Product Description
When author Michael Jeneid moved west to start the Sierra Club's Cross-Country Ski School at the Clair Tappaan Lodge he discovered that California is one of the premier ski areas in the country. Now, after years of investigation and research, he has compiled a book detailing California's major cross-country ski areas and local resort, hotel and lodge accommodations.

This combination how-to and trail guidebook covers virtually all of California's groomed cross-country ski areas. The trails were selected for their variety and the accommodations that surround them. Photos demonstrate turn techniques and show the beauty of the 22 areas covered.

Author Michael Jeneid is a fully certified P.S.I.A. cross-country instructor. He has raced in all of the major ski marathons of Europe and has twice skied Canada's 100-mile marathon, the Coureurs de Bois. He is also the author of Adventure Kayaking: Trips from the Russian River to Monterey. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title and Disappointing Content
I have high respect for the author and I find the front matter on skiing history and ski techniques very interesting & informative.

However, for a guidebook, I was disappointed to find NO maps of ski trails for anywhere. No ski tours are described. Instead each ski area is described in general terms. The description of developed ski facilities and lodging is good, but where's the ski trails?

Furthermore, the coverage is spotty. All the areas around Tahoe and Donner are covered, but the southern and eastern Sierra and southern California ski areas are poorly represented.

I recommend buying Marcus Libkind's "Ski Tours in the Sierra Nevada." He has 4 volumes for various parts of the Sierra and another book on Lassen.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional reviewer hired by the publisher, but a real skier.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to the best skiing.
Michael Jeneid's Cross-Country Skiing California provides a guide to both trails and resorts, with chapters covering all of the state's major ski regions and local accommodations as well. An excellent guide to the bestskiing. ... Read more

Product Description
White Heat is pure adrenaline -- a thrilling exploration of extreme skiing that pushes the reader over the edge with heart-pounding accounts of people who risk their lives on the fastest, steepest slopes.

Often obsessed and possibly crazy, extreme skiers and snowboarders are having the time of their lives facing death-defying challenges. But the extreme skiing life isn't just about the quest to finish first; it's a lifestyle made up of insane jumps, bone-breaking speeds, and world records -- not to mention the wild off-mountain social world, the flamboyant gear and slang completely unique to it, and, of course, the remarkable history of the racing champions and events that is its backdrop.

Wayne Johnson, former competitive skier and acclaimed novelist, takes us into the cult of extreme skiing populated by stars such as one-eyed jumping champion Jerry Martin, who held the North American distance record for more than a decade, and Vinko Bogataj, whose world-famous wipeout on ABC's Wide World of Sports gave rise to the expression "pulling a Vinko." Here are real-life adventures, everything from Shane McConkey ski BASE jumping the Eiger in Switzerland to Shawn White, the Flying Tomato, throwing 1260s in the halfpipe. Johnson, who has spent a lifetime on the mountains, also puts you in his boots when recounting goose-bump- inducing tales of high-speed downhill racing, Nordic jumping competitions, avalanche control, and the hip, ripping world of snowboarding.

If you've ever wondered what kind of nut would willingly choose to fly off a twenty-story ski jump, or have ever dreamed of living outside the usual boundaries, or just like to read about people having life-expanding adventures, then White Heat is an exhilarating thrill ride that will leave you breathless. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars When you can't be Skiing, read this book!!!!
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to jump hundreds of feet on skis, learn to drop explosive charges into avalanche zones or deal with a dying, severely injured skier as a First Responder? Wayne Johnson has personally done all of these things and much more. In addition, he explores almost every other aspect of the skiing life from the eccentric ski bum who tragically dies while living in the woods to the struggles of World Class racers. If you want a heavy classic, as some reviewers seem to desire, read, "1984" or the "Grapes of Wrath".If you want a teriffic book to inspire and motivate you this ski season, read this book. A great gift for any adventurous person in your life!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A taste of the ski life
An excellent read giving a glimpse at ski culture.I have been a ski patroller in the Midwest for over twenty years, doing it full time for the last seven years. I know patrollers that drive three hours to volunteer to patrol or drive all night to allow their children to race in the Upper Pennisula, MI.

To the best of my knowledge I have never met the author but I have skied Park City, The Canyons, Alta and other areas. I have stood in the patrol hut at the top of Jupiter lift with twenty five other patrollers performing an avalanche rescue drill on West Face.Getting from the hut to the avalanche site meant skiing the ridge in a sixty mile per hour whiteout.

