1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
The book is somewhat outdated, refers to freestyle as the "crawl stoke". Nothing is this book will help a first time coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information
This book is a great source of information and ideas for coaching swim.
Currently I coach on an age-group YMCA swim team and I am always looking for new ways to create effective practices. This book is written in an easy to search format and it gives examples that translate easily to 10 year olds!I recommend this book for age group swimming!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed reaction
This book had some nice ideas in it, but as a first time coach for young swimmers, this book was not terribly helpful to me, since the whole book is geared towards coaching adult swimmers. It covers just about everything else to do with coaching, but not in terrific detail. All in all, it's ok, it has good ideas in, and is probably good for a first book for an adult coach, but you will need more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I found this book to be very helpful to a first time coach for first-time-on-a-swim-team swimmers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for coaches
This is NOT a useful book for coaches, although it can be helpful for people without a coaching education or a good swimming background. Unfortunately, this book lacks every form of depth and I don't understand why all the reviews until now were extremely positive. Dick Hannula was a great coach, but this isn't a great book. I guess the readers were lead by pride instead of objectivity.
Coaching Swimming Successfully has an attractive title, but is somewhat misleading. While reading, you do get some new thoughts about coaching, but it will not make you a coach successfully.
The book is written with a first-person narrator and would be more interesting if it wasn't, since you will get annoyed after a while by every self-glorification of the writer and his successes. Besides, it's mainly focused on the American swimming school (planning and preparation, club swimming vs. high school swimming, yard pools, etc.) and it lacks some ability for extrapolation for other swimming countries.

The `Coaching Stroke Technique' part is redundant if you are a qualified coach and you still have your textbook from the course.

The book is easy to read, gives some new thoughts and can therefore help you coach more successfully, but it is too superficial and limited for a swimming coach. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal
This little book is great: up to date info, good pics, details, easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite so 4/5
Notice how the title of the book is "LP Diving AND SNORKELING Bonaire?"Well, let's just say that Tim needs to: 1) update the book - it's from 2006; and 2) get some additional info in here about the phenomenal snorkeling opportunities (or change the title.)I understand it's primarily a diving guide, and that's fine, but if you add the bit about snorkeling, well, then my expectation is that it will contain plenty of information about snorkeling opportunities. It doesn't.Nevertheless, I give kudos to a well done book because if you combine this info with the tourist guides/maps from Bonaire you'll find everything you need. The reality is that the Bonaire Tourist Center in downtown Kralendijk will have EVERYTHING that you need and it will do a better job of highlighting the snorkeling spots, and you'll save the $16 or whatever I paid for this book.

The bottom line:could be better, but works quite well as a supplemental guide book.Once you're in the water you'll understand why the dive sites are so popular.I happened to be pretty impressed with the snorkeling and IMHO, the book falls a bit short in that department. In case you're wondering, no - I don't dive. But you don't have to dive to appreciate the incredible marine life in the waters of Bonaire - it is an amazing place - and is by far the BEST snorkeling my wife & I have ever encountered.Forget Grand Cayman, or St. John, or Cozumel - I could live out the rest of my life on this underwater paradise.

Recommended, but you don't have to buy it since you can get everything that is inside the book elsewhere, for FREE.

3-0 out of 5 stars THE PHOTOS ARE NICE - DIVE DESCRIPTIONS COULD BE BETTER
I HAVE BEEN USING THE BONAIRE SHORE DIVING MADE EASY book for several years.I found the overall dive descriptions (shore entries, conditions, etc) to be better in this book than in the diving & snorkeling Bonaire book.

The diving & snorkeling Bonaire book also contains some misleading medical advice. For example - the Sea Urchin paragraph states that you should avoid contact with sea urchins (very true). It then states that you should treat by administering CPR until the pain subsides.Interesting advice!

The photos are the best part of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Far 2nd Place
This book comes in at a far away 2nd place to Susan Porter's "Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy""BSDME"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for shore diving
This book does have good descriptions on the various dive sites (shore and boat) in Bonaire - we read the summary the book had before our 25 dives last trip.Only thing that is lacking is some good overall Bonaire info, like resturants, places to stay, and map. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Swimming Drills for every Stroke by Ruben J. Guzman.
I learn swimming from The Total Immersion way(I bought books and DVDs and I was impressed.)I learned that all streamline, body rotaion etc....but I don't know the strokes well. Then I went to library to borrow this book.It helped me a lots.Basiclly the author's concept is pretty match to the TI way and he gave more details on the drills.Anyway, I like this book very much.So I bought the book and fellow the drills for my every day swimming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book herlped me in teaching swimming lessons and being a swim team coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginning swimming book
I was looking for a book for me to use to help teach my kids (5&7) to swim the various strokes. This book is absolutely perfect. It breaks down each stroke into individual components and allows your child to practice each portion before putting all the pieces together and swim the "real" stroke.I was trying for weeks to help my 7 year old with her breast stroke, then I got this book and saw a dramatic improvement in just one lesson. This book is perfect for a parent or a coach to help teach beginning swimmers how to correctly swim each stroke.

