4-0 out of 5 stars Well done
Book is in a good condition. It was send, however, a bit tool ate. Everything else is wonderful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, but could be better for others
Overall, this book gives solid advice on the fundamentals.Great for beginners and intermediates who need a reveiw of key fundamentals. It needs some improvement on the example pictures.Possibly using pictures of real people in action demonstrating the subject matter would be better than the hand drawn pictures.Multi-framed pictures of the ground strokes and serves would be a great improvement. The exercises and drill didn't do much for me, but suppose would be helpful for others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a solid foundations of basic skills
It is hard to learn a game like tennis from a book but this book does the best job on communicating the basic skills and concepts.Jim Brown helps new players develop confidence through the well written instructions. When a family member wanted to learn about tennis, this is the book I had them read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good activity book for teaching fundamentals to 1-8 pupils
This book is useful to teach people the fundamentals of the game without the aid of video or trained personnel. I've read many books on the subject and found very few printed resources that can communicate as effectively asthis book. The chapters are well-organized, pertinent, and clear.

Ihaven't seen my copy of the book in 3 years, as a co-worker I loaned it torefuses to return it. My recollection is that the chapters take the reader,or more appropriately the coach/instructor, through the steps to accomplisheach outlined task. The introduction/overview, demonstration, drills, andreview of each topic is handled quite well. I've been an accomplishedplayer for 29 years and a teaching professional for the last 21 and Ilearned some helpful drills that are very appropriate for most levels ofplayers. I use this guide as a training manual for my newest assistants.Additionally, I place copies of lessons at each court for a circuit-type,self-learning/drilling workout for many of my teenage intermediate/advancedplayer workouts. The drills are easy to follow.

While I don't advocateall of the drills, I'm impressed by the layout of the learning structurecreated. I recommend this reference book for virtually all instructors. Ibelieve many learning individuals would benefit from reviewing thecontents, as they could easily follow the steps. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is essentially a reference guide that those learning the game can use to support their training, written in a very understandable style. The author introduces the forehand, backhand and serve just like he would in a group situation with a group of beginner juniors. Here Patrick reveals the teaching techniques and progressions that can be followed by parents, aspiring coaches and anyone wishing to help beginner players get off to the right start. He moves on to show how he teaches topspin and slice to an individual and the basic volley. Patrick then subtly takes the reader into sections that intermediate and advanced players can really benefit from. These sections include the return of serve, approach shot, advanced volley and overhead. He moves on to look in depth at shots such as the lob, half volley and drop shot. His sections on fitness and how to prepare for a match will really help those who desire to be ready and compete well on the tennis court. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
This book was much more than I expected because it wasn't the usual tennis instruction book with the same pictures and same instructions. It went into more depth and approached tennis lessons from the instructor perspective, which really helps.I think you'll be happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" for Coaches and Players
If I could have only one book to teach or learn the game, this would be it.Patrick uses clear instructions, photographs, and diagrams to give you the basics and beyond. He lays out drills and techniques that will help anyone improve whether a beginning or advanced player.Patrick diagnoses problems and gives the cures. If you are a coach you will appreciate the program Patrick lays out for your team.If you put his plan into action, you players will improve. He helps you diagnose your players' faults and gives the cures.Inspiring photos of tennis celebs, instructive photos of Patrick and his students, and clear descriptions of how to craft every stroke.

