5-0 out of 5 stars a title that corresponds to the content!
I can't say I own all the books on stand up fighting, but I have a few. since this is about kickboxing (the ring sport), I can say it's full of tips, drills, and insights. it's like having an experienced coach, I guess.
most other books I have on the subject merley describe the tools, but there's usually very few elements on strategy, mindset etc.

well this book is full of it! ( I mean strategy and mindset stuff, and they're excellent.)

either you train in a similar sport or you want to be an enlightened spectator, this book is the most interesting I found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on stand-up fighting I've ever read.
This is the most comprehensive stand-up fighting book I've read. The authors are not only incredibly knowledgeable but they are articulate--breaking down the moves to their most basic and understandable forms. My background is ground-fighting, so that ability to break things down in a way that even a thick headed guy like me can understand it is incredibly valuable to those of us who are looking to expand our fight game.Even if you have an extensive stand-up background, I think that you would find this book valuable because of all the information it gives on competing and on the world of pro-fighting.This is just one guy's opinion, but if you are looking to compete either in MMA, kick-boxing or some other kind of stand-up fighting I'd say you definitely need to read this book and keep it as a ready reference in your tool box.

5-0 out of 5 stars the ultimate guide for anyone interested in kickboxing

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny
As said before me this book lives up to its title. It is very complete, the author talks extensivly not only on every aspect of kickboxing I've ever heard of, but also of many I haven't. The book is easy to understand and the author has a unique style of writing and organization that keeps you interested. This is one of the best martial art books I've ever owned. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic guide to kickboxing.
Though I dislike the series titles(Complete Idiot's guide)of these books, they do have a formula which makes the guides very detailed and informative. This is one of the best books on kickboxing. The material is organized to make the learning of the material simple and efficient. The twenty chapters are divided into six parts, which covers every aspect of kickboxing. In conclusion, if you are seeking an excellent guide to kickboxing, you will want to get a copy of this book.Rating: 4 Stars.Joseph J. Truncale (Samurai Aerobics, Monadnock Defensive Tactics (MDTS) System, Use of the Monadnock Straight baton, Police Yawara Stick Techniques, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Martial Art Myths).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book. Especially for women.
This is the first martial arts book I have read that is written with women in mind. Don't get me wrong, it's not all about women kickboxers. It's just the first time I've read any martial arts book with specific paragraphs for and about women in martial arts. This is a good book for beginners or someone just trying to decide if they want to try kickboxing. It includes techniques, conditioning and theory. This book needs more pictures explaining the moves, positions and combinations. This book seems like it would be inspirational for women.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Kickboxing
Brillant book on Kickboxing for both beginner & advanced student. Lots of interesting compination. Excellent to compliment your training in Kickboxing Karate or Tae Kwon Do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Reference, Not the best for Beginners.
I really thought this book was a 3, but after some thought I gave it a 3.5.The main reason I gave it the higher score is because, as many other reviewers point out, it is a very complete reference. It's loaded with information. The author is clearly very experienced.

Unfortunately, as a beginner, this book came up short in several key areas.First of all, the pictures and diagrams were simply not clear enough. While not true of all books in this series, I find this issue does crop up from time to time. The pictures are dark and dated, and it's very difficult to clearly see the poses. The publisher should have sprung for new pictures for this book.

The book's other shortcoming is in the area of organization. The information is dropped on you as if you were reading a dictionary. It's very difficult to learn something new by going through so much information. The book could have been better layed out, starting with some basic exercises and then delving into the more complex.

In my opinion, these changes would make this a tremendously better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to self defense
This book is outstanding.I have 13 years experience in different martial arts (tae kwon do, kickboxing, Brazilian Jujitsu) and think that this is a very complete resource.I was impressed by the explanations and photos of techniques related to kickboxing and training, but what makes this so wonderful are these added features.