One piece of advice.Your child will never learn to swim well by doing lap after lap. They need specific instruction on how to execute each stroke, otherwise they will just reinforce bad habits.

One more thing, the other book I have is Total Immersion, which I think is great. However, you need a book like Guzman's to get the basics of each swimming stroke.I do some of the drills in TI, but I need Guzman too.Plus, TI only talks about freestyle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old fashioned
This books seems to be directed at beginning swimmers. It's too basic for more experienced swimmers.Addtionally, many of the drills seem a bit dated.I may be a little biased since I am an advocate of the the Total Immersion style of swimming.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic for the Common Coach
Though fundamentally strong, this book is extremely simplistic.Anyone who considers themselves a somewhat experienced coach should bypass this title and begin looking elsewhere for a decent drill guide/idea book. ... Read more

It is interesting how people can write a review this book 3 years prior to it being published. I guess these reviews refer to the fist edition published in July 94.

A great reference for learning how to manage the water in your pool.

4-0 out of 5 stars COmplete Swimming Pool Reference
Although I found the book to be somewhat outdated, it is clear and consise and easy to read. I am not a pool "expert" as some of the reviewers are, I am new to the pool business and in that regard i found itvery helpful.Remember, this is a refence book published a while ago andpool "standards" continue to change.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best swimming pool reference book I've ever owned.
I've been in the pool biz for twenty five years and this is the only pool related book I've read that didn't put me to sleep. It's clear, concise, and very understandable for people at ALL levels.

The pool business is atough, comprehensive subject and Tom Griffith has done a masterful job attackling all the issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I didn't get all the way through it, but this was a great first guide. My daughter did everything they said she would. I would recommend it (and have) to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
I bought this book as a gift for my sister who is expecting a baby anyday now. I used the older version of this book to teach our nephew how to swim. We started when he was only 4 months old and did the things in the book in addition to a local swimming class focused on water enjoyment. If I could do anything differently I would have started even younger! He loves the water, and sometimes cries when we leave the pool. The book provides a lot of information to assure parents and caregivers that swimming is a safe and natural activity for babies. Not only is the step by step instruction and reassurance easy to follow, the photos cannot be beat! My sister is looking forward to using the book with her new baby, particularly because she knows about the positive experience I had with our nephew. I recommend this book to any parent or caregiver that wants to be actively involved in introducing their child to the water and swimming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
Don't let the size of this book fool you! I wasn't sure what book to buy to learn about teaching my baby to swim, but I'm so glad I picked this one. The photos are absolutely beautiful and the book is quality enough to place on a coffee table. I was greatly inspired. The exercises are simple and clearly explained. I was able to remember many of them after only skimming it when I took my baby to the pool for the first time - which, thanks to this book, went much better than I expected. My five month old took to the water very well. The author also clearly stated many safety issues to be aware of - for which I was very thankful.

This is a great book. I highly recommend it. ...even if you only buy it for the pictures!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How-To Book
This book is conversational yet concise, and packed with important information for how to safely swim with your baby from newborn into toddlerhood. The many photo illustrations are detailed, clear and beautiful. The author answers important frequently asked questions about water safety and learning to swim. After reading this book and viewing the images, I feel confident taking my 4-month-old into the water for his first swim, and being able to expand his lessons if he likes it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than you ever wanted to know
If you're used to PADI textbooks with glossy photos or summarized explanations about why certain diving rules hold true, you will be slightly overwhelmed. This is an in-depth discussion of the art and science of breathing underwater.
As you may know, Tom Mount is the founder and current CEO of IANTD which is slowly surpassing TDI as the predominant certifying body of technical diving. His work is backed by the experience of thousands of dives and the lessons from a few mistakes that he discusses candidly in his book (i.e. on-site DCS treatment, what happens when you dive REALLY deep on air).I have read several books on the subject, to include my training manuals and Mount and Gilliam's work is one of the most comprehensive without getting into advanced physiology.
What impressed me the most was the holistic approach they take to diving. They go as far as to discuss the process of aerobic cellular respiration, what it's like to visit a hyperbaric chamber, how to ready a patient on your boat for helicopter rescue and reference yogis and Buddhist monks in proper breathing and relaxation techniques to improve air consumption and reduce CO2 absorption. The information about rebreathers and dive computer technology is a little dated, but their discussion of the development and history of decompression tables (Buhlman, VPM, etc.) that today's modern computers are based on is still relevant. The chapters on gas blending, equipment setup and selecting the best mix for a given depth and duration are readable and offer "plug-in" formulas and practical exercises with an answer key in the back.
As with any diving activity, no one should ever undertake a practice they are not trained for, but understanding this book before you receive your training will further your comprehension of topics your instructor may only skim over or avoid discussing.

