Book paid for never received.
I order the book for a college course I am taking on Sept 17, 2010.I still haven't received the book nor have I received any response from Amazon or the dealer about a refund or where the package is.I sent to requests for a tracking number or feedback of any sort and haven't heard from the dealer yet.I do not recommend purchases from this dealer.

good book but can be improved
This is a good book containing lots of important stuffs. You will find it useful. The two problems are: 1. arrangement of knowledges are not good 2. the language is too hard for a chem background student. For example, the discussion of lattices, I tried several hours on understanding his words but at last I got understood by reading Ashcroft's SSP book in less than one hour.

From the book it can be seen that the author is definitively an expert on his field, the only thing he needed is the ability to explain clearly his thoughts.

Good book, badly bound
I got this book quite soon, just four days after ordering. However, the binding of this book is so terrible that I have to return it.

A Gr8 Book on DFT Concepts
I like this book and would recommend it to any beginner into density functional theory. It explains all the modern electronic structure techniquesin a rather simple language. Its much more easier and quicker than going into hundreds of papers and not knowing where to start.

The biggest issue with this book is a rather poor organisational structure to the book. That's why I've given it a 4/5 rating. There are some concepts that have been easily thrown in at the end, into the appendices.. and having to turn pages too frequently can be annoying.

But the good work has been done & I'd ask Mr Martin to re-organise the content.

This book has the potential to be a classic.

Excellent book
As a graduate student attempting to learn density functional theory and its use in computer programmes, I have found this book to be an excellent addition to my library.Well structured and written.

Not impressive
Although the topics the book embrasses are current and essential for practising chemists, physisists and materials scientists the pedagogic care with which it explains some of the topics is poor.

The author makes the assumption that the reader is familiarized with the heavy mathematical formalism and notation which is commonplace in specialized physics articles but fails to remember that graduate students that don't have a physics background, and come from other schools of thought such as chemistry, biochemistry or materials science, might be target readers.

For instance the book's introduction to Hartree-Fock theory must be the most complicated I've ever seen with constant recourse to Dirac's delta function (without even revealing its presence, stating simply that it should be there). The link between DFT and statistical thermodynamics although interesting is not essential for the heart of the discussion. Some classic program applications like Siesta are presented but you get the feeling that it's just for show off.

All in all if you're a physicist with some years of experience in the field of planewave computation you might find the book interesting.

Otherwise if you're a beginner like me forget it! The book by Efthimios Kaxiras (Atomic and Electronic Structure of Solids) is more revealing and pedagogic and supplies every detail in the mathematical formalism. Some physicists with a more chemical sensitivity such as Harrison, chemists such as Roald Hoffmann, Jeremy Burdett or Michael Springborg or materials scientists like Adrian Sutton or David Pettifor are better suited for the novice. ... This book should be on every robot-loving Kindle
If you love science fiction, and particularly robots, then this great little limerick book is a must buy!

It's fun, frivolous, and just the thing to dip into to lighten your spirits.

My favourite starts "A silly old robot from Leeds", but I'm not going to finish it, you'll just have to buy the book!

Bad Limricks

I hate to give pan reviews, but really - the limericks in this book are poorly written, don't always rhyme, don't always follow the appropriate meter, and are rarely humorous.I read through more than half the poems to give it a chance, and I found perhaps one that was worthy of being published.I would give this a pass.

Unique, humorous, and very clever!
This is a collection of humorous limericks by U.K. novelist, Peter Salisbury, usually known for his "serious" science fictions novels, like "Passengers to Sentience," and it's upcoming sequel. I read several of these limericks to my two children and they loved every one.

One of my (many) favorites is;

A cute little android called Shelly
Looked marvelously good on the telly
But being a punk
She caused quite a funk
Drinking oil that was terribly smelly.

Only helpful for complete beginners but may confuse some
If you have absolutely no experience reading schematics this book will help you some. I got it because I have a basic understanding but wanted to brush up and improve my reading skills. The book was of no real help and I stopped reading it halfway through. They show you symbols but give no real explanation of how the acutal equipment functions in the circuit. The author also does a poor job of going trough the paths of more complicated circuits. There is also a full chapter explanation of "symbology" that tries to turn into some sort of sociology/linguistics lecture. Totally unhelpful except in the most basic way. He tried to make a book for the beginner but didn't include enough theory to make the material make sense.

