5-0 out of 5 stars Paragliding Review
After finishing my training, my mind had an overload of new information, and struggling to processes, most of which was learn under some stress. So it stands to reason not all the information was retained? Wrong! Once I started to read "The Art of Paragliding" I found it was a step by step guide to what I had been taught in the training paddock, and then some. If you are serious about getting involved with Paragliding this is the only book i have found that gives you a step by step introduction to Paragliding for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gread Book, a must for everyone who wants to become a pilot
This book explains in a very easy to understanding way all subjects related to paragliding for novice pilots, the diagrams and drawings are easy to follow. I have trouble to let the book out of my hands. It definitive helped me to pass my theory exam as good as I did. So, well done. PS: have done just my 11th flight yesterday

5-0 out of 5 stars Just all the theory a beginner needs
This book explains quite simply all the basics of how the wing flies; weather; pilot technique; how judgment skills are important. It covers all the info you need to pass a P2 or P3 rating exam, even aerial space maps and FAR 103 rules. In spite of so much contained information the book is not huge, it's written briefly and interestingly. Highly recommended!
The pictures/drawings are gray-scale, which is not that important. The only thing I don't like is the paperback, because it's not durable.

See you in the sky ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Excellent book for beginners to get an idea of how to approach the skills needed to paraglide.

Product Description
The Powered Paragliding Bible 2nd Edition builds on the sport's most popular training manual and reference guide. New techniques, improved color, more illustrations and enhanced versions of existing ones make the subject come to life in an easy-reading style. The book guides a pilot from first look at the equipment through first flight and well beyond. Experienced pilots will appreciate the entire section devoted to mastering Powered Paragliding. Jeff has drawn from his experience, including as 2004 U.S. Champion, and by learning from our sports most talented instructors. Many new photographic and illustrative techniques have been employed to make difficult concepts emerge through the fog. New knowledge is also concisely incorporated in this packed manual. There is an entirely redone and expanded chapter on flying with wheels, a growing part of the sport. New techniques are explored as well as an assesment of the gear and it's tradeoffs. If you're looking at getting into powered paragliding, this will describe what you're in for. That's what Chapter 1 is devoted to, in fact. If you're an experience pilot, this will add new tools to make your flying safer and more fun. It is not meant for self training, an endeavor that has proven expensive at best. But it is a great tool for those who want to be responsible, really learn the sport, it's nuances, rules and life-saving tips. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
First, let me describe myself as it pertains to the sport so you know where I'm coming from with this review. I'm very much a novice. I just did my first solo flight a week prior to writing this review.
I was looking for a "text book" that I could reference and study as I hopefully progress. This book is just what I was hoping to find. I wasn't sure the sport had a big enough market for someone to put a book together like this but I'm pleased that it is. This book is very thorough and quite literally provides instruction from the ground up. In addition, the book is full of good pictures that just make it fun rather than a just a boring text.
I imagine that even an experienced pilot would benefit from this book and if instructors aren't issuing this book to their students, they should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations
I am a relatively new paramotor pilot with around 30 flights. I have found this book very helpful. It would have accelerated my training process if I had read it before. It exceeded my expectations on many fronts. The pictures, visuals and graphs are very useful. The content and chapters cover the questions/ problems faced by ppg pilots in flight life. Pages/content on meteorology is a bit shallow and there are some typos in various places, but overall a very useful, top notch book on ppg.

5-0 out of 5 stars powered paragliding Bible
First Class Information, very inclusive and complete. I'm an English major so a little picky about editing, could use a good proof reader.Very well laid out with great information for the beginner as well as the expert wanting some background theory and detail. WELL DONE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply awesome.
I've been flying for 18 months now, and had 167 flights. This book has been critical to my learning. The dog-eared pages still get opened on a regular basis as I read about more advanced topics. A fantastic book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Complete review of all aspects of PPG. Very thin on meteorology but very thorough on all technical aspects. Has an interesting chapter for transitioning from paragliding to PPG. Don't expect to find information about brands and products, but about all the fundamental aspects to look for choosing your gear. Overall a very good bible for PPG. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Buy--Best Information
When I started paragliding I bought 6 different DVD/s and Books.
This is by far the best.Information is so well organized is easier to understand, remember and review.Even with your instructor, this is your Ground School.Book and DVD are perfect together--- and each is worth the entire price!!!My best buy in paragliding!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardcover, Best Book on the Market!
This book is very thorough and concise in explaning the theory, practice, and mechanics of paragliding. The book also explains every additional aspect of the sport such as weather, vocabulary, checklists, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone involved or interested in the sport; a beginner or a P-5 Tandem X-country Instructor professionally sponsored Competitor with all extra ratings!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beginners view
Excellent book for a beginner with clear and comprehensive instruction. I worked through the intro's before my first lesson and began flying from the very first run.By run 4 the instructor advised the other trainees to watch and copy my technique - not bad considereing they started the course 2 days before me! The included DVD is worth watching but a bit naff - a pity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, fast shipping!
Buyer provided exactly what was needed in a timely fashion. Also, this shipper was light on the packaging, which I appreciate for environmental reasons.