1.actual self defense techniques using palm hand strikes instead of a closed fist

2.advice on ground fighting (using striking techniques)

3. advice for young children on self defense

In addition, the training routines presented and pad drills are first rate. They even work with Thai boxing's elbow and knee strikes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for Muay Thai Kickboxing Training
I am the owner of Angel's Gym. Angel's Gym is a Martial Art school promoted by the International Kickboxing Federation. We have trained 3 IKF NC State Muay Thai rules (Amateur) Champions for 2008 and 2009.This book was and is a source of reference for conditioning and training form and sparring at our training facility. Neither my trainers nor myself have found a more worthy literary source for contemporary, competition curriculum development in the area of Competitive Kickboxing Training.

The Author uses pictures, text and bullet facts to drive his training points home. The techniques are demonstrated and presented in correct and incorrect form to help the reader track his/her own progress. If the reader is a Full-Contact or Muay Thai Kickboxer in training this book is an excellent source of information. If the reader is a trainer of such competitors it would be an indispensable resource. For the trainer the book should be used in conjunction to reading MMA Striker books that discuss a stylistic interpretation of the classic techniques depicted in this resource: Anderson Silva and BJ Penn's books for example. When doing so this book is good for the conditioning and form aspects of training.Use the Style Books for sparring applications that involve transitions from Boxing, Kickboxing, and Takedowns.

3-0 out of 5 stars it was alright
While this book does have some good information, and lots of photos to demonstrate techniques, the author doesn't even actually seem to demonstrate that he realizes any difference between muay thai and kick boxing. All in all, i would rather not have bought this book, but am not terribly upset that i did. So, not a terrible buy, but don't expect too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Muay Thai training book on the Market
If you want to be the best striker in your dojo this is the book to buy. Also buy all the Benny Urquidez Martial Arts training books together your knowledge of striking will be awsome. Also join a good Muay Thai School then compete against Tae Kwon Do Stylists. Then see how easy it is to defeat Tae Kwon Do Black Belts. Buy the book its brillant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Americanized Muay Thai; well-rounded conditioning
The emphasis of this book seems to be conditioning more than technique. However, that doesn't mean it isn't good. There are five full chapters on physical fitness, and it's probably the most complete program I've seen in a martial arts book. The conditioning covered is everything from calesthetics to weight training to stretching to cardio. For those who are wondering what fitness has to do with fighting, well, it's a lot easier to defeat a person of equal skill and greater size if you have superior conditioning.Anyway, I found these chapters easy to follow, and very insightful. As far as the techniques go, they are described fairly well, and following a single offensive move are the defenses against it.Punches are given the most detail, with sidebars providing extra tips for each punch.Just for the record, pgs. 15-70 are devoted to these techniques. There's also a chapter on training drills, which covers equipment and different drills to do based on what skill you want to emphasise. On the down side, the "self-defense" section was kind of baren, the history chapter seemed a little rushed, and many combinations seemed to favor no-holds-barred contests instead of Muay Thai, in that there were throws and chokes.Overall, a very good book, I just don't think it truly presented Muay Thai.MMA/NHB atheletes might find it useful, as well as folks who are trying to spruce up their self-defense/full contact training. Also, anyone who wants to use a Kickboxing-based workout program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for advanced beginners and intermediates
Chad Boykin writes a solid book on kickboxing technique and tactics. The book has plenty of illustrative and high contrasting photos to demonstrate his concepts. The book layout is logical and covers a wide variety of bases (those already familiar with weight training and aerobic training may want to skip it). The real value of the book, I believe, is in his use of combinations and pad drills. These parts provide a great reference and empower the intermediate fighter in making his/her own favorite personal combinations.Too few books provide such detail and examples for this important material...As in any case this provides a good supplement and/or refresher of muay thai, though people truly wanting to learn this great style of fighting should start with a qualified instructor.More advanced fighters will not get too much out of this manual; there is very little material on the culture of Muay Thai and how it is practiced in Thailand, very little coverage of principles and mechanics of the style (which should also be addressed for true beginners) and very little on fighting strategy.Boykin provides a solid book for those interested in tactics which ideally suits advanced beginners and intermediate practitioners of the martial sport. ... Product Description
Each year, thousands of people begin kickboxing, and - not so surprisingly - the vast majority of these people are women. It's a great time for this sport, reflected in the number of women of all ages who show up for training classes at gyms throughout the country. With virtually every popular woman's character in movies in television shows exhibiting some sort of kickboxing or martial arts prowess, the trend will probably continue for some time.In addition, thousands more women join related classes, such as aerobox, cardio-kickboxing, Tae Bo and the like.