The author accurately portrays the thought processes on rescues and opening and closing sweeps.
The author also gives a good representation of the various aspect of other snowsports including racing and snowboarding.

The author fails to inform the reader of the many mundane actions a patroller performs including the paperwork after the care for the injured has been transferred. Each incident requires an incident report and usually an investigation. While not part of the glamour and adrenaline, it is a vital part of the incident follow-up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Soporific
There are some readers who do not like the style it is written, replacing "him" with a stylistic "you" in some of the narrative.Although somewhat annoying, I do not think that is the main problem with the book. The main problem is it lacks focus. Is this a book where the author gives his personal account/experiences or a reference/who's who in skiing and snowboarding? It started out strong as I read about his stories as ski patrol and avalanche patrol but then it moves to ski racing and there are virtually no personal account on that. The same for ski jumping which has very little personal account and ditto for snowboarding, and freeriding. As a reader I'm left confused whether this is a reference book or more memoir/personal experience?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb take on the culture, history and techniques of Skiing
I am a journalism professor who teaches writing and a non-skier who has both friends and colleagues who live skiing, which is something that I never truly understood until I read this book. To me, skiing always seemed a bit too dangerous, but I always enjoyed watching it and many of the rather heroic careers of skiing champions written about in this book were known to me - though not in the depth covered here. I flatly loved this book!!! It's exciting from the first page - and even I could feel my pulse starting to race and sense the love of this sport that dominates those who've made skiing an important - even central - part of their lives!!! If I were younger and a bit healthier than I am today, I'd have made skiing an important part of my life. The book is artfully written with exceptional prose to help the reader share the sensations felt by avid skiers. The author uses first, second and third person as appropriate, andemphasizes second person as both a form of direct address to the reader and to bring the reader into the narrative. A truly exceptional read that I'd recommend to all with a desire to know better the skiing life complete with it's subjective feeling as well as an objective history and description of technique. Simply superb!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour De Force
This wonderful book addresses the lives and life surrounding the extreme aspects of skiing (avalanche controllers, racers, ski jumpers, snowboarders, mountain patrollers, and a sundry feast of other characters), and readers will find it an inspiring and lucid examination of just what drives people to such extremes, be it a love of speed or heights or jumping off helicopters.Wayne Johnson has delved deep into the hearts of those who aren't content to live out their lives in a prescribed, socially acceptable manner, and he's written a fine book honoring the idiosyncrasies of their lives. It is a thrilling account, and the narrative is written as daringly as the lives it examines. You don't have to love skiing to enjoy this book --it's entertaining as hell and you'll be hard pressed to find any writer out there with the massive talent Mr. Johnson brings to his subject.Odds are that when you get to the end of the book you'll do as I did:you'll go back to page one and start reading it again.

Regarding an earlier review, in which the reviewer claims the book suffers from "enormous stylistic flaws," one has to wonder what planet he lives on (I laughed out loud at the absurdity of the statement). He has a problem with Johnson's use of second person narration, a perfectly valid and effective technique used by countless writers and essayist throughout history.I would direct the reviewer to the likes of Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Gunter Grass, Italo Calvino,, Jay McInerney, Carlos Fuentes, John Updike, and many, many other gifted writers. One wonders if the reviewer would have been more pleased if the book had been written in an uptight, faux scientific manner, complete with footnotes and a good dose of pretentious Latin terminology. (Thankfully, author Wayne Johnson has spared us that scenario). In fact, by its tone and tenor (petty, plebeian), one wonders if this profoundly uptight reviewer was passed one too many times by Mr. Johnson on the ski hill. ... Product Description
Tracks of Passion traces the story of Eastern Sierra skiing from its beginnings in the 1930s with early rope tows outside sleepy towns along Highway 395 to the development of Mammoth Mountain. In the 1960s Dave McCoy's vision for a family-fun ski resort expanded as his personally-trained racers competede internationally and his children raced in the Olympics. With more than a half-century of McCoy's leadership, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area eventually encompasses 27 lifts and a gondola, lodgings, and amenities for skiers. An enthusiastic staff of dedicated mavericks ran ski lifts, ski patrol, and ski school each winter and built lifts each summer. Turning over the reins in 2005 at the age of 90, Dave McCoy summed up his career saying "It wasn't a job, it was a love affair." ... Read more

