Product Description

In August of 1979, Nick Ward began the 600-mile course of the UK's Fastnet Race with perfect weather. Within 48 hours, the deadliest storm in the history of modern sailing had blasted through the Irish Sea. By the time it had passed, it had thrown one of the world's most prestigious races into bedlam and taken the lives of fifteen sailors. Ward's boat, Grimalkin, was capsized again and again, and the skipper lost overboard; after hours of struggle, three of the crew fled the boat for the liferaft. Nick and his crewmate Gerry, both injured, unconscious, and presumed dead, were abandoned on the beleaguered yacht. Gerry died a few hours later, and Nick was left alone to face down a storm that has become legendary among sailors and racing fans alike. "Left for Dead" is Nick Ward's harrowing and inspirational memoir of how he survived that dreadful night. After his dramatic rescue, Ward was overwhelmed by media and decided in 1980 not to speak of the incident again. It wasn't until this book's coauthor, Sinead O'Brien, approached him about the story that he began the personal writings that became this book. Here at last is the untold true story of an accident that has intrigued lovers of the sea for almost thirty years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good book, Kindle version sucks
Although the book is good, my comments are addressed to Kindle version for iPad. Full of mistakes where "1" or "T" is equal to "I"; space between words vanish quite often; no margin justification; no way to see 2 pages on landscape format (so you can't see a full map; etc. It looks like amateur edition with no respect for the reader/buyer. No wish to try other Kindle books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perserverance
I have been a sailor for many years as well as one with a disability somewhat similar to Nick's.
He showed what we all hope we will show when the shite comes down.

Make a special note of Nick's description of the crew's seamanship. It could not be better. Sail take downs and securing of sails. That took guts and strength as well as teamwork.

Kudos to Nick and a very fine fellow.

Best regards,

James Good

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible story, beautifully told, riveting
Could not put it down. Stayed up way too late. Unparalleled story - I've read a lot of the sailing disaster stories, and none is as coherent, compelling, or raw as this one. Many lessons for sailors in here, but fascinating reading for non-sailors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book about a sailor's worst nightmare
It took me less than a day to read this book from the first to the last page. Once you start it, you won't want to put it down before the very last word. Nick Ward isn't the greatest writer, but his story is well told and perhaps the lack of perfection underlines the authenticity. First you learn how a few minor errors or too much trust in others can make you sail straight into a hurricane. This adventure happened to Nick Ward only a few dozen miles off England's coast. And then you learn a lot about fellow sailor's behavior under high stress. And how both together may lead, as in Ward's case, to the sailor's worst nightmare : to be abandoned unconscious and left for death on a leaking, uncontrollable, drifting ship, in the middle of a hurricane. The behavior of his fellow crew members is incomprehensible, to Ward and also for the readers. Obviously, Ward wrote the book to understand what happened, how fellow sailor's can be so shabbily selfish and inhuman. He certainly wanted to provoke reactions, and perhaps also settle an account. Happily he was rescued to tell his story. It teaches us a lot about the sea and about us, humans and sailors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
Quite Quickly, you are riding the storm with Nick Ward. The book is so well written, that you can visualise the scenes, feel the torment & genuinely feel for the guy. The situation these people found themselves in, you wouldn't wish on your own worst enemy. I loved this book. You can take inspiration from this book not only by how Nick Ward dealt with what was in front of him, when the storm started to really take hold, but also with how he dealt with finding out the true events that found both himself, & his comrade, alone & at the mercy of the sea. If anything, your respect for the sea will greatly increase. I thoroughly recommend this very inspirational book. ... Read more

Product Description
Landlubbers joke that sailors are always wanting to head off to the ends of the earth, but Chris Santella takes that life-changing desire very seriously. In this, the third installment in his immensely successful “Fifty Places” series, Santella assembles a crew of the world’s greatest championship racers and professional adventurers and persuades them to disclose their favorite destinations around the globe.

Interviewees include some of the best-known men and women in the sport: Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson (members of the winning 1987 America’s Cup crew), Jeff Johnstone (of J-Boats), award-winning sailing writer Lin Pardy, and many others. The amazingly diverse places they’ve selected range from clubby East Coast ports (Marblehead, Annapolis), to idyllic tropical refuges (Ilha Grande, Brazil; the Polynesian atoll of Mopelia), to some of the most hair-raisingly treacherous waters on earth (Cape Horn).