Once these women start learning some of the techniques of kickboxing, they often want to learn more. Whether they attempt to learn on their own or through classes offered by experienced instructors, most kickboxers eventually feel the need to have a skills book to help them with their practice. Most women, however, must purchase books intended for men, since little traditional kickboxing information is directed toward a female audience. While women can, of course, benefit from material written for men, they find it more useful to have information written with them in mind. Some of the challenges that women face are not faced by men, and many of the inherent skills that many women have (speed, agility, flexibility) are often overlooked in traditional reference books.

Kickboxing for Women covers all the essentials of learning kickboxing, plus tips especially for women. It contains information helpful to beginning, intermediate and advanced kickboxers. The book also includes principles, techniques and drills for fitness kickboxer as well as the professional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented primer to help beginners
Kickboxing For Women by Jennifer Lawler (2nd Degree Black Belt, Tae Kwon Do) and Debz Buller (Certified Cardio-Karate, ACE Aerobics Instructor and ISSA Certified Personal Trainer) is a high-spirited, practical guide to stretching, exercise, fitness, and self-defense, written in direct, plain text and illustrated with plenty of demonstrative black-and-white photographs. While not a substitute for kickboxing classes taught by a professional, Kickboxing For Women is a superbly presented primer to help beginners with an interest better understand the basics of training and sparring. With workout plans written to take a woman's body and endurance into account, Kickboxing For Women is a winning supplement to any female kickboxer's physical fitness regimen!

5-0 out of 5 stars From a woman's perspective
As a female full-contact kickboxing instructor, I found this book to be a valuable buy for any woman who is thinking about getting started in kickboxing.I liked how the authors identify the different styles of kickboxing, and how they explain the difference between aerobic kickboxing and full-contact kickboxing. This information is useful in helping a prospective student identify what her goals are before signing up for classes.I found most of the advice on the execution of techniques sound. As a full-contact kickboxing instructor, I differ on some points. However, these are minor differences, which are mostly style related, and which is something a new student looking to get started in kickboxing should not get hung up on.The book's strength, however, lies in the chapters following the explanations of the techniques. For example, I found the chapter on full-contact sparring with its many tips on goal setting and mental preparation, and the "For Women Only" and "Debz Says" suggestions at the end of each chapter, very helpful to a new student. And the exercise section does a good job describing why and how, rather than what.In other words, it's not just an endless list of exercises, which is so often found in other books of this nature. The section on "Other Practical Matters" was very informative for women, and something that most other books on the combat arts neglect to mention.I would recommend this book to any woman who is thinking about getting started in this male-dominated sport. ... Product Description
Forget the stereotypes. Today's Japanese women are shattering them -- breaking the bonds of tradition and dramatically transforming their culture. Shopping-crazed schoolgirls in Hello Kitty costumes and the Harajuku girls Gwen Stefani helped make so popular have grabbed the media's attention. But as critically acclaimed author Veronica Chambers has discovered through years of returning to Japan and interviewing Japanese women, the more interesting story is that of the legions of everyday women -- from the office suites to radio and TV studios to the worlds of art and fashion and on to the halls of government -- who have kicked off a revolution in their country.

Japanese men hardly know what has hit them. In a single generation, women in Japan have rewritten the rules in both the bedroom and the boardroom. Not a day goes by in Japan that a powerful woman doesn't make the front page of the newspapers. In the face of still-fierce sexism, a new breed of women is breaking through the "rice paper ceiling" of Japan's salary-man dominated corporate culture. The women are traveling the world -- while the men stay at home -- and returning with a cosmopolitan sophistication that is injecting an edgy, stylish internationalism into Japanese life. So many women are happily delaying marriage into their thirties -- labeled "losing dogs" and yet loving their liberated lives -- that the country's birth rate is in crisis.