Product Description
Predating the wheel, the ski has played an important role in our history. This is brilliantly brought to life in this engaging book. Roland Huntford's brilliant history begins 20,000 years ago in the last ice age on the icy tundra of an unformed earth. Man is a travelling animal, and on these icy slopes skiing began as a means of survival. That it has developed into the leisure and sporting pursuit of choice by so much of the globe bears testament to its elemental appeal. In polar exploration, it has changed the course of history. Elsewhere, in war and peace, it has done so too. The origins of skiing are bound up in with the emergence of modern man and the world we live in today. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Two Blanks and a Passion
I was very disappointed by this book.I was looking forward to reading a good history of skiing. The book is very poorly written, almost as if it is a tranlation into English.I know this is not true since the author is English. The book goes into way too much detail on early Norwigian skiing and spents too much time discussion the details of very early ski races. There is not nearly enough discussion of the developement of modern skiing and modern equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a casual history of the ski
I got this for my uncle for Christmas and was halfway through reading it myself by the time we had to head back home.So now I guess I have to get a copy of my own...
If, like me, you are a fan of serious history and the meticulous research that goes into it, then this book is what you are looking for. There have been other books that provide a breezy and cursory treatment of the fascinating history of skiing, but Huntford really goes far beyond what the other books have to offer.
Highly recommended for skiers and history buffs alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ski history
This book isn't what I expected. It is good for the prehistoric info about skiing but is too technical and over-worded for the rest of skiing history and doesn't come up into a modern enough time period. It misses some of the recent short, shaped ski developments and their impact on alpine racing and ski instruction. ... Product Description
In this impassioned expose, lifelong skier Hal Clifford reveals how publicly traded corporations gained control of America's most popular winter sport during the 1990s, and how they are gutting ski towns, the natural environment, and skiing itself in a largely futile search for short-term profits.

Chronicling the collision between Wall Street's demand for unceasing revenue growth and the fragile natural and social environments of small mountain communities, Clifford shows how the modern ski industry promotes its product as environmentally friendly--even invoking the words and emblems of such environmental icons as Ansel Adams and John Muir--while at the same time creating urban-style problems for mountain villages. He also uncovers the ways in which resorts are carefully engineered to separate visitors from their money, much like theme parks.

Clifford suggests an alternative to this bleak picture in the return-to-the-roots movement that is now beginning to find its voice in American ski towns from Mammoth Lakes, California, to Stowe, Vermont. He relates the stories of creative business people who are shifting control of the ski business back to the communities that host it.

Hard-hitting and carefully researched, Downhill Slide is indispensable reading for anyone who lives in, visits, or cares about what is happening to America's alpine communities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Written in 2003, it perfectly predicts 2010
This book never gets old. As we watch the resort industry circle the drain EXACTLY as predicted in Downhill Slide, it makes you wonder how we could all be so stupid. A few get very, very rich at the cost of thousands of people left with nothing and an environmental disaster where taxpayers pick up the tab. This book is about the ski industry but could easily have predicted the inevitable downfall of Enron or Goldmann Sachs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
I enjoyed reading this book.

One individual has given it the same rating of one star three different times, bringing down the overall score by more than one reviewer should. Not fair to Mr. Clifford and his efforts, Amazon should fix this. I do understand why people in the industry might wish to discredit Mr. Clifford's book, though.

I do not feel this book is "deep environmentalism" as suggested by some other reviewers. I think Clifford's discussion of impacts, on minimum streamflows and wildlife habitat for example, are relevant within the context of current environmental concerns, policy, and law. I suspect readers who feel this is "deep environmentalism" might find any obstruction to enterprise on behalf of fish and wildlife to be unacceptable.

I also find the social aspects discussed to be relevant to the residents of these communities and the labor force which supports the industry. I think anyone interested in resort skiing, real estate, and development in general can read Mr. Clifford's book and find themselves informed and entertained. That is, unless the thought of elk herds and trout getting in the way of development of recreational properties annoys you.

