4-0 out of 5 stars I hope no one actually tries this!
This book is full of practical and useful information. It is obvious that McAvoy has a lot of valuable experience. However, his style of writing injected a lot of his own personality into the work, which I found to be distracting.I got tired of hearing about Izavbell, and her name so unusual as to detract from what McAvoy is trying to convey. And I was a bit taken aback when McAvoy advises the reader already in chapter 1 that he or she should 'try to hit someone in the face unexpectedly with your fist' to prove a point about instincts.I hope no one actually tries this! But if you are looking for a decent book about soccer and not a great work of literature, this one is for you.McAvoy shares a lot of great drills and games to keep any team occupied for a full season!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for new and experienced coaches!
I have no sports background but have been coaching U8 soccer for several seasons.I moved up to U9 boys and have been looking for a book to explain more about the fundamentals of soccer and provide drills to teach them. This book emphasizes teaching soccer fundamentals including the push pass, instep kick, moves, and tactics. It also gives you drills that emphasize each skill in gradual progression. In 2 practices, my guys could do a decent instep kick!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach the game
Regardless of whether you know the game, if you want to learn more about how to teach the game, this is the book for you.I grew up playing, but starting coaching was a struggle to get the kids to understand -- until I bought this book 2 years ago.I still recommend it, and I still use it.This shows you what skills to start with and how to progress as the kids catch on.With the philosophies and games in this book you can keep the attention of your team for many many practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the thoughtful youth soccer coach
Nelson McAvoy is a former rocket scientist who coaches youth soccer. He has thought and learned a lot about HOW kids learn to play soccer, and in this book he tells you about it clearly, entertainingly, and compellingly.

I don't have his experience in coaching kids in the 9-11 year-old range, but I still found the book invaluable, because now I know what I can and can't expect to accomplish with younger kids. I also understand how important it is to be a teacher, and how it can hurt the kids' development if you just "let them play" without introducing the right skills when they are ready to acquire them. Any coach who reads this book and doesn't become that kind of teacher for kids in that critical 9-11 year age group must not have been paying attention!

This one is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to get out there and use this!
Nelson McAvoy briefly coached my sister, and was one of the best even back in the '70s.Every word in this book resonates with the experiences ofwhat works and what doesn't.You'll learn just how much learning to mix inwith the right amount of fun, and the book is chock full of drills thatwill train the players to act like a soccer player without thinking aboutit.I just know when I get out there on the field armed with this bookthat the kids are going to enjoy it enough to sign up next year, and aregoing to learn the game without realizing it because they're having ablast. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not extremely useful
Although this book has some unique activities in it, I haven't been overly impressed so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Both Elite and Non-Elite Players
I bought this book with the intent of getting some new ideas to help develop my team into elite players, and it has been fairly useful.

Pros:
- Every drill includes the purpose, organization, procedure, key points to look for and coach, AND VARIATIONS!
- Each drill includes a clear (albeit sometimes complex)diagram
- Exercises for problem areas like "finishing"
- Includes drills to develop technical skills (shooting, dribbling, etc) and other drills to develop physical skills (speed, agility, etc)

Cons:
- There are only 83 drills in the book in total
- While there are many drills that would be useful for almost anybody, as the book is designed for "elite" players, many of the drills are very complex.

Definitely not a "starter" book, but useful for coaches with older, more disciplined teams; or coaches needing stimulation to develop their own drills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sports Lovers Dream Book ! !
If your daughter loves sports she will love this book !My 6th grade twin daughters and their friends have read the book numerous times and loved it.

In this day and age it is hard to find good sports books for girls. This one is awesome! The book has great sports action. It also has wonderful, real, school kid situations, stories and dialogue. The fast paced conversations between Tess and her friends are funny, witty and sounds like real kids do today.

I think the School Library Journal and BookList reviews hit it right on the head.It is a great book that teaches kids lessons in life about perserverance, fighting for good causes and how to get involved in issues that affect the community, like getting a levy passed.

