Extractions: UCES Homepage UCES Archive Contents Classes Modules Problems Resources The primary goal of UCES is the creation of an archive of high quality educational materials in undergraduate computational science. These materials are freely available to educators throughout the country. Where possible, materials follow the UCES paradigm of computational science which stresses the journey from physical problem to computational solution. Extensive emphasis is placed on assessment of the computational result, with frequent use of visualization as a means of evaluation. UCES Paradigm UCES materials have been structured to be problem driven, modular in format, and interactive where appropriate. The subjects in each module are illustrated and motivated by specific problems and examples drawn from a wide variety of relevant fields, thus stressing the interdisciplinary nature of computational science. Contributed materials are assembled at the Krell Institute (through which the project is administered) and distributed electronically via the World Wide Web. A search and index mechanism will be instituted so that the large body of materials can be easily navigated.

Computational Engineering in Electromagnetics and Acoustics is a new graduate specialization within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering leading to either the M.S. or the Ph.D. degree. The program integrates acoustic and electromagnetic field analyses with modeling tools and circuit design techniques, enabling students to solve real-life problems, such as the design of magnets, microwave circuits, and ultrasound transducers. As industry seeks to efficiently design and optimize cost-effective electromechanical and microwave devices, and to develop ultrasound and EM equipment for improved nondestructive testing and medical imaging, it is making increased use of computer-aided electromagnetic and acoustic analysis methods. Well-designed computational software tools, which have the ability to predict and visualize complex electromagnetic and acoustic field behaviors, can reduce or eliminate many time-consuming and expensive trial-and-error experiments. WPI's ECE faculty recognizes the increasing importance of simulation tools based upon EM/acoustics principles, in addition to circuit computer-aided design (CAD) software, in the design of today's high-technology products. Consequently, the new graduate specialization in computational EM/acoustics engineering will offer highly integrated courses in such topics as fundamental EM/acoustics theories, numerical methods and industrial standard design procedures.

According to one recent publication, a typical major defense system would, if printed, measure 180 feet high or almost reach to the chin of the Statue of Liberty, and a well-known software code would extend even higher. Software engineering, the newest member in the family of engineering disciplines, is built on programming languages and software design abstractions that didn't even exist at the time of the Manhattan Project. Today at the Center for Computational Engineering we use all these languages to build new simulation tools to model anything from futuristic leading-edge technology to natural geological systems millions of years old. In simple terms, computational or software engineering is the art and science of expanding the field of engineering on a computer, but the details are infinitely more complicated. Software engineers confront a range of scales beyond any other engineering practice, design codes that are seldom completely understood until the finished software product is deployed, and complexity that rivals the most intricate of real-world engineering systems. We are charged with applying the most recent advances from our high tech neighbors in California's Silicon Valley to create tools that address some of our oldest societal concerns, such as defense, transportation, resource management, and communications. At the same time, we seek to achieve economies of scale that reward the taxpayers' investments and facilitate Department of Energy complex collaborations.