1-0 out of 5 stars Archaic Information
I purchased this book for my High School aged son to read and use to help his overall speed in tennis. It's like going back in a time capsual...it may have been cutting-edge 2 or 3 decades ago but it's so old it isn't even readable. It has found a place on a stack with other books that didn't pan out. No teenager on earth would read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acquiring Proper Tennis Movement - Moving faster therefore!!
Another good piece of work from the former Chief Trainer of the German Tennis Federation.Richard is still very much active in research for tennis - in all aspects of the game.Currently, a much sought after speaker at the International Tennis Federation's seminars worldwide, this new work by him provides greater practical knowledge to be added for speed around/across the tennis court, as distinct from pure speed down a 100 metre track. Covered topics include enhancing innate speed, power in speed, endurance etc. Coaches of all levels of skill will definitely find something useful in this new book.I know I have, besides the hundreds of coaches in Europe and the Americas applying it on court at this moment when you are reading this review.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Story That Teaches the Secrets of Bad Writing
This book is anti-literature. The "story" is silly, cliched, and unconvincing. I threw the book out. I could have attempted to re-sell it, or even donate it to a local library, but I wanted to do my small part in making sure I didn't unnecessarily expose anyone else to Mr. Zosel's vision. I'm a little annoyed that Amazon requires that I award this book even one star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, educational read
Solid sport psychology concepts in an engaging format. I didn't put the book down until I was finished with the last page! Tennis players of all ages can relate to Tony and learn with him as he develops his mental game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tony's Da Bomb
I think Vision Tennis is a great book.It teaches people how to deal with tough situations in the game of tennis.Being a tournament player, I was able to learn a lot of things that helped me to be a better player, both physically and mentally.I liked it when the author described how he played against the top players in his region. The author, Michael Zosel told you how not to choke and what you should do before playing a match. It ended up being a great story in the end.If you want to get better both mentally and physically you must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars an engaging story that's fun to read
My daughter would not put it down. She immediately used ideas from the book to improve her performance in tournament play. She came off the court excitedly telling me about how she had dealt with negative self-talk, aswell as improvements in her visualization and concentration. She washaving more fun and playing better!(She beat a girl soundly in straightsets that just weeks before had beaten her.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Vision Tennis
Provides the tools of mental toughness in a format which is incredibly fun and enjoyable to read.Extremely useful for both juniors and adults.....anyone who want to raise the level of their game. This bookwould be an ideal "team book" for coaches to provide to theirplayers, so that each can develop/adapt their own personal approach tomental toughness. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to improve your game.
This is an excellent book on the subject. This is the second tennis drill book I have read, and this one is slightly better. The 100 drills are explained in the most efficient and concise way possible. In tennis, a picture is worth a thousand words. And, the author understands that perfectly well.Almost every single drill is clearly illustrated which greatly enhances your understanding of what that specific drill is about.

The author covers all the tennis drill situations you would encounter, single, threesome, doubles, and groups.

I am a former college player.I have played, watched, and studied tennis all my life. But, I probably knew only half of the drills mentioned in this book.In other words, this book taught me a lot of skills I could focus on practicing on the tennis court to improve my game.In tennis, there is no finish line. You are never too good. But, this book will help you get as good as you can or want to get, and have a lot of fun doing it.I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good drills organized by the skills you want to develop.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light on coaching technique
This book was adequate for explaining the rules of the game and providing a structure to frame a new league tennis coach's plan for the season, but contained very limited information on "how to teach tennis to kids."I am a father teaching tennis to my three children (ages 10, 8 and 6).I was looking for a resource to provide me ideas, games and concepts to teach the game correctly to my kids in fun environment. This book didn't give me anything I can use.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start...
This book is a good start for beginner coaches getting into the industry. Pros interested in rearing more competitive youngsters need to consider more that are not in this book. If you are starting to coach, this is a good book to start with. If you have some experience already with coaching children and adolescents, this book may be a little elementary with mostly review pointers.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK!
I own all seven of the Tennis Shoes books and love and cherish each of them.I read this book for my book report and couldn't wait for the next report to start the next one, "The Lost Scrolls"!I am unhappyhe titled this book, "The Seven Churches" because the SevenChurches are mentioned ONCE in the h\whole story. It should be "TheLost Scrolls Part 1".All in all I rate this book 100 out of 5stars!Must read this series!

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK BY HEIMERDINGER
When I first heard that the main character was going to be Harry Hawkins in this book I thought for sure that this book and The Lost Scrolls wouldn't be as good as the first for with Jim Hawkins as the maincharacter. To my suprise it was just as good as all of the other TennisShoes books (which is really really good.) I can't wait to readHeimerdinger's next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book.
Tennis Shoes Among the Seven Churches by Chris Heimerdinger a new book that I just read. It tells the adventure of fifteen year old Harry Hawkins and his soon to be sister Megan Sorenson who go on an adventure into FrostCave. This cave takes them back in time. During this adventure they meet aboy named Jessie who has no parents or relatives so they take him withthem, they almost get eaten by a pack of heinas, they get to watch agladiator fight, and they got reunited with some old friends. The obsticalsthat they have to go through makes this book an excellcnt book. At thebegining of the story Harrys sister gets hurt in a motorcycle accident andwhile she is in the hospital she mentioned the name of an old friend thatshe met when she went into the cave when she was younger, his name wasMarcos. When Harry, Megan, and Jessie are traveling, Megan and Jessie gotkidnapped. The purpose of the story is to entertain people and thecharcterization in the story is excellent because it is developed wellthrough the story. Harry is a boy worried about his happines and when hefinds who he is looking for he knows his sisters happines will improve. Overall I think Tennis Shoes Among the Seven Churches is a great book. Ithink this book is a great addition to literature.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was a good book with alot of exciting adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen of Tennis will help your game
I have been playing tennis all my life but never considered the nuances of the sport and the total effect it had on my life.I read this book before a match and it helped me to focus on what is important about my playing, besides the winning and competing, how it is the shared experience of both of us or the four of us trying to be considerate and polite, yet still trying to win.I am a more relaxed player and person now that I know the unwritten rules of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I began this book thinking that I would learn all about how I could beat my mom at Tennis, but by the end of the book I learned much more. I learned that technique and practice is important but also having an optimistic outlook and good etitique is too. I learned how to be a classier person and how when I lose or win what to say to the other person and also to myself. Additionally, it was the positivity in my game that helped me beat my mom for the first time ever! This book really changed my life, I think more constructively and encouraging than I ever have and recommend it for people who want to change not only their thoughts on the Tennis Court but also for people who want to change the way they think about everything!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Nancy Koran!

