from Rex or Circuit City, similar schematics could probably be found on the internet for free. Go ahead and buy it if that's the sort of thing you're into, but if its tubes you want, try Morgan Jones' "Building Valve Amplifiers", it doesn't have many schematics but it coversin great detail the layout and contruction of tube amps. Think it's a great book!
My husband thinks it's an excellent book for learning the basic fundamentals of how electronics work and how to fix them. It's a great asset for a beginner amateur electronic technician. He reads it all the time and it has been helping him fix some of his electronics such as DVD players. He loves the book! It covers alot of the much needed basic/starting information he hasn't been able to find in his other books. Highly recommend it for someone who is just starting to learn about fixing electronics. It covers the "what is", the "how to's" and the tools that are needed for testing and fixing.

Must reading for the electronic novice!
This is perfect reading for the electronic novice who desires to understand how to go about the difficult subject of troubleshooting circuitry. It's well written and easy to understand and has plenty of graphics for visual viewing.

Is not the best source of information
If you are looking for a book that will show examples and techniques of how to fix electronic devices this is not the best option. It does have some basic information about testing basic components but other than is useless.This book falls short in teaching the fundamental techniques for troubleshooting.

Out in the blue
The title says a little about what's really in the book.
Just another book describing elemenatry electronics rather than troubleshooting it. A lot of jibberish around the real task "troubleshooting", then some quick views of informative how to find the faults (some to quick to follow at my experience level). The real troubleshooting pages could easily fit in a small 50 page notebook or less. When it comes to the real relevant stuff, then it is quickly done and the real juicy bits are left out. I'm new into electronics and must say that I expect more from a book with such a tile. I must say that I really don't know how on earth this book is aimed for. Not a beginner nor a pro.
Best thing about the book is that it's hardcover. Else a lot more should be expected from a book like this, according to its title. Save your money and get another one (or by mine cheap). ... Read more

Good mathematical E&M book
I used this book for a couple of my graduate level E&M classes.This book seems to be a good foundation for learning the theoretical in's and out's of E&M.That being said, it is great for graduate students and professors but not so great for real engineers.

Now that I am a Systems (RF) Engineer, I have not found this book all that useful as a reference, simply because I have to go through tons of math just to get the answer I need.It is definitely not a "quick reference" book for the practicing engineer, but rather a in depth mathematical look into E&M theory.

very good explanation on many chapters
I bought this book 13 years ago to read something about smith transmission-line chart. I think authors described very clear, especially, some figures that use to illustrate example very clear compared to other books with the same topic which is difficult to see something.

This is a graduate level book
Being a doctoral student in electrical engineering and having a B.S. in physics, I would say this is definitly a graduate level text.The reader must have a strong background in math, being able use formulas such as Legendre polynomials and vector cal with full understanding.It helps to have been exposed to this material.If you are looking for a book with more broken down explainations and examples, I would suggest Intro to Electrodynamics by David Griffiths.

Poorly Written and almost no examples...
I'm no genius in RF Engineering but I have come across a lot of good Microwave Engineering books and this is NOT one of them. More to the point, I work entirely with other RF engineers and every person I showed this book to shuddered and began spouting off profanities at it.

Although the book does start out simply enough, the chapters tend to give only a brief overview of the material. The real trouble starts when you try to work the problems at the end of each chapter. With no solid examples or clear explanations of how to proceed, I found myself referring to my other RF textbooks for support.

I have no doubt that if you are borderline Genius, this book will make perfect sense to you. ...But for us less than genius personality types, keep looking, your book is still out there.

Best EMag book I've come across that's still in print
I refer to and review this book often.It has been updated and has the essential topics such as transmission lines, which is well covered.It also has interesting things like holography and optical image processing in the back, and is rather self contained.Like all great textbooks, you have to read it carefully and work out problems to build understanding.Ramo was the R in TRW as my former emag professor would say...For people who criticize this book, have you read the competition (Cheng)?For a slightly easier approach try Magid's "Electromagnetic Fields, Energy, and Waves".I think Jordan's "Emag Waves and Radiating Systems" is excellent w/regards to HF antennas and maxwell's equations, but it is very old. ... An up to date overview of modern electronic technology
I'd say this book is definitely not for the seasoned professional. But it's a great book for someone who has at least some background in the electronics field, and who is looking for an overview of modern day electronic technology. For instance, I took my core electronic courses forty-years ago, and with that background I made it through the book without too much trouble. The electronics we now take for granted wasn't even dreamed of in those days. So to me, this book was filled with fascinating material, including a good explanation of how all these newfangled electronic gadgets like the cell phone actually work.

Cited as the systems approach to learning about electronics, the author approaches each of his topics as a complete unit, rather than an explanation of the individual electronic components and how they operate. So after a brief introduction to simple circuit components like capacitors, resistors, transformers and a little about Ohms Law, the author takes the reader on a fascinating trip through everything from integrated digital logic circuits, and OpAmps, and power supplies, and computers, to cell phones, antennas, and satellites, to wireless networks, LANS and WANS, audio and video and industrial control technology, as well as a bunch of stuff I haven't mentioned. That's a lot of technical information in just 300 hundred pages, so it moves fast and it got a little overwhelming for me in a few places. But I finished the book and I feel that I learned a lot, which was my goal in reading the book in the first place. I recommend this book for anyone interested in an overview of up-to-date modern electronic technology and its applications.

