1-0 out of 5 stars Very little information that is tennis specific
I have been working out for over fifty years and found this book to be a big disappointment. There are a few pages stating how your tennis will benefit from weight training.Other than that, there is almost nothing that is tennis specific.

I found this book to be a complete waste of money for anyone who already has knowledge of weight training in general.I did not see any new exercises that were not already described in various other weight training manuals.

If you are a novice to weight training, this book may be of some value to you. However, there are better weight training books out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent Info, Horribly designed book
This book has no index, making it impossible to find any specific exercises without combing through the entire book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for starting somewhere
I have a few of the books from this series, and they're very good. Pictures for everything and well written out plans. Obviously everyone needs their own plan, so don't expect the plans to be perfect for everyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense Approach To Tennis
A tennis pro told me to purchase this book and I am glad I did.Just plain common sense approach to learning tennis.

1-0 out of 5 stars A total waste of money
After reading this book and viewing the author's instructional dvd series, I promptly trashed the whole lot.

Regardless of hitting style, consistent ball control is attained by moving the racquet head through the ball in the direction of and facing the intended target. Nearly everything being taught here helps ensure that this does not occur. Also, the mantra that you should always be doing what feels most natural reminds me of the diet fad promoter that tells you that you can continue eating all of your favorite foods and still achieve the promised results. Unfortunately, effective hitting techniques and efficient court movements are not instinctive. They need to be learned and can then become a natural part of one's game with sufficient practice and repetition.

Each playing style has its own advantages and disadvantages but all are subject to the laws of physics and our anatomy. The authors repeatedly demonstrate an ignorance of these (i.e. a shorter radius swing produces more power) and a lack of tennis common sense (i.e. swinging across your body gives you better control than swinging toward the target).

So why do today's top pros play this way? For the most part, they don't. Only their forehand groundstrokes (and predominately the men's) reflect these teachings.

5-0 out of 5 stars different
Wegner has a different approach to tennis, shattering many myths like take back the racquet early, watch your footworkpush the racquet forward, etc. He simplfies the strokes into just a few main concepts, especially starting with topspin as a beginner. I was hitting the ball too early and read several books before this one gave me the answer- wait for the bounce! This book is only for beginners and intermediates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern tennis
I quite agree with Wagner of this book.
Readers need to draw out right message intended as well as fundamental principle between lines.
All reasonable and theoretical points he delivers.

Getting through this book, I have changed my tennis style to modern tennis in understanding his points at all.
My tennis is much better than yesterday.
My stroke is becoming so powerful as well as secure.
Recommend this book strongly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but it works!!
I have been a tennis coach for 22 years and have coached at every level. I was a college coach for years and now I coach players at the National level. I read Oscar's book about 5 years ago and thought it was somewhat flimsy. It looked too simple to be true. It is as if I wanted it to be complex to work. The truth is I reread this book three times looking for the truth it held. I decided to try the drills and exercises on myself before totally discounting the book. What I found was that Oscar's concepts were genius. These concepts have bridged the technical aspects of tennis with the all important feel and rhythm. It is a must read for all coaches and students. I do agree that seeing the DVD's was a big help. I think you can get them both as a set here at Amazon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising Big Smiling Tennis Kids
Terrific book.As I'm just starting to get my 15 year-old daughter into her first tournament, this book came just in time.I used a dozen page markers for repeat reads in the first half of the book alone. My daughter feels much more confident about summer tournaments than she would have otherwise. The chapter on the self-assessed junior rating points system was especially enlightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor
Buy this book then read it , think about it then reread it. I bought the hardcover 10 months ago. I immediately saw I was heading down the wrong road. I completely "stopped" with my child. I knew I was making some mistakes that needed correcting. this book was a godsend. No matter how serious or casual the goals for you child , this book will make you think and help you develop a more positive long term approach. My daughter and I are still extremely involved, we just enjoy it more. Now she drags me to the tennis court. I reread this book every other month. My thanks to the author. enough said

