Extractions: The interdisciplinary computational engineering graduate program is associated with the NSF Engineering Research Center for Computational Field Simulation. Programs of study and research leading to both the Master of Science degree and the Doctor of Philosophy degree are available. Students can concentrate in a computational engineering application area, (e.g., computational fluid dynamics) in high performance computing, in computational mathematics, or in scientific visualization. The computational engineering program makes use of cross-disciplinary study to produce graduates with broad viewpoints and backgrounds to integrate the problem domain with engineering design and computational methods and tools, including computer science, computing technology, and mathematics. The program is open to students with undergraduate degrees in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a physical science. Regular admission requires that the student meet the admission requirements of the Office of the Graduate Studies, receive a positive recommendation of the computational engineering screening committee, and be accepted as a student by a member of the computational engineering graduate faculty. International students must have scored at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). All applicants are encouraged to submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination as part of the admission packet.

Extractions: Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI The proposed project will lead to the use of Internet for scientific computations needed in computational engineering. It will provide an easy access to engineering-specific codes which reside on the computer servers in ME/IUPUI for remote users, including those in Bloomington and West Lafayette campuses. It will open doors for metacomputing on the Internet via a parallel-computing hub to be established in conjunction with this project. The experiences gained through this project will provide valuable data for the developers of Internet 2 in Indiana University. It will increase the chances of the CFD Laboratory at ME/IUPUI for attracting funds from external sources. Technical support from IU/UITS will be sought for access to Internet 2. A Masterís student will be hired to work on this project who will also write a thesis on the technical aspects of the applications to be developed. A report will be prepared to summarize the findings, and a technical paper will be submitted to an Internet related conference. This project is expected to impact the both teaching and research activities in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IUPUI. This type of computing will eventually reduce the need for constantly maintaining and upgrading computer laboratories on the campus, since most of the computing will be done by remote users on the Internet.

Extractions: High Performance Computers can be used to solve problems in a variety of engineering disciplines. Typical examples include the stresses within a large concrete dam under earthqauke loading, the temperatures and pressures within a jet engine, or the levels of radioactive pollutant in the ground following a leak. Most methods divide the domain into a large number of small pieces which are divided across the multiple processors. These are then solved by means of Finite Element, Finite Volume, or Finite Difference Methods. The picture on the right shows a two of the vibration mode shapes of a beam supported at the left hand end which was analysed on the CSAR machines. The Keck grant will play an important role in developing Rice's work in computational engineering by providing laboratory and faculty work space in CCDO facilities in the Anne and Charles Duncan Hall. It will greatly facilitate the efforts of Rice faculty to realize the vast potential of computational engineering generally," said Rice President Malcolm Gillis. "The laboratory, conference room, and office space made possible by the Keck Foundation grant will become the locus of our efforts in computational discrete optimization." Discrete optimization, a critical component of computational engineering, is used to solve practical problems that involve choosing the best alternative from a field of possibilities. Many industries are dependent on discrete optimization techniques to guide them through complex design procedures.

The theme is broad, embracing all major aspects of the computational interests of the staff, whether these interests lie within our main area of Civil Engineering or in engineering more generally (with aspects of, for instance, aeronautical, mechanical, marine, chemical and materials engineering) or in topics such as artificial intelligence, neural networks, knowledge-based systems, etc. The primary aim of some members of staff is the development of advanced computer software for the investigation and solution of particular practical engineering problems. However, other members of staff may be involved only in the use of software (rather than its development) as part of a research study, parametric study, benchmarking exercise, etc. Overall, the aim of the theme is to form a group of people who have the collective expertise to produce the means of obtaining numerical solutions to a range of engineering problems, either as an end in itself or as part of a more general investigation when working with other groupings within the School,those from other Schools within the University or external collaborators.

In the materials arena computational research is centered around theoretical and computational aspects of materials science, establishing protocols for the modeling of structural evolution and thermomechanical behavior across multiple length scales. Computational fluid mechanics is concerned with the simulation of viscous flow past complex configurations with application to aircraft and ship design.