Coastlines around the world—even Antarctica and the Arctic—are represented, and the chosen spots include some spectacular inland waters, such as the Bras d’Or Lakes and the North Channel of Lake Huron. For each of the 50 places, the sailor recommending the venue spins an entertaining yarn about his or her experience there, and each description is accompanied by a "make you want to go there now" photograph. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper
I enjoy the format of the book and will keep it around for planning my first circumnavigation as it has lots of timing information that will come in handy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wasting money
terrrrrrible book, vintage stile, just couple very bad photos and cheap stories for some places

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for sailors
This book is supposed to identify 50 places you should have sailed before you die. As a sailor I expected to read about great places to sail, a good picture of that particular place, some inside tips, and maybe a small map to identify the location easy. Instead, some places don't even have any picture, others show a sailboat that could have been on any water. The author rattles on about the accomplishments of the person who told him about this place. On one occasion (and this is where I stopped reading!) The author quotes the person recommending this place: "The only drawback to Illha Grande (Brazil) is the fact that there are very light winds. You CAN'T count on finding exciting sailing here!" (page 42) Really????
Too bad the author didn't deliver what the title suggested. This is not a book for sailors!

1-0 out of 5 stars A total miss
The author admits to sailing only as kid in '75, and at a few corporate events as a marketing specialist, not a sailor. Then collects a random sample of expert opinions, and adds a bunch of (incomplete) commercial referrals.Definately more into the marketing than the sailing.Only 41 photos total, many of which fail to describe the locations.Includes Biscayne Bay and Lake Dillon but no Bay of Islands, Whitsundays or Marquesas.Wish i hadn't bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Poor Execution
I bought this hoping for magazine sized stories about great sailing locations around the world. But the text falls woefully short. Look elsewhere for your winter sailing fix. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sailing fun with Capt'n Fatty
If you like boats and crazies then you'll love Fatty and his tales!I've known him since the 70's when we were in the V.I. and he is one amazing dude (and has a fabulous wife and daughter too, lucky fellow). He is the most unique guy I have ever met afloat and a self-taught writer who knows his stuff. He makes you laugh and enjoy being alive. If you like the sea, you'll love FATTY!He is on his 2nd circumnavigation and can be found on Facebook and Cruising World.Happy sails to you, Gabrielle Thompson

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Small Bites of Freedom
I had the good fortune to meet Carolyn and Fatty at a boat show in Oakland CA and found that he writes just as he speaks. When he shares tales of adventures on Wild Card it feels as if he's talking to YOU personally. His enthusiasm for a life dedicated to freedom is contagious. His respect for other cultures is inspiring. In "Yarns" the stories go from hilarious to hair-raising and are accessible to anyone with an adventurous tendency, sailor or not.I am thankful that Carolyn and Fatty are out there serving as de facto Ambassadors for Americans and Yachties. They do us proud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Story teller extraordinaire
Fatty is a story teller first and foremost. His articles and this book keep us motivated to finish our old boat refit for our upcoming cruise. He is so much more than a travel log or "how to" writer. His adventures and misadventures are true to life and usually have plenty of humor. Most of all his stories bring his cruising life to a point that crusing sailors and would be cruising sailors can relate to. It is as though your long time friend is relating his experience to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every sailor's kind of wroter
In this book, Capt. Fatty Goodlander's collected articles from Cruising World prove that living the life of a cruising sailor can be enchanting to anyone who loves stories about boats and the sea.His writing prowess is equally matched with a salty sprinkling of how-to-advice, Zen witticisms, and tales that will leave you breathless. If you happen to be a mush like me, his enthusiasm for life and his love for his wife will fill you with tender awe. Around and around the world they sail, sharing a bliss that makes him the envy of us all. I highly recommend this book. I give it to friends. I read it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cruising World Yarns are an ode to a live well lived
My husband and I always read Capt. Fatty's Cruising World essays and articles first, before we even flip through the magazine, because he gets us laughing so hard our guts hurt and tears roll down our face. The way Capt. Fatty loves his life and his wife, it's an attitude we appreciate. We enjoy reading of their adventures and misadventures, they make us laugh and save us some trouble! So when we saw he had books, we bought the whole collection to read while on our own boating vacation in the Caribbean. They turned out to be one part education , and just incredible inspiration on what TO do, not just with the boat, but with the whole life. What I love about Capt. Fatty is that he is a character who lives and learns. The joy of reading the whole collection of Fatty Goodlander isn't just the practical sailing information,it's the story of human growth, with accolades to the aspiring hippy in all of us. Where have all the flower children gone? Well, at least two have evolved and matured, while never letting going of the values of freedom, peace and love. We want to go where Fatty and Carolyn are, to live an honest life in a boat that is in constant motion, slowly circumnavigating again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For More than Just 'Round the World Sailors
The Pardeys are well-known for their ability to sail their small, engineless, boat safely around the world with very little of the modern equipment most of the rest of us require. Their suggestions for ways to prepare for a voyage, and to increase your comfort and improve your experience while under way are fascinating. They're also amazingly useful even for those of us who rarely venture out of sight of land.

