4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book for the first time mountain biker in Ohio
A useful book for the first timer to mountain biking in Ohio. Ohio sensibly divided into regions. Each region forms a chapters so routes which are close together geographically are also close together in the book. The edition (2000) we bought (second hand) is a bit dated, some of the routes have changed or been extended and new routes not in the book have been built. Having said this the book gives a good indication of where mountain bike routes can be found in Ohio and having identified these locations more up to date information can be obtained by researching the locations else where i.e. on the internet. On some of the routes in the book the sketch maps and list of instructions were all we required to complete the route but on other routes a good local map was essential.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
Finally someone has done a through guide book of ohio. The information in this book could be a little more up to date, but that is a little hard to due with trail expansions and closures.I'mextremely happy to see the book because I met the author while riding at mickeys mountain, in norteast ohio, with two friends. Although the author put some of the pictures with different trails . I'm on page 137, in the front. Needless to say I was stoked to see my photo in print. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars lots of roads
This is one in the ubiquitous Falconguide series, and it has the same virtues and vices of all of them.Virtues: good info on the region, OK maps, OK trail info, good energy.Vices: the author seems to think that mountain biking is done on dirt roads.Almost all of the rides are on roads, and there seems to be a concerted effort to not talk about popular single-track rides--most of the ST's listed are out-of-the-way oddities. If you want to ride classic single-track, this book is next to useless. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Entry-Level MTB Book
Coming in at 118 pages, and a smaller size book, this is what it is.No, it's not a mountain bike master level course, but you really need a video for that. This is a great basic rundown for a new mountain biker or teenager looking to get into the sport, but who doesn't want to read War and Peace about it.It has a basic rundown of many skills people use every day but don't realize they are using them.I would suggest this book, but not as a stand-alone, I would pick up this, Ned Overends book, and a D.I.Y. MTB repair book if you want to get a good feel for MTB basics and mid-level skills. You should also check out videos as well though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really Bad
It's really hard to find a good mountain biking book these days.Everyone is trying to learn the infamous bunny hop but even for books with illustrations, it is still hard to follow.Well, try a book with no photos - that's this book.Really bad and hard to follow. The writing is really boring.Skip.From what I read, I say skip the books - mountain biking really requires a live-action DVD to really teach you how to ride.

2-0 out of 5 stars A decent, but often confusing guidebook.
I think Fine Edge makes some great recreation topo maps for mt. biking, but I was frequently disappointed by this book. It's written by groups ofdifferent authors, and as a result, it's way uneven. Some regions featuregood, clear writing, others are almost shockingly bad.(Palm Springscyclists will hate it.)I'm kind of ashamed to admit it, but some of theroute descriptions and maps got me lost, too.Maybe it was my fault, but Idon't think so.For a company based in Bishop that makes such goodrecreation maps, the maps here seem especially lame.Bottom line: I'd buythis book for some of the regions, but not the others. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book for the beginers
This is a useful book for someone who's not familiar with the bike trails in the covered area (Orange County, CA).For each ride, it has a side-bar with at-a-glance key information (length, configuration, aerobic/technical difficulties, scenery, riding time, access, etc), and a brief description, followed by detailed directions, plus a map and an elevation chart. It is also up-to-date compared with the book by Randy Vogel and Larry Kuechlin. It even mentions the 2007 Santiago fire.I have never taken this book with me on a ride.I just use it to get some basic ideas about the trail and then go to Google Earth to print a map.It would be more useful if (1) the maps include more of the other trails around the featured trails to give the reader better orientation and (2) the maps include markers keyed to the distance in the elevation charts. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Biking in Arizona
This book is for much more technical areas for mountain biking than we wanted. We wanted gentle trails instead of hard-core trails which is what this book entails.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best for AZ mtb trails
Great book.Used it when I moved back to AZ to start exploring new stuff. It is a bit dated, but all guidebooks are to some degree. If you expect a guide book to walk you through every foot of trail and spoonfeed you what pretty trees to look at along the way you might as well spend your time surfing the internet for nice pictures of trails. What fun is exploring if it's all in the book?