Didn't help at all
This book was more about symbols and looking them up and not about actually explaining the flow of electricity through circuits. Anybody can look up symbols in a legend and find out what they are and surely we don't need a whole book about it. However getting use to reading the way electricity flows through various circuits and devices can get pretty confusing and this book did very little to help clear up that. That's what I call reading circuits. I thought this book would have various example circuits of increasing complexity and trace the path of current flow through each one and explain some of the anomalies we might encounter. Thumbs down on this one.

Don't bother
I bought this on impulse while ordering another book. Sorry I did, wasted my money. I can't really figure out who the intended audience is: If you have never been exposed to electrical schematics you wouldn't likely want this compendium of symbols with no conceptual background, and if you have had even a little conceptual background you have already been introduced to most of this. You don't need a book to find out what the schematic drawing of a transistor is, for instance, because any instructional material dealing with electronics circuits that you look at will include that information. Reading the individual symbols used in circuit diagrams and schematics isn't difficult- they are just symbols you can look up in any table of electronic symbols. The difficult part is conceptualizing how the components work together by "reading" the schematic- following the signal or current flow or being able to identify functional blocks, something this book does not help you with. All the circuits used as examples in this book are very basic, and the theory that is discussed is very superficial. I am not saying this book has no value, but it's value is minimal and can be easily found in the introductory chapters of most any primer on electronic circuits. For that I recommend a similar vintage TAB book written by G. Randy Sloan entitled "TAB Electronics Guide to Understanding Electricity and Electronics".

Great overview
There are countless excellent electronics books on the market, many targeted towards the beginner, but I believe that none are more suitable than this book for reading from beginning to end.If you take the intention of this book to heart, which is to skim the breadth of analog electronics, then you will find it to be a fun, fun read.Use it to create mental landmarks for your further exploration of specific topics.By no means should you expect to design a circuit just from having read this book, because that is definitely not what it is meant for.

The unfortunate fact is that analog electronics is a vast field, plagued with more apparent mysteries than is the field of digital electronics.For instance, many excellent introductory analog electronics books start with the op-amp and immediately dive into 5 chapters of detailed analysis of different op-amps and their circuits.(E.g. what is the frequency response, how to tweak it for temperature stability, what is the signal-to-noise ratio, etc, etc, etc.)That is what a circuit designer will appreciate, but to an electronics novice, getting a wonderful training in op-amps will not open his/her eyes to how anything fits in the big picture.

That is exactly where this book comes into play.It spends a mere few pages on the op-amp, doesn't try to analyze it hardly at all.You learn how you could possibly use it, and you're on to the next topic.At some point in the future, perhaps you might come across a circuit with an op-amp, you'll at least know what it roughly does, and if you choose, you can get another excellent book that focuses on op-amps to do your own design.

I think the market really needs a book such as this one, and the author has done a great service.

Way too brief
Covers a number of topics in one or two paragraph bites. Doesn't really go over many useful concepts. Reads like a promotional flier for something that would offer more in-depth work. Can't really recommend this even as a refresher.

Useful as a first exposure
If you are new to electronics and have no idea about circuits, transistors, diodes, antennas or even what these words really mean, this might be the right book for you. It introduces all these concepts, and lets you get exposed to them in a systematic way. However, the concepts may be introduced a bit haphazardly, and it's not always easy to see how all the material fits together. The book is also filled with exercises and quizzes, and these may be the most worthwhile aspects of the books. Nonetheless, keep in mind that electronics is an empirical discipline, so the real learning happens with hands-on experience with building (and blowing up) of actual physical circuits. But if you are just interested in getting exposed to the basic concepts, this would be a good book to read.

Direct and easy to understand
This book provides a solid foundation to electronics. I plan to keep it on my shelf for quick and easy reference.

