Geotechnical Engineering Book
It's an excellent book for engineers' use as recommended by a prof teaching the course.There are also newer versions of this textbook, but I am very happy to have this 4th edition.In addition, there is "Geotechnical Engg-A practical Problem Solving Approach" book that I recommend (ISBN-1-60427-016-7) that supports the textbook with good problem solving engineering examples.It should be also in your library if you deal with soil mechanics and designs.

The text is an excellent introduction to the world of civil engineering from a systems perspective.The goal is to introduce the tools and methods of systems analysis for the civil or environmental engineer.Applications are provided to illustrate the concepts.

I've seen better
This was the text book I used my senior year in college for an wastewater engineering class. The reading material does not explain the subject and the example problems included in the chapters are not useful. The questions at the end of the chapters are excellent test material but can not be solved by understanding the material within the chapter. ... Read more

Not needed if you heavily tab the reference manual
Quick Reference only contains equations found within the main reference manual.If studying from the main book, this quick reference is of limited usefulness if you know where everything is in the big book (e.g. use lots of the sticky tabs).

I didn't even use this book
I guess some people would find this book useful, but I had already tabbed up the big book and had my other formulas I needed in my notes.I just never found a reason to use it.

Not likely to be helpful on the exam
I purchased this book on the assumption that it would be a "quick reference" for the PE exam, similar to the quick reference NCEES provides for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.Far from it.It is just a bunch of equations. None of the variables are defined for the equations. There are no useful tables. For example, everyone knows the equation for thermal expansion, but a table of expansion coeficients (not to mention other material properties), that would be helpful! but, of course, not included.I will conclude by saying that I am very disappointed.

P.E. exam review
This book was most helpful in prearing for the comprehensive portion of the P.E. exam.I was able to answer most all general questions in the morning session of the new test.I did use the entire book and worked the problems in each chapter.I recommend additional references for your specific field of study, unless your field is water supply or structures.Both of these sections are extensive, particularly when using additional information from geotechnical chapters.

Don't bother!
If you already bought the review manual, save your money!This is nothing more than a regurgitation of the text without the problems.If you have not purchased the review manual, its still not worth the money. ... Read more

Several errors found
I and coworker started working through the environmental section and found several errors such as incorrect conversions.We wasted valuable time trying to figure out how we went wrong, when in fact, it was the book.

Don't waste your money
I initially purchased this book at the accompanying practice problems, flowchart and sample exam to begin my study.It was a complete waste of money.After reviewing a colleague's copy of the Lindenburg book purchased my own and I have done my primary prep with Lindeburg's reference manual and have been very happy with it.

Now that my study is fairly complete, I have been going back to familiarize myself with this book and the practice problems as an additional tool to put my fingers quickly on material - however I have found that information is sometimes wrong, references to exhibits are sometimes incorrect, and in general it appears this book is outdated.In addition, it only seems to be acceptable if you are already completely familiar with the material and need a brief reminder.Lindeburg and Gaswami can help if you need an actual overview of the topic.

As a total study package, I recommend Lindeburg's reference manual and practice problems, NCEES sample exam, 6 min problems and solutions in all topics (they are broken up in breadth and depth) and Civil Engineering All-In-One PE Exam Guide: Breadth and Depth by Indranil Goswami. You will obviously need additional reference materials for your particular depth.

Helpful, but can't be the only review book brought into exam
This book is a good book to use to review for the PE Civil Exam. It offers simple explanation and simple formulas to use for calculating problems in the PE Exam. I found that this book is less complicated than the Lindeburg book but does not include nearly the information in the Lindeburg book. I brought both books to the exam and found myself referencing both. If I had to bring only one review book to the exam, I'd have to bring the Lindeburg due to the amount of information in the book.If you need to learn something, this book explains it in an easy way to understand and doesn't over complicate simple equations.