More than just useful, this book also gives you a vivid glimpse of what living aboard a sailing vessel is like.

I recommend this book if you're interested in life at sea, now or in the past, if you're an armchair sailor, and especially if you're responsible for keeping a family or crew healthy and happy on a vacation, longer race, or coastal delivery. And, of course, it's wonderful for the obvious audience: those who are considering casting off from land and crossing oceans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Details of cruising life
A wonderful resource for anyone considering ( or actually living )on the water. Lin and Larry share all the tiny bits and pieces of their daily routine that let you feel as if you were living with them.Although it was not written as a how-to, it contains lots of simple recipes and creative insights into the daily management of the ship's provisions and crewI promise you that this is a book that you will keep in your reference library and read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Another Great book from the Pardeys.

Could barley put it down long enough to write this review. If your thinking about cruising in a boat, this book is essential to food stores and preperation as well as crew comforts.

Fantastic first hand advise and ideas from cruisers of 40 years.

Read it !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On Target!
"Larry came below shivering and blue-lipped.I got him out of his wet clothes, warmed some freshwater so he could wipe down, and got out his dry clothes. But it wasn't until he had had some hot, solid food that he started to warm up and stop shivering" (p. 357); the real situations experienced during extended cruising and appropriate responses are the focus of this comprehensive book which contains relevant advice on nearly every cruising situation imaginable, with a strong emphasis on how those situations impact the crew.

The authors are professional sailors and have been full-time cruising sailors for over forty years.Their vast experience and precise writing skill enable them to expertly address a wide range of topics, and the book clearly demonstrates their mastery of the care and feeding of sailing crew.

The book is divided into 52 chapters and two indices. Each chapter presents a logged day of a sailing cruise, noting weather and sailing conditions, and covers items which are appropriate to that particular stage of an extended cruise. The concepts are emphasized with enjoyable anecdotes which illustrate the importance of preparation and adaptability.Topics include nearly everything imaginable, ranging from menu planning and food purchase and storage, through cooking methods and preservation techniques, to fishing and keeping the crew well-clothed.The authors' cruising experience ensures the hints are appropriate across a variety of weather and climate conditions. For example, rough-weather food preparation is contrasted with calm-weather cooking using limited galley facilities. The text dispenses with theory and focuses on the reality of small-craft living.

The tone of the book is personal and engaging; the coverage of the topic is masterful and authoritative. Now in its revised 3rd edition, the book is superbly edited and particularly well-balanced.The writing style is accessible and inviting and the material reads like a long letter from a personal friend--albeit a well-spoken friend with indisputably good advice and an incredibly interesting suite of daily experiences. Not only does the book instruct and encourage, it positively portrays cruising and draws the reader into the author's world.

Part adventure book, part how-to guide, part personal history, and part cookbook, the text is fun, creative, and sure to please.Regardless of the reader's level of sailing experience, the book has much to offer and ensures that the care and feeding of sailing crew will not only be possible, but an enjoyable component of future cruising. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy
The book is like new and arrived in a very timely manner.I am so pleased with this service