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully and Simply Written
I like the way this book is written. Yes, it's for "kids", but it doesn't read like a child-like book. It speaks to children, coaches and parents in a way that is intelligent, clear and empathetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had read earlier....
I wish this book was around years ago (I am now an empty nester, my sons are married). My two sons played the junior tennis tournaments, but are now into golf. There is so much useful information and guidance I wish I had access to when my kids were growing up. Kudos to Keith for a book critically important for any tennis parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis Kids is a Winner!
I loved this book!I have learned more about tennis from a child's point of view than anything else I have read. As a tennis coach for children, this is the best book on the subject and I use the principals for other sports as well. A great and entertaining read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice serves a great story!
Alice the Tennis Fairy was my favorite book I read this summer, because the goblin umpire was making tennis balls go faster, so the goblins wouldn't get the magic racquet. The girls in the story, Rachel and Kirsty, helped the fairies many times. The story ends when the game, set, and match were over, and when they found the magic racquet. Another funny part was when the goblins got covered with cream and strawberries.

I recommend this book for anyone who believes in mythical creatures, and believes there are boy fairies.

Product Description
Pete Sampras is arguably the greatest tennis player ever, a man whose hard-nosedwork ethic led to an unprecedented number one world ranking for 286 weeks, and whoseprodigious talent made possible a record-setting fourteen Grand Slam titles. Whilehis more vocal rivals sometimes grabbed the headlines, Pete always preferred to lethis racket do the talking.

Until now.

In A Champion’s Mind, the tennis great whoso often exhibited visible discomfort with letting people “inside his head” finallyopens up. An athletic prodigy, Pete resolved from his earliest playing days neverto let anything get in the way of his love for the game. But while this single-mindeddetermination led to tennis domination, success didn’t come without a price. Theconstant pressure of competing on the world’s biggest stage—in the unblinking eyeof a media machine hungry for more than mere athletic greatness—took its toll.

Here for the first time Pete speaks freely about what it was like to possess whathe calls “the Gift.” He writes about the personal trials he faced—including the deathof a longtime coach and confidant—and the struggles he gutted his way through whilebeing seemingly on top of the world. Among the book’s most riveting scenes are anearly devastating loss to Stefan Edberg that led Pete to make a monastic commitmentto delivering on his natural talent; a grueling, four-hour-plus match against AlexCorretja during which Pete became seriously ill; fierce on-court battles with rivaland friend Andre Agassi; and the triumphant last match of Pete’s career at the finalsof the 2002 U.S. Open.

In A Champion’s Mind, one of the most revered, successful, and intensely private players in the history of tennis offers an intimate look atthe life of an elite athlete.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sincere autoboigraphy but a little bit boring
Well written sincere autobiography by arguably the greatest player of all times, but it's too much about tennis; he doesn't go down on personal life, unlike Andre Agassi's autobiography. As a player, Sampras was well-known for his mind balance and quietness, and his book reflects so. Nonetheless, it's a recommendable reading for eager tennis aficionados

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Simple:if you like a lot tennis and a little bit Pete Sampras (or a lot), then buy this book. Interesting and entertaining, especially that Pete Sampras was not really the guy who let himself on the spotlight.

your firend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted from his book
This is certainly the best book of a player that I have read. I have also read Becker's autobiography and Agassi's "Open". But I felt too uncomfortable with all their revelations about their affairs, drugs etc. That's not what I wanted to read about. What I was hoping to read was on how they analyzed opponents, on what their strategies were, how they shaped their game, how they approached the biggest matches of their careers. I didn't want to read all their private stuff. Who cares ?

And Sampras gave me all that. Starting from what made him play tennis, to how he decided to change his game style, what he thought about his opponents etc.

