Product Description

Olympic Weightlifting is a comprehensive guide to learning and instructing the Olympic and related lifts. Includes sections on teaching progressions, lift analyses, error correction, programming, competition, supplemental exercises, warm-up protocols, nutrition, and sample training programs.

"Simply the best book available on Olympic weightlifting."
Don Weideman, Vice President, Pacific Weightlifting Association

"Without a doubt the best book on the market today about Olympic-style weightlifting."
Mike Burgener, USA Weightlifting senior international coach

"Outstanding, Accurate, and Concise! A must read for athletes and coaches involved in the movements."
Daniel Camargo, USA Weightlifting International Coach; President, Florida Weightlifting Federation.

"Everett's Olympic Weightlifting text is one of the best instructional books for the sport to be published in years. This is a must have for every weightlifting/strength and conditioning coach's library shelf."
Bob Takano, Member USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame

"I highly recommend the book. I would strongly argue that this book belongs on the shelf between Pavel's Power to the People and Tommy Kono's Weightlifting: Olympic Style as the three books that will lead you to the next level.
Dan John

"Olympic Weightlifting: a Complete Guide for Athletes & Coaches is the best book available on teaching & training Olympic weightlifting. The book is comprehensive yet digestible while being easy to follow and apply."
Josh Everett, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, University of California Riverside

"This is the book I would recommend to anyone wanting to begin the sport of Weightlifting. Greg took material that has been discussed for decades by many many great coaches and authors and managed to present it with a clarity that has rarely, if ever, been achieved. I don t care how many years you have coached, or how many lifters you have coached, no one is going to read this book without coming across a few passages that make a light-bulb go off in his head. Greg has a way of taking material that has been argued and discussed to death, and presenting it in such a clear way that it makes you wonder why anything else ever had to be written or said."
Glenn Pendlay

"Everett s strengths are his attention to detail and intelligent, accessible progressions. You will love this book, and it will never end up at the used bookstore."
Robb Wolf, NorCal Strength & Conditioning

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for a solo Crossfitter
I purchased this book to allow me to clarify some empty holes in my Olympic lifting knowledge. I feel without doubt the book has improved my knowledge of the C&J, snatch and other supplemental lifts.

I am a self-taught Crossfitter who had been previously using web-based resources to improve my technique. Having a very detailed text with photos handy has proved substantially more useful than relying on the internet.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with a similar background to mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.
Great comprehensive book for learning and teaching the Olympic lifts.Greg gives just the right amount of detail without boggingyou down with technical jargon. The only thing better than reading his book would be to attend one of his seminars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Greg Everett's book is one of the most accessible and comprehensive weightlifting sources available for the coach and athlete today.I particularly like it's linear approach to the subject and its easy to understand laysman's language. From a beginner to an experienced pratitioner, there is a whole compendium of the essential material necessary to understand and to implement a weightlifting plan that is correct and results oriented.I highly recommend this book for every serious strength coach or weighlifting prctitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Guide
Having decided at the ripe young age of 50 to teach myself the Olympic lifts, I happened upon Greg Everett's book recently, and have found it an invaluable guide to my efforts. His step-by-step instruction is thorough and easy to understand. He gives the reader an in-depth analysis of the lifts, their execution, and all relevant assistance exercises. Even better, Greg also provides a variety of workout programs to allow you to implement the lifts at whatever level you want. I have purchased a number of texts and other materials on this subject, but noe believe that if I had come upon this book first, I would never have purchased anything else - it's all here, under one cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid book
This Book is solid it gives just the right amount of information, Greg does not try to impress the reader with his knowledge. I can see that Greg has put a lot of thought and effort into making this book and it shows. If you are looking to start Olympic lifting and you do not have access to a GOOD coach this book is a must. ... Read more

