5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another first rate publication from these two experts.
As I said when reviewing Vol. 1 of this series of book, it is always interesting to see which ones are preferred by the Dive Guides at the sharp end. Take it from me, they are all using this book and if it's good enough for them then it's more than good enough for me. Not once have I found any of the three volumes in my possession to be lacking in any way.

The book is well written and includes plenty of general information on diving, facilities, climate, sea, regulations, boats, cruise liners, resorts, hotels, flora, fauna, shipwrecks, photography and safety. The book then covers each of the Caribbean countries which form the main subject matter before concluding with a Glossary, Bibliography and Accident and Emergency Information.

If you want a book full of pretty pictures - then look elsewhere. This is a true guide which contains all the information you will require. It does not fool you by pretending to be something it is not - as is the case with far too many so-called "Guides," but instead concentrates on providing all the relevant and peripheral information that any Scuba Diver will want to know before and during a trip to any of the Caribbean destinations covered. The maps and diagrams are particularly useful - and very easy to follow.

My advice is to look at the "information" given in this series of books and don't get side-tracked by something more flashy. Do not be tempted away from this one - it is a straight forward, no nonsense guide containing everything you will want to know.

In summary, any book claiming to be "A Complete Guide" has to include an awful lot of information. This one has achieved just that and will not disappoint the purchaser.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate dive guide
I'd definitely give this guide full marks. It's without doubt the most comprehensive of the guides I looked at for the area I was travelling to(the Virgin Islands). It had everything we could have wanted to know andit definitely meant we did some better diving than we'd have done withoutit. We particularly liked that it gave us information about the British andUS Virgin Islands and as they are less than 5 miles apart it's simple todive both areas. They have some really different types of diving and we'dhave missed out on a lot without the guide. We bought the book before wewent but we took it along with us and used it all the time. One of thethings we enjoyed reading was the descriptions of the dives andthe sectionsabout the marine life. We've been diving for over 10 years and I've learntmore from this book than I have in my previous years of diving.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the crusing yachts bookshelf.
The Complete Diving Guide (2) is a must for anyone diving the Netherlands Antilles. I used it while cruising in the area on my yacht in St. Maarten and dived in Saba, Statia and Anguilla on the strength of the informationin the guide book. It tells you where the best dives are and how to divethem. The maps show you where the dives are and there is a lot of generalbackground about what the diving will be like. I was surprised how muchinformation the authors included and there's no woffle, it's all good valuefor money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Diving Thailand
As always Lonely Planet Snorkeling and Diving guides are the best.
Only reason I didn't give it a 5 was the fact it was a little outdated.
I think they will be making a new one soon, since this one is no longer in print.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling Thailand (Diving & Snorkeling)
Good book,

clear info as needed.

info corresponds to reality

3-0 out of 5 stars just the facts
I was hoping that this book would be like the travel books that lonely planet puts out with opinions on dive operators, places to stay etc.....but the book is a run down of dive sites more than anything else....It helps with dive site selection but it just isn't what a lonely planet book is for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best dive site book for Thailand
This book is the only one we recommend to all our customers. The authors live and work here and the information is accurate. Great photos of the marine life.

Even though we work here, we still use the book as a reference and it's always close at hand in our office.

Product Description
The Ocean – Our Most Unexplored Frontier
Many people think that space is our final frontier – and that is not entirely true.
While it is more difficult to get to outer space, we probably know more about the
various planets and environments in space than we do about what lies beneath
the surface of our oceans.

Just as in outer space, there is a whole environment, or ecosystem, under the
waters that cover 75% of our planet, with 70% of our planet being ocean waters.
Beneath those waters there really is an entirely new world -a world full of beauty
and mystery that few humans have the opportunity to experience.
But the lucky few who do have the opportunity to experience this vast under
water world are able to do so because they are scuba divers. Obviously, human
beings cannot breathe underwater, so instead, they rely on a portable respiratory
system that is self contained.

In fact, that is what the word Scuba means: Self Contained Underwater Breathing
Apparatus. This apparatus allows human beings to dive to depths that were once
unthinkable, and to stay under the water for long periods of time, depending on
how full the air tank is. Different mixtures of gasses are used in the air tank,
depending on the length and depth of the planned dive.