All in all, a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars As good as Sampras is
If you read this book AFTER Agassi's Open, you will be disappointed because the tones of the two are totally different. Sampras' books is as Sampras is. I could see why some reviewers said it's boring. Through the book you could see Sampras as the person of who he is: highly disciplined, focused, quiet, and introvert. And that is how the book comes about. Towards the end Sampras seems to come out of his shell some. Reading his autobiography and you will see, understand and appreciate what it takes to remain No. 1 for such a long time. I don't mind the stats at the beginning of each chapter. That just more represents Sampras of who he is, the athlete who's very focused and disciplined in the sports of his choosing. All the data might be boring to some readers, but you get several tips out of the book as a tennis player because here and there he would share his mentality/tactics/strategies of how he played especially against different kinds of players. He even provided his opinions/analysis of each top player in his time. All those represent the book title, A Champion's Mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Sampras
This is a must-reading book for the fans of tennis, sports, Sampras and for readers who enjoy understanding how successful people achieve their success. Well written, well documented. How to get to the top... and stay there for a long time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book
I borrowed this book from the library and found it so great that I had to buy it. It is full of great drills to do and my coach and I started practicing a few. It really works. Although I have been playing for over 20 years this book was a big eye opener into a lot of areas around the game I had no idea existed. The one practice that stood out for me is to identify which ball to attack and which one to play safe. It definitely is a book to have and work and improve your game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for advanced players!
Background, I am a high school tennis coach and a teaching pro. This book has more useful information in the first 20 pages than all of my other books on tennis strategy and tactics.I used the drills with my league teams as well as the HS team this year and everyone really improved.

More pointed at singles players but also has excellent information and drills for doubles teams.

Not limited to women only, the information applies just as well to male players.

Highly recommended to any advanced player, coach or teaching pro. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good combination
Overall, this is a very good combination for tennis instructors and coaches. The DVD is an enhancement to the book and I will have more detail later on.

I watch the DVD on my laptop and on my low cost Digitec DVD player, and it works great. When I tried to watch it on my Sony player (connected to my big screen TV), the player could not read the DVD; it must be a DVD zone issue. I COULD NOT FIND ANY SELECTION TO COMMUNICATE WITH Amazon FOR THIS ISSUE!

Now back to the product. First I check out the book from the library and was very impressed with the content and went on line to shop for the book. Then I decided to buy the DVD with the book after reading some reviews. The DVD helps me understand some of the drills in more detail. I use most of the drills from coach Cayer with my high school students and group doubles drills.

I would have given 5 stars if the DVD would work on all DVD players.
Recommendation, read the book first then watch the video. There are a lot more information in the book but the video will help you understand and visualize the drills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good content, but it's mostly drills
Overall content is good. It's mostly drills though with some strategy info in the beginning and end sections.

I bought this book, because I saw the video by the same author.I think the video is a more efficient way to understand what he is saying, especially if you are a visual learner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast delivery!
This is a good book and has saved me from tennis lessons in this down economy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for doubles players and doubles fans
"Doubles Tennis Tactics" is the most authoritative book written on this subject.Doubles requires specific shot selection, court positioning and movement patterns for each player: the server, server's partner, receiver, and receiver's partner.Louis Cayer, a distinguished coach, analyzes all that in depth. The chapter on playing styles analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the five major playing styles, and that alone is reason enough for tournament players to buy this book. But the timeless question is: how can teams maximize teamwork to accentuate their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.
"Doubles Tennis Tactics" answers that brilliantly with expert tactics as well as more than 100 drills that will improve the skills and increase confidence so that those tactics work during competition. How do you become better at poaching? What is the I Formation, and why can it be highly effective? What are the best options for the receiving team to neutralize the serving team.Read "Doubles Tennis Tactics" and find the answers to these and many other important questions. You'll be glad you did -- whether you're a tournament player, recreational player or a fan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tennis fans will cherish this book
The life of any sports professional can be hectic and hard on the family. "The Education of a Tennis Player" is the account of Rod Laver, the only tennis player to have ever won all four major tennis titles. With two Grand Slams and a four time Wimbledon champion, this is his story from beginning to end. How, as a child in his home town in Australia, he was always on the tennis court with his brothers to the grinding tours to the off time as he shares being an amateur to becoming a pro. After each chapter the reader will find tips and strategies on improving their tennis game. He shares all the details of his life: how he almost did not make it to his own wedding, wondering if he would be there in time for his first child to be born, and his stroke in 1998. Rod Laver is a very down to earth man and not one to let the game go to his head.

Tennis fans will cherish this book. Originally published in 1971, this book was revised in 2009 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his memorable second Grand Slam and recovery from his near fatal stroke.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bridget's Review
Rod Laver is the only person who has won the Grand Slam twice. All four major tennis titles Wimbledon, US, French and Australian Championships went to Rod in a single year. In this book, Rod shares his tennis experience from amateur to pro. He includes tips at the end of each chapter to help you with your game. Some of the helpful hints apply to tennis only but others can be used in your everyday life.

