5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique & Effective Guide
Those lucky enough to live where kitesurfing conditions are regularly good usually build a network of kiting buddies who will point out where they are making mistakes and advise them how to improve their skills. For others, like me, going kiting involves a 1500km expedition and as a relative foreigner (to Cape Town) it's a lot more difficult to build this network. Kitesurfers are generally very supportive of each other, but if you don't live there you don't get regular practice or the constant input. The occasional lesson helps but it's not the same.

This is where Kitesurfing in the Waves really fills a gap. As a relative newcomer to the sport (20 months) with limited ability to get on the water regularly, the visualisation methods of "seeing" and "feeling" taught in the book are great for offline training, mental preparation and rekindling enthusiasm.

Each manoeuvre is shown with the kitesurfer in a sequence of positions within a single picture, much like multiple exposures on a single frame whilst the manoeuvre is executed. This form of "movie in a picture" is easy to retain and re-visualise, quickly building confidence and the urge to get back on the water to try it for real.

For example, it far easier to visualise switching feet in a gybe turn rather than trying follow a step-by-step process of when to move which foot to where whilst the kite has a mind of its own. Too many things are happening at the same time - you've wiped out before you're half way if you try on this basis! This book shows you how to "feel it" right.

I've bought other books, watched training DVDs and read lots of web articles and can only say that this book is in an entirely different league. I recommend it highly for any intermediate kitesurfer who wants to venture into the waves - especially those 5 to 7m monsters that feature regularly off Bloubergstrand of Cape Town!

Product Description
Leap for your life and discover the trills of kitesurfing!

Written by three-time world champion and packed with over 500 photographs, this book covers first attempts at getting afloat to snapping a 360. It is the definitive guide to kitesurfing, covering both mental and physical preparation with fabulous photography showing every stage of each manoevure.

Like all watersports, safety and preparation come first. The opening chapters cover weather, location, preparation of equipment, physical and mental warm-ups and signals in the water.

The main body of the book introduces the reader to the basics of getting into the water and the principles of surfing on the wind: getting up, steering, turning, controlling the kite and what to do when you, inevitably, wipe out. Once the rider has mastered surfing at high speed, it’s time to start having some fun, with more than 50 tricks covered in full step-by-step detail from the basic chop hop to how to ride huge waves and advanced moves like the back to blind surface pass and the unhooked downloop s-bend!

The final sections of the book introduce fitness and flexibility ideas for kitesurfers and cover maintenance and repair of equipment. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How Good am I ???
When I bought this book there were two reviews...one favorable, one unfavorable....I trusted the favorable one - Big Mistake !

I am a begining kitesurfing, I thought this book would give me the fundamentals. It does not.It mentions a chicken loop without ever defining what a chicken loop is.
About 20% of the book is dedicated to safety and equipment...the rest is pictures of "Kristin" who is a competitive / award winning kitesurfer. There are many pictures of Kristin doing things that a beginner will never do. It takes at least a year to even think about these tricks.

"The Complete Guide" ? NO.
I hoped I would find the basics like: equipment...getting started...safety tips...terminology...definitions...easy to understand wind directions...a note about wind meters....practising figure 8 s...THERE WAS NONE OF THAT.

This book has some nice pictures and lets you know that Kristin is Very Good.
I am very happy for Kristin. But this does nothing to help ME.
save you money - really.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide to kitesurfing I've read
This has been a really helpful book - certainly the best guide to kitesurfing I've read. The photographs arent just there for decoration, they show each manoevre step by step. And the instruction is great. Detailed enough so the reader gets a clear idea of what they should be doing. The book also gives a lot of time to mental imaging - which I've found really useful. Recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to read
I'm desperate to learn to kitesurf. I bought this book because it was recently published and had lots of nice pictures. Big mistake. This book is translated from the German and it is an incomprehensible read. Painful really. This book is of no use to a beginner. Perhaps it might be useful for an intermediate wanting to see frame by frame images of various tricks. Doubt it's worth the cash in that case either. Save your money. ... Read more