This Book Saved My Bacon!
Yep. Like my title says. I'm an older person returning to school with no clue as to how to document the electronic sources I used for my first paper. I mean, we used to just use the library card file.... How DO you document a government chart you found on-line??? I hunted everywhere for help and finally found this book in it's on-line version. I pulled my paper out of the fire before the deadline with the information I found in it. Now I want to have a hard copy for the next round of papers.

If you're returning to school and grew up before personal computers, you'll appreciate this book!

excellent for citing sources and how to do research
this book is a gem. i've been looking for books to do just MLA and APA styles mainly and this fits the bill. as a library science student, their research tips and evaluating resources are on par to what we do as librarians, just a compact except of one of us. it's very up to date with dealing with electronic resources and how to cite them properly. there's no need to buy anything else if you're looking for a simple citation style book.

A useful reference for any student
As a writing teacher, I find this book very helpful in explaining research and documentation to my students. It presents basic research books, web sites, and indexes in almost every discipline, which makes it easy to send students working on any topic to the right starting point. There are dozens of books which explain documentation, but this is the best source I've seen for actual research tips.

This book is good if you are doing a business degree like me.
It is very detailed and contain relevant information. If anything, it is a little too detailed and could have been more concised.

A Really Poor Textbook
The style of the book is reminiscent of certain government procurement specifications:massive, poorly organized, compressing the least amount of explanation into the most amount of words, and with a large surfeit of references which seem to be there, at least in part, to make up for the lack of explanatory power of the text itself.

Key concepts are explained poorly, or not dealt with at all.For example, Product Life Cycle Management (PLM), addressed on pages 337-338, is a key management concept poorly explained.Here is the first sentence of that section: "Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) is a business strategy that enables manufactures to control and share product-related data as part of product design and development efforts and in support of supply chain operations (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_Lifecycle_Mangement, IBM.com 2007)."The text then trudges on in this vein.Most folk with a smattering of business ed. will recognize this as a sadly deficient explanation of PLM.For those who might not be familiar with PLM, it's a strategy that aims to take advantage of understanding the natural life cycles of products so that resources are geared appropriately to the different life cycle stages (which are essentially: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline).With an understanding of PLM, there are all kinds of clever things that businesses can do, such as early market share gains at the beginning, and life-cycle extension strategies toward the end.The book fails to describe the management concept, and consequently fails to do an adequate job of exploring eCommerce management issues.

The treatment of PLM is just one example of failing to explain a key concept, and not the worst.At the same time, relatively less important information is often belabored in the text.The unevenness and sense of disorganization is made worse when the same information, be it important or not, is repeated in several chapters in slightly different styles.

Meeting the needs of students is a low priority.This is evidenced in many and various ways, however, for the sake of brevity, let's look at how the book handles acronyms.Acronyms are frequently introduced throughout the book but often are not explained until pages later, if they're explained at all.Basically this is poor writing, but especially unforgivable in a textbook; the reader has no clue what the text is talking about.But wait there's a glossary!Don't bother... many of the acronyms are not included.But what about the acronyms that are included?Not good.Instead of handling acronyms in a logical way they're usually embedded at the end of the phrases they stand for, e.g. "wireless wide area network (WWAN)" so they're not easy to find.In a few cases, where the acronym is actually shown first in the glossary entry, it's listed in the alphabetical order of the first word of the acronym, e.g. "SMEs small-to-medium enterprises" is listed between "smartphone" and "sniping"; so that readers, who don't happen to know that the "S" stands for "small", have to go through all the "Ss" to catch sight of the "SME".

In addition to the copious reference citings within the body of the text, at the end of each chapter there are two or three pages that simply list references.These pages of references are useless for most students, so the majority of these could be put on the book's website, lightening the book by some 40 to 50 pages.Would this leave room for a list of acronyms perhaps?

The book has 910 pages, and the website contains an enormous amount of extra material.All this, taken together with the thousands of references, makes for a confusing, overwhelming, disheartening experience that's entirely at odds with inspiring students to understand and perhaps love their subject.