I really like metaphors and that's how I interpreted some of the information in this book. Tennis fans everywhere should read this book. Rod is a likable person with wisdom to share to all those who are open to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Education Of A Tennis Player
Probably the single greatest tennis book to ever be written. Rod Laver...who both Pete Sampras and John McEnroe consider the best of all time.....is writing this book people! You know Rod Laver...the only guy to win two (2) Grand Slams.

Basically what you have here is the best tennis player ever...writing a book. Hence, the best tennis book ever written.

As far as I'm concerned ( www.RadioTennis.com) this is the Magna Carta of tennis writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A way to understand why I get injured and what to do about it
I've been playing tennis for 25 years, and the first 20 went by without a serious injury. But once I got hurt, I couldn't figure out how to recover.I had a job that had me sitting down for 10+ hours a day, and I just started getting less and less able to play tennis without pain. The exercises Suzanna describes in this book helped me to recover from those injuries, and to condition my body to avoid injury from the stresses of playing tennis. They also showed me how to compensate for a variety of the stresses I was inflicting on my body as part of my desk job.I highly recommend the book both for the explanations it gives of the types of stresses that lead to injury, and the excellent photos and descriptions that make it possible to understand how to do each exercise and what to focus on.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a "must have" book for ALL active people
Suzanna McGee has done an excellent job of presenting essential injury prevention material for tennis players of all levels. The suggested stretches and exercises would in fact benefit anyone who is active, even those that don't play tennis. As a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, I recommend this book and give it "two thumbs up"!

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY ... A Practical Guide Tennis Injury Prevention
For most of the 30+ years I've played tennis, I have been plagued with injury after injury. I spent tons of money on sports medicine doctors, chiropractors, rehab specialist and books written by so called 'experts'! However ... the injuries keep coming and the money keeps going!

If your story sounds anything like mine I encourage you to BUY THIS BOOK! The information is easy to understand, and more importantly, the exercises and advice are practical. And don't have to be a Cirque du Soleil acrobat to perform the daily exercises. You also get lots of advice on nutrition and other valuable information to keep you healthy overall.

Thank you Suzanna for adding another 20 years to my enjoyment of tennis .... and life!

I know Suzanna well, since I'm a regular tennis partner of hers.4 years ago, I suffered 2 consecutive knee injuries to the same area (MCL) due to the unbalanced nature of tennis and my lack of fitness. She taught me how to counteract the imbalances from playing tennis and to get stronger. Now I'm able to play at a higher level and more hours per week than when I was younger. The book incorporates the ideas that I've personally experienced from her over the years I've known her.

All tennis, racketball, and paddle tennis players (or any sport that involves heavy use of one side of the body) will greatly benefit from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ageless athletes unite!
This is a very excellent guide for tennis players but could also be useful for other athletes.I know the author personally and she is in great shape mentally and physically. Her approach is really focused on taking care of the body before injuries result. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
This is an excellent book to have if you are a tennis player. Injuries do happen playing tennis and it is good to have a single source to help you know what is the injury, how to recuperate. I liked the strengthening exercises in the book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference
I bought it for the tennis specific strengthening and physical therapy exercises. Very happy with the purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference on the subject
If you are interested in this book, there is a good probability you are a pretty good player of middle age.In your youth your body felt invulnerable. You could play all day long injure free. Now, with a full life and little exercise during the working week you are facing an onslaught of tennis injuries. This is the fate of zillionsof former high school and college players.

The title of the book alone reminds one how tasking tennis is on agingjoints. You won't find similar books related to surfing, swimming , or biking. All these sports are associated with very smooth motions absent of any shock on the joints. But, tennis is just the opposite.

The book serves as an encyclopedia of all the injuries you could potentially face playing tennis. The author being an M.D. specializing in sports medicine does an excellent job in imparting information about diagnostic, prevention, and treatment for each one of them. Explanations of exercises are very clear associated with precise drawings that leaves no doubt about what you should be doing.

I am just in the midst of nursing an Achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis. The author has provided me all the info I need to treat these conditions.I am doing the related exercises. And, I am already feeling much better. In probably just a few weeks, I should be able to get back on the courts reasonably safely.

