Biking has become an increasingly popular hobby -- even more so these days with the astronomical prices of gas. Now in a newly updated third edition, "Ride Guide: New Jersey Mountain Biking" by mountain biking expert Joshua M. Pierce is a comprehensive guidebook to mountain biking rails throughout the Garden State. The twenty-six rides include both low-impact and hard-core trails that take the rider through the varied and occasionally spectacular terrain that New Jersey offers. "Ride Guide: New Jersey Mountain Biking" is enhanced with the inclusion of practical information as to levels of trail difficulty, turn-by-turn cue sheets and maps, as well as accurate and succinct descriptions of topography, trail conditions, and points of interest. Also very highly recommended for regional bike enthusiasts is Joel D. Sendek's "Ride Guide: Mountain Biking in The New York Metro Area, third edition" (9780933855267, $15.95).

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a completely new edition of this book for 2007
This isn't necessarily a review, since I am the author, but I thought that this new edition warranted a comment. I completely rewrote this book over the past year for this third edition. If you look at the previous reviews of the book, I address all of the issues brought up by reviewers. I re-rode, re-plotted and re-measured every mile of trail in the book. I added nine new parks that include every place to mountain bike that I know of in South Jersey (including Estell Manor, Gloucester Community College and Wharton State Park).
New Jersey gets a bad rap from lots of people, but the truth is there is a lot of excellent riding in the Garden State.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wish I read the other reviews first!
I gave this book a token 2 stars because I wasn't actually able to try any of the trails for myself...So, I don't know how good the trail maps or descriptions are. All I can report is that there isn't anything here for those of us in the soutern part of the state! For mountain bikers in S. Jersey, I recommend Bob Di'Antonio's "Mountain Bike America: Greater Philadelphia Area." This book covers some S. Jersy rides as well as nearby Philadelpha and Eastern Pennsylvania.

1-0 out of 5 stars The title is misleading...
A more discriptive title would be, "Ride Guide Mountain Biking the Counties of Northern and Central New Jersey." For those of you living in the southern part of the state...look elsewhere. All of Southern New Jersey is ignored.

Wharton State Forest is the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System. It covers part of Atlantic, Burlinton, and Camden counties and has some great off road riding. Lebanon St. Forest is historic and includes a major section of the 50 mile Batona trail. A major mountain bike publication listed Lebanon St. Forest in an article called "Five Great Places to Ride Double Track." These areas' as well as the rest of Southern New Jersey are completely ignored in "New Jersey Mountain Biking"

Hey Josh, buddy. Come on...if you're going to write a book about riding in New Jersy, how about including the rest of us!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew?
I took up mountain biking last summer (1999). It has been a great source of challenge and pleasure to me.

Finding this book has made such an adventure out of biking in NJ! It is well-written, has great maps with themileage and turns and a good rating system so you know what you are gettinginto before you leave. Driving directions to the spots and explanations ofwhere to park, whether or not there is a fee... it's got everything youneed to know. He really did a good job of researching the book and a nicetouch is the inclusion of other nearby sites (relevant to the place youpick).

One possible improvement: There's a map of NJ showing all thesites, it would be nice if the page numbers were listed there and the trailratings were also included on the map. As it is now, you need to go to 3different pages to find all of that info. Hardly worth mentioning, but ifthere was one thing to make it better, that would be it, in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!--
Lots of detail about the areas.Concise, laid out like other good guide books with standard sets of info about each area.I haven't actually been on any of the trails described yet, but I want to now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for the adventurous offroad enthusiast
This book covers many of the great rides that most of the population areas of the state can ride. We have particularly enjoyed the level of detailof the routes off of highway 410.The author's superlative explanationswere so enticing that we ventured the 100 miles from our home to test themout--ever point was justified. We have been back 3 times in the last monthto try them again.Without a book like this, you just have to take yourchances...with the odds not always in your favor.

Each documented routehas great directions on how to get there and how to get through the routeand back out with meticulous attention to the key scenic points, thelevel-setting of the difficulty, and the waypoints (in 10ths of miles).

On our last ride, we were discussing the ride up Bald Mountain withstrangers who were also carrying the same book with them on their bikes. We're not the only advocates.

All-in-all, Kirkendall's book is a greatmotivator to get out and enjoy the splendor of this state on twowheels.