Defective set of books
The firsy copy amazon sent me was defective.The cover was upside down AND bound on the WRONG margin.Ok, no big deal, mistakes happen.Contacted amazon and requested a replacement.Then amazon sent me the 2nd copy...guess what...SAME PROBLEM!!!! Comprehensive Sample PE Exam
The Civil PE Sample Examination by Michael Lindeburg, PE and PPI is a very thorough sample examination.It is also more difficult than the NCEES Civil Sample Examination and from what I have heard is more difficult than the actual PE exam.The questions are well worded, with few ambiguities, with more variety and overall questions than the NCEES sample exam.The solutions are somewhat more comprehensive than the NCEES sample exam though I do wish they were cross-referenced to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, also by Mr. Lindeburg.Additionally, the solutions do not always use the same notations as the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, though the discrepancies are not so great as to require too much digging for clarification.I like that the breadth problems are grouped by discipline.Overall, I highly recommend that prospective engineers use both this and the NCEES sample exam.This sample exam would be best used, I think, in the middle of your studying timeline to focus your remaining study time on your individual problem areas.Take the NCEES Sample Exam within the last two weeks of studying to get a better idea of the actual test problems.

Okay sample exam.
This practice exam is just okay.It's a good practice if you use it as a timed exam, and it will help identify the areas you need to spend more time studying.If your short on time for review--stick w/ the NCEES sample exam.

Too difficult - source of a frustrating day
I used this book prior to taking the PE exam, as a practice test - blocked out the whole day, stuck to the schedule, etc.In general, I found the problems to be very complicated and involved (NOT six minute problems), and the test was just too difficult.I was not able to complete this test in eight hours.When I took the actual PE exam a short time later, it was much simpler, and I finished both sessions with time to spare.

I will say this - if you can take the exam in this book in 8 hours, and get over half of the questions right, then you should have no problem on the real thing.

For a set of practice questions that more closely resembles the actual exam, I recommend the NCEES published book.Those questions have a comparable level of difficulty and take about the right amount of time to solve.

Broke Binding after one use
As far as reference material the book is excellent.However, I used the book last night for the first time and the first 40 pages were already coming apart from the book's binding.I want a new one!!!!

Needs polishing
There are many errors in this book.Some of the problems require some obscure methods in order to solve them.I doubt the PE Exam is as hard as some of the problems in this book.The online NCEES sample exam seemed more realistic in regards to the material tested.I wouldn't recommend this text except that there aren't really any better alternatives so I would say it is better practice than nothing. ... Remaking the World Review
I found this book to be pretty interesting as to the history of some major engineering events, and people.Petroski's book tend to get a bit philosophical, but not too much.His writing is intriguiing and well researched.I bought this book for a graduate class and liked his writing enough to buy three more of his books.

excellent collection of essays
I've been a fan of Henry Petroski for a long time, and this book is no exception.Remaking the World is a collection of essays, most of which originally appeared in American Scientist, the bimonthly magazine of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.

Petroski's usual engaging style and thorough research is used to tell us the story of a variety of structures, people, and concepts.And even though I'm a professional engineer, I knew hardly any of these stories already.

There's a piece about the Channel Tunnel and the over 2 century (!) history of proposals, politics, and arguments, up to its eventual completion.There is one about the Nobel Prize, which was funded and conceived by an engineer, and yet today tends to reward "pure" scientists.There's one about Henry Martyn Robert, an engineer in the Core of Engineering, and his best-known work, which is not a piece of civil engineering, but Robert's Rules of Order.And there's one called "On the Backs of Envelopes" that explores this common way for engineers to begin working on a problem.

Petroski includes enough detail and technology to keep a technical person engaged, and yet explains clearly and keeps things simple so that someone less technical can enjoy him too.One can see how he can be both a professor of Civil Engineering and of History.

Recommended for anyone who is curious about engineers and engineering.

Remaking the world and ourselves
Perhaps because they have become so good that they are taken for granted, engineers don't get the respect they used to and still deserve. It was different in the 19th century, when it was an open question whether the latest railroad, bridge or tunnel would work.

Many didn't. The occasional collapse of a highway bridge in the Twin Cities today is, by 19th century standards, small potatoes.

Professor Henry Petroski of Duke University made a reputation by writing about engineering catastrophes, but in these 19 essays, most originally published in American Scientist in the early 1990s, he concentrates on successes: the Channel Tunnel, the Ferris Wheel and several others.

The tone is mildly didactic. Petroski has spent his career not only unveiling the mysteries of engineering to the non-engineers but trying to get the P.E.s to appreciate the beauty, drama and social significance of their own profession.

Although many of the essays are about well-known projects, like the Hoover Dam, Petroski illuminates some of the lesser known aspects of them.

