5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I picked up this book at the local library, and now I plan to buy it. Claire really knows her topic! My only quibble with the book (2nd edition) is that in a few places she didn't delete information from the 1st edition, but merely superimposed a black box saying "trail closed" or "this restaurant is now closed". This is somewhat bizarre, and might be an editing/production error. In any case, this is a valuable guide that I want on my bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Guidebook
I own a lot of summer and winter trail guides, and this is one of the best. It's quality and quantity, with dozens of trails all over the state, and also tours, races and even a few tips on cool places to eat and stay.It has maps showing the trailhead locations, but I wish it had topos too.Oh well, you can't have everything--and topos are the only thing missinghere. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars lotta history~
I got this from a friend was gonna get my own but really there wasn't much how to or don'ts. just lots of history. I was hoping for more modern shoes with equipment explanation.

4-0 out of 5 stars godd review of snowshoeing
This was a good review of the history of snowshoeing, types of shoes, why you might want to pick one type over another.Gives you a feeling that you are living out the increasing popularity of the sport and technologic advancements in types of shoes and gear.Compares climate, snow conditions, terrain in various parts of the country.Good tips on preparedness for being outdoors in various conditions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absurd
This is the worst Mountaineers book I own. The information inside is completely outdated and useless. It concentrates on gear for 3/4 of the book (outdated gear) and gives little useful information. If you are looking for a book on the history of snowshoes, look no further. If you are looking for useful information try elsewhere. I'm usually too lazy to review most books, but this was just that horrible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written
This well written book covers snowshoeing in depth (techniques, shoe and binding options, racing, history, and more) and related topics (winter camping, snow shelters, winter clothing, winter safety, winter route finding, and more). An experienced winter camper or snowshoer won't find too much that is new, but will no doubt get some fresh ideas from reading this book. For someone new to snowshoeing and winter camping, the book is recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars The first best book, but ...
Gene Prater was one of the leaders of the "modern" snowshoe movement. He and his brother developed Sherpa Snowshoes, the first aluminum frame, decked snowshoe. Today the market is just full of the offspring of Sherpas. When Gene passed away in 1993, his family passed on the book to Dave Felkley, a Colorado snowshoe instructor and guide. Dave has done a really good job at retaining Gene's original material, and updating it as needed. There is an exceptional chapter on snowshoeing history, which the Praters were such a big part of. It's a bit weak on "traditional" (or as Gene called them, "eastern", calling his own design "western") wood and web snowshoes, but never-the less it is a book that should be on any serious snowshoer or winter camper's shelf. ... Product Description
The ancient, elegantly useful snowshoe has taken the outdoor sports scene by storm. With sales of snowshoes more than doubling every year this decade, snowshoeing rivals its trendy cousin snowboarding as the fastest growing winter sport in the United States. In this indispensable guide, avid snowshoer Larry Olmsted enumerates the many reasons for snowshoeing's meteoric rise. Advances in design and construction--including quick-entry, high-performance bindings--have made snowshoes even easier and more enjoyable to use. Scores of enthusiasts are hitting groomed cross-country ski and snowmobile trails across the snowbelt, running on scaled-down versions of traditional 'shoes. Snowshoeing explains how to experience this recent evolution of the sport. Even greater numbers of snowshoers come from the ranks of America's hikers and backpackers, who have discovered that wintertime can be the best time to hit the trail: no bugs, no mud, no crowds. And backcountry Alpine skiers and snowboarders climb to their summits on snowshoes, the most reliable, versatile mode of travel across snow. No new use or technique is left untreated in this, the first guide to snowshoeing since snowshoeing has come of age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, accurate and beautifully written
The best outdoor guides I've ever read. This book targets the recreational snowshoer who might do strenuous day hikes, but doesn't attempt to be a detailed manual for the fanatic spending a week snow camping.IMHO, the book succeeds admirably in meeting the needs of its target audience. It covers all the basics - gear, clothing, the few elements of technique required for snowshoeing, and safety. The prose is very accessible, the pictures add a lot of warmth to the text, and there's even a chapter on snowshoe running. The author captures the feel of the snowshoes rather well and I often found myself nodding my head in agreement with the tips for climbing, descending and traversing that I had to learn by hard experience.I live in California and usually snowshoe in much warmer weather (mid-30s F) than the northeast or midwest, so the clothing suggestions are way too conservative for me - but that's the only fault I could find with the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars There Are Better Snowshoe Books Out There
You can lump most of the newer snowshoe books together, and they are, ho hum, all about the same, that is not very good. They seem to be written by people that claim to be experts about everything to do with the outdoors, but I am not impressed with their knowledge of snowshoes or snowshoeing. "Hey everybody, lets go out and spend $300 on little dinky plastic and aluminum snowshoes, because it is THE thing to do", seems to be the battle cry of all these people. They always fill their books with lots of pictures of people climbing mountains, in attempt to impress us I guess. This is really impractical for a beginner, who is the real targeted audience for these books. The exception to this is the snowshoe book, "The Essential Snowshoer" recently written by Zwosta and even better the oldie "The Snowshoe Book" by Osgood and Hurley. These are better books, that explain the sport better, both past and present.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great beginners snowshoeing book