As a newcomer to tennis, I have been feeling a bit embarrassed on the court. After reading Nancy Koran's book, I feel so much more confident in my interactions with my coach and my tennis partners. Questions I have been either too shy or too ignorant to ask regarding tennis etiquette are answered in a way that's easy to understand and even fun to read. Also, I love the pictures of tennis greats and am inspired by their advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone who plays tennis

I just finished this book, and I have to say, I'm rather impressed with the wealth of information presented. Yes, the one reviewer who said that included in the book are some basic things like "bring extra balls", but you know, anyone who plays tennis knows that there are plenty of people who really need this simple "common sense" fact pointed out to them.

However, there's a LOT more than "simple common sense" in this book - the author clearly knows her stuff, and she's also brought together essentially a who's who of tennis stars to share their wisdom. Stuff like how to avoid feeling rushed and how to tactfully slow down an opponent is priceless. As someone who plays a bit slow, I got my money's worth on that one tip.

Lastly, the book is a fun read. You can open it to any page and get something out of it. Rather useful in a book like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis as a tool for a balanced state of mind
Zen is a state of mind and playing tennis, if well played, brings us to another state of mind. A winning way of life is really a good title for this book. I was surprised to see how much the etiquette spoke in this book can apply to any area of our lives. Presented in humurous, entertaining and original way, this book expose all the different aspects around and on the tennis court.
I also enjoyed the collective of the short presentations from the tennis greats.
Great gift for all beginners and those who have been playing for a long time but never got any answers about very basic questions on the etiquette of tennis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A certifiable encyclopedia of tennis in a day by day format
Tennis is a sport with a long and storied history, full of intriguing trivia and facts. "On This Day in Tennis History: A Day-By-Day Anthology of Anecdotes and Historical Happenings" covers every day of the year and reveals important events in tennis history that had occurred on that particular day. The result is a certifiable encyclopedia of tennis in a day by day format. Any dedicated student of the game as well as general fans of sports trivia should strongly consider acquiring "On This Day in Tennis History".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Tennis and Sports History Fans
Three years ago, I worked at the US Open compiling the daily tournament draw sheet. I began each issue in the same manner - by selecting my favorite item from a list of anecdotes and historical happenings for each day in US Open history.

This compilation was the brainchild of Randy Walker, who worked for years in the USTA's Marketing and Communications Division. Now Walker has expanded his media resource into a book encompassing generations of players and tournaments worldwide.

"On This Day in Tennis History" is an entertaining read for any sports history aficionado and an essential resource for tennis fans and writers alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis tidbits
This book is nirvana for the tennis aficionado. The entire book is easy reading; filled with anecdotes, history, and other snippets of tennis information. Organized by events occurring on a yearly calendar, the blurbs put into perspective the grandeur of the game and showcases the many characters who have played the game at its highest level.
One of the darkest and disheartening stories appears on page 141, dated April 16. That's when beloved tennis star Arthur Ashe announced his retirement at a San Francisco lecture. "Health is a factor, but that's not the only reason... I feel pretty good. My doctors say I will live to be 100, but they won't put that in writing."
Even those who don't follow the game closely know the circumstances of the legend's death and the impact it had on the game and the cultural and political landscape of the 80's.
On account of this book, for the first time in a decade, I watched the men's final of the Australian Open. What a match that was! With tennis titans Nadal and Federer embattled in a classic duel, I thought of Randy Walker's book and how it revived my interest in the game.
Hopefully, it will do the same for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete encyclopedia of tennis history
The sports trivia fan in general and the tennis fan in particular will love this book. For each day of the year, including February 29, a short list of tennis events that occurred on that day is given. A complete description of the event is presented and the range of coverage is extensive. There are facts about great matches, unusual aspects regarding the matches and historic firsts and lasts from the significant to the arcane. For example, there is the following entry for July 18, 1930

"Wilmer Allison saves a record 18 match points in his Davis Cup victory against Giorgio de Stefani of Italy in the Davis Cup Inter-Zone Final at Roland Garros in Paris, France."