There is lots of good sports for the girl athletes, but every girl, jock or not, can learn lessons about standing up for your rights and working together with others for the good of all.

I'd give this book TEN STARS if Amazon would let me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Gratuitous sexual references
We bought this book as a gift for our fifth-grade daughter who is a soccer fanatic. The publisher reviews indicated that the audience was "girl-jocks" and that the book sends an important message to any girl with a passion or a cause. When we received the book, we flipped through it and it seemed okay. Then, when I was about to wrap the gift, I happened to flip open to Chapter 11 which spends a few pages describing Tess's classmates' Halloween costumes -- pushup-bra wearing/belly baring/barely dressed angels; a mammogram machine with instructions; someone with condoms stuck to his sweats. The Halloween discussion was supposed to be funny, I suppose, but there wasn't any point, and it's not something my soccer-loving daughter needs to read right now. And it certainly didn't add to any "important message." There may be other such references in the book, but I didn't check. We're sending the book back. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book for collage and high school coaches
The entire book is filled with all kinds of drills (most of them are very creative but there are some that are imposable to acheive or exsecute; there are few drills that I would not recommend to a coach). If you're nota coach this book is NOT for you!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Another pattern book of soccer drills.

This book is similar in concept to the book "Dutch Soccer Drills Vol.I" by Richard Kentwell, which I also reviewed. The fundamental comments and criticisms that I made in that review about training for soccer by running such rigid patterns apply to this book as well. This book also does not have hardly anything in the way of tips on basic techniques for ball control.

There are several reasons why I give this book a slightly higher rating: First, the diagrams of the drills are more simply laid out and are easier to understand - and so if your soccer training philosophy actually includes running such rigid pattern drills, this book might actually be a useful guide for such training. Second, many of the diagrams simply describe how to lay out a simple "skill" type of drill to practice a particular type of skill, rather than running a complex pattern drill.Third, the book has some interesting comments about how the ODP (Olympic Development Program) selection process is run (at least by Schmidt et al in his region).Fourth, the commentary accompanying each drill is better written and tells you what each drill is actually supposed to teach. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars For experienced U14+ Coaches only!
If you're an expert coach with a team of skilled U14 or older players, you may find value in this book. The diagrams are detailed, explanations and tips are minimal and overall it has not proved to be helpful to me in coaching my u10 travelling team. The restart chapter in Alan Hargreaves' indispensable "Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer" proved to be much more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for advanced players
A "must-have" for every soccer coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Championship book
This book was a tremedous resource for our team this year. It made the difference in our set pieces and gave the players confidence in executing them. Everytime we were awarded a free kick or corner kick the players truly saw it as an opportunity to score - and very often we did. Easy to understand and useful diagrams.

Product Description
There are few things that unify people across the world better than the game of soccer. More than just kicking a ball about, soccer stirs passions beyond rational thought, affecting the mood of a nation or even the fortunes of a government. Since the 1930s various members of Magnum have photographed the world of soccer, documenting the teams, the supporters and the game, from barefeet on African mud or a Brazilian beach to kicking cans in the backstreets of Newcastle. This collection shows how deep the roots of soccer run and how wide they are spread, how soccer culture crosses every boundary of nationality, race and religion, how it throws up important social issues such as the empowerment of women through soccer in Iran and the bitter religious rivalry between Glasgow’s two teams Rangers and Celtic. This portfolio of images combines the beauty of the game itself with the aesthetic quality associated with the photographers of Magnum and provides a celebration of the ‘world game’ as well as a fascinating social portrait of the world over a period of more than half a century. ... An absolutely beautiful collection of about 200 black and white and color photographs celebrating the global sport known as football. Since its founding by a collective of photojournalists in the '40s Magnum has been one of the world's premier photo agencies, so it's not surprising that their archives have yielded such an array of compelling photos of the beautiful game. Few of the photos are of the high level world or professional ranks, rather they are of regular players and fans in the grimy cities, dusty villages, and muddy pitches of the world. Some are action shots, some are posed, some are impressionistic-but all are a tribute to the simplest of sports. Sure to delight devotees of either football or photography, it's an attractive and inexpensive collection that deserves wide readership. ... Read more