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
Very helpful book on sailing small catamarans. all the technical stuff a newbie needs to know. a bit dated, the appearance of the book is that it is over 20 years old, but incredibly helpful nonetheless. not very helpful to experienced sailors though, mostly because of its age, newer models of catamarans are not discussed in the book... overall though, great helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must in any cat-sailer's library
This book is the best guide out there for cat sailing. If you need to learn terms and techniques, this is the book for you.It doesn't have a ton of detail on trimming and racing, but a great guide to learn how to sail a cat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and deep... could use better pictures and minor updates
I'm a relatively inexperienced sailer and just getting into catamarans, and have read several other sailing books (and many web sites) but still learned a ton from this one. This one really does focus in closely on things that are unique to cats rather than monohulls.Berman covers almost all the questions I had, and then some, and with clear, concise language and occasional very detailed lists of stuff you need or steps to take, which were extremely helpful.Minor complaints: 1) the pictures are low quality and often shot from too far a distance or in lighting (or print quality?) that makes it tough to see what you care most about or what the caption is talking about;2) Last revision was 1999 so it doesn't say much about what's different about the newer Hobie rotomolded hull boats I'm looking at (Getaway and Wave), or some of the more modern accessories I see in sailing catalogs. But overall, unless you're a veteran cat sailer, I'd bet you could benefit from many things in here... and if somewhat new to it, this is absolutely a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catamaran sailing1 required reading
For anyone interested in catamaran sailing specifically - this is a comprehensive overview from purchasing decision factors to advanced racing techniques, and everything in between. The information is provided in an extremely user friendly format - the book is a joy to read - highly recommended for those considering starting cat sailing, just beginning cat sailing , or ready to race catamarans. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Most Are Not That Great
There are a few good sea tales by well known authors in this book, but overall, it's a disappointment for those accustomed to adventure stories like O'Brian's Aubrey series, Tristan Jones tales and the like. Some stories end unexpectedly at a point that makes them more like a movie trailer in print.Other stories appear to be the ramblings of sailors who had no specific adventure stories in their hold at all. I found N.C. Wyeth's "Great Stories of the Sea and Ships" a far better bang for the buck.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
Don't bother purchasing this book- it's boring and there are very few good stories in it. I read a lot of sailing books, and this one is the worst I've ever read. I read all of the stories just to be sure I wouldn't miss a good one but it wasn't worth my time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book, wrong title
The book was a decent book to read on a long trip, but I had great difficulty in understanding how these stories qualify as the "greatest sailing stories ever told". They were sailing stories, and that's about all I could give it. Two or three of the stories were truly great; the rest were real snoozers. I was very disappointed with the book and could barely make myself finish it because I felt deceived by the author/editor's choice of title. A better title would be 'Sailing Stories, the Good and the Boring.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift For A Sailor
I haven't actually read this book myself, but then again, I don't sail either. It was a gift for my father at Christmas and, although he doesn't read much, he didn't want to put it down for our holiday meal!Even my mother has picked it up to read the tales. They both have very much enjoyed it and that means a lot in my book!

If your thinking of upgrading from a single sailor boat to a "small boat" this is a great place to start and ontop of that a good read.Lots of pratical ideas on making the daysailer a weekend joy.Good advice on many aspects that will help to increase your sailing enjoyment and knowledage.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for the prospective buyer of a small trailerable sailboat
This text is good for the prospective buyer of a small sailboat.
It does outline the features and high points of a good cross section oftrailerable sailboats.

As an owner of the Rhodes22 I bought the book to see how it was actually reviewed by the author.I did benefit from the chapter on trailers and
on cruising.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly shallow
Only the first few pages of this book contain anything of value--a discussion of the virtues of going small vs. large. And even that is nothing that can't be found online with a few good searches. The few reviews he includes are of boats many people wouldn't consider "small." After that, it's pure filler, stuff you can find anywhere. Bummer.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wish...
I wish that they had written about more boats...
The categories discussed in the book are all fine, and if this is the only book you are buying it is very well written, but more discussion of actual boats that fit the bill would have been more instructive as to the pluses and minuses of each individual boat.
Otherwise, a nice update. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars In the wrong direction
Single handed sailing is a good book, but for my interests it was bent to much towards raceing but that is not authors fault but my own, I was hopeing to find out more about those who may cruise singlehanded but still in all it was well written and informative. Thanks Frank P.

3-0 out of 5 stars One of Everything
Henderson covers all the bases, and the book is full of helpful hints. But book is a synopsis of all he's read (not complete) and is presented ina dry style.Though solid at core, information is now dated.Good forbrief history of single-handing, and lots of helpful hints andillustrations.Well worth the purchace, well worth the read, but keepreading. Does anyone know what boat is on the cover?

4-0 out of 5 stars Extensive current & historical information for Singlehanders
This is a reference book.A "must" for anyone persueing the reality of offsore singlehanded sailing. This is not a basic how-to, but rather assumes the reader has some relevant experience.

The writer delves into yacht and rigging design from the historical perspective allthe way through to modern day Vendee' and Around Alone (ex BOC) typepurpose built (solo) racing machines. None or very limited coverage of MiniTransat(s) or 6.5m class boats.