It seems to deserve one star, but it gets two stars because I'm probably more annoyed by this book's weaknesses than I should be, and therefore suspect that I'm missing giving appropriate credit to its good points, such as guiding the reader to numerous exciting websites, and including several interesting but gushingly written case studies. ... A tad dated but good.
A very few sections, such as those listing specific pieces of equiptment, are a little out dated and/or a little bit specific to the US Navy. Otherwise, this is a good introductary text on the subject.

Way over my head
I bought 3 books about basic electronics in an attempt to understand why hearing aids don't work. The other two books were helpful for learning about amplifiers and microphones but this Basic Electronics for Naval Training was way over my head.

For me this book was a waste but if you are building your own nuclear submarine this book may be helpful.

Outstanding Choice for Basic Electronics Theory
This is a book about basic electronics and the nitty-gritty of this science doesn't change over time.Integrated circuits aren't really basic electronics and neither is a lot of "modern" circuit design - there are many other book choices for that.

But if you want the basic science behind electronics - this is the best book you can get in my opinion.It is written in clear language for the average reader to understand.If you're a calculus wiz - this book isn't going to be your cup of tea.But ... if you're new to electronics and tend to struggle with some of the more difficult concepts - look no further as this book was really the core of basic electronics education for the U.S. Navy for many decades and the Navy trained THOUSANDS of technicians with the information in this book.The only way you could do better ... would be to get ahold of a set of the old Navy Electricity and Electronics Series Modules (also referred to as NEETS modules).That's basically a library of paperback books - each one devoted to a specific segment of electrical / electronic study - like COMPUTERS and Binary Logic, or Motors and Generators.Those modules are written in the same language as this book - tend to go a bit deeper into detail and are in nice digestible chunks.

Good luck with finding them though.

Even the section on vaccuum tubes in this book is a valuable exercise into electron science - and it's fun!And I still think electronic techs should be at least vaguely familiar with the principles of vaccuum tubes even in this day and age!

Considering the ancient date this book was published in, it still contains valuable information and surprisingly clear language.I guess the Navy really deosn't screw arond when it comes to writing clear instructions in electronics, as this book clearly proves.

A must read!
This book is an easy and enjoyable must read for anyone with a scientific curiosity about the world around them.

Fascinating Book.
Initially I was very disappointed at the author's approach to teaching the reader about electronics. (I was expecting formulas and jargon)At one point, I decided that I was not going to finish the book, but decided that I would be open-minded and give the author a fair shot.

By the end of the book, I was not only entertained, but I also learned something new about electronics and electricity which was my ultimate goal.

I'm amazed!
I picked this book up without knowing anything about electricity. Now that I'm finished, I can build a battery out of lemons, a radio out of a few dollars worth of Radio Shack parts, a truck light complete with an on/off switch, I know the similarities between a toaster, oven, and clothes dryer; and I finally understand how integrated circuits and transistors work even though I've been learning about computers for decades. Most importantly, this book has inspired me to take electrical engineering classes and pick up the more dry, boring textbook versions of the same information out there. Anyone who hasn't picked up this book but has the least bit interest in science or technology is doing themselves a real disfavor (is that even a word?). Pick it up right away, and happy experimenting!

Not bad, not exhaustive
I would recommend this to anyone interested in understanding elementary concepts.Overall I found this to be a pretty good effort from a part time author.Feels like it was written some time ago, but the conversational slang used in some parts is not overly distracting.I read this a 2nd time through in one setting (more or less) since I felt I hadn't paidenough attention the first go around to absorb the material. If your buying this as an intro to electronics, it helps to attempt a few very simple experiments along the way. I'm finding that to really grasp this subject while self teaching oneself requires you to get hands on as often as possible in addition to studying written materials.

Great book for someone new to the concept
I've been looking for a book that explains the concepts behind electricity in terms that I can understand.Typically, most sources will use water as a metaphor...but it simply falls short in some aspects.By creating an innovative (and funny) metaphor for the way electricity works ("voltage" is described as a hippie's "want to party"), it not only keeps you interested, but makes it clear because, for the most part, all of us can ascribe to wanting something (he could have easily called it a fat kid's "need to get cupcake").

