5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
It had a lot of good trails that I would not have known about otherwise. It has trails for every skill level and gives instructions on how to get to the trails. It even includes an elevation map and picutres from the trails. My only complaint is that it defines the trails as easy, easy to moderate, moderate, moderate to difficult or difficult, but some of the trails are rated easy like the cheseapeke bay trail(which is the only trail in the book which is not mountain biking) and rockburn regional park. They are totally different, chesepeake bay is flat and no obstacles whatsoever while rockburn has obstacles and minor hills and doubletrack. The two are very different but rated the same so it would be better if it was rated on a scale of maybe 1-10 or something like that.To one of the other reviewers who said it didn't have real mountain biking-the book has gambrill in it, which is arugably the hardest mountain biking in the state and some of the hardest in the country. If thats not "real" mountain biking than what is?THere is plenty of real mountain biking in it, and this book was reccomended by many people to me.I would recomend this too, you should defintly buy this if you plan on going mountainbiking, whether you are a begginer, intermediatae or advanced biker.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misses almost all the good spots to MTB in Maryland/DC
This book is pretty much a joke of a guidebook. Most of the "trails" are things like bike paths and not really mountain biking...It pretty much misses all of the great trails in Maryland

5-0 out of 5 stars Great roundup
I live in DC and it's difficult to find a good ride without taking an afternoon drive. This book is really thorough and helpful, with places I wouldn't have otherwise known about and more info than I already knew about other places. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best mtn bike guide book I own
I wouldn't change a thing. All the best rides with excellent maps (incl elevation change) and directions.Wish I could find comparable guides for other areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource
This book has helped me find a number of great rides. My only negative comment would be that I would have liked more detailed maps.Given the difficulty of packing all of them into a single book, perhaps that is unreasonable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
If you want to learn the mountain biking trails in marin, you need this good.It covers all the great trails.Clear directions and nice topo profiles help prepare you for the climbs and descents.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missed by a mile
I have a huge collection of mountain bike guidebooks and I rate this as one of the worst. Before moving to Santa Fe I purchased this book and was given the impression that there wasn't much great riding to be had. When an author includes a paved bike path in a mountain bike guidebook you have to figure there isn't much out there.Since living here, I have found so many outstanding rides that were not even mentioned in the book. That is what often happens when an out of towner comes to write a guide. They get a few of the classics like the wonderful South Boundary Trail, but the locals don't always let them in on the goods.I gave it one star for including South Boundary.Otherwise, not much of an effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars as good as it gets
This is as good as a mtb guide gets. The focus is small enough that it can really cover the 3 areas thoroughly, the advise is good, the trail selection is good, and the maps are...standard Falconguide maps, which are OK.D'Antonio doesn't make the mistake of underrating the technical difficulty of his trails. Two caveats: he omits the wonderful Horse Thief trail in Taos--go to Gearing Up bike shop and they'll sell you a stunningly good map; and he tells you to ride the Chamisa Tr in Sante Fe backwards--take his advice and you'll do all the dirt uphill and all the pavement downhill.

3-0 out of 5 stars good overall but lacking important closure info
This book has some great rides with good descriptions and directions. It is lacking some critical closure information that a NEW guidebook should have. For example, the Otero Canyon ride has been closed, but this book does not mention any access issues at all. Some similar problems on other trails. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful
I started with the book "Short Bike Rides in Colorado," which was okay, except the majority of the rides involved first driving 200-300 miles from Denver. The ride itself was short, but the entire trip would take sitting in traffic the whole day.

This book fits the bill much better.49 rides split between Denver and Boulder (appropriate title) of varying difficulty. The author includes not only the level of difficulty (technical and aerobic), but the type of trail (singletrack, doubletrack, ATV road, etc.) and how many miles of each the trail consists of.Extremely helpful, as I'm not a big fan of singletrack so I will probably save those trails for last.

I also appreciated the tiny bits of humor scattered throughout, particularly the definition of doubletrack where he states "the other rut will always look smoother."I biked Barr Lake after 3 days of pouring rain (learned my lesson, believe me) and this was exactly my experience!

I'm looking forward to exploring most of these trails soon. This book provides an excellent starting point to know where to go first.

EDIT:I'm guessing Mr. D'Antonio is assuming more than a basic level of skill in his readers.Waterton Canyon, which is rated a difficulty of 1, was basically a dirt road.Beautiful country and really, really easy.I hit Deer Creek Canyon next based on his rating of 2-3, thinking it couldn't be that much more difficult.