With her keen eye for all facets of Japanese life, Veronica Chambers travels through the exciting world of Japan's new modern women to introduce these "kickboxing geishas" and the stories of their lives: the wildly popular young hip-hop DJ; the TV chef who is also a government minister; the entrepreneur who founded a market research firm specializing in charting the tastes of the teenage girls driving the country's GNC -- "gross national cool"; and the Osaka assembly-woman who came out publicly as a lesbian -- the first openly gay politician in the country.

Taking readers deep into these women's lives and giving the lie to the condescending stereotypes, Chambers reveals the vibrant, dynamic, and fascinating true story of the Japanese women we've never met. Kickboxing Geishas is an entrancing journey into the exciting, bold, stylish new Japan these women are making. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustratingly poorly researched
I found this book a bit infuriating actually. It reads like a memoir of the author's time in Japan and the people she met, but the subject matter is too important for the excessively casual treatment she gives it. Chambers made no effort to engage the ample existing research on the subject of women in Japan, which raises the question for me about why I should take her opinion seriously when she couldn't be bothered to do her homework. Sure, this is an easy read- it's fluffy and anecdotal, but Chambers was able to secure some interesting interviews and the lack of faith she engineers in her own ability to speak Japanese makes me wonder how accurate the information she gleaned was, or how accurate her recap is. How often did she rely on translators, I wanted to know? After an initial discussion of translation work, she is less than transparent about her process.

Essentially, the author does not engender faith in her data by the thoroughness of her research or the tone of this book. If you're interested in stories about her being dressed up as a geisha, or going out drinking with the bellhop of her hotel, the book is fine. As a pseudo-scholarly tome it's not worth much consideration. There's too much high quality and engaging work on Japan in English to waste time on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, fun book...but...
After perusing for recent books on gender roles in Japan for a paper, I finally landed this book. The title was catchy and was a quick read.
However, reading it made me want to immediately contact whoever edited the thing. Not only is some of the information blatantly incorrect for the time (hello, Aiko will not become empress and no law was put into effect making it possible for a woman to ascend to the throne), there were obvious grammar and spelling mistakes. One of the most annoying thing was the inconsistent spelling of the famous street in Tokyo, Omotesando. Shown as Ometesando and Ometosando numerous times, neither was correct. Chapters were obviously not well thought out and contiunity problems arose often. Women that were interviewed earlier in the book were referenced to like complete strangers to the reader. Many things were explained twice which gave me a sense of deja vu while reading quite a few times. I'm no editing whiz or grammar nazi by any means but it seems like this book was not edited at all.
All (terrible) editing issues aside, the book brings up quite a few modern issues. I had done quite alot of reading on the matter and Chambers seems to have some of the most approachable writing for the subject. The bond she shares with each woman interviewed becomes apparent and helpful to the overall flow of the book. Her commentary is colorful, fun and is relatively objective (despite what the other reviews I've read state). The research that has gone into making the book comes out quite easily without being overstated. However, the research seemed shallow. It seemed like she gathered information solely from the internet and then went straight to these women. The preparation involved seemed minimal other than developing well thought out questions for interviewees.
One thing that Chambers excels at is developing overarching themes. The idea of the office lady serving tea is constantly re-introduced in a plesant way. However, the continuity issues with the chapters reiterates the ENTIRE CONCEPT at least twice and becomes redundant.