Great vendor! Will certainly consider using them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ditto what everyone else says - a good starter book
It mentions what you need to know in an organized fashion; a good book to have around while you are taking lessons.Read it once when you start, once while you're training, and once after you've trained. Each time you'll glean more from it.Does it say it all?Of course not but no book could.I suggest also watching some of the videos out there (I've worn out my copy of "The art of kiting").And if you've read the 2-star review well all I can say is that there is no such thing as common sense, especially when your life is on the line.Another book to start out with is Tom Bradbury's "Metrology and Flight".Good luck and happy landings!

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding, well-illustrated primer
This was exactly what I was looking for, a detailed, well-illustrated introduction to the sport of paragliding to help me assess the safety and decide whether or not this is something I want to pursue. I particularly liked the photos of common dangers and the detailed explanations on how to avoid such mishaps. While some of the advice crosses the line of too obvious to mention, such as not flying while drunk or high, or avoiding restricted airspace such as military firing ranges and nuclear power plants, there was plenty of new information for me, even as an experienced hang gliding pilot. This is somewhat dated (revised in 1995,) although most of the recent equipment and technical information is best learned from a certified instructor, not an intro book such as this one. I took one star off for the date and for the international focus (heavy on Japan). While most of the flying basics are universal, I would like to see a stronger emphasis on USA sites and community in the next edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars No real detail
Try to cover too much, without much substance.I might help you get an overall idea of the sport, but not much more than common sense.

I am a beginner, but not a starter and was looking for a book of which I can learn and apply from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting book!
Very good introduction to Paragliding. Nice writing style, great pictures, and very informative. Focus in on UK standards, but most of it holds for North America! Higly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book which is now probably better.
I had to buy this book as part of the paragliding training course I did last year.the book prepared me well, and I still find myself thumbing through itevery now and again. the sport of paragliding is moving forward technology-wise and my only criticism would be that the book is dating quickly but I have just noticed that Noel Whittal has released an updated version of the book..it would be a good idea to get the latest version. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece
As with hang gliding, Dennis Pagen is the pantheon of written technical instruction for paragliding. Be forewarned that this is not a touchy feely "Fly Like A Bird" piece with lots of lofty prose and exciting color photos.

As a former hang gliding pilot, I recognized Pagen's byline and bought the book hoping it would give me a good understanding of how and why a paraglider flies, and help me to evaluate the safety, technical requirements and limitations of the sport. I bought it as a primer and expect to use it as a reference book for many years to come.

It is slightly dated with a 1990 copyright, although most of the principles are the same. The most recent advances in equipment and technique are something that should be learned from a live, certified instructor on a training hill, anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is outdated
Dennis Pagen is a great writer of flying books but this book - published in 1990 - is now - in 1998 - outdated. The drawings are not good and reminiscent more of a parachute manual than of a paragliding manual.I would hope Dennis Pagen would update his book. Paragliding techniques and hardware have considerably evolved in eight years.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "how-to" book on an obscure sport
Dennis Pagen's been writing about foot launched flying (hang gliding and paragliding) for over 20 years.I used this book as a student 7 years ago and have found nothing better since.I still refer to it from time to time to answer questions.Well illustrated with drawings, it is a good theortical discussion as well as practical guide to flying a paraglider. The alternative books I've read since are somewhat more current on the rapidly evolving equipment, but they are no better on principles of ultralight flight and usually lack Pagen's valuable illustrations. His companion books on micro-meteorology and advanced flying topics are a good follow-on as the student pilot progresses to more advanced levels.WARNING - You can't safely learn to fly a paraglider from this or any other book. Please get professional training from a certified instructor