Product Description
Like the first edition, this second edition is intended to serve as a compendium of those aspects of Weightlifting and Weight-Training essential to the development of physical strength. A prominent feature of this book is the in-depth coverage of scientific and medical aspects of a forgotten sport. In this second edition, all efforts were made to revise the first edition and correct the typographical errors in spelling and grammar. The book Index and Glossary have been restructured more efficiently. In this edition, chapters six and seven, of the first edition, are consolidated into one chapter, with complete restructuring of the anatomical figures. The following two new chapters are added: Chapter seven –“Warm-up and Stretching” eases the difficulty of planning training without weight, prior to venturing into vigorous lifting. Chapter twenty one –“Performance Analysis”- immensely enhances the visual understanding of the dynamics of Weightlifting and the functional anatomy of the human body.It contains 395 impressive photographs of international Olympic weightlifters, beginning by Vasily Alxeev and Pyrros Dimas, and ending by Reza Zadeh. With colossal collections of annotated photographic art work, the second edition becomes a must have reference on weightlifting, athletic performance, human strife for glory, health, and graceful existence. The second edition adheres to the basic premise of the first edition of emphasizing axial training with vehement zeal. This is supported extensively by the hundreds of colorful photographs, drawings, and personal narrations. The very unique aspect of the second edition is the extensive elaboration on performance analysis of contemporary weightlifters by an engineer, physician, weightlifter, and math teacher. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The book is so-so
I think the book is okay; it's a little overpriced. Some of the information is outdated and contradictory to more recent studies. The book can also be a little dry at times, reading more like a technical manual.I feel some of the drawings and illustrations could be more clear. The author relies on poor drawings to illustrate lifting techniques.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very poorly written
This book reads like a terrible translation.Sometimes I was able to figure out what the author was trying to say, but there were several passages that were so poorly written I suspected that entire words were either missing or accidentally added. This is not an occasional problem - it is in every single paragraph and practically every sentence. The editors did the author a real disservice by not either requiring him or having someone else rewrite this book so that it was clear and easily read.Books on this subject are often hard to understand - it's a complex subject - but the problem with this book isn't the difficulty of the material. It's practically incomprehensible in places, and completely frustrating throughout, due solely to its abysmal writing. No offense to the author, as I suspect English is his second language and I believe he has some good information here. But unless this book is completely rewritten it is not worth your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Joy On Every Page
"Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training"-2nd Ed. is more than a very good book on what it's title suggests. As previous reviewers have covered the expansive index, I'll try to add some more insights. This book benefits tremendously from the author's 40 years of hands-on experience in Olympic Lifting combined with his education as an MD and an engineer, coupled with an unstoppable enthousiasm for spreading the word of lifting, exercising and healthy living.

Only one of many positive results is that inside the book is found the most complete technical Olympic Lifting manual I have ever read, wich on the one hand is lavishly illustrated and lively written in an attractive lay-out, and on the other hand explains the intricate mechanical why and how of the Olympic lifts through every inch from the approach to the bar until the finish in exquisite detail. A near magical mix of utterly completetechnical explanation of execution, assistance exercises and training planning, and inviting, low-threshhold writing.

These characteristics jump out in every chapter, on every page, in any subject covered. The clean & jerk and the snatch stand central stage but around them are added and rigorously coveredall the important ingedients for health, not only competition, or training with a barbell: cardio-vascular health, physiology down to cellular level, mental and social issues, flexibility, axial strength, adequate nutrition, maximizing training longevity, body-building and bodyweight exercises, facts & fallacies, all sub-divided again. This is a rare book where the title falls short on the contents. 576 pages (including index) of solid "uplifting" info. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars great effort
The accurate and high quality pictures are the strongest side of this book.
The writer is really intelligent and knows what he is talking about. You can disagree with some of his advice, but at least you understand where he is coming from.
Caution: at least half of the book is on health and exercise in general, but an olympic weightlifter will get his/her money's worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid information
There have been some pretty in depth reviews that cover this book well, but I had a couple of points I wanted to make.

This book is a terrific resource for anyone wanting to take the step into weightlifting or strength training. The emphasis of this book upon strength and healthy living is somewhat at odds with most mainstream literature due to their basis in bodybuilding. As a result this book and the author should be commended for promoting a healthy approach to weight training as a lifestyle and practice. Finally someone who "gets it", lifting shouldn't be about looking healthy and strong, it should be about being healthy and strong.

The only flaw I see in this book is the author's english skills. His first language is clearly not english and as such he does have some confusing sentences and paragraphs. But I only noticed this for the first 1-2 chapters, either you get used to it or it the bulk of the book has been more tightly edited.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in strength training, especially those wishing to learn the snatch and clean and jerk. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good buy
Lots of good information for the money.
The book needs more pictures - too much dry text, but you can't get a better book on the market.

Also, the author clearly states where he inserted his own thoughts and ideas, and what information comes from scientific research. A big plus not found in other sources where they simply tell you "weightlifters shouldn't bench press" without any proof (Mr. Drechsler honestly says "in my opinion, ..." or "from my personal experience, ...")