4-0 out of 5 stars At , last, a look beyond stereotypes
Very good book. Reccommended for anyone interested in Japan, or travelling in Japan -- esp for people who might be travelling or living there an extended time. We lived in Tokyo for nearly three years during the late nineties, and the complexities and surprisingly strong push for change that you notice if you talk a lot to women are very accurately described in this book. This book really belies the largely Western stereotype of submissive, traditional women. The book is also quite sympathetic and insightful in describing some of the difficulties of Japanese men in a changing society. Anyone interested in getting a feel for possible future directions of Japanese society should read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book on muay thai!
this book was very very informative on its origin and moves regarding muay thai kickboxing.

i would recommend it, good addition to a library too

2-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this! Save your money.
I don't care who your coaches are.I don't want to see pictures of you and random fighters.I don't want to read about your experiences. I don't want to read about why some fighters want to visit Thailand or where Thailand is on a map.I want to learn Muay Thai techniques. There was nothing advanced about the book. There was very little meat. You can learn more by "googling" muay thai techniques. This book was really bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finaly a real book
The book "Muay Thai: Advanced Thai Kickboxing Techniques" by Christoph Delp shows that the author has gained experience in fighting and training in Thailand. The techniques range from basic up to some I haven't even heard of, despite the years I have worked out in Thailand. This book is very good to use additional to the daily work out in the gym. Of course a book can't teach you how to become a good fighter, but even some "professionals" should take the chance to re-read some of the excellent descriptions regarding the shown techniques! Additional to the good text work, the photos are making it easy to follow the different movements. Reading the book and the included interviews plus viewing the photos of the thai-stars and high officials, gives you an impression on how the special atmosphere in Thailand is like. All in all for me this is the only book that was written out of the view and the experiences of someone (a farang) who lived and practiced in Thailand not somewhere else! Excellent work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Muay Thai
I bought this book in Thailand. Everyone in our camp liked the book, because it is real Muay Thai. Great pictures and professional fighters.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not advanced!
I was really disappointed in this book. I don't know who could benefit from it. It's too elementary for semi-advanced students but doesn't cover basics so it stinks for the beginner!
The descriptions are a little vague and the photos do not explain much. There are a few great action shots but nothing you can learn from. There were too many "portrait" photos of Thai competitors.
Overall I did learn a few things but it was not worth the read ...or the money. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
Although I purchased this book in Books-a-Million, I wish I had bought it from here as I would have saved $12-13. When I looked at it in the store, I ignored the foolish title (muay thai and kick-boxing are two completely different sports) and merely gave it a quick overview instead of sitting down and actually reading parts of it. Upon futher inspection of the book, I immediately knew it was a mistake when reading the "About The Author" page in the back. Exactly how does one hold a black belt in a combat sport?

As I flipped through the pages, I noticed that the step-by-step instructions were ALMOST perfectly written out, but severely lacking in the photo aspect of the book. All I saw were pictures of the result, be it on an opponent or just in the air. Overall this book was really not worth it's money, and I HIGHLY recommend "Muay Thai Unleashed" and "Muay Thai: The Most Distinguished Art of Fighting" for anyone serious about learning/training/competing

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome customer service-great book!
This book is awesome. Absolutely great pictures. What's better than that? Getting it for a lot less than in the big book stores. The book was in great condition and I received it very quickly in the mail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Muay Thai Kickboxing
While not a student of MMA, but an avid follower, I've recognized these techniques as used by such greats as Anderson Silva and others. I've been a student of muay thai for over a year, and I feel this is one of the very best on the market that adheres to strict muay thai technique. One of the few I've read that doesn't bastardize or compromise the explicit technique involved in the tradition of true muay thai. All Photos are explicit, large, and in color, well demonstrated, and the format is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Could Have Been So Much Better
After reading this book I was really torn on how I was going to rate it. I seriously considered giving it a 3 star rating, but then again I didn't want my rating to seem overly harsh since this book isn't really bad, just incomplete. Therefore, I decided to go with a 3 star rating and a 4 star rating with an explanation on both. First, the 4 star rating...

This book shows pretty much the entire arsenal of offensive and defensive techniques in Muay Thai in very clear full color photographs.

The layout is easy to follow and didn't present any problems for me as I was reading this book.

If you, as the reader, look at this book as a basic reference manual for the beginning student, then it really has served its purpose and lived up to its name.

And now the 3 star rating...