This book, and the other Dutch Soccer Drills book is full of drills, that if you are interested in running them from a coaching perspective, involve a lot of "pattern" play and running. As a competitive level youth coach I personally only use only a handful of drills from these books, and mostly the small-sided games, which do not constitute a large part of this book.Drills where players pass from one position to the next, move, then do some function are good conditioning exercises for the beginning of practices, but they are robotic and repetition oriented and really have limited use training players to make good decisions during games.Stick to the Weil Coerver series for skill development and then keep practices to 2 vs 2, 3 v. 3, 3 v 4 small games for the best development of youths.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complicated Drills
I found most of the drills to be quite complicated and difficult to implement on the field.I did find some useful drills and others may become more useful in the future as I coach upper age groups, up to U-12right now.But the time lost explaining the drills and setting them up isbetter spent on less complex drills with more ball touches per player.Ialso prefer small sided games to allow the game to teach the players.

5-0 out of 5 stars It it a lot of fun.
This book gives you a lot of ideas for you and your team to do. It really helped my soccer skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars So many good drills I can't begin to use them all!
For a coach desiring to teach skills to individuals, small groups, or team drills, this book has it all.As a newcomer to the game three years ago, but a former coach of other High School level sports, I found this bookjam-packed with useful drills. It can be beneficial to everyone from a U-6coach to the High School level.Thewide variety of drills addressing somany different skills, allows me to keep my practices fun and fresh for myteam.I can't comment from the viewpoint of an experienced soccer coach, but from my perspective of coaching youth teams for 3 years, it was easilythe best spent money of the year for my team.Any coach wanting to teachhis/her team new skills in a fun and organized way should really take alook at this one.It even prompted me to invent two or three new drills ofmy own that the team (U-10) loves to practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for 15 to 17 years old advanced players.
I have had this book for a year and I have found it to be extremely useful. To get most out of this book, players should have good talent level and they should have got used to long-term practicing. This book is goodhandbook when creating an own playing system or way to play. It isexcellent handbook, when planning own practices - it gives new ideas and itmay be used as the base of all coaching work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and available for less than the sellers here offer it
I can only echo the other reviews and state that this is one of the best books for coaches out there. This is the one book I'd keep if I had to toss out all of the other soccer books on my shelf. You don't have to pay the thirty bucks or more charged here. It's still available from Reedswain for much less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Future of Coaching
I've only coached men's college teams, but I'm convinced Anson's principles represent a foundation for the future of coaching -- for athletes of either sex. Competition is fun and practices need to be fun. The days of drill sergeant as coaching model are over.

Kids from most countries now have hundreds of choices in terms of different sports and entertainment. Every minute of practice needs to be fun or they'll do something else. And it's only going to get worse.

Obviously the "competitive caldron" can create women's US college soccer champions (UNC won the title again in 2000), but it may also be our best chance to lure the upcoming Sega generation into team sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent soccer ideas for all soccer coaches
This book is an excellent guide for ways to develop your soccer team and take them to a new level. This is more for advanced coaches, but I think beginning coaches can utilize these techniques also.Covers great program building techniques for youth boys and women of all levels.Great resource for all soccer coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best coaching bug I have read
I am not a soccer coach. This book was recommended to me by a volleyball coaching mentor. He recommended it and said it was the best coaching book he had ever read.... I agree.