I used this book as all guidebooks should be used...to get you to the best trailhead and save you from wasting valuable exploration time.To that end, it is a great resource and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to experience AZ mountain biking.

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated, inaccurate, not at all helpful
My goodness, book reviews can be deceiving. Especially when an author asks good friends to write positive reviews to help sell a book. One reviewer wrote; "he's (the author) ridden every one (trail) at least twice so the information is very accurate." This is far from the truth. The author wrote about accessing trails where the access was lost to developement years before he wrote the book. He couldn't have ridden the trail even once. The distances listed between turns on existing trails are off by so much you'll find yourself stopping and turning around after you don't see any turn where he says there will be one. Like bikeboy stated in his review, the book is too much filler, the maps are too small to be helpful, the book is too bulky to be carried in a pack, and not a helpful guidebook. No local shops even carry the book because they say it will get you lost. They sell much more accurate local trail guidebooks. My husband and I use guidebooks wherever we travel and this one is the least helpful we have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far exceeds expectations
Each time I return to this book I recognize how many little extras it includes, such as vertical profiles, several ways to find or select a trail, a good place to satisfy post-ride munchies, or the phone number of a local bike shop in a nearby town for an emergency repair.

As a 4th generation native of Arizona, I thought I knew my way around, but this book has paid off in directing me to a lot of out of the way trails I never would have found or even heard of swapping ideas with local riders.Do not overlook or underestimate the many "honorable mention" rides included in each chapter.

There's another popular book on Arizona mountain bike trails that is sort of a cartoon.Buy that if you want laughs, but buy Mountain Bike America: Arizona if you want a serious reference tool to get the most out of your visits to and around Arizona.

2-0 out of 5 stars whole lot of nothing
This thing weighs in at a whopping 19 ounces. Way too much paper filler with all sorts of peripheral information about mountain biking in general, but not enough specific details about the best Arizona trails. The maps were done with a GPS, but a gray line drawn by a computer over a b&w topo that covers only 1/4 page just does not get it. You've probably heard the expression that a camel is a horse designed by committee. This is a book written by a knowledgable mountain biker then stuffed into the Falcon/Globe-Pequot format. This fomulaic (sp?) approach to a mountain bike guide just doesn't work. The local guides and maps are cheaper, better and lighter. ... Read more

Though not exhaustive, Cycling Colorado's Mountain Passes by Kurt Magsamen, offers a perfect beginning for anyone seeking information on Colorado's many mountain climbs. This book, 237 pages long, describes 34 passes from all parts of the state. All passes are neatly outlined in the table of contents by area, thereby making them easy to find. The introduction describes the book's organization and general content. This section also includes useful information about safety, time of the year with optimal weather conditions, recommendations for conditioning as well as equipment. For someone new to the state or unfamiliar with cycling mountain passes, the introduction is most useful. There is also a summery of passes by region that includes elevation and difficulty on pages 223-4.A pass-bragging log provides a place for making personal notes. The included index provides quick access to the more detailed information contained in the book elsewhere.

The bulk of the book is devoted to a description of each pass. Each of the described passes is organized to begin with an overview, and followed by a road map, recommended start and stop points as well as alternatives, road and traffic conditions, descent challenges, sleep and supplies, and finally mileage logs. All information included is quite useful especially for someone who is new to the state.I especially like the comments contained in the road and traffic conditions, as well as the insights about where one can find accommodations and food. The graphic display of the mileage log offers a quick look of what one is about to tackle and given the exaggerated vertical scale can appear quite intimidating.More accurate information about mountain grades and overall difficulty is included in the opening paragraphs for each pass.

In general, I find the book is well organized and full of useful information. It is small enough to fit into the back of your bike jersey and at a list price of($$$) should be considered for the book shelf of every biking enthusiast who wants to take on Colorado's mountain passes. ... Read more