However, if you are buying this book with the intent to learn all the ins-and-outs of a particular technique, then you are going to be very disappointed. On almost all of the techniques shown, the only photograph you see is one showing you the end result of that particular technique. For example; when the author shows you a left roundhouse kick and a right roundhouse kick, the only photographs you have are one for each technique where the individual modeling the technique is standing there with their leg fully extended. This type of photographic layout is predominantly throughout the entire book.

The amount of text describing each technique is minimal and is really detrimental to anyone trying to learn how to correctly execute a particular technique. There seemed to be plenty of space available and had the author/publisher used the space available more wisely and perhaps used smaller photographs and a few more pages, might have really made one heck of a good book. Sadly, this is not the case.

Not that this is a horrible book by any means, it simply fell short in several areas when it came to providing a detailed description of the techniques being shown.

If you are looking for a basic reference book to show you the various techniques and a brief description of each, then this is definitely the book for you. However, if you are looking for a book to teach you in great detail the correct way to execute a particular technique, then you need to look elsewhere.

Here are a couple of books that are worth taking a look at.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the Fundamentals ofKickboxing
This book is creatively crafted by Peter Cunningham and Robert Mickey. It is a great primer on the basics of kickboxing and chapters includeinformation on conditioning, getting started, striking techniques and muchmore. The book isn't just full of photos teaching the reader how to makeeach movement. No, this book is much more. There contains muchinformation on the ends and outs of this sport.

This book reads at aninth grade level which widens the appeal to teenagers who have had somekarate training and may be looking to expand their knowledge into the sportaspects of kickboxing.Adults in the martial arts (like myself) shouldenjoy this book as well.Cunningham has done a great job and deserves alot of credit for this publication.

This book is a must for those people who are interested in doing kickboxing, whether they are newcomers to the sport or intermediate fighters looking for great knockout techniques. The book is written in aneasy to understand format with photos showing how to execute the kicks andpunches. Before I read this book I knew nothing about fighting. But withintwo weeks of practicing these techniques I felt confident that I coulddefend myself if the need arose.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the art of Kickboxing!
What a wonderful book. The most appealing thing about it was the author's style of communication. Not only does describe techniques clearly and thoroughly, but I also felt he was right there providing the instructions. His tone was informative and friendly -- he knows his stuff. 2-0 out of 5 stars Really a waste of time
Honestly this book is a waste of time and money for those who are looking to strengthen their technique or train for competition. While I wouldnt say that anything displayed in the book is wrong, its just not very helpful unless you have no kickboxing experence at all.But the thing is that if you dont have any experence and you are not in a class or being instructed by someone with real experence at best you are only wasteing your time and at worst, going to hurt yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strictly a Fitness Book
Don't try to defend yourself using this book. You will get creamed. This book is strictly for fitness kickboxing which is okay.Don't use this book to create your own style unless it is a fitness kickboxing style. I don't think that many of these exercises translate well to a competition class. These exercises are best left in the aerobics room for the most part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Source of Information
I am a kickboxing instructor, teaching a class on heavy bags and working on developing a style of my own.I have found O'Donnell's book to be an invaluable source of information to me.His clear, concise descriptions of stances and punching and kicking techniques cover all the basics.I'm always looking for creative kickboxing combinations, and he has a number of them in the book.In addition, his section in the back on Resistance Training Exercises has helped me tremendously in creating new ways to challenge the people I'm instructing. Product Description

Side Kick is the tenth volume in the extremely well written and fully illustrated, Achieving Kicking Excellence series of martial arts related books.

Side Kick, along with the other nine volumes in the Achieving Kicking Excellence series, goes into intricate detail over all aspects of executing the primary kick, which in this case is the Back Leg Side Kick, and several of its main variations.

Starting with a basic anatomical analysis of this kick, you quickly progress to the basic principles associated with the Side Kick, and then you dive right into learning the proper execution of the primary kick, Back Leg Side Kick.

Once you have finished with this section, you are taken to the variations chapter which builds upon the primary kick, Back Leg Side Kick, by teaching you 10 of its main variations. From here you are taken to the Training and Practice Methods chapter for a look at some very simple, yet effective methods for adding speed and power to your kicks.