I found it to be well researched, well edited, and yes, opinionated. All in all, informative and easy read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is
Although this book can be read like a big negative, it is very insightful. There are likely to be some positive affects of development which the author does not spend time describing and definitely comes across as having an agenda, but for the curious it is a great read. I was unable to put the book down until I was finished!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any one involved with ski companys
Great read, exceptionaly well resurched, gets a bit slow at the end, keep an open mind as could be a bit one sided makes the corporations seem a little worse than they realy are, written in 2000 but still right on in 2006. Applies the world over not just the in the USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars scholarly skiing
it is clearly evident that clifford did a tremendous amount of research for this book and that makes it a truly interesting read.although he was a little too biased at times, he gives a thoughtful and unique perspective on the current status and future ramifications of the ski industry. ... Product Description
A comprehensive history of skiing from its earliest origins to the outbreak of World War II, this book traces the transformation of what for centuries remained an exclusively utilitarian practice into the exhilarating modern sport we know today. E. John B. Allen places particular emphasis on the impact of culture on the development of skiing, from the influence of Norwegian nationalism to the role of the military in countries as far removed as Austria, India, and Japan. Although the focus is on Europe, Allen’s analysis ranges all over the snow-covered world, from Algeria to China to Zakopane. He also discusses theparticipation of women and children in what for much of its history remained a male-dominated sport. Of all the individuals who contributed to the modernization of skiing before World War II, Allen identifies three who were especially influential: Fridtjof Nansen of Norway, whose explorations on skis paradoxically inspired the idea of skiing as sport; Arnold Lunn of England, whose invention of downhill skiing and the slalom were foundations of the sport’s globalization; and Hannes Schneider, whose teachings introduced both speed and safety into the sport.Underscoring the extent to which ancient ways persisted despite modernization, the book ends with the Russo-Finnish War, a conflict in which the Finns, using equipment that would have been familiar a thousand years before, were able to maneuver in snow that had brought the mechanized Soviet army to a halt.

More than fifty images not only illustrate this rich history but provide further opportunity for analysis of itscultural significance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An independent book on Rainier--> ie a very good thing
1.Ok, so it appears that this book isn't in publication, but it is still readily available.

2.Bottomline:you can find many cookie cutter type books on Rainier which have very similar information, which is a good thing to have for the novice to Rainier. However, if you live in the region and want to really check out some off road trails (ie the "Adventures" part of the title), definitely check this book out.Yes, in parts, it may appear to be cryptic but the overall information within this book is unique and well worth it for the person who frequents Rainier.I only wish that the author would come out with an updated version.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little information, too many errors
I initially picked up this book to supplement our aging copy of "50 Hikes in Mount Rainier National Park". Accustomed to the detailed descriptions in "50 Hikes...", I found the hiking coverage wasdisappointingly thin. Of course, this is not surprising considering thatthe author tried to cram a driving, bicycling, hiking, climbing, AND skiingguide into only 172 pages. More unsettling were the errors I found. Themileages for a number of the hikes were at variance with the distancesposted and published by the Park (and verified with my own feet!),sometimes by several miles. It makes me wonder what sort of errors may havecrept into the climbing section, where mistakes can have far more seriousconsequences than tired feet.

The book does contain a bibilography, butno index (which is generally quite useful in a book filled withgeographical place names). Interestingly, "50 Hikes..." islisted, but it's the 1975 copy. That's even older than mine!

Also, in mycopy the second page of the Preface and the entire Appendix weremissing.

If you want a good hiking guide to Mt. Rainier, try the currentcopy (4th ed.) of "50 Hikes in Mount Rainier National Park" bySpring and Manning.

5-0 out of 5 stars very imformitive and very useful. top notch!

2-0 out of 5 stars Guide to prepare you for your first ski lesson.
Be in good shape and dress warm. WOW THANKS! no, not much technincal help here. OK prep for your first time out. Also, I'm not sure why there's so much advanced info in here. It is a dummies book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know about Skiing
I found this book quite helpful as a beginner who knows squat about skiing.. It takes you through every process of the sport from Learning to Ski to purchasing your lift ticket and everything in between.I found many of the tips quite useful.Although my best suggestion is just go and purchase a lesson it's well worth the money and hands on skiing is definitely way better than reading about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whether you've already tried skiing, or want to
This is a terrific guide! For people who have already tried skiing and are still somewhat mystified by the complexity of the equipment and the rental shop and just finding one's way around, this book is an invaluableaid in moving up to the next level. For people considering taking up thesport in the next season, it will help you to have a satisfying, enjoyableexperience.

The author provides handy, valuable tips on things assimple as what to wear, and things as complex as how to choose a ski.Heexplains how ski boots should fit, and how to rent them. There is a bigemphasis on the importance of taking a lesson, but more importantly, how toget the most out of that lesson.