For your own sake, I hope you don't need this book. But, if you do don't hesitate getting it.I think it is excellent in imparting information on sport medicine that your typical general practitioner won't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Tennis
As a first year Coach I found this book Excellent. It taught me tennis from the Coach's perspective, rather then the players.

I had played both High School Tennis, as well as College Tennis for a Southeastern Conference school. This book helped me to understand the mental part of the game that had top be imparted to the players, as well as the refresher for the physical part. Passing on the mental toughness required for the players was critical for their future in Tennis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Common sense when you can't find it anywhere on the court
I play a lot of social doubles and I wasn't happy with my progress at the 3.1-3.5 level.I needed to clean up my tactics and strategies.Ugh.

Beyond the Big Shots did wonders for me.Its not heavy handed. It is written in an easy conversational style that really engages you.He breaks down the game into various components and then makes you think about what you're doing incorrectly. There are some funny little boxes with quips and quotes to lighten things up.The funny thing is that those are the things I remember when I'm on court and under pressure.

It is certainly a good book if you're a 3.6 and below doubles player to clean up your act.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a frustrated, middle aged man
I've been trying to improve my game for the last 5 years. The harder I try, the more frustrated I get. This book was great for me.It has lots of useful ideas that help me play smarter, safer, more consistently.I'm not pressing as much, have reduced my errors, and actually hitting the ball better.Definitely the best tennis book I've bought.

5-0 out of 5 stars fit to play has everything
I've been teaching for 34 years, a member in the USPTA for more than 10 years and Fit to Play Tennis: High Performance Training Tips covers a lot of ground. It is in my opinion the book that covers almost every part of the game and does it concisely and in clear understandable English. If you buy only one book to help you with strategy, tactics, stroke production, conditioning, the mental side, injury prevention and treatment, drills and a great deal more this is the book. It is the closest I have found to being the complete book on high performance tennis training. I can not recommend it high enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentfor all tennis players at any level
Fit to Play Tennis: High Performance Training Tips

In contrary to what some other review said, that this book is not for recreational tennis players, I believe that this book is just perfect for any level player. Many of the chapters about gym training, stretching and myofascial release keep the tennis players healthy and injury free. The more hours one spends on the court, the more one needs to do the off court training/rehabilitation. And especially a recreational player, because they generally don't have massage/physical therapists around them all the time. They have to do it on their own, and this book will teach you how.

Besides that, the book has chapters on nutrition, mental aspects of the game, planning in long term, etc. Great book!!! I have it in my bed and just randomly open it and just read a few pages again and again!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
This book gives a good general overview on fitness and how it applies to tennis. The chapters on flexibility and dynamic warm-ups are well written. However, it fails to provide specific programs which can be incorporated forstrength and cardiovascular training. In addition, much of the information is geared toward professional or traveling junior players, and not the recreational player, who is most likely to be purchasing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for tennis players!
This is an extremely helpful book that has tips ranging from on court training to injury prevention.

My daughter is a junior tournamnet tennis player and she plays a lot of tennis. When she visited Canada, she injured her lower back/hip. After she went to several doctors, we finally found Carl to help her recover from her injury. It turned out to be a malaligned hip problem, which he has written a whole chapter about in this book. Under Carl's treatment, my daughter recovered in 4 weeks. About ten months later, my daughter felt pain in her lower back/hip again, we realized that it may be hip malalignment again, so we followed the correction exercise in this book and she recovered in two weeks.

In this book, there is a chapter on how to strengthen one's core and how to connect one's lower extremeities with his/her upper extremeties through the core, which is really important in a sport like tennis because of all the constant rotations and movement on the court.
Aside from that, there are also great tips on injury prevention, nutrition, mental andtactical strategies, and recovering from an injury. So, as a tennis parent, I highly recommendthis book to all tennis players.