For me, the most interesting essays were not the ones about built projects, however, but about what might be called byways ofengineering. Petroski reveals a scandal about the Nobel Prizes (that the founder, Alfred Nobel, an engineer, seems to have intended that engineers be eligible, a wish that was scotched by academics) and about the career of the man behind Robert's Rules of Order (an American, not, as I had assumed, an Englishman).

Henry Martyn Robert wrote his rules because of the difficulties he had endured during meetings about public projects he ran for the Army Corps of Engineers. Having sat through many similar meetings, I can relate, and while Robert's Rules have been useful in many venues, those kinds of meetings still tend to be unpleasant.

Well, it's easier to engineer a bridge than a crowd, and Petroski's last essay, on the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, takes us to a place where the two converge. I'd say his optimistic approach there has not been validated by experience, but it wasn't the engineering that failed.

logistic and supportability issues
In Remaking the World: Adventures in Engineering, Henry Petroski writes about many man-made wonders of the world. Most intersting to me was the discussion on the logistic and supportability issues surrounding the design and development of the Panama Canal. Great book!

A Literary Disaster
Henry petroski's Remaking the World is one of the most poorly-written books I have come across in years.The author purports to regale the reader with "adventures in engineering," yet the few actual case histories of engineering projects are presented almost as afterthoughts.

The first third of the book is devoted to the Engineer's thought process, supposedly a mysterious and arcane pursuit far beyond the comprehension of mere mortals.We are led to believe that it is almost superhuman to actually lose sleep over an engineering problem, and that only another engineer can even begin to comprehend the complexities of the engineer's magnificent mind.In fact engineering is largely the practical application of common sense, tempered by extensive training and strong understanding of underlying theory.

We are then led on a tour of some of the engineering marvels of the past century, including Ferris' great Wheel, the Panama Canal, and the Petronas towers.However, each short vignette falls short of the heroic level the book repeatedly attempts and fails to reach.The discussion of the Ferris Wheel concludes that the only unique factor raising the Wheel to greatness is its sheer size, but the author neglects to even mention its diameter.The chapter on the Hoover Dam discusses at length the cross-sectional structure of the dam, invisible from photographs, but fails to provide a single sketch.

The chapter on Soil Mechanics is interpolated between a discussion of the painting "Men of Progress" and a section entitled "Is Technology Wired."There is no purpose to its placement, or even to its existence.It remains, like much of the book, a story in search of a purpose.The final chapter of the book is a discussion of the construction of the Petronas Towers.While the chapter itself is on topic and addresses the sociopolitical context of the Towers' construction, it concludes the book abruptly, leaving the reader expecting some sort of final chapter tying the various stories together. In sum, this book is poorly organized, poorly written and totally lacking in overall theme.One feels a certain pity for the students of Civil Engineering unfortunate enough to have been subjected to Professor Petroski's lecture courses.

Excellent Step-By-Step Calculations for the Mundane
This is a necessary text for all engineers. Such textbooks are highly useful in establishing standards for mundane calculations performed in many branches of engineering. I just recently replaced my first edition of this book with the newest so that I would have access to the new enviromental engineer calculations added.

The book is now divided into civil, mechanical, architectural, and chemical engineering. If you can't find what you need, the safest bet is to check out the mechanical section next. In my opinion, the mechanical section is far too large and it is time to abandon the division of this book by degrees. I would divide it up by task; this would require simplifying the table of contents and an expansion of the index but then who really uses a TOC with a handbook?

Why do I use the word mundane? You won't find complicated calculation procedures here, nor will you find a lot of selection criteria information. What I mean is a table ranking technology. A good example of this is the series of books by Coulson and Richardson on chemical engineering. In that series, under drying, for example, all the technology is ranked according to product dryness, particle sizes, etc.. None of this is presented here. What makes this book useful is that is presents a procedure understandable to junior engineers and clients for solving a particular problem such as calculating a slab thickness or the size of a ventilation duct.

This book is a must-have if you are a consultant, contractor, or just want an understanding of a basic engineering calculation.

A Must Have Tool for any Student or Practitioner of any field of Engineering

An essential reference and work tool for any engineer, student or technician, this handbook contains more than 5000 calculation procedures that will show, anybody and anyone working with engineering applications, quick and easy calculations formulas and procedures to solve most engineering problems encountered in the industries and in class.