4-0 out of 5 stars In depth overview of Mixed Gas Diving
Mixed Gas Diving looks primarily at the use of exotic gas mixes for diving the extremes. There is a useful chapter on Nitrox for recreational divers, as well as good information on Trimix for those delving a little deeper. The book is comprehensive and explores breathing techniques and the physiologicial effects of different gases.Slightly dated now by new rebreather teechnologies, the book is excellent reading for aspirant Nitrox divers and those already using this gas mix.Required reading for Technical Divers. Product Description
Award-winning poet Kristine O"Connell George, author of several successful picture books, now turns her attention to the middle school experience. The first year brings an array of challenges: making new friends, moving from class to class, tests and homework, changing for PE, gossip, school dances, and, of course, budding romance. Short, accessible poems in a variety of forms, but all in a single voice—that of a new middle schooler—evoke the memorable moments of the school year, exploring situations and emotions that will resonate with preteens. Lively illustrations complement this perceptive, humorous, poignant record of an important transitional year. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Angst and Recovery
I've purchased this book twice. I purchased it last year because my daughter needed a book of poetry for a reading class assignment. Both she and I found it a perfect read, not only for her assignment, but also because it spoke to her feelings as a new middle schooler. My second purchase was as a gift for a friend of my daughter's who is an avid reader, though I don't know how she feels about poetry. (I guess we'll know soon.) The book is so current that I'm confident that she'll enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry Worth Reading!
"Swimming Upstream" is a wonderful book filled with poems about 7th grade. It tells how 7th grade really is. How you go to a bigger school, have your own locker, home room, surviving the lunchroom, etc. I think kids will really enjoy this because it relates to them. I really liked this book. Everything these poems describe is true. This is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!!
I really liked this book even though I'm a guy and it's about a girl. Some of the same stuff has happened to me in middle school as in the pomes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Transition to Middle School Captured in Verse
The book may not qualify as great poetry, but it does a good job of showing the point of view of a child enduring the sometimes frightening, difficult, and at times even exhilarating transition to middle school.Sixth graders (or kids in the first year of middle school) are likely to really connect with the short poems in this book.It is easy to read and appealing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More Than JustBeautiful Photographs of Pools
Martha Baker's THE SWIMMING POOL is a coffee table book of some of the most beautiful pool around the world, but it is much more than that.Written with an easy style but always a poignant conciseness that makes every paragraph count, this book gives visual and conceptual ideas for creating the home swimming pool.

Baker is careful not to just limit the text and photographs to the water container in which the swimming takes place: Baker gives as much attention to the logistics of pool layout, landscaping, lighting, and vantage points that make the pool an integral part of the landscape and garden.

Whether the reader is actually planning the addition of a swimming pool to the home, or is more interested in viewing the myriad possibilities of adding water to the garden, this book is an elegant and satisfying resource - as well as a beautifully designed art piece!Grady Harp, June 06

2-0 out of 5 stars Pools that belong on the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
I am so disappointed that I wasted my money on this book. I had hoped for the amount of money spent that it would have had practical ideas for how to landscape around an average pool.Unfortunately, it is more of a coffee table book that shows glamourous pictures of pools from international locations. The majority of the landscaping tips it does give cover extravagant and costly enhancements and not anything that someone with a normal budget could afford. For an average pool owner, with an average pool, this book does not give any practical advice whatsoever.Furthermore, in the opening pages of the book the author cautions against buying a kidney-shaped pool because she feels they are old-fashioned and reminiscent of the 50's and 60's.To me, it seemed very pretentious to say.We have a kidney-shaped pool and it's absolutely beautiful, as are other kidney-shaped pools I've seen.If you're looking for a book where you can "ooh and ahhh" over the pictures... this one is it.If you're looking for a practical book to help you landscape around your pool, please save your money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars OK coffee table book
Nice book with a fair number of pictures. The book can't decide if it is a travel advisory book or a coffee table book, and so misses on being great in either category. To be truly outstanding coffee table book, it would need more full page high quality photos. To be a truly outstanding travel advisory, it need more text and more opportunities for contact of dive operations/activities at each location. In the end, I found it to be a better coffee table book than a travel guide as many locations (that I have been to) had numerous omissions of services and local activities.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun book for a cold day
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it cover to cover within 2 days. It's a fast read. Each dive site gets about a 2 and 1/2 page description (some destinations get slightly more) with a dive expert giving a brief vignette on some of the highlights they have encountered at the site. The sites range from novice-friendly to much more complicated (for example, the first site listed is in Antarctica... not exactly luxury warm weather diving!!), but there is enough here to entertain divers of all levels.