Either there has been some massive erosion since the book was published in 2003, or the author saves his highest rating of 5 for biking around the rim of an active volcano. The trail was INSANELY difficult and I ended up walking most of the first mile up before giving up and turning around. This trail includes the "Wall of Shame" which has several YouTube videos devoted to far more experienced bikers trying (and mostly failing) to navigate it.

I'll still use the book as a starting point to find trails, but will check out YouTube footage before packing up all my gear to head out for another fun-filled hour of pushing my bike uphill over near-impassable conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
It has good information about trails, but I cant seem to find any really technical trails near boulder.

3-0 out of 5 stars General/Practical
A good book to pick up if you are new to the area, but there are some trails in the area that are not mentioned in the book?

It is small enough to stuff in the back of your jersey pocket, or hydration pack.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the BEST book for mountain biking near Denver
I have purchased the FalconGuide books for Moab and Fruita both are great. But this is the one that I use almost daily. It has a ton of rides that are 30 minutes or less from where I live.I ride trails in this book 3 - 4 times weekly.I save the ones that are a little farther away for the weekend. But all in all a great book.Nice size to so you can take it with you when you ride.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of area trail networks
This book provides a good listing of trails in the Denver/Boulder area. There are maps for each trail and altitude charts to show the elevation gain. The directions to the trail heads are accurate.

The one thing Idon't like is that it only gives information about one trail for eachsystem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take it on every trip!
this is a great book! it has maps, directions, general info, pics, and more! I take it on every trip I do and have made multiple day trips with the information in the book...

It is well worth the cost if you are looking for hidden gems, something new or just some info on the area trails.

The only down side is that it does not have a couple trails that are fairly popular, such as the Honey Run trail in Osage Beach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by Steve Henry!
If you want to know which trails to ride in the ozarks then this is the book for you.Detailed maps, reviews, pictures, and descriptions are provided for each trail.Steve Henry has also written excellent books on camping and hiking in the ozarks.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
If you yearn to discover more gorgeous single track in the Ozarks, you'll find this book falls a bit short.Riding on fire roads, to me, just isn't mountain biking.

As much as I love Mr. Henry's book, "The Best of Tent Camping, The Ozarks," I was very disappointed in this book on mountain biking. Many of the trails that are recommended here are merely gravel roads that a lover of single track won't enjoy.Mr. Henry is great at directing a lover of the outdoors to great camping and hiking, but, unfortunately, when it comes to why most of us ride, he just doesn't get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Cycling in the Ozarks!

3-0 out of 5 stars So So mountain bike guide
I just returned from a trip to Seattle and hoped this book would be useful in finding some nice mountain bike trails. I feel that the book was too full of 1 to 5 mile "rides". I get the impression Mr. Zilly felt like he had to pad the book by filling it with these extremely short rides. I also bought the Puget Sound mountain bike guide by Santo Crisuolo and was happy to see it filled with more rides in the 15-30+ mile range. Santo's book also had better maps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only mtn Bike book I have
I have had this book for about 3 weeks now.I have gone on 3 rides in the book.So far instructions have been clear.Lots of choices for trails, I'm looking forward to doing some new ones from the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Seattle Area Mt Biking.
Good driving directions, good riding directions, good guide to what is actually at the trail. All around a great addition for anyone just getting going in Mt. Biking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even in the dark, this book got me out of the woods!
As a visitor to Seattle, I used this book to find some good local mtn.bike trails. The author of the book has detailed every aspect of thesetrails to the mile.If you use the information and follow your bikecomputer, you will find your way around some awesome trails.I wouldsuggest photocopying the pages and carrying them with you as the book istoo bulky unless you have a big backpack.Luckily, when we rode theMiddlefork trail at Snoqualmie we were smart enough to tear the pages outof the book.We misjudged our timing especially due to some of theobstacles we faced on the trail i.e. water crossings, fallen trees, etc. With one light (one burned out in 2 hours) and three people, we followedthe book to the "t" and hiked approx. 6 miles of this trail inthe dark.Without those torn out pages, we'd have spent the night inSnoqualmie!Great book.Buy it if you want to ride the trails in Seattle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Seattle Area Mountain Bike Trail Resource
If you're new to mountain biking or new to the area this book is a "must have."The book is filled with rides within 90 minutes drive of Seattle.Directions to trailheads are excellent, routes provide agood overview of each area, and route maps provide adequate diection.Thisis THE guide for Seattle-area mountain biking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Rides, Great Local Info and an Exceptional Read
I've just finished this book for the 3rd time. Each time I smile and dream about Colorado.I can smell the summer showers on the horizon. Now I know how to survive if I get caught again in one of those instant season changes from summer to winter. You know the type, that happen at about 10,000 feet, with a 50 degree temperature plummet in about 45 minutes, that leave you praying for a fleece and a quick decent.
Want to know about historical archaeological digs? Grizzly Bear Myths? Best place to find a burrito as big as your head? Pumas? Surely toxic ceramic-like mud? No???? You just want to know about trail riding? Well this is the book for that as well.Single and double tracks, wash boards, roads, the whole enchilada......mmmmm green chili.Who woulda thunk a trail guide would be so entertaining and yet so thorough? Buy this book now for any of the above reasons, or just buy it for the pure enjoyable read that it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed for the trails I tried.
I purchased this book based upon the other reviews of 5 stars. I brought this book with me to China Camp in Marin. It was woefully inadequate as to the representation of the trails. There are a multitude of trails that are not shown nor mentioned in the book. Very disappointing and a waste of money for me. I ended up purchasing "China Camp State Park" map by 360MAPS at REI to get a better representation of that area. I would not recommend this book if you are interested in detail of the area of your interest. Get a good TOPO map instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book well worth buying...
I bought this book after meeting Skye at a presentation he gave at REI in Berkeley. It is obvious that he really knows the bay area well and of course loves mountain biking. The trail maps are very easy to understand and he does a good job of explaining how to stay on the correct trail. I've found some really cool trails because of this book: currently one of my favorites is Bolinas Ridge Trail. I've got a few other books but I really like how clear the elevation maps are and he rates each ride in a number of ways in the beginning: by mileage, feet of climbing, rides with jumps, extreme drops, lonely & crowded rides, the level of maintenance, if they are flat/steep, scenic, creek/river rides, lake rides, wildlife rides, etc.