People who are already advanced in this topic might find it somewhat pedestrian, but probably only if they have no sense of humor.I, for one, would've read it even if I weren't learning something that is critical to my future...and that is the greatest testament I can offer to this book. ... BIBLE is a BIG WORD to live up to!
After just a few moments of reviewing the book it becomes clear that the author has elected to present the "theory" of marine electrical and electronics systems without much information on practical applications of this information. Although this book would make good course material for anyone studying the subject, the term "bible" implies practical information and guidance which is NOT provided in this book.If you are interested in understanding the theory behind the subject, the book could be helpful, if you need practical information on how to diagnose and solve real problems encountered with existing marine electrical and electronic systems, making new installations, or avoiding electrical problems, you'll probably want to look elsewhere.

Very Useful
10 years ago I used this book to engineer and install the electrical system on an old 60's vintage sailboat.Since then, the boat has been sailed extensively and the system has performed flawlessly.The information on batteries, energy management, and charging is invaluable.

I work in a boatyard, and can honestly say that because of this book there are not many boats that are wired as well as mine.

Good Book not Perfect
It took me a bit to get used to the format of the book, its all outline style, point 1, 1a 1b etc. I did catch some mistakes in some tables... it seemed that wiring sizes in one table were different than another table. I wish some areas had more detailed infomration. But there is a LOT of information here, and he covers every category I can think of. I am currently in the process of rewiring my DC and it is very helpful. I use it in conjunction with Nigel Calder's book, and each has good info. Over all I prefer Calder, but like having both.

Not for powerboaters
It was very hard to tell from the description or the reviews that the book is almost exclusively designed for the wind-borne sailor. For example there is very little on multiple alternator charging systems and all pictures of boats are of sailboats.

Worth it
Ive just recently got into DIY guitar effects and read all different sorts of reviews by people about this book.
Ive managed to get quite alot out of this book from a musicians point of view.DIY Muso's generally are not interested in the maths behind electronics and just want to know the ins and outs of how things work when doing some diy work.

Definitely worth purchasing if you are interested in creating some of your own effects and learning how electronics can define your own sound.Pricewise, not too bad.

Pass on this one
I picked up a copy of this book to get some creative ideas in my project studio, but this book is clearly for the do-it-yourself hobbyist who might have an interest in music, not for a musician. If you like playing around with circuits, building things from parts and such, this book might be of interest (although there are far better, more detailed electronic home project type books available), this book should probably not have "musician" in the title.

Good book for Amatuers and Pros Alike
Bought this for my pro mechanic son. Lots of good info. Most pros will know much of it but surely not all. Everyone can learn something from this book. Anyone who works on OBD1 and OBD2 vehicles should have this in their toolbox. You are bound to need it sooner or later, and when you do you'll be happy to have it. Covers many makes and models, includes all generic codes as well as many manufacturer specific codes. Clearly written. Easy to understand. A good reference book. Keep it in the bathroom until you learn it all.

Excellent book
I bought this book for my fiance.He is really into electronics and he loved it because the book is well set up and explained.Just one problem thought.The book arrived from amazon totally wet and when I tried to contact them the form was returning an error.I was very disappointed because the pages were literally stuck together!

"MORE Gadgets" better than first book
The first Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius book had devices that were a bit more sci-fi and cool, but although the information was interesting, not many are going to actually be able to build any of them, as parts will be expensive and hard to find.This second GADGETS book actually has a few circuits that you could actually build with parts that are more available.

As I said in the other reviews on this series of "evil genius" books, be carefull as there are many books in this series, but it is the one that states "GADGETS" in the titles that you want, if you are wanting the circuits that will make you rub your hands together and twist your mustache as you make that sinister laugh.

Book I used when studying at DeVry
I was so happy to see this book on Amazon.com, it was a blast from the past, when I was studying electronics at DeVry Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL. I had this book 22yrs ago. I was suprised of the great condition of the book. The pages are in excellent condition and the binder is still in tacked, not bad for $0.01 charge. I love shopping on Amazon.com for books. The Electronic Basics You Need To Know
This is a classic for giving the basics of electronics to anyone interested in entering the field. I would classify it as a college level freshman or sophomore level introduction. It is simply one of the best!I personally purchased a new/old book, 4th edition. While some might think this means the material is dated, they would be wrong. The basics of electronics remain the same. A great supplement to Grob is the Tony R. Kuphaldt free e-book. The basics are what these books teach. If you want something shallow then get a book like "Horn's Basic Electronics Theory!" If you really want to learn something, get Grob.