There is not doubt why Anson Dorrance isone of the best soccer coaches in the world. His insights into successwith female athletes is extremely helpful and I recommend this book toanyone who wants to be a better coach, period. ... Read more

Product Description

Never has Diego Maradona’s extraordinary story been told in his own words—until now.  A poor boy from a Buenos Aires shantytown, Maradona’s genius with a soccer ball took him to the heights of South American, European, and world soccer. Here the greatest player of his generation, and perhaps of all time, tells his tale: the pressures of being a child prodigy, the infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup, his roller coaster seasons in Italy’s top league, and the disgrace of his positive drug test at the 1994 World Cup. In this amazingly honest autobiography, he reveals the truth about his fame, his talent, and his weaknesses. It makes for dramatic reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History
Add your collection item with this stuff. It is one of greatest autograph from footballer of the century. He not only told about when he on the top level but also when he fallen down into drugs addiction and how he trying fight against his self. This book also complete with some of color pictures including with his childhood until his retirement period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
If you are interested in Maradona, read this book.Plenty of stuff I hadn't known before.

5-0 out of 5 stars very quick service and good quality
the book I purchased arrived quickly although I only use the starndard shipping. The book is also in very good quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Diego.
I have always been a fan of Maradona.I have yet to witness someone as good with the ball.Diego can invent, dance and make things happen with a ball.Tis auto biography is special because it is crafted from the master himself. He goes back to his childhood as poor as it was and one sees the struggle children like him faced everyday not only to play soccer but to live.Diego is straight to the point in this book...hence you meet with his emotions, his anger, his joys in football and family life. After all he is not only a football god but most importantly....a human being.I am a great england supporter but i will admire Maradona forever for his contribution to world soccer.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Great Contradiction that is Maradona
Explosive, confrontational, arrogant, unapologetic, with no holds barred. What else to expect from the controversial Diego Armando Maradona. This is an autobiography in the purest sense of the word.A journey into the extremes and excesses of a God-given talent who took on the world and won...and lost...and moved on.The subject matter himself is a fascinating read.Any football junkie would want to know how he grew to be such a talent that he is.Who were his football heroes? What was going on in his head when he committed the 'hand of God'.

And yet there are areas where he only skims the surface - his drug addiction, his womanizing.Maradona wants this autobiography to be first and foremost about his love affair with soccer, and his trials and tribulations in navigating the politics of the game. I'm not too sure if this paints a complete picture of the man.

What I do admire about Maradona in this book is his numerous recollections of the little guys - those otherwise unsung individuals who at various points in his life had touched him and made a difference.Despite being the most sought after player during his heydays, and among the richest and most powerful footballer in the world, Maradona has vivid details of his encounters and speaks of them with the highest regard.

Perhaps in typical fashion, Maradona sets out to defy convention - don't try to put him in a box.You just cannot define the man with a single label. It is as Maradona says at the end "I'm me, Maradona.I am El Diego'

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of material, but quite british oriented...
The book provides a lot of material about the history of soccer and their major tournaments. However I consider it too british oriented with long descriptions about England teams and European competitions...

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Soccer
I bought this for my grandson, who is FANATICAL about footy.I'm really pleased with the book, it will make a great Christmas present

4-0 out of 5 stars It was a good book for people who know nothing about football
I just got this book because it talked about the basics of football and what you need to know. Famous players, past matches, World Cup, etc. Being American my knowledge was very limited on the subject so a book like this fills in some info. Nothing in detail really just casual 'need to know' knowledge. If you really want a great history of football book you should read, "The Ball Is Round" by David Goldblatt. Its like reading a textbook on football and if you are into very detailed oriented books on the subject this is the one book you want to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great chelsea??????
I am an Arsenal supporter and saw this book in the bookstore.Arsenal( 13 titles) gets a few paragraphs and Chelsea( 3) gets a whole page? I laughed at the stretch the author had to go through to fill up the page. Chelsea a team that had not won a title in 50 years until the team, badly in debt, was bought by a Russian billionaire that received his wealth through highly dubious means. He then proceeds to buy a title by spending hundreds of millions of pounds of players. What a great club!!! A team that does not develop its own players, but spends millions on established stars and has done irreparable harm to more than one career( Shevchenko is probably the best example) Good job.I would highly suggest another book

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