He does a really good job. Like others have said he even recommends a place to eat after the ride. It's pretty current too (2008) so the descriptions are up to date accurate. It got 40 rides, you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars great local guide!
Skye Kraft definitely knows his stuff! This is a great guide, written by a local that knows his way around the bay area.Kind of a must have for anyone spending time or living the SF Bay area that wants to know the best mountain bike trails.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy lay out, very little for the beginner or low intermediate
I would have to agree with Serge's review above.I have not done Sullivan's Canyon, but when I read the text, I could see that it did not match what was laid out on the map.It makes me very hesitant to do other trails for the first time based on this book, as they might not be labeled properly. Also, the "Key-At-A-Glance" section is sloppy. On some rides Technical Difficulty is listed on the third line and Aerobic Difficulty is listed on the fourth line, but on other rides they are reversed. This could get you into trouble if you confuse the two and do what you thought was a 5 aerobic difficulty that is actually a 5 technical difficulty you are not ready for.And on Sullivan it is inexplicably rated as "Moderate" with no number or aerobic rating at all.

My second complaint is which trails were chosen for the book.I say there are only 33 rides listed because I am not counting the 7 non-LA County rides in here. There is a section called South Bay/Cleveland National Forest. It should really be marked Orange County/San Bernardino County. There are no South Bay rides listed in here (Torrance, Rancho Palos Verdes, etc.).There are other LA County proper rides which are not listed at all in here for some reason, such as Turnbull Canyon. If one had to include some OC rides, why not list some of the plenty that are way closer to LA than El Moro or San Juan?