This text leads into Malvino's "Electronic Principles." In this case, I would suggest you get the most recent edition of Malvino's book, which is what I did. If you go through both of these books, you will be more than ready for practical application knowledge.

If your're a newbie in the electronics world, this is the book you need to begin with, trust me. One can only go so far without a solid foundation and this is just what this book will help you master! I am a college physics major and I will start my BE in september 2007. Again, a solid foundation is paramount and if you buy this book, you will need to buy Dr. Malvino's Electronic Principles after. Sensor Curcuits nice start.
This is a well illustrated book giving the reader basic circuits, circuit symbols, component descriptions and usage. It did not provide me with the exact circuit I was wanting to make, but it gave me ideas for other projects and circuits. The notes section in the back is also useful for me to make notes and designs. Solid foundation and refresher info for the hobbyist.

Sensor circuits and projects
Forrest M. Mims III,Only the best information on the planet. This is an excellent reference manual, as it gives you Very usefull information on a range of circuits. You cannot go wrong with a Mims book. I have been reading his work since the 1970s.

Hands on, eccentric, fun
Personally, I enjoied a lot this book. Eccentric, funny, interesting with an "hands on" tone it intoduces to a good variety of sensors.
I would say that this book could be addressed both to beginners who can be introduced to the subjects in an "easy" not conventional way, and to the practitioners that can find in it useful suggestions immediatelydirected to the heart of the problem.
The subjects are explained in an "high level" way without entering in theoretical dissertation, you can find in it a brief explanation on how the sensor works and some schematics for managing the signal out from the sensor itself.
I repeat, not a conventional book. You have to be aware of this if you are planning tu buy it but, to me, it deserves your attention and it is , definitely, a good book.

Forrest Mims Strikes again...
Forest has a easy style to read and to understand.I needed to learn a bit more about building and using some sensors, so A Forrest Mims book is always a good addition to my reference shelf!

Noise Reduction Techniques In Electronic Systems, 2nd Edition Books
These books were excellent for the work that is now performing in our line of work.

Excellent book
Very good book, with little equations and down to Earth comments about issues EMC. Problem is that the book is from 1988 and all the initial discussion about FCC regulations is a bit outdated. Nevertheless it is a very good reference and I am glad I have it. Btw, I bought mine through one of Amazon's resellers so I dont have the pretty cover. I am not done reading it all but I am almost 1/2 way in and the material is very good.

Imprescindible
If you are a beginner or work in the EMC field, is the best book to start with. Many of other books have it as a reference. There is a new book from Mr Ott (2009) but I still haven't read it, in any case this one is a classic that is worth buying.

A reference books in noise control
BOOK: NOISE REDUCTION TECNIQUES IN ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
Depite this book has a lot of years, the basic principles have not changed and I find this book very instructive to learn things as types of noise, crosstalk, radiation, grounding and shielding techniques or cabling. Henry W. Ott and his book, are a reference in the world about noise control and EMC concepts.

Written in easy way to understand, with very little equations, I suggest that if you want to have a copy of one of the most famous books on this science, buy it

BOOK: ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY ENGINEERING
EMC topics are so complex that an expert is an expert because it acquires a high degree of specialization in a particular area of this science. This is the case with Mr. Ott, which I and many other people consider the world's number one expert in noise control in electronic circuits. He has a great ability as a communicator. I encounter fascinating his new book, it has given all the issues clearly. The book is well organized, easy to read and understand and you can jump from one chapter to another without losing any information. I highly recommend this book to all the people who want to learn more about this exciting science.

Couldn't put it down.
I build EEG sensors, and I started reading this book, expecting something like The Art of Electronics, except more detailed and covering only noise techniques. Instead, I got much, much more. The diagrams made *much* more sense than Horowitz and Hill's AOE, and the explanations were clear and consise. I was able to read it cover to cover in a weekend without getting bored from too much detail, and it had many many real measurements of noise in systems that made the information much more quantitative.