This book is a must-have for every tennis player. It covers all relevant topics of and gives you dozens of easy-to-follow exercises on how to keep the body in tip-top condition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFO
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK.TOO BAD THE TENNIS PROS AND TENNIS WRITERSHAVE APPARENTLY FAILED TO READ THIS.IF THEY HAD THEY WOULD STOP WRITING FICTION ABOUT TENNIS BALLS,STRING,AND RACQUETS.HOWEVER THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE PAID TO DO;IE SALE PRODUCTS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but very technical
This book was very helpful for me in deciding on what I should look for in a tennis racquet that would best suit my style and level of play.It also helped my understanding of how tight vs loose stringing affects the ball rebound off the racquet. In fact, I found myself at home watching one of Rafa Nadal's matches where he was consistently overhitting his shots and I thought to myself, his strings might be too loose.Amazingly, within a minute or so of my thinking this, Rafa went over and got another racquet!
The only downside for me was that I found myself skimming through certain parts of the book that were more technical and/or detailed than I liked.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to shop for a new tennis racquet or strings, and for those wanting a clearer understanding of HOW and WHY the physical properties of the racquet, strings, and court affect your shot-making.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real dissapoint
I am a physicist and play some tennis. I think this book won't help your tennis much.

I had the previous "physics and technology of tennis" by the same authors, and I felt this one is not an update of the previous book. It's more like a summary but the conclusion is for some reason different. For people who didn't read the big book, this book discusses the technical aspects of tennis and does not make much effort to connect these scientific facts to personal experiences and techniques. The advices which can be drawn from this book is surprisingly limited. Basically, choose a racquet you feel good when you are hitting the ball (instead of the air in a shop), and string doesn't really matter much. However, if you love tennis and is a noob in physics maybe this book can teach you something.

To be on the critical side, some of the conclusions in the book looks suspicious and are drawn without evidence. It claimed the ideal racquet weighs ~350 grams and toward head heavy. I think for the balance it would be way too heavy. The reason provided in the book is vague and imprecise. It also states that different string materials can be simulated by different tension of the same material without any obvious reason. The biggest dissapointment of all, in the book it very often states that there is an obvious discrepancy between the physics they describe and how pro players claim or feel, and they take the view that the feel is subjective and can be explained away. This view isn't half bad if you can offer sound objective scientific advice on how to achieve certain things, but all that remains in the book seems more like scientific trivia to me, which are all small (but true) facts here and there, sometimes subtle, but are never quite connected to how you play.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great low-tech intro
Despite the title, there are no equations and the technical details are all descriptive, but there's lots of useful information. A great first book to read on technical aspects of tennis. If the title suggests you will find hard numbers and research-level information here, you might be disappointed. Otherwise it's really a great book with lots of practical physics- and engineering-based
good advice on everything from racquets and balls to shots and serves, delivered at an almost non-technical level: think physics for poets!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly technical
Technical to a fault, but exacting. Provides interesting, sometimes counter-intuitive information, e.g., on how the tennis ball bounces, and how racquets really perform. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book at all
This is not a good book. First too many words without illustrative pictures. When I looked at some pictures, I found the setup for different stances illustrated by the author herself is so funny (it is not correct at all, especially her left hand motion). After that, I do not even want to continue to read this book. I do not recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good collection of drills for all situations.
Overall, this is a very good collection of tennis drills.Tina Hoskins covers tennis drills for numerous situations including: singles, doubles, group and children drills, competitive games, and even backboard drills. That is how she reaches the staggering number of 245 tennis drills.Given that most players have specific needs and desire associated with tennis drills, you will probably find only a small percentage of these drills useful. And, that is perfectly OK.

In my case, I am a former varsity college tennis player still hitting at the NTRP 4.5 level with a technical orientation to the game.I actually love challenging singles drills.Within this book, I actually found only 8 drills (3% of total drills) useful. But, these 8 drills include some of the most physically and technically challenging drills I ever came across. The most extreme drill is the one actually portrayed on the cover page.Frankly, if it was not for this book, I did not think this drill was possible. This is because it is composed of shots that are typically outright winners (passing shots down the line, and cross court volleys in the open court). In any case, I tried these 8 drills this past weekend. And, they worked. After an hour and half of intermittently doing these drills, and then just hitting around to catch our breath; We did all these drills, had a lot of fun, were more exhausted than usual, but hit the best we ever hit.I can see how if I keep the work up on these extreme-8s, my game and physical condition will reach the next level.

If you are a tennis coach teaching clinics, there are probably many more drills you will find useful within this book. But even if you are not, you may find the book very useful just like I did.The drills shown in the book, opens your mind and body to what is possible.Out of the drills shown, it is easy to tweak them a bit to your own needs. Thus, tennis drills becomes also a mental game of creativity.