The Dark Side of the Internet
Lee Siegel is a cultural critic, having reviewed books for The Nation, art for Slate.com and televison for The New Republic, in addition to writing essays and articles for Harpers and the Los Angeles Times Book Review. Against the Machine is not quite a complete book, but feels more like a collection of essays collected under the unifying theme that the Internet is changing culture, and not for the best. He likens the use of popularity for YouTube videos, "friends" on MySpace or Facebook bringing people back to seeking approval from the in-crowd at your high school. The anonymity offered by the Internet, according to Siegel, far from freeing people to express themselves freely, offers a platform for online mobs to harass, attack and insult those views people disagree with, with little to no cost. There is a bit of irony in this particular complaint of Siegel's. In 2006 while blogging at The New Republic, Siegel used an anonymous account to also attack anonymous commenters on his blog and to defend and promote himself.

Siegel makes a good point that many of the changes taking place on the Internet have a dark side. That the ability to express yourself on YouTube leads to doing stupider, more dangerous or embarrassing, in order to increase views, that blogging leads to more extreme rhetoric and that the increase of online "friends" only reduces the time one can spend with real-world friends. His argument (or lamentation) of the rise of the average person doing reviews and commentary that was once the bastion of editorial professionals, comes across as self serving and ignores the role of the Internet as a semi-professional training ground. Or those people that will be reviewing this, and his future books on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and hundreds of blogs across the Internet, all helping sell more copies (including this one.)

Garbage, burning
Man, I had high hopes for this book.Very high.Siegel had a great piece in the NY Times a few weeks ago, so I ordered Against the Machine thinking I'd get more of his shrewd analysis of large scale shifts in our culture (see Vico reference in article), and reconciling technology and the internet against them.Against the Machine is exactly the opposite.It is inert.Yes, it is a spirited piece of well written criticism.Yes it is burning.But garbage on fire, with a beautiful glow, is still garbage.

Against the Machine argues that the internet is an undemocratic collection of detritus, at best. Overly commercialized, underdone on any actual expertise.He praised other forms of media, like a newspaper, saying, "it's a loose collection of individual minds that, because of their qualities of difference from each other - differences in knowledge, talent, responsibility, status, authority, ego - occupy in the aggregate a space somewhere between subjectivity and objectivity."

That's a beautiful line, but how is that not the internet?And how is Against the Machine not myopic?

A good idea very poorly executed
This book is a quick read - sadly, that is its only virtue.It was a good idea, to examine the hazards of becoming a society of entertainment consumers and not a society of producers and creative thinkers.Mr. Siegel's real argument seems to be with capitalism itself, but most of his criticism in Against the Machine is directed at those who make money via the Internet.Mr. Siegel makes a lot of claims in this book, but effective claims need the support of evidence, and the author has little more than anecdotal evidence based on his own limited observations.He rambles considerably and, at times, his claims are completely outlandish.Examples:
* He gets off to a bad start in the introduction, where he points out that motor vehicle fatalities in the 1960s reached 50,000 per year, but that "people stopped dying on the road in staggering numbers" when automakers became "safety-conscious."Except that in 2007, over 41,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes.How is 50,000 deaths "staggering" but 41,000 acceptable?
* Mr. Siegel writes, "Ten years ago, the space in a coffeehouse abounded in experience.Now that social space has been contracted into isolated points of wanting..."I'm not sure where the author hangs out, but my local cafes and restaurants practically roar with the sound of conversation.
* The author makes considerable criticism of Bill Gates.He conveniently avoids mentioning the thousands of lives that have been saved through the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
* Mr. Siegel hates the distribution of pornography online.Fair enough, I'm not wild about it either.But he makes a simplistic argument that avoids First Amendment complexities.He also brazenly writes, "...your immersion in this online world of forbidden images takes place on your home computer..."Right!It only takes place on your home computer if you seek it out.
* This is how the author describes shopping in a bricks-and-mortar store:"meeting someone new, running into a friend, daydreaming, talking on your cellphone while you browse through the aisles."When I go shopping, I experience crowded parking lots, being jostled by rude shoppers (many of whom are too wrapped up in cell phone conversations), and being insulted by rude cashiers.I'd love to find Mr. Siegel's magical store.
* The author doesn't seem to realize that personal ads and auctions and garage sales were around long before the Internet, judging from his hatred of Match.com and eBay.
* Mr. Siegel describes an actress pretending to be an emotionally scarred teen on YouTube and equates this with George W. Bush's distortions about WMD's in Iraq.To Mr Siegel, every slight is a grievous tragedy.
* Near the end of the book, the author writes that "you are stigmatized as being elitist and antidemocratic...every time you criticize the Internet..."I've heard many public and private individuals criticize the Internet without being labeled elitist or antidemocratic.
Overall, Mr. Siegel seems too lazy, too emotional and too out of touch to prepare a reasoned, mature argument.His complaints are so generic, it's often not even clear what his real argument is.He treats the Internet as some malicious entity, instead of a tool that can be used for malicious purposes by some individuals.He had a good opportunity with this book, and wasted it.Don't waste your time reading Against the Machine.

This book is so good
This book is so good.Siegel is one of the few writers who aren't caught up with all of the hype of Google and Web 2.0.What's popular isn't always what's right and Siegel is right.

Great message, but could have been covered in one essay or column.