Using a "cookbook" format, this book presents detailed "recipes" that describe the problem to be solved; step-by-step procedures to be followed; a worked out example of the typical problem; and (in most cases) presents cross-referenced related calculations.

Truly a most have. I am an Electronics Engineer, but I work as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Process Industries. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues in a day to day basic. This handy reference has proven most useful and time saving when in need of an specific formula, or shortcut.

I respectfully submit, that you need to appreciate Mr. Hicks' position.He has provided a conservative approach that will work in almost every situation.The empirical approach that you advocate may well work in most situations but I'll bet there is little margin built in forcontingencies.True, your solution may cost less, which is important.Butwill the low-margin, low cost solution still work 1 or 2 years from now orwill the pipe size be too small to allow for degradation/changes?Customerrepeat business must be a consideration, too.

I'm not trying to beconfrontational, and I understand what you're saying.But you have toappreciate the position that Mr. Hicks must take in such a handbook, and hetakes the only logical one, which is to be on the conservative side. People doing more than a couple of these calculations in a year in factshould consult more in-depth material, as you did.

Mr. Hicks' approach to sizing pipe for compressed air
Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems.I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air.His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications.Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM.Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping.The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree.Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project.My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems. ... Great for Practice!
The problems in this book are gennerally harder compared to CERM practice problems and the NCEES practice problems. The edition I got (3rd edition) is not in the multiple choice format... so you cannot reverse engineer your way to the question. Their are also a couple of variables that are assummed (that you would not expect)on certain practice problems. But in general good practice on the methodology and approach

Great Reference at Test Time
What a great resource to have while you're taking the test.Some of the problems in this book were very similar to those on the exam.I'd highly recommend this book, whether it's your first time taking the PE or you've taken it a few times, this book will help it be your last!

Help PE Exam
Taking a big exam like this can be unnerving if you don't know what to expect.This book will give you a good idea of what to expect from the PE Exam. I did some sample problems from the book for a couple of saturdays before the test to get back into "test" mode.That was a great help.The book also gives you an idea what you need to study.After all you aren't going to re-read all your college text books. By the way... I passed first time.

What I needed
The book came within a couple days and was fairly priced and new.

It's just a desk, of field, reference.
I've read several other of the reviews, and feel the need to add a little to the conversation.

This book will not make you into an engineer if you don't have the foundation knowledge required.It is a desk reference, useful mainly for a quick review, of principles outside your primary area of engineering practice, when you need a quick refresher.

I am a degreed and licensed Civil Engineer, but I am primarily a Construction Engineer.I use this book to get myself back upto speed on topics that I haven't dealt with in a while, and to do field checks on designs I'm trying to build before I call the Design Engineer.I've got several hundred text books, and years worth of journals, and technical reports available in my office.They don't fit in my breifcase and travel to the field well.The handbook does.

I wouldn't rely on the knowledge contained in this book alone, to execute a design for any complex or critical project.I doubt that any competent professional would, or should.

All said, it is worth every penny you spend on it.

and you find powerfull data in covers systems design, community and regional planning, the latest design methods for buildings, airports, highways, tunnels and bridges. It includes sections

what do you want else ,buy it and carry all knowlege you can have.

Still the bestCivilHandbook
The fifth edition update mainly reflects changes in code requirements for structural engineering.Other sections seem barely changed from the fourth edition.The water resources chapter has several misprinted tables.Use the corresponding tables out of the fourth edition.

Generalle well-written and easy to follow.Useful as a supplemental study reference for the Civil PE Exam.

Could use a good bibliography.

I read this one first, then the one by Lindeburg. There is no comparison- the Potter book has too many mistakes, outdated material, its organization does not mirror the exam's organization like the Lindeburg book does, it is not in depth enough to be of any use. After working through the Lindeburg book, I rarely even referred to this one (and the exam was a snap).

Horribly outdated reference
While trying to study from this book I found many outdated references.For instance, tables and charts for the 1984 "green book" and references to the 198-something HCM.The book also has a hydraulics and hydrology slant.Even the Highway section turns into a hydralogy review loosly based on highways.Do not buy this book, instead look into the Lindeman reference.

Too Many Mistakes & Too Many Unstated Assumptions
The mistakes, inconsistencies, and assumptions are frustrating.I don't know if there is anything better on the market. If so, I wish I had it right now.