You can't be disappointed by this book. ... Read more

Serious Mountain Biking
By Ann Trombley

Reviewed by Arnie Baker

Overview: * Look Elsewhere

I looked forward to reading Serious Mountain Biking. Ann Trombley's professional career overlapped that of Jimena Florit, a rider I coached for a decade. It was fun to read about Ann's exploits, and to read about her races and other competitors I knew through traveling to some of those same races myself and through Jimena's reports.

Ann's book covers three areas for the aspiring racer: Equipment, skills, and training. Her messages generally follow traditional wisdom. She quotes others and offers her own advice.
The writing style is casual, which will appeal to many readers. To me, however, it was too breezy and inexact. Her style and the book's editors allow descriptions that too often make sense only if you already know what Ann is trying to say.

Equipment
Ann repeats traditional fit concepts from road biking. Although she addresses some mountain bike fit issues, she misses the opportunity to write about mountain bike specific fit issues-such as brake-lever placement.

Skills
The tips and information are general, rudimentary, inexact, and sometimes wrong. This section will help many riders with basics, but it is mostly pabulum. Brian Lopes' Mastering Mountain Biking Skills is much better.

Training
Ann knows the jargon, many of the concepts and principles, and gives examples of helpful workouts. Unfortunately, these are jumbled up, she forgets her audience, and she sometimes appears to be in over her head.

Index
Indexing seems to be a lost art, certainly in many of the Human Kinetics books I have reviewed. The index does not contain 8 of the 9 entries that I thought of checking. For example, although discussed as major topics in the book the following are not directly indexed: descending, intervals, heart rate, power, periodization, macrocycle, perceived exertion, and VO2 max. Climbing was the only subject indexed.

Summary
Ann has a contribution to make. She has good information to communicate. Unfortunately, she does not do so effectively. An editor with mountain-biking knowledge might have helped.

Examples
The following are examples illustrating my criticisms, including poor writing, editing, or bad information:

Equipment
Page 5.
"Selecting Your Style"
This is a poor heading. The section that follows is about selecting your bike to match your riding style. It is not about deciding whether to be a downhiller or climber.

Page 14.
"Frame Size. All frame builders are not alike."
I think what Ann means is: Frame builders determine frame size differently. That is what she should write. Her sentence might be referring to building materials, frame geometry, or frame rigidity.

Page 18.
Under crank arm length. "Larger crank arms enable you to push bigger gears at lower RPMs and smaller crank arms enable you to push smaller gears at higher RPMs."
Ann is not writing about beefier cranks, she is writing about longer cranks. The author should have written, and the editor should have corrected to, longer and shorter, rather than larger and smaller.

Page 18.
"You can determine crank arm length by your height using table 1.2."
Editing issue. Substandard English sentence construction. You determine crank arm length by measuring it, or looking at the dimensions engraved into the cranks. Editor should have corrected to: You can determine a suggested crank arm length from your height by using table 1.2.

Page 19.
"Saddle Position. ...put your cranks in a horizontal position in relation to the ground and drop the plum line or straight edge from your kneecap straight down. It should fall directly in front of the pedal spindle (see figure 1.5)."
What does directly mean? In the referenced figure, the plumb line from the knee falls a couple of inches ahead of the pedal spindle. Bad choice of picture, unless chosen to illustrate a too-far forward saddle position.

Page 22.
"Getting Your Gear"
Poor heading choice. This heading comes directly after sections on which type of bike to buy and bike position. I thought "Getting Your Gear" might be about where to buy your bike. Alternatively, perhaps about what gears to purchase-for example, triple chain ring selection. What followed was a brief section on shoes, shorts, and helmets. Editor should have corrected to a better heading choice, for example: Accessories.

Skills
Page 45.
"Countersteering and Braking. Countersteering on a bicycle is similar to the position of the wheels as seen in racecar driving. Basically, the front wheel is turned away from the direction of the turn..."
Ann misses the basic concept. It is about leaning the bike more than the body. Race cars do not lean and countersteer. Maybe Ann meant racing motorcycles. Even if so, in countersteering a motorcycle the application of power makes it different from countersteering a bicycle. The whole paragraph that follows is confusing and hinders more than helps.