For anyone who plans a ski trip fornext season, whether it is a day or a week or more, the small investment inthis wonderful guide will be returned many times over.Even the mostexperienced skiers will find something useful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Common sense
When buying a book, you would hardly expect to get only a pieceof common sense for your money. Unfortunately, this is the case with thisbook. Its main message is "get yourself a skiing instructor and learn how to ski". I agree, noone learns how to ski (swim, play basketball, etc.)from a book only, but nonetheless the book should advise on techniques, not tell one that he/she needs a coach. It's pretty obvious, even for a dummy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased with Author's Suggestions
Alot for the money!I am glad I bought this book. I had my doubts that I could actually learn anything new since I have been in the rental business for some time. I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised. The author's suggestions made it easy for me to convert my beautiful vacation home into a vacation rental without having to give up any of the luxuries. And as promised, she sent me a Welcome Book and gave me a free listing for my rental. I also bought the companion organizer book. It makes tracking rentals, expenses, income and tax deductions much easier. Everything You Need for Your VACATION RENTAL Including 2011 Calendar System and Tax Organizer: Bookkeeping System Made Easy! (Volume 1)

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Effective Approach to Vacation Rentals
I am a marketing specialist and vacation rental owner, so my curiousity was peaked when reading the reviews about this book.
I am glad I ordered it. A no nonsense approach that provided ideas I hadn't yet encountered. Some techniques are a little scary such as charging considerably more than the competition, which I am afraid to do in the current economy. In less stringent times, I feel this pricing strategy is an intelligent approach. I noticed the book was published in 2007, back in a stronger economy. I have utilized most methods in this book and it is right on target. Definitely a good value and good advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Concise - Just what I was looking for!
Its a great book!!!!!

Last spring I bought a vacation home with the intentions of renting it out.I am a busy mom with very little time, but I figured I would give it a try.

Well, a friend of mine told me about Marie's book so I bought it. After I read it, everything fell into place! She answered all my questions and then some, things I never thought about. This book is a no-nonsense book!Gets right to the point. There's no advertisement pages (like other rental books on the market) to take up space. - just pure information on how to rent out your vacation home.

I use her Welcome Book she sent me, "customized" for my vacation home and my guests find it very helpful.Marie also listed my property on her website too for all of 2009 - free of charge - free advertisement.

I love Marie's ideas on how to prepare your home for rentals. Her system made it easy for me to use as well as for my housekeeper. She gave me some creative ideas on welcome gifts. And, how to handle security deposits, house keys, rental rules, rental agreements and what to do about cancellations.

Also, Marie helped me with screening your renters, what to say, and how to find out if they are qualified or not.

Marie gave me ideas on how to take the best pictures for advertisement.I emailed her pictures and she gave me free advice. It is so nice knowing she is there to answer all of my questions.Thank you Marie!!

If you are new at this like I am, then I strongly suggest getting this book.Marie walks you throught the entire process. And, if you email Marie, she will answer all of your questions (if you still have any after reading her book) and she will add your property on her website too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $20 for this short and shallow book
at $20 for this short book I would recommend you look elsewhere.I was VERY disappointed by the lack of useful content in the book.

The author's 'expertise' in this field is that she owns ONE vacation rental in New Hampshire, so as you might expect, her recommendations are specifically tailored to that experience and situation. There is virtually nothing in this book that would be considered truly interesting information as I suspect everything could be found online.

I wrote a prior review on this book and did not have a good alternative book to recommend.Fortunately I do now.

How to Rent Vacation Properties By Owner, but Christine Hrib Karpinski. It is about 300 pages long and in my review of it so far it appears to have a number of useful details. It easily covers anything in the "Breaking all the rules" book but with useful information and insight.

Before buying this book, I would suggest you check out the other one as well, read the reviews (significantly more of them for that book) and the author bios.

One final comparison, and perhaps not a fair one, but intended to provide another example of the difference in quality of these two books.

Both books have a forward included. For the OTHER book, it is written by some long-term journalist covering real estate. For THIS book, it was written by the author's cleaning woman (yes, I am serious).Nothing against this nice woman, but I cannot imagine she has a not of useful insights for me on how to rent my property other than that it should be clean.