2-0 out of 5 stars Full of regurgitated general training information, but sadly lacking in Oly lifting instruction
As a newbie to Olympic weightlifting, but not new to weight training, I purchased this book hoping to learn more about the technique of the lifts themselves.Unfortunately I found that while this book is chock full ofregurgitated "basic weight training" info which is easily found in multitudes of other books about weight training, it is markedly lacking in illustrations of the Olympic lifts - the main reason someone would probably purchase this book.

Of course, this may be part of the plot of the author/publisher because the reader will soon notice, after realizing that this book is NOT going to be of much help, that a companion video is strongly hyped - yes, folks its the old "You bought this book sucker, now in order to truly understand you must buy yet more products from me...".Needless to say this is one video I will NOT be buying based on principle alone. These type of videos can be seen for free on many internet websites.

If anyone knows of a good book about Olympic weightlifting that focuses on the lifts themselves, gives easily followed instructions as to the placement of the feet, hands, and other techniques required to be successful in Oly lifting could you let us know?Such a book would contain a series of quality photographs showing the entire body of the lifter with concise instructions, rather than something like "...the feet should not move outwards.." while the photo clearly shows the lifters feet have moved outwards!Such a book would OMIT the 100's of pages of "basic information" that is useless to anyone with some experience, but rather steer the reader to research those topics elsewhere.

I have read other Oly lifting books by Cissik (basically almost a word for word copy of much of the material given in the book being reviewed without one original thought)and another huge book that is almost useless, if not amusing, by Al-Hewi(?).This gentleman has managed to gather so much useless information in one book he deserves a prize! This makes me to wonder - are there any decent books covering Olympic weightlifting on the market?

Its no wonder that Olympic weightlifting is the ugly step-sister of weight training in the USA.How can young people learn and embrace the sport of Olympic weightlifting with the dearth of instructional tools and lack of available coaching in "Anytown, USA"?

Finally and unfortunately, if a reader has a serious interest in Olympic weightlifting, published material about how to actually do the lifts is sadly lacking and this book will do nothing to help.Unless you are fortunate to have access to a coach who actually knows what he/she is doing you are simply out of luck in hoping to learn these lifts except on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars highy recommended
This book is the real encyclopedia with thorough contemplation ofa very experienced author. You will not find numerous pictures or the beginning stuff several times repeated in this work. But you will find two-column dense text of pure-gold information that every good and skillful weightlifter or bodybuilder should know.
Up to now I gave a very good recommendation for Mr. El-Hewie’s ‘Weightlifting & Strength Training’, which is also encyclopedic work on the same subject. It is interesting to compare these two books.

Shortly said: ‘Weightlifting & Strength Training’ by Mr. El-Hewie is full of pictures and a little more on the beginner’s side when compared to the Mr. Drechsler’s book. On the other edge is the ‘Weightlifting Encyclopedia’ by Mr. Drechsler which has almost no pictures, but is much more dedicated to the experienced lifter; it does not repeat itself through it’s contents, and it has a very deep treatment of the weightlifting practice, which is more suitable for experienced practitioner; also it is cheaper.

But this distinction is not quite justified: El-Hewie`s book have the outstanding analysis of muscular imbalance in relation to Olympic weightlifting, which I could not find in Drechsler`s book at all. Some pictures from El-Hewie`s book are really worth thousands of words. It seems that the books complement each other beautifully.

Which book should you buy after all? I think you should have both books; either as a professional or a beginner you will have extremely valuable information in both books.

I recommend this book highly for every experienced weightlifter and for the inspired beginners.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT for beginners, very good for more advanced lifters
The book is huge and really explains every tiny aspect of O lifting. If you are a beginner it can actually be a bad thing since you're flooded with an enormous amount of information, but when you have a solid foundation and you aren't just lifting to improve your performance but participating in the sport of weightlifting this book is for you.
Too little pictures to demonstrate technique.(there is a videocompagnon available however)

5-0 out of 5 stars It is about time to have a Second Edition.
It is about time for Mr. Drechsler to refine his encyclopedia in a newer edition. He must find ways of reducing the lengthy pages of text, without illustration or appropriate paragraph breaks, into less boring and modern style. His wealth of knowledge is greatly undermined by his extensive literal description of techniques and approaches, with skimpy illustrations.

The book contents attest to the dedication and genuine desire of its author to enhance the sport of Weightlifting and to convey the best information the author could offer.