Page 60.
"Braking Guidelines. The best time to brake is never."
I agree that many mountain bikers are too tentative and "overbrake." However, those reading this section are probably already frightened about mountain bike descents, want to become more skillful in mastering braking control in turns, or otherwise want to improve their braking. Ann's first sentence immediately sets the wrong tone, and risks losing her reader.

Page 62.
"As a general rule, keep your eyes scanning between 5 and 10 feet down the trail at all times."
No. Not nearly far enough. Perhaps 15 feet ahead, 5 feet up.

Training
Page 129
"After you have determined what races you will do, highlight the ones most important to you, such as qualifiers for the World Championships."
This first paragraph has me wondering if this book is written for an audience of less than 20 racers.

Page 143
"A power meter measures how much energy (in watts) is transferred onto the pedals every second."
No. Energy is in kilojoules or calories. Energy divided by time is power, measured in watts.

Page 143
"Measuring power is currently the most efficient way of measuring your intensity while on a bike."
What does the word efficient mean here? Efficiency in the physics, engineering, and sports science sense has to do with power produced versus power consumed. For example, athletes are 22% efficient, losing about 78% of their calories burned as heat.
A careful editor might have substituted effective.

Page 143
"The amount of power a cyclist is generating remains constant with a change in the environment whether it be the cyclist's core temperature or external considerations."
Sorry. No. Overheated, a cyclist will drop their power output.

Page 144.
"Once you get your HRmax, you can calculate your VO2 max."
No. You can impute VO2 max from ramped power (My formula: watts/kg x 12 + 3.3). You cannot do it from heart rate max. Knowing heart rate max is 200, you have no idea about VO2. Could be 20 mL/kg/min. Could be 80 mL/kg/min.

Page 195.
"Keeping Your Speed. Being able to keep your speed up in a race lasting more than 2 hours is a skill that every racer needs to work on."
At first blush, sounds good. However, no. Not for downhillers. Not for short-track riders. Moreover, it is a fitness, not a skill we are talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timm shows us Singletrack Heaven
I'll admit that I'm biased, just like an earlier reviewer, because I've ridden with and consider Timm a friend. However, I've got to take issue with a reviewer who lightly criticized this book as being lacking for a "newbie flatlander."

In his Introduction, Timm makes no bones about the fact that "This book is about singletrack: twisty hardpack, slaloming through trees and roots and rocks, rising through heartbreaking climbs, and descending in sometimes frightening fashion."

I applaud the newbie flatlander for taking a mountain biking vacation. Really, I do. I think it's the coolest thing, and I hope he takes more of them. But most people who take mountain biking vacations ARE people who are looking for trails like the ones in this book. And we can't change the landscape here in western NC...the fact of the matter is we have a lot of up and down, a lot of rocks and roots, and we usually get a lot of rain. If we want easier riding, we either stick to the fire roads or we travel somewhere in the eastern half of the state.

This book has what so many guidebooks lack: personality. The reason it's a great book is because Timm makes the trails seem, on paper, almost as much fun as they are on your bike. I've owned this book for a few years, and it never fails to snap me out of my doldrums when I can't decide where to ride. Just open a page, read the description, and I'm ready to go! I may even go ride Kitsuma today...

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a letdown...
I bought this book to assist with planning for a trip to the Mt. Pisgah region.

POSITIVES: The writing was in a fairly entertaining style, and the trail descriptions and maps had lots of details.

NEGATIVES: There was no flow in the Mt. Pisgah section--the trails weren't arranged in sequence, neither by location nor by difficulty. Also, there were precious little recommendations for newbie flatlanders such as my son and I.The author seemed more interested in reporting his own experiences than in considering the needs of all his potential readers.

The book's OK, but I would only recommend it as an adjunct to the excellent "Western NC: Pisgah" book by Jim Parham.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, though showing its age
Although it is dated, and trails have changed since 2003 this book remains a must for NC bikers for its range of trails, readability, elevations.Sets a high standard for mountain biking books.Trails range from easy to hard. If I were to buy one book for NC trails this would be the one hands down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Biking North Carolina
I found this book to be a real comfort to my coming vacation.

The trail discriptions are right on, along with the Elevations made my selections easy. I can't wait to spend a week in the mountians of Northern Carolina..