Hope this helps.I don't like to dump on books or authors because I know it takes a lot of time and energy to write and publish a book, but this one unfortunately deserves to be noted because at $20 it is unfair to buyers/readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Immediate response to request granted, Nice Work!
I have read nearly every book out there on Vacation Rentals, and I found this one to be very straight forward ad easy reading.I have been in the business for 10 years, so most of this information is excellent particularly if you are new in the buisness.

I had a bit of a problem trying to retrieve my "free guest book" from the author's website, and as soon as she was aware of this, she contacted me directly and help me achieve my goal immediately.

I have listed my vacation rental on the author's site and will look forward to taking any bookings that come in as a result of this completely free advertising.

After communicating with Marie, I can see why she is successful, she is a great "problem solver"Way to go, Marie!

Warmest aloha,
Ilona Coffey

3-0 out of 5 stars Academic
I bought this book expecting great things given the FIS and IOC endorsement. What happen was that it forced me to sit down and read critically about my sport. There is alot of worthwhile information here, but there are also a lot of errors. It is very typical of reports about sports written by academics who do not ski.To say that because these scientists could not see "adominal muscules working, in xc skiing therefore they do not contribute to ski skating" shows blunt ignorance of the reality of the sport.Unfortunately, great scientific data is spoiled by wild conclusions based on observation not experience.Buy this book if you are experienced enought to know the difference. ... Product Description
Soft Skiing is unique among many how-to-ski-better books-full of practical, easy-to-follow and immediately effective ski coaching ideas, it's also a collection of personal memories by one of America's best known ski instructors, Lito Tejada-Flores. Lito is the author of Breakthrough On The New Skis, and the creator of the Breakthrough-On-Skis video series. He has never followed the "party-line" of official ski teaching orthodoxy, and his Breakthrough on Skis books are amongst the best selling ski instruction books of all time. In this book, Lito breaks new ground, focusing 100% on the art of skiing in a relaxed, energy-efficient manner, a style of virtually effortless expert skiing that is ideally suited to older skiers. In his easy-to-follow conversational style, Lito reveals the secrets of skiing all day, on all terrain, without fatigue, without a moment of struggle or stress. Actually this is a book for all skiers but more than anything it is a gift for older skiers looking for grace, elegance and efficiency rather than aggressive daring-do on the slopes. This is a book that will change skiing lives, expand skiing horizons. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars softvalue
If I didn't read the authors'other books, I would have been frustrated by this book. It is lacking in detail. I was disappointed

5-0 out of 5 stars Lito does it again
Lito has written another great instructional book on skiing. One of his earlier books, Breakthrough on the New Skis, lifted my skiing to a whole new, higher, more enjoyable level. This book reiterates many of those same points but in an even more effective way for us "older" skiers. His instructions are so clear, you can feel them while reading them.I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who wants to ski more and work less.

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher for the ages
Lito Tejada-Flores has always laid down the best tracks on the steep, tricky slopes of ski instruction writing. With the publication of "Soft Skiing: The secrets of effortless low-impact skiing for older skiers" Lito's tracks are alone and they are elegant. Every older skier who wants to keep skiing, keep improving, keep his or her body functioning while continuing to do what is, after all, a dangerous, demanding and unforgiving activity will do him or her self a favor by reading "Soft Skiing." Lito uses many tools to get across his message, including the process of his own learning to ski as a young man (alone worth the read), and becoming one of the best known ski instructors in America, and then becoming what we all have such a hard time coming to grips with---an older skier---and then, in Lito's case, one who has recovered from a broken back to continue to lay down elegant tracks the soft way. This book is ahead of its time and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Really What I Was Hoping For
I have gotten a great deal of benefit from Lito's previous books, namely Breakthrough on Skis and Breakthrough on the New Skis.I had hoped that this newest book would contain some new "nuggets" of wisdom to help me make another jump in performance on the slopes.Unfortunately I did not find that to be the case.

This book essentially expands on a concept that was discussed in Breakthrough on the New Skis, namely the soft weight shift.I think almost 3/4's of the book deals with explaining this concept and discussing how it is learned and applied on the slopes. If you've already employed this technique based on his previous book then I don't think you'll gain much here. There is no coverage of bump technique at all, but simply refers you to the previous book - excellent coverage on the subject already, I might add. There's a very small bit on powder but really not anything that Lito hasn't written before.

I always enjoy Lito's writing, but I certainly got more from earlier books. ... Read more