Chapters also include psycologicalmotivation, sleep deprivation, steering, stores, etc.

Product Description
Sailing in Stitches relates the story of a circumnavigation in a 74 foot Yawl. Dr. John Cocker, a retired Family Physician and Publisher of STITCHES, the Journal of Medical Humour, decided at age 67 that he still had time for one more adventure. The book relates the planning and purchase of the vessel and then the adventures that happened along the way.

A motley crew was assembled and left Fort Lauderdale in November, 2000. Dr. Cocker, with 20,000 miles of blue water sailing experience, was the only one on board who had sailed out of sight of land before. Heading down the Caribbean to Trinidad and then the Panama Canal, Dr. Cocker relates stories of the sailing, along with anecdotes and incidents that occurred.

The vast space of the Pacific, the 3,000 mile leg to the Marquises, when no other boat was seen for three weeks, and the events that occurred on scattered Pacific Islands, together with some natural history, economics and gossip make fascinating reading.

From Australia, the voyage headed from Bali through the South China Seas, where they were boarded at night by pirates, then through 'Pirate Alley', the straights of Malacca and to Phucket. Next came the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Mediterreanean, and home across the Atlantic.

Dr. Cocker's interest in foreign land, history, geography and people is evident, and his outspoken criticism of regimes and religions make fascinating reading for those of us who choose to stay at home and a guide for those of us who wish to sail. ... Read more

Product Description
Why must a boat make leeway in order to sail to windward? How can a helmsman prevent downwind rolling? Why is a sail able to produce a force at right angles to the wind direction? How do the motions of water particles in waves affect boat handling? These and many other important questions are addressed by the author in this detailed study of the motive forces of a yacht.

The author has the rare gift of enabling his readers to relate the nautical phenomena with which they are so familiar to a physical explanation of how and why these occur. The first part covers downwind sailing, upwind sailing, sails, the hull, and the dynamic motion of a yacht. Part Two is devoted to more mathematical explanations of the same phenomena for those requiring a more scientific approach. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I know more about physics than about sailing
Has a lot of information about the physics and engineering of sailboats. Sometimes, the basic things are intermingled with advanced material, which makes it difficult to get it in the first reading. Overall, I learned a lot from the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you really want to understand
If you really want to understand sailing and what makes the boat go through the water and why this is the book. Its not a light bedtime read. You do have to think about what is being said and explained but the explanations are complete enough to appeal to an engineer (as myself) yet presented with enough discussion that a non-engineer with an interest in the details can enjoy it as well. Although the equations and formulas are given, you don't need to know sophisticated math to understand. Its not a cookbook to sail faster but if you apply the material presented here, you cannot but sail faster, better and more efficiently.

4-0 out of 5 stars The full story
Garrett goes all out in describing the real physics behind sailing.A great book for anyone with a serious need or want to understand the intricacies behind a wonderful sport. The book is very technical, especially in the latter parts. Very well written, and much less overwhelming than Marchaj.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
If you like sailing and physics this book will make you enjoy on a fourth dimension.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but maybe not enough detail for a first time/inexperienced builder
I recently completed building the Ulua described in the book (and bought full size plans, which are helpful but not neccesary).

The designs are captivating and inspiring. However, the description of methods and construction a sparse at times--at least compared to other books that describe how to build a boat (e.g., Nick Schade does in his strip kayak book).I've done some moderate wood work and am handy with wood and tools, but for my first boat building project I would have really liked some more "hand-holding" and specific descriptions (and more dimension) of how to fabricate and assemble specific parts of the Ulua (again something a bit more along the lines of N. Schade's book). You need to look at the diagrams/plans VERY carefully and think many parts down the line to avoid rebuilding a few parts and even then it is sometimes difficult to 'lift' some of the unstated dimensions.