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro & technical description of paragliding
Pagen is the top writer for hang-gliding and para-gliding and this book is totally dedicated to para-gliding technique, including equipment and safety rules ... Read more

Are you the kind of person who enjoys the thrill of adrenaline pumping through your body? Are you constantly on the lookout for some new excitement or adventure?
Let’s face it; your working life can be really boring at times, especially if you have one of those desk jobs that require sitting for long periods of time. Sometimes you can almost feel those muscles atrophying.
To compensate, you just have to get out and do something active at the weekends. Learning a new sport or hobby is a great way to let off steam and get some exercise at the same time.
If that new sport contains just a tiny element of danger it seems even more attractive.
Or maybe you just love nature and want to get out into the wilds to enjoy the peace and quiet. Finding a sport that will let you both get some much-needed exercise and enjoy nature all at the same time is not difficult.
Just think: Paragliding!
Paragliding is not a difficult sport to learn. It does not take hours of practice like learning to play tennis well does. You can learn to paraglide in a weekend or two.
This eBook, “Paragliding” will explain all about it.
But wait!
What exactly IS paragliding?
Paragliding is flying!
But it is flying with a special wing to help you sail through the sky.
It uses a specially made wing that is attached to the paraglider via a harness. The paraglider runs downhill to inflate the wing which then gently lifts him or her off the ground.
Naturally you have to learn how to do this properly – and how to land safely. But such lessons are easily available and of a reasonable price.
Just imagine floating through the silent atmosphere just like an eagle. You will be at one with nature in a way that few other sports allow.
You can learn how to turn the paraglider and make it do all kinds of things once you get proficient.
There are several different forms of paragliding. This eBook “Paragliding” will explain them all and introduce you to all the basics. You will find out everything you need to know about the exciting sport of paragliding. You’ll learn where to get lessons and where to go to enjoy your flight.

Chapters: Paragliding, Powered Paragliding, Cloud Suck, Judy Leden, Online Contest, Red Bull X-Alps, Dhv. Excerpt:Towering cumulus clouds are often associated with cloud suck Cloud suck is a phenomenon commonly known in paragliding and hang gliding where pilots experience significant lift due to a thermal under the base of cumulus clouds, especially towering cumulus and cumulonimbus . The vertical extent of a cumulus cloud is a strong indicator of the level of lift beneath it, and the potential for cloud suck. Cloud suck commonly occurs in low pressure weather and in humid conditions. Cloud suck is typically associated with an increase in thermal updraft velocity near cloud base . As a parcel of air lifted in a thermal rises, it also cools, and water vapor will eventually condense to form a cloud if the parcel rises above the lifted condensation level . As the water vapor condenses, it releases its latent heat of vaporization , thereby increasing the buoyancy of the parcel. The updraft is amplified by this latent heat release. Paraglider pilots have reported being unable to descend in strong cloud suck, even after bringing their canopies into full stall , which would normally result in a rapid vertical descent. Cloud suck is especially dangerous for paraglider pilots, whose maximum speed is less than 30 knots, because the updrafts can exceed their ability to get away. On 14 February 2007 while practicing for a paragliding contest in Australia, Polish-born German team pilot Ewa Wi nierska-Cie lewicz was sucked into a cumulonimbus cloud, climbing at up to 20 meters per second (4,000 feet per minute) to an altitude of 9,946 meters (32,600 feet). She lost consciousness due to hypoxia , but regained consciousness after 30 minutes to an hour, and landed still covered in ice after a three and ... ... Read more

Product Description
Glider aircraft are heavier-than-air craft that are supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against their lifting surfaces, and whose free flight does not depend on an engine. Mostly these types of aircraft are intended for routine operation without engines, though engine failure can force other types of aircraft to glide. There are a wide variety of types differing in the construction of their wings, aerodynamic efficiency, location of the pilot and controls. Some may have power-plants to take off and/or extend flight. Some are designed simply to descend, but the most common varieties exploit meteorological phenomena to maintain or even gain height. These types are principally used for the air sports of gliding, hang gliding and paragliding. Perhaps the most familiar type is the paper aeroplane. ... Read more