Forages into this underwater world have become increasingly popular, especially
since Scuba diving equipment makes it so easy. Now, if there is an ocean
nearby, you can bet there are scuba divers, scuba lessons, and scuba diving
clubs in the vicinity as well. There are even scuba diving clubs that are not
located near oceans. These clubs plan trips around the world to go scuba diving
in different oceans!

When you see the beauty that lives so peacefully under the water, it isn’t any
wonder why scuba diving is so popular. In fact, it is a world that is so amazing
and breath taking that you will want to make an under water camera part of your
essential dive equipment.

While no sport suits everyone, most people who try scuba diving are hooked
after their very first dive. Most people are looking forward to their next dive before
they ever return home from the last dive.

In our fast paced world, scuba diving offers the ultimate in relaxation and stress
relief. Imagine a world where there are no phones, no palm pilots – and no rush.
You leave a world that is noisy, and enter a world where the only real noises you
will hear are the bubbles from your scuba gear. In this world, you are only limited
by the amount of air in your tank. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars complete waste of money
It takes about all of seven minutes to scroll through this "book," which appears to have been dashed off in a couple of days. The author may well be a "diving expert," but he certainly is no writer, nor does he know how to write a useful, comprehensive introduction to scuba diving. There is nothing here you couldn't glean off the Internet, or from your Aunt Mable (like the repeated admonishments not to dive while under the influence). Bereft of useful information, and badly written--go elsewhere!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than you ever wanted to know
If you're used to PADI textbooks with glossy photos or summarized explanations about why certain diving rules hold true, you will be slightly overwhelmed. This is an in-depth discussion of the art and science of breathing underwater.
As you may know, Tom Mount is the founder and current CEO of IANTD which is slowly surpassing TDI as the predominant certifying body of technical diving. His work is backed by the experience of thousands of dives and the lessons from a few mistakes that he discusses candidly in his book (i.e. on-site DCS treatment, what happens when you dive REALLY deep on air).I have read several books on the subject, to include my training manuals and Mount and Gilliam's work is one of the most comprehensive without getting into advanced physiology.
What impressed me the most was the holistic approach they take to diving. They go as far as to discuss the process of aerobic cellular respiration, what it's like to visit a hyperbaric chamber, how to ready a patient on your boat for helicopter rescue and reference yogis and Buddhist monks in proper breathing and relaxation techniques to improve air consumption and reduce CO2 absorption. The information about rebreathers and dive computer technology is a little dated, but their discussion of the development and history of decompression tables (Buhlman, VPM, etc.) that today's modern computers are based on is still relevant. The chapters on gas blending, equipment setup and selecting the best mix for a given depth and duration are readable and offer "plug-in" formulas and practical exercises with an answer key in the back.
As with any diving activity, no one should ever undertake a practice they are not trained for, but understanding this book before you receive your training will further your comprehension of topics your instructor may only skim over or avoid discussing.

4-0 out of 5 stars In depth overview of Mixed Gas Diving
Mixed Gas Diving looks primarily at the use of exotic gas mixes for diving the extremes. There is a useful chapter on Nitrox for recreational divers, as well as good information on Trimix for those delving a little deeper. The book is comprehensive and explores breathing techniques and the physiologicial effects of different gases.Slightly dated now by new rebreather teechnologies, the book is excellent reading for aspirant Nitrox divers and those already using this gas mix.Required reading for Technical Divers. 3-0 out of 5 stars Diving for the Physicist
This book may benefit a physicist but probably offers little benefit to a diver or dive instructor. It has been a while since my math and physics classes and I found this volume daunting. If elementary particel interacton, hydrodynamics or maxwell equations are of interest to you then get this book.If you looking for usefull dive information or explanations look elswhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth review of physics applied to diving
Obviously written for readers with a sound scientific background, this book presents a quasi exhaustive review of physical principles applied to diving. Mathematical data are fully presented. The problem, as usual withB.R. Wienke publications, is that the presentation is quite"dry", written in a very cursive, non pedagogical way. You willoften need to take your time and to read very slowly and carefully tofollow the author. Leaving that aspect aside, the book is a real sum ofwhat you need to know if you want to dive with mathematical awareness ... ... Read more