If you built one of the boats in this book you will have a fun sail and a unique boat--but pick up some other book(s) as references for both constuction and rigging. This all relates to me experience building the Ulua, the Wa'apa looks like a relatively easier project to tackle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared for a lot of lost weekends..
Very straight forward and fascinating. Whether you ever build a sailing canoe or not this guy covers it all. From drawing of the molds to stepping masts the text covers every detail. I bought the book to read not build as a lot of time is involved. However, I do find the authors treatment as well done and recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general knowledge book on mulithull sailing boats
This book is crammed with the author's experience and basic knowledge of both building and sailing the south sea multihull boat.Very good for the moderately interested reader, a little above the starter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Canoe Building
This book contained many design ideas and options that I hadn't considered. The pictures effectively explain and amplify the textual material. It was well worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
The book details three different boat designs. I was also glad to see alot of useful basic boatbuilding information. I am very happy with my purchase. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of building one of his outrigger canoes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This is one of my favorite memoirs. Great insights into relationships. I often find myself thinking about scenarios in this book throughout my week.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sailing down the Moonbeam
This memoir of Mary Gottschalk telling of a sailing adventure in the mid 1980's is indeed one that holds a reader's interest.Whether or not the story involves a problem with the mechanics of the sailing vessel or a problem with the relationship of the author and her husband, it is good entertainment in a good read. The reader is taken on a travel tale whether on the open sea or in a marina interacting with others. All in all, Sailing down the Moonbeam is recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars In lesson in relationships out of the comfort zone
Mary Gottschalk's book is a lesson for all mid-life adults who believe they know themselves and their spouses well until they choose to leave the context of lives they've carefully arranged to pursue a dream - when they leave a life out of the comfort zone.

This book isn't about the technical preparations to prepare a boat for a sail around the world. No. It's a lesson about how your closest relationships change in unforseen circumstances (circumstances beyond your control) such as sailing around the world or navigating other bumpy waters life presents (job loss, crippling illness, death of a parent or spouse, moving to a new city). Part soap opera, part adventure travel book, part self-help guide, this book is a quick read and a cautionary tale for every couple that dreams about packing it all in to sail the world.

The book doesn't ask if you're ready to sail the world. It asks if you're ready to really find out how well you know yourself and your spouse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sailing Down the Moonbeam
Sailing Down the Moonbeam give us a glimpse of what life is likewhen time is measured not by the small increments of second, minutes and hours, but by the rising of the sun and the rising of the moon and stars. It's a liberating book.

Laura Sands

5-0 out of 5 stars Risk, Adventure, Love
This memoir probes a question many of us face, "Do I have the courage to follow my dreams, wherever they may take me?"

Mary's answer was "Yes!" Her most important discoveries were not about the world--the challenges of sailing, of building and maintaining relationships or of recreating her career--but about knowing and accepting herself.

Read this! It may change your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful.
Great resource book to take out of the water with you, assuming you still have adequate eye-sight to locate a sailing vessel at several nautical miles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Text, Fun Read
This is a classic. It used to sit on the shelves of beach and lake houses everywhere, I think. It is fully of interesting information, some useful for sailing and some useful for bar bets (you can stump a LOT of people by asking about the difference between ketch and a yawl, and this is the book that will end the argument). Its a fun "browse."

The print is a bit small, and it is somewhat dated in its presentation. Its not meant to teach you to sail, but as a reference guide.I learn something or other every time I pick it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Royce's: Great Sailing Handbook
Dunno what happened to the copy I bought many years ago, however it was a delight to revisit Royce's book. Even after 35 years of sailing, I learn a few more tidbits of sailing thanks to this book. There is a lot of information to absorb so I find the book most enjoyable by reading maybe just one or two pages at a sitting, similar to eating fine chocolates, leaving some goodness for later. For the most part, the book is a fantastic reference. I found one annoyance and I cannot understand why the content of a book would be printed with a light blue colored text. I find the lightly colored textdifficult to read, too little contrast. Also, I would rather have seen contemporary sailing expounded upon rather than digressing back to the tall ships, trivia, though some people might find this to be of interest. Still, a must book for all who enjoy sailing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Premier textbook for beginning sailors
When learning any new skill, the first order of business is learning the jargon or terminology. Sail boating is rich in traditional jargon, and helps the beginner to understand, not just the words but basic concepts and theory of sailing.Royce's Sailing Illustrated, Vol. 1: The Sailors Bible Since '56 is truely the Bible of sailing, teaching the jargon with wonderful illustrations that are easy to understand. Aboard Sail Holy Grail in Kona Hawaii, we use this as our beginning textbook. See www.konasail.com for more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sailing with Pat
I had the opportunity to sail Pink Cloud through Newport (CA) harbor with Pat Royce in 1978. He gave me a signed copy of his book which I will forever cherish; I started sailing International 14's a couple years later and had a chuckle when I looked to see Pat included the 14 in his book. A wonderfully illustrated and narrated book. Buy one for yourself and give as gifts to your friends who want to learn about sailing. ... Read more