5-0 out of 5 stars The best N.C. mountain bike book I own.
If you're going to mountain bike N.C. you need to own this book. It's easily the best one I own. The maps, directions, and charts are great and easy to follow. The rides are varied with all skill levels included. And this guy Muth has a great writing style, loaded with pesonality. My only suggestion is that he includes Dupont when he revises. Thanks Timm! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Biking Phoenix by Bruce Grubbs May Result in a Trip to the Emergency Ward
This publication is an earnest effort to provide a guide to Phoenix-area mountain biking trails. However, it contains inaccurate information and is woefully outdated. Many of the trails have either been encroached upon by new housing development or are presently closed to the public altogether (ie. Devils Hole in the Tonto National Forest).Descriptions of certain trails and the level of difficulty is also cavalier. It is irresponsible of Bruce Grubbs to author a publication on a sport as hazardous as mountain biking when he is clearly not an expert. There are some very good mtb trail guides for Phoenix out there; I'd recommend giving this one a miss. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Guide Book for Beginners
This is a good book with many interesting places to ride. The maps and directions are very detailed allowing the reader to easilyfind the featured trails in the book.

The difficulty ratings are exaggerated however. The book seems to be geared toward beginning riders. All of the trails that I have checked out have turned out to be very easy regarding technical skill level. If you have ANY experience I would reduce the difficulty level by 1 (e.g. difficult to moderate, moderate to easy).

The book is fairly thorough, but there are many great spots left out of the book.As far as the valley goes it leaves out what I would consider some of the Greatest Off-Road Bicycle Rides.MacDonald Forest, Rickreal, McKenzie River trail, Oakridge, etc...

I would reccomend the book, but I would HIGHLY reccomend talking to your local bike shop for the hidden treasures of Oregon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guidebook

This guidebook includes a section on mountain bicyle camping and biking withyour dog. I've always wanted to take my gear with me and camp overnight andthis section was very helpful. It lists outdoor vendors that carry campinggear and gives you a sample list of what you should bring. This book evenhas overnight a trail called "Haystack Lake" that is a good trailfor those wanting to try their first overnight trip. I also have a dog andthe "Mountain Biking with Your Dog" section gave a lot ofpractical advice I could use and also listed vendors that sell dog gear.I'm so glad to finally see a book that not only describes great trails butalso is a great reference for other aspects of mountain biking!

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome maps

Product Description
The first guide to this exciting, fast-paced, demanding sport by and for women. Which manufacturers make bikes and accessories especially for a woman's shorter torso, smaller hands, and narrower hips? How can a woman ensure she's getting the best possible service at a male-oriented bike shop? What exercises can a woman do to improve her upper body strength and thus her ability to enjoy long climbs and challenging trails? How can a woman prevent a sore rear-end on a bumpy ride? These and scores of other questions are answered in Women's Mountain Biking. With enthusiasm enough to infect even the skeptic, Jennifer Kulier shows that mountain biking --including tough, single-track riding --is very much for women too. She inspires and informs novice cyclists and experienced riders alike with this complete guide, providing the latest information on equipment, riding techniques, and safety, as well as practical tips from women mountain bikers that the guys won't know. This once-macho sport is waking up to the power of women, who are joining the ranks of mountain bikers in ever greater numbers. It's time for women's particular requirements and concerns --from bike size and frame design to extreme techniques and off-road repairs --to be addressed. Kulier does so carefully, candidly, and from a woman's perspective. From 1996 to 1997, women's participation in on-road mountain biking rose by 45.5 percent (the greatest annual increase of all 59 sports surveyed), and in off-road mountain biking women's participation rose by 8.8 percent, the ninth greatest increase, according to National Sporting Goods Association statistics. ... This book has a lot of useful information for female riders who are just starting out in the sport. For those of us who have been at it for a few years, this is likely stuff that you already know.I bought this book looking for a few more tips on training geared towards women and this is really just more of a guide on how to start riding, rules of riding, basic bike maintenance, etc.I would like elsewhere for training tips.

It gives you confidence enough to get out there and gain more confidence! It's well designed, rugged, and has enough photos and good layout to make it an easy, enjoyable read. Plus, the back is filled with great references and resources. Thanks Jennifer for a great book! Is there a Mountain Biking for Women II in the works?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fitting In finally.
I've been riding for years and couldn't figure out why I always seemed to be behind the pack, always the slowest and hurt more at the end.