The mention of the record 18 match points demonstrates the level of detail included in the descriptions. Everything from the environmental heat on the court to the foul language used by the players is part of the complete explanations of the major events in the sport of tennis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Anthology
Do you know when Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, the most fiery American champions, nearly came to blows? It was in the five-set final of the Michelob Light Challenge, a mere exhibition, in Rosemount, Ill., on Jan. 10, 1982. Do you know when Jack Kramer cruised to his first Wimbledon title -- losing only 37 games in seven matches as the first man to win there wearing shorts rather than traditional long flannel pants -- with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in the Royal Box? It was July 4, 1947.
Do you know who was the last player to win an ATP tour event with a wooden racket? It was quirky stylist Miloslav Mecir, who won a five-set final over Yannick Noah at Indian Wells on March 19, 1989. What great act of sportsmanship was done by Andy Roddick May 5, 2005 that brought him accolades? Why was Aug. 31, 1881 a great day for American tennis, Aug. 15, 1995 a great day for Monica Seles, and Feb. 22, 2007 a great day for the entire sport? I'm not going to give away all the answers because I don't want to spoil the fun you'll have reading this day-by-day anthology of anecdotes, famous and not-so-famous historical happenings, and mini-biographies. Mixed in with the facts and stats are plenty of spicy and amusing quotes and often surprising trivia. One way or another, and often from several different angles, past and present champions from Tilden to Federer and Lenglen to Serena and near-champions are revealed in important and fascinating ways. "On This Day in Tennis History" is actually a mini-encyclopedia in disguise so that you can enjoy it in bits and pieces and then reread it at your leisure and pleasure. If you're a tennis newbie, you'll be enlightened on every page. If you're a tennis lifer, it will refresh your fond memories of glorious yesteryears. Either way, this book is a big winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-conceived original tactical system but artificial
Paul Wardlaw coaches at Iowa and formerly coached at Kenyon College. He is a well-known college coach and is well-respected.
His "Directionals" system is original in how it is organized/structured. Teachers before him also taught directionals but didn't articulate it as well. His directionals is a form of high-percentage tennis. Some players are not mentally wired to perform directionals and will express confusion when confronting a player who violates directionals (what do you do?). Directionals also sometimes conflict with creativity (or genius, like McEnroe or Hingis) and automaticity (being in the zone). There are a few lesser tactical problems with the "Directionals", e.g., situations where "Directionals" break down. "Directionals" do, however, help many players to understand "high percentage" tennis. "Directionals" also help players to anticipate based on geometry of the court and high-percentage play. It also allows coaches to present tactical ideas in an organized manner. There are many fine coaches who like "Directionals". Most players should be exposed to the concept of directionals...but it is for them to conceptualize their own style and tactics. Still, it is a very fine, original (although hyper-organized?!) contribution to tennis theory. And, every good player usually incorporates a good portion of "directionals" (high-percentage tennis) in their game. A final plus is that there are a wealth of tactical drills many of which don't involve directionals. In fact, 2/3 of the book is based on tactical drills. Recommended for coaches and teaching pros. Recommended for those advanced players looking for systematic tactics or just simply for more drills. Not recommended for beginners and low intermediates (below 3.5 NTRP) since they won't be able to execute many of the tactics and drills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pressure Tennis
This book was useful.I am an advanced player, but learned a lot from it, especially a lot of useful drills to emphasize his "directionals".

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all players and coaches
This book is for anyone that wants to improve their play.It shows you how to pick appropiate shot selection so that every shot becomes automatic and you won't have to think about it.These are called "Wardlaws Directionals" and any tennis coach worth anything or aspires to beneeds to know. There are also practice schedules that can be used bycoaches.A Great book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Discover Tennis Essentials
I have fond memories of watching tennis and also playing tennis. As children, my brothers and I spend many happy hours on a tennis court soaking up the sun. Even in college, tennis was still very popular. While outdoor tennis courts seem a bit more difficult to find where I live now, I did recently find one near my home.

This book is a nice refresher course. It is divided up into 11 sections:

Preparing to Play - Clothing, shoes, choosing a racquet, stretching and exercises.
On the Court
The Forehand
The Backhand
The Serve
Return Serve
The Forehand Volley
The Backhand Volley
Lob & Smash
Approach Play
The Game of Tennis

This is the perfect book to introduce you to the game of tennis because it teaches you all the basic elements and then gives you extra tips to improve your game. If you are learning tennis with a friend or taking a class, this book is handy for looking up step-by-step information and expert advice.