Excerpt: Kitesurfing or kiteboarding is a surface water sport that uses the wind to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard). Generally kiteboarding refers to a style of riding known as freestyle or wake-style, whereas kitesurfing is more "wave-riding" oriented. These two styles usually require different boards and specific performance kites. A kitesurfer or kiteboarder uses a board with or without foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel the rider and the board across the water. In 2006, the number of kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 210,000, with 114,465 inflatable kites sold that same year. The sport is becoming safer due to innovations in kite design, safety release systems, and instructions. Riding styles have evolved to suit riders and conditions, such as wakestyle, waveriding, freestyle, freeride, jumping, and cruising. A kitesurfer off Long Beach, California In the 1800s George Pocock used kites of increased size to propel carts on land and ships on the water, using a four-line control system - the same system in common use today. Both carts and boats were able to turn and sail upwind. The kites could be flown for sustained periods. The intention was to establish kitepower as an alternative to horsepower, partly to avoid the hated "horse tax" that was levied at that time. In 1903, aviation pioneer Samuel Cody developed "man-lifting kites" and succeeded in crossing the English channel in a small collapsible canvas boat powered by a kite In the late 1970s the development of Kevlar then Spectra flying lines and more controllable kites with improved efficiency contributed to practical...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=191863 ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Kitesurfing," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Kitesurfing in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Kitesurfing when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Kitesurfing, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic, detailed, beautiful guide book
As an avid kiteboarder and windsurfer I was very excited to learn about the release of this book. Upon first receiving my copy of the book I was impressed by the size, quality and attention to detail. The guide is a fantastic piece of work. All regions of the world are covered with detailed information and many beautiful all color pictures for each venue. The first section of the book deals with Meteorology and Oceanography with topics on the world oceans, formation of wind, earth's winds, local wind phenomena, waves and tides. Then the regions are explored, one interesting spot after another. The "travel info" for each location is very helpful and detailed as well. Overall this is a must have "dream" travel guide book for any adventurous wind sport enthusiast. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars lengthy but lacking
Unfortunately this doesnt give enough basics and shows very little structure in its outline.Few diagramns that are really instructional.
Strong on safety and danger but little direction to the beginning kitesurfer.
It seemed more like the dialogue that a instructorwouldgive you through a series of lessons and in that context would most likely be excellent.
I have been kitesurfing for about 5 months and can ride a board in and out - so I'm still learning alot but found the thrust ofthe book not really helpful.
With the amount of experience the author has,he would have a huge lot more to offer and perhaps may do next time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kiteboarding's "A litte too" Simple Plan
I had a season of kiteboarding under my belt when I picked up this book. By the end of the season, I could maintain upwind ground pretty well, but actually getting upwind was still elusive. I had been reading Kiteboarding magazines feverishly and was excited to see someone had written a whole book on the subject. I was hoping for some good tips in such a concentrated source of kiteboarding knowledge.
I don't know how much money it takes to write a book that will be sold to such a small niche audience, but it seems that costs were contained by sending the book to press without it being edited. Their were-many annoying punctuation, errors not too mention sentences that were entirely to long with little continuity between paragraphs and peppered with a lot of slang probably in efforts of making the book cool. I didn't even know that this kind of thing bothers me until I picked up this book -probably because everything else I read HAS been edited fairly well.

I'm guessing that another cost cutting measure was the money saved not hiring a graphic designer to create diagrams that should have accompanied detailed descriptions of body position, wind direction and kite steering maneuvers. There were plenty of times that after I read a description of something I already knew how to do well I thought to myself "I can't see how a beginner will make ANY SENSE of this!" In the book's 278 pages I counted a whopping less than 10 diagrams.

Anyway with all that being said, if anything the book is comprehensive. It does cover quite a bit of material and the author's style is entertaining. And I did pick up some tid bits of knowledge after all. If you wanted to get into kiteboarding you may still like to have this book around. With any luck, you might even find a future "volume II" that flows well and includes many clarifying illustrations.