My third complaint is that most of the rides in this book are geared for the advanced rider. The back cover of this books says "whether you're new to mountain biking or an experienced downhiller".I counted 33 LA rides with say 14 being advanced (either having at least one 5 rating or double 4s), 10 rides being high intermediate (at least one 4 rating), 7 rides being low to moderate intermediate (at least one 3 rating) and only two beginner rides, one of which looked like you could do it on your beach cruiser. As an intermediate rider there's really only about 10 rides I'd attempt in here.I would not recommend it for the beginner as there's barely anything in it for you.If you are an advanced rider that will try anything, you'll probably be fine with this book. But then again, if you are an advanced rider, you probably don't need this book unless you just moved here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Edgy, humorous, and detailed, this a fabulous book. Another reviewer has noted that the Pacific Ocean was on the right side of the map.The reviewer, though, did not bother to mention that if you turn the map so that the north arrow is pointing up (common sense), the Pacific Ocean magically reassumes it's correct position. This book is the most up to date and thorough book on LA mountain biking available.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent maps and directions
The problem with this book is exemplified by the map on the inside cover: an overview map of the LA county rides. It has the Pacific Ocean on the right (yes, right, not left). I looked at it for a while. Flipped it sideways, but then you have to read names sideways. Weird. Then I went to check out a ride I know well(Bulldog Loop)to see if the description makes sense to me. Again, it took me a while to figure out what the author is talking about, because the ride direction arrows on the map are reversed relative to what is described in the text. "Must be a typo", I said and went to look at another ride I know very well "Sullivan ridge to Sullivan Canyon...". Here things got even more weird. The arrows are reversed again. He really describes a ride up what is commonly known as Westridge Road (properly labeled West Mandeville Fire Rd on their map), but the text refers to the Sullivan Ridge Fire Road "...the Sullivan Ridge Fire Road provides a great warm up for this ride... and "the entrance to the Sullivan ridge Fire Road" which is really ways away on Amalfi. And the funny thing is that his map does have Sullivan Ridge Fire Road, not being part of this ride. Very confusing. I wonder how screwed up the rest of the ride descriptions are. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar Guidebook!
An Unbelievable book! Having biked parts of this trail myself, The attention to detail that Ms. Lankford has supplied is astouding! I have read many guidebooks covering many topics, and this is one of the best, from the mileage markers, to the detailed maps, to the great photos. Additionally, the book doubles as a great adventure story of two slightly crazy, but totally ambitious girls! I reccomend this book without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it and bike it.
I just got Andrea Lankford's guide and getting my hands on it is bittersweet: I love the book... but really could have used this guide a couple of months ago. In November and December of 2002 I became the first solo thru biker of the Arizona Trail (AZT) and the third thru biker ever. During my journey I relied on photocopied maps, second hand advice, and a crumpled road map-certainly not the thorough guidebook that is available today. Lankford supplies us long distance adventurers with a guide complete with accurate trail descriptions, exact mileage, humor, an easily readable text, maps, and photos. Lankford is truly adept at writing a guide after thru biking the AZT, thru hiking the 2160-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and serving as a National Park Service EMT/Forest Ranger. They said Andrea Lankford and her partner Beth Overton could'nt hack this 800-mile mountain, canyon, plateau, and desert route, but they were wrong. And if anyone ever said that a great guide could not come out of their expedition, they were clearly incorrect as well. As being the only other person to bike this gorgeous and challenging trail besides Andrea Lankford's friend Beth, I can tell ya one thing for sure: this baby gets 5 stars. ... Read more

Product Description
The southern Appalachian and Smoky Mountains are some of the oldest mountains in the world. They may not scrape the sky like the monsters out West, but in trade you get an unbroken carpet of stunning natural beauty: serene, old growth forests with generous shade, secluded coves bursting with wildflowers, craggy granite overlooks where Native Americans once kept watch, and gently rolling valleys that breathe out peaceful antiquity. Finding the perfect trails is an art in this landscape, and Mountain Bike! The Southern Appalachian and Smoky Mountains is an indispensable friend for any fat-tire Picasso. You get the most detailed information on almost 100 of the best rides throughout the mountains, including tours through the Great Smokies, Pisgah, Nantahala, and Cherokee National Forests, northern Georgia, the Foothills, and the popular Tsali Trails. Author Steve Jones knows his Appalachians, and he's ridden all over them to uncover trails for every mountain biker's ability and tastes. If it's good riding, it's profiled here. Each route profile features at-a-glance key information, a thorough ride description, a detailed trail map, helpful sources of information, proximity of important services, valuable commentary on elevation changes and possible hazards and a rescue index. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but geting a bit out of date.
This book is full of great information, but at 9 years old it's no longer a definitive guide to riding in the area. But with that said it was still a great resource to have to add to local info and a topo map for a couple of IL riders to spend a week in the Crested Butte area.

3-0 out of 5 stars CB guide review
This is a brief pocket guide for use while on the trail. Many details and simple, trail by trail descriptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent guide

3-0 out of 5 stars a place to start
A good summary of some of the rides in San Diego. The instructions are pretty good (I have had a little trouble almost every description) but the author is a little conservative regarding open areas. He describes areasas closed that other guidebooks, rangers etc. say are wide open. It's likea trail book written by a lawyer who is afraid of getting sued.So takethe boundary descriptions with a gain of salt.Otherwise an excellentoverview of trails in far Southern CA. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome trail guide for Oklahoma and Texas
Since I am the author I think this is the best trail guide book on the market for my two favorite states, Oklahoma and Texas.I worked my ...off on this project, it is the second guide book I have done about mountain biking in these two states, actually the second edition of the same book.

I had such a blast working on this project but was quite glad to see it finished. Now I have a blast going back and rereading it and remembering what fun I had while out on research trips. Most were a pleasure, I got to meet some great folks and do some very excellent riding, though there were a few trips that bordered on miserable due to bad weather or general fatigue on my part as I neared the end of traveling for research.

My hat is off to the many bike clubs and excellent shops I encountered along the way, and all the super people who helped me complete this project.

Thanx to you all, hope to see you and ride again soon.