For instance, instead of saying "in order to get the most noise reduction, you need to use a shielded cable only grounded on one end", he says "a shielded cable grounded on one end has 84dB of attenuation to magnetic noise and much more for electric, while if the shield is grounded at both ends the attenuation is more like 36dB".

Those numbers are critical if you're trying to balance signal quality with cost.

Incomplete
Good book, but my order was incomplete.According to the product description, there was supposed to be a student study guide included.The main text was the only thing included in my order.I would have given a 5 star review, but that's hard to do when you get jipped out of half of the product.Things like this keep me from wanting to order online.I use to shop with Amazon pretty regularly, but problems such as this seem to happen more often than they use to.There is a lot to be said for the personal service you get at a brick and mortar store, that's all I'm saying.If you don't need the study guide (I do, I'm enrolled in an aviation technology program), and you don't mind buying from a misleading seller, go for it.I, however, intend to take my future business elsewhere.

Helpful and good reference but definitely outdated...
This is still a good addition to your library as a reference; it is of little use if you are installing a panel or instruments.

Don't waste your time
I have this book and it sits on my bookself collecting dust. It was a required text for school and I could never use it.It is poorly laid out and the descriptions of the systems are not in depth enough to actually give you a decent understanding of the material.The systems are out dated with current technology unless you are a general aviation mechanic.For the few systems that are in detail, the writer makes it very difficult for the beginning student to understand.When I taught I tried to lead the other students through the text and I found it easier to just use the book as a door stop than a teaching tool.The rest of the books in this series are wonderful, but I would never use this one again.

A little out of date, but has some good information
The edition is older and since its print many values have been rediscovered through more accurate experimentation. The processes taught and the math, however, will never change. My only concern about the book was quite a few examples had the decimal in the wrong place so always check the books calculations. Overall a good teaching tool or an even better supplementary text.

I'm taking a course in solid state devices and I needed the sixth edition but my professor said a fifth edition would do fine.The price difference was significant so I looked for the fifth edition.I received the book on time, it was in great condition and I'm extremely satisfied with it.

Done with Ch. 2 and I feel the need to review.
I have read up to chapter 3 and I am confused. This book could have some answers to the problems so I could verify that I understand the concepts that have been so loosely conveyed to me in the text.

Excellent and Up-to-Date Text, Better As a Second Text
Streetman wrote this book as an assistant professor almost 40 years ago at the rise of the industry. He and his former student (a professor at UT Austin) have continually updated this book into its sixth edition. With so many revisions and accolades, you can be quite confident that this book will serve as a solid text for learning about the operation and fabrication of traditional and modern semiconductor devices.

I've read this book twice through in detail along with Pierret's Semiconductor Device Fundamentals, parts of S. Sze's book, and many other books that cover semiconductor physics. For an undergraduate learning the material for the first time, I HIGHLY recommend reading Pierret's book instead, with this book for more detail on modern devices and additional information on basic topics. Pierret holds your hand as he walks you through the material, explaining many details and limiting cases for basic material...Streetman doesn't quite do that. Pierret also puts some emphasis on computational solutions and graphing via MATLAB, which I think is very useful for learning and necessary in more advanced works.

Streetman excels in mentioning and explaining many unconventional effects and advanced devices, as well as talking about integrated circuits. In addition, Streeman spends many sections on fabrication techniques and device processing. He also includes some nice curves, material properties, and useful equations placed in known areas of the book (front/back cover, appendix, etc...), which are very useful for quick reference. Clearly, this book is better for an advanced reader, but I did appreciate some of Streetman's explanations (especially for the operation of a BJT) and the overall progression of the sections, which are very useful for a first-time reader. For an even more advanced text, one should consult Simon Sze's text.

In conclusion, this is an excellent text and should be read by those who plan to stay in the field. It is perfectly fine for a first-time learner, but is better the second time around. I give it a 4/5 instead of 5/5 because I feel introductory books need to grind out the basics extensively, which Pierret does a better job of. ... Read more