The design of the book cover is poor where the title is pushed aside and reduced into a tiny unnoticeable scratch. A book with such wealth of knowledge deserves better cover design, better paragraph design, and attractive illustrations and quotations between transitions of thoughts in order to keep the reader interested and staying awake while reading. ... Customer Reviews (2)

5-0 out of 5 stars Real-life experience of an accomplished weightlifting icon.
The book is forwarded by Arthur Drechsler, which fulfills Kono's wish that "Weightlifting never dies, it gets better."The legendry feature of this book lies in its natural flow of thoughts that stems from the personal experience of a renowned weightlifter.

Kono competed and trained on three lifts: Clean and Press, Snatch, and Clean and Jerk. He witnessed the astronomical progress in human strength due to newly developed training routines. In this book, Tommy Kono does not confuse the epidemic commercialism of the fitness industry in America with the real and systematic training that leads to peak human performance.

The book's main theme focuses on: (1) quality of training, (2) standardized weightlifting training program, (3) flexibility, and (4) training for competition. It could be summed up as follows.

Section I: "The ABCs of Olympic Weightlifting", plunges into lower back strength, general conditioning, and nutrition. It discusses the "strong back arch" with habitual emphasis on lumbar arch. It then addresses shoulder and hip and leg flexibility in terms of four exercises for shoulder "loosening" using a wooden stick. It addresses the center of mass and acceleration in relation to the pelvis as the "Seat of Power". Weightlifting power is then exemplified in the essential "Pulls" from the floor to shoulder height. It starts by the describing the hand-grips of various pulls, then addresses the height of the pull for the Clean and the Snatch.

Section II:"The Olympic Lifts", starts with the Snatch lift posturing by David Rigert's arched back, then describes the three phases of the Pull through a case analysis of Ivanchenko's and Urrutia lift technique. The Clean starts with the initial pull through Nassiri's, Alexseev's and Patera's lift technique. It sums up the Clean into two pulls, body stretch, shrug, and bounding out.The Jerk, describes the grip, bar trajectory, and leg motion. It mainly deals with the split jerk.

Section III: "The Training Plan", describes the three phases of conditioning, strengthening, and competing. It discusses the differences between the American trend of expedient training for maximal and quick results versus the European trend of over-training for record breaking purposes. It then delves into the logical sequence of exercising for the high mobility of Olympic weightlifting. It discusses the specifics of weightlifting exercises, reps, sets, load, massing muscles, warm-up, stretch, and quality versus duration of training.

Section IV: "Facts and Fallacies", discusses technical specification of experience gained from practice, double-knee-bend pulls, merits of Power Clean versus Squat Clean, purpose and styles of Squat, lifting repetitions, and flexibility issues.

Section V: "Competition Preparation", describes how to prepare for contest, how the contest progresses, and lists 12 keys and tips for successful competition lifting

Section VI: "My Weightlifting Experiences", details personal experience from first competition, National Championship, Olympic Games, World Championships, and International participation in lifting contests that stretched from 1952 through 1963.

Section VII: "Weightlifting Wisdom", entails 150 snippets that sum up the author's reflection on weightlifting experience that led Tommy Kono attains International fame in such rare sport.

Section VIII: "State of Mind", attempts to convey to the reader real life stories on how others made it to the top. It starts by defining one's true potential. It then details the stories of the Spitz Brothers, Vinci and Faith, Schemansky, the George Brothers, Puleo and Ogata, and Kono & Pride.

Section IX: "Coaches' Notes", details coaching issues such as the One Arm Snatch, Priority Training, the Squat Program, Head and Shoulders, Efficient Lifting, Training Philosophy, and Progress in lifting.

Product Description
Ever need a fact or quotation on "weightlifting"? Designed for speechwriters, journalists, writers, researchers, students, professors, teachers, historians, academics, scrapbookers, trivia buffs and word lovers, this is the largest book ever created for this word. It represents a compilation of "single sentences" and/or "short paragraphs" from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on anything relating to the term "weightlifting," including non-conventional usage and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities. This is not an encyclopedic book, but rather a collage of statements made using the word "weightlifting," or related words (e.g. inflections, synonyms or antonyms). This title is one of a series of books that considers all major vocabulary words. The entries in each book cover all parts of speech (noun, verb, adverb or adjective usage) as well as use in modern slang, pop culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This data dump results in many unexpected examples for "weightlifting," since the editorial decision to include or exclude terms is purely a computer-generated linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under fair use conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great.
Winnig weightlifting, by R.V. Fodor, is a reasonably good basic manual for beginning weightlifters and powerlifters. The text is generally accurate, but some of the accompanying illustrationsshow some of the worst lifting form of all time. Buy this if you lifted in the state of New Mexico in the mid 70's, as all of the photos feature New Mexican lifters of that era. ... Read more