If you are looking for an in depth analysis of a dive site, this probably isnt the right book for you. The descriptions are just too brief to use the book for that purpose. But if you're just looking for ideas... or if you have a particular large sea creature you are dying to sea (i.e. mola molas, humpbacks, various shark species), the book does a good job of pointing out places where you are more-likely to encounter them. It also hits on dive spots where the macro life is the highlight.

In response to one other's reviewers comments about not having a Red Sea or a Cuba destination, that comment is inaccurate. The Red Sea destination mentioned is Sha'ab Rumi, a location off the coast of Sudan. The author recommends a live aboard boat for this trip. For Cuba, the author recommends Jardines de la Reina, though he cautions US citizens who travel there that they do so at their own risk.

All in all, a fun book to read on a chilly winter day with a cup of coffee and a tired dog asleep at your feet (at least that's how I did it!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expertly written
The word "California" conjures up all manner of images from sun-drenched beaches to Hollywood - rarely making one think of the offshore islands that have so very much to offer the visiting Scuba Diver.

"Diving Offshore California" measures 10" x 7" and is another guide in the medium size format favoured by Aqua Quest. These particular publishers set high standards and demand all contributing authors/photographers maintain those standards at all times. This is, therefore, another worthy addition to the series.

The book is well laid out thus ensuring every page has the right mix of written information and visually informative colour photographs or maps. Commencing with an overview of the past and the present, the book then goes on to include all that useful information required by any potential visitor - weather, access boat diving, preservation, visibility, photography, currents and much more besides. We are then treated to a map of California showing the location of the offshore islands roughly situated between Santa Barbara and San Diego. The next 13 chapters are then dedicated to each of the featured islands - and one of them even includes diving around oil-rig platforms. A total of over 90 individual dive sites are included and each of these contains all the information the potential visitor will wish to know.

With a final chapter devoted to Marine Life, the book then concludes with a number of Appendices containing that all-important emergency information and useful numbers such as Charter Boats and Dive Centres.

Altogether, this book contains all the information the potential visitor will require for contemplating such a trip. My only criticism is reserved for a couple of the photographs which are not quite sharp enough and might be replaced at the next re-printing stage.

Product Description
This edition to the successful Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guides will introduce the rapidly-growing sport of scuba diving, the fastest growing segment of which is women. Sport diving, or scuba (an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus), is more than a summer activity; for many people. It is a prime motivator for traveling to exotic destinations. Diving appeals to all ages and levels of fitness, and its allure has much to do with its social aspect: one always dives with a buddy, with groups of other divers, and at least in the beginning stages, accompanied by a dive instructor or divemaster. Claire Walter, a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI)-certified advanced diver, addresses women's issues in everything from getting started and diving basics to advanced diving. As with other titles in the series, she weaves women's voices into the narrative to provide a range of assuring experiences. Among topics covered are overcoming one's fears, choosing the right instructor, equipment, your first dive, and expanding your horizons. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars wish it were more 'woman' specific
The book covers diving areas well for beginner's.There is some specific guidance for women regarding equipment but more in depth coverage in this area would have been helpful. The weight of the tank can be a large issue for middle aged women who are not in the best shape.

However, the book does hit on some good points for women.

4-0 out of 5 stars Answers Beginner's Questions
At the beginning, Scuba diving is full of mysteries. The equipment, thephysiology, the underwater world all seem complicated. This book sorts outwhat beginners need to know--especially women who approach new sportsdifferently than men. I'd recommend this for any woman starting to dive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for people in love with the sport
This book covers in detail panic in scuba diving, gives you techniques on how to spot the panic prone diver, and it teaches you ways on how to recognize problems before you hit the water. In addition, the book explains how divers can recognize key elements of anxiety before they lead to panic reactions in yourself and others. I recommend this book to dive masters and dive instructors, it will become an invaluable tool.