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an exciting story about Milton Daub, a "kid hero" who ventured out in the Great Blizzard of `88 to help his neighbors!
Ablizzard began to rage over the Northeastern United States in March of 1888.Little did anyone know that this massive storm would rage for three days. The "snow and ice buried the land from Maine to Maryland," yet the most amazing and frightening thing was that "thousands of birds fell frozen from bushes and buildings where they had huddled for shelter."Soon all communication was cut off and people in need of food and medicine were unable to travel from their homes.Trains were stranded and "waves damaged countless boats and sank more than two hundred of them," but there was a sharp witted, twelve-year-old boy in the Bronx named Milton Daub who was not one to be deterred by the Great Blizzard of `88.

School had been cancelled and because of the dangerous storm no one could go out.The Daub family of seven was safe, but Milton's mother said, "I do wish I had milk for the baby."Milton offered to go out, but his father quickly said, "Don't be foolish, Milton! You'd be buried out there."There were pictures of snowshoes in his geography book and he convinced his father to help him make some. His father tied a rope around his waist just in case he sank into the snow. The cold was brutal. . ."BRRRRR!"Milton pulled a sled, carefully taking note of landmarks so he wouldn't get lost on the way to Mr. Ash's grocery store. His mission was successful, but there were many more people that could use the help of this young, daring boy. Would he be up to the monumental task that lay ahead of him?Would he be able to help those people who so desperately needed food, milk, and medicine?

This is an exciting story about Milton Daub, a "kid hero" who ventured out in the Great Blizzard of `88 to help his neighbors.I quickly found myself immersed in a truly fascinating graphic novel that will inspire many people, young and old alike. There was enough introductory information to entice the young reader to plow into this great adventure. The tension and urgency of the situation was quickly evident, but Milton's only concern was to help out his family. The task soon went beyond his family and he had to make a decision to help others in need. The artwork was clean, crisp, and caught the subtle emotional expressions on the faces of the stranded neighbors. This is an excellent way for a young reader to learn a bit of history in an action-packed book with none other than a kid hero! ... "Rockland isn't just 'observing' America objectively, he's in it, all the way, fighting the old clichés with jokes and insights about everything he sees and about himself. It's a very refreshing book."--Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"Rockland is one of the most exuberant men on earth and a raconteur of genius, and those qualities enliven every chapter, every sentence, every step of the way. Snowshoeing through Sewers is both funny and wise, and a damn good travelog to boot! One of the most unusual and entertaining books I've read in a long, long time."--Tom De Haven, author of Freaks' Amour and Funny PapersIn these ten alternately poetic and comic tales of adventure in the New York/Philadelphia corridor, the most densely populated chunk of America, Rockland walks and bikes areas meant only for cars and paddles through waters capable of dissolving canoes. He hikes the length of New York's Broadway, camps in New York City, treks across Philadelphia, pedals among the tractor trailers of Route 1 in New Jersey, and paddles around Manhattan and through the dark tunnels under Trenton.Whereas Henry David Thoreau built his cabin on Walden Pond to get out of town, for Rockland, the challenge is to head into town. As he writes, "in the late twentieth century, a weed and trash-filled city lot . . . may be a better place than the wilderness to contemplate one's relationship to nature."Michael Aaron Rockland is a professor of American Studies at Rutgers University. His many books include Looking for America on the New Jersey Turnpike (Rutgers University Press) and a novel, A Bliss Case. ... Read more

I was assigned this book back in 1998 when I took Prof Rockland's Urban Adventure course at Rutgers University one summer.I always got very nervous when the professor assigned a book that (s)he wrote. Was I pleasantly surprised!I was inspired, I was in awe of the adventures.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get insprired to take an urban adventure - just walk out your door, and explore your hometown, see what you discover!