The one drawback of the book is that a slight majority of the drills are explained without drawing.I think the book would have been more effective by concentrating on maybe the best 100 drills and illustrate all of them instead of 245 drills where only a minority of the drills is illustrated. But, overall this is still a valuable book on tennis drills. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
There is nothing wrong with this book, it was just not what I was looking for. I was looking for a book that might aid in the development of my table tennis game.I was looking for specific drills to improve my play and consistency.I would not recommend this book if this is what you are looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, as far as it goes
This is the best table tennis instructional book I ever read. But this isn't saying much considering this is just the second book I've read and the first was completely useless.

I can't remember the title of the first book but it used drawings to demonstrate strokes. The good thing about Winning Table Tennis is that it uses sequences of photographs which is much clearer in demonstrating how to hit a shot.

My biggest disappointment was that only about the first third of the book is about teaching table tennis techniques (strokes, footwork etc...).The rest of the book includes segments on warmups, losing weight, carbohydrates, proteins and workouts, which was not entirely relevant for most readers I would have thought...and certainly not the reason I bought the book.

Also, in illustrating strokes, any book has to realise that verbal descriptions are not that helpful.Instead, the heart and soul needs to be clear, comprehensive and sequential photographs. You can have a few words but these should not try to be comprehensive but rather just cover a few key points. This book only had photographs for some of the strokes, and the rest were completely written accounts - which wasn't good enough for me.

Last gripe.I know that the author Danny Seemiller is a very accomplished table tennis player, and I like his spunk in championing his own grip etc...but I thought the following sentence
"some elite playes, like J.O.Waldner and the author (Danny Seemiller), use sidespin bocks" was too self-serving and arrogant.I mean, sure he was no.17 in the world, but he was no Waldner.

I still gave it 3/5 because there really aren't enough table tennis books out there...and this was the best I've seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Intermediate even Advanced Players
If you're looking for a "Teach yourself Table Tennis 101" type of book, this is not the one. In fact, this book is targetting to most intermediate and advanced table tennis players, although it covers some basic materials and standard strokes in a couple of chapters.

Most players focus on improving their looping and attacking skills. However, the author kept emphasizing the effectiviness of enhancing the match results by practicing serves and improving footwork. He did a good job on the chapter about the serves. He explained all the key important placements of the serves for various siturations and effects. For the footwork techniques, the lateral two-step, the up-and-back two-step, the backhand-corner two-step, and the lateral crossover are all covered in pictorial step-by-step details. Readers can easily follow and practice. The author also gave out some tips on tournament tactics, like ball placement, the short game, and varying the spin. Overall the book is good except the chapters on conditioning drills are a bit basic and weak.

(Reviewed by Otto Yuen, 14-Jan-2006)

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for TT players who really want to win.
This book is for players who already know how to play TT. It doesn't include the TT rules. Ideal for intermediate-level players who want to progress up to "professional" level. This book describes all the major strokes and footwork. It's the only book that describes the various services both forehand and backhand. (Table Tennis from A to Z by Messinis contains only a cursory and theoritical examination of the services.). But the best part about this book is the one about how to shape up yourself for the tournament. The warm-up/warm-down exercises are great. The chapter on nutrition is excellent. The chapter on strategy is brilliant. Furthermore, the "tone" of this book is quite reader-friendly: it's like hearing the author speaking by your ears. In short, buy this book and I guarantee you'll never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to improve skills
As a new player this is the book to get. It does a great job describing the various skills of table tennis. It also tells you how to improve. Great book I am sure you will like if your serious about the game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing anything?
Cam Jansen with her photographic memory was the first one to notice that Mr. Day, the gym teacher, was missing one of his prize trophies. The cabinet was locked as was the door to his office.Without a key to enter these two things, who could have stolen the trophy? The mystery keeps Cam from concentrating on her work that day.She tried and tried to focus, until while doing one of her math problems the solution to the mystery became clear. She solved the case. Now to prove who it was and why.

Everyone loves a good mystery to solve.Using her photographic memory as a super sluth tool, Cam can solve almost any mystery.I recommend Cam Jansen and the Tennis Trophy Mystery to any earlier reader that loves a good who dunnit book.