I picked up this book and began to get the picture. My bike didn't fit me atall.I'd been given it by my boyfriend at the time and it was heavy andoversized and caused me to ache. All the extra weight of it made me theslowest of the pack, and the wrong fit - made it impossible for me to jumpor descend comfortably.

I found this book to answer alot of the questionsthat the "Guys" never seemed to mention.

If you're thinking ofgetting into riding or are thinking of getting out of it because your nothaving fun.Try this first. The tips, ideas and techniques can make allthe difference.

It's well written.Great layout and design.Veryimformative and helpful.Whether its single track or road riding - thisthe information you can use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this book
This is one of the dumbest mountain biking books I ever read. The section on how-to-bunnyhop is hilarious. This is a skill much sought-after skill by many avid mtn cyclists, akin to learning bumps in skiing and what does this book offer?Absolutely nothing. There is a picture of a guy bunnyhopping and the author just goes on to say that clipless pedals help, but does not explain how some bmx-ers and flat pedal users can jump as high as 4 feet.Huh?Did I missed something?Retarded book.Skip!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good photos but lacks detail
The photos used in this book are nice, but I found them to be lacking in detail, especially when maintenance procedures are described. Additionally, the text is vague and too simplified at times.A beginners' book shouldnot necessarily translate into less detail.Overall, the book covers abroad range of topics and is good for absolute beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginner mountain bikers
This is a very informative book. It was written with the beginner/intermediate mountain biker in mind. The book take you from the simple steps of mounting your bike, to basic maintenence and care. Fromtricks and trails, to races and upgrades, it is an excellent beginnermountain bike handbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Mtn biking Durango, and more
This book does a fine job of giving the mountain biker many ideas forrides around town. But its real value is in the high-country rides, whichabound in the San Juan Mountains surrounding Durango. I've also used thisbook for hiking and trail-running. You need an odometer to know exactlywhere you are on the ride in relation to the book, but on most trailsthat's not a problem. If there is a criticism of this book, it is thatthere are not enough easy rides. The author lists a few in the back, butnot with much detail. Many of these rides are not for the beginner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
This book has everything you need to get to Moab, pick a trail that is right for you and have a great time. There are overall technical ratings for each trail, individual technical ratings for each part of every trail, elevation maps, detailed overhead maps, instructions for particularly troublesome areas...it is all here.Someone said that it would not fit in a Camelbak, but it easily fits in one of the smaller pockets of my MULE.When I'm there next week, it will definitely not be left back at camp, but will be with me on every mile of slickrock that I ride.Do not buy Lee Bridgers' book! This one is less expensive, of higher quality and you can take it with you wherever you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moab mtn biking...really
This book caught my attention. The trail descriptions, maps, and difficulty ratings really provide a pretty good estimation of what to expect on each trail.(Which really comes in handy when matching up technical ability and endurance to particular trails.)Believe me, some of the trails mentioned are extremely challenging... and you don't want to get stuck on a trail that you aren't ready to ride. Please follow the advice given on the trails listed when it comes to your endurance/technical ability. This could mean the difference between injuring yourself or hoofing it back to the trailhead on foot.

If you have never ridden in or around Moab, this is a must-have book.Even as someone who has ridden in the area many times, I still use this to select which trail or trails I want to ride depending on the amount of time I have each day.

My advice: buy this book, read it, stuff it in your bag, and head to Moab. While it's too large to easily fit in a camelback, read through it at night while in the hotel planning out the next day's adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Title -- still the real deal!
I found this in a Moab Bike shop.. Rim Cyclery or something like that.. anyway.. I had to buy it! It was the one I thought I ordered on Amazon before I got to Moab... but apparently the publisher just released a second edition and put the old edition's title on another book!!

This edition.. the "pocket guide" is the one you want if you're gonna actually get on a bike and ride.

It gives a good flavor description of the ride and the directions were spot-on... The profiles were good too. I really liked the maps.. they allowed good navigation. Not overwhelming .. just right.. This guy obviously put his heart and soul into this book.

Obviously this author's heart and soul reside on Moab's trails! ... Read more