Your next chapter takes a question and answer approach to some of the most common problems people have executing the Side Kick and the solutions to correct them.

The next chapter in this book deals with a very brief and basic application section for the Side Kick and each of the variations previously detailed in this book.

NOTE:

The combat/self-defense applications of the Side Kick are discussed and demonstrated in much greater detail in the companion book to this book, Side Kick: Achieving Kicking Excellence; Volume 10, which is Side Kick: Applications in Combat: Achieving Kicking Excellence; Volume 20. This book goes into intricate detail over all aspects of applying the primary kick, which in this case is the Side Kick, and several of its main variations, against twelve of the most common attacks that you are most likely to face in an actual unarmed self-defense/combat situation.

At the conclusion of this book you are given a sneak preview of the next ten volumes in the Achieving Kicking Excellence series, which are the Applications in Combat volumes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Side Kick - What you need to know
In Achieving Kicking Excellence - Side Kick, Mr. Kovacich has again provided a great service to martial arts practitioners.Side Kick provides a very detailed description complete with photos on the proper way to perform a side kick and variations.I have found that this book has helped with my kicking and also in the way I teach the kicks to my students.I would highly recommend this book to all beginning and intermediate level martial artists and maybe advances practitioners may pick something up as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars How's your side kick?
Here we go again.I have read all but two of Shawn's books on kicking and it is amazing how he has managed to get so much information on kicks into each book. What is of interest to me is the fact that you will learn variations of the side kick. You won't have just learn a side kick but a hop/sliding side kicka jumping side kick plus more.
Shawn has taken the time to give you real skills and a way to build on those skills. He shows you, withpictures, which part of the body you will be using for the side kick. There are target references (a kick is no good if it doesn't hit a viable target). You will get tips on how to build up your speed, power and execution.
The only thing left for you to do is practice but practice correctly.Shawn says in the book it is better to practice 100 times correctly than 1,000 times incorrectlly.I agree!
These are not just words on a piece of paper but personal experience that has taught Shawn this is the way to properly execute a side kick. What you won't learn in this series is timing and distance. That is reserved for another series of books on Application of Kicks.
There is not a lot more I can say about Shawn's books that I haven't said already.Get it, put it in your library and refer to them often.

5-0 out of 5 stars everything you needed to know about kicking
I have been practicing the martial arts since the age of 14. This year will mark the 40th year that I've studied one system of combat or another. Additionally, I have been a police officer for 31 years and my profession has occasionally offered me the opportunity to use the thingS that I've learned in the Dojo. I have an entire set of Shawn Kovacich's superb series on AchievingKicking Excellence (Vol. 1- 10) and can truthfully say that I have seen no more thorough books on the art of kicking in the all my years in the martial arts. The kicks covered (one per volume) include the back kick, the heel kick, the axe kick, the crescent kick, the reverse crescent kick, the front kick, the hook kick, the hatchet kick, the round house kick, and the side kick.
Each volume begins with an overview of the kick and instructions on how to make the best possible use of the kick. Chapter 1 delves into the anatomy of the kick and which muscles are used, and in what manner, to achieve the maximum possible efficiency in kicking.
Chapter 2 outlines a stretching program and offers helpful tips in that area for the student. Chapter 3 deals withthe basic principles of kicking movement. These include the striking implement, target areas, stability (a biggie!),balance, alignment, sequence of movement, accuracy. Strength, speed, timing and distance, impact, retraction, and visualization. Each area is explained in detail as it relates to developing your kicking ability.
Chapter 4 deals exhaustively with the primary kick. It follows the kick from initiation through each phase of the kick to impact, recoil, and recovery. He troubleshoots the problems that many martial artists experience with the kick at each phase and offers corrective actions for each problem.
Chapter 5 goes over pretty much every variation of the kick known to man and these are dissected with master Kovacich's usual thoroughness.
Chapter 6 is one of the strongest parts ofthe book for me. In this chapter, Master Kovacich discusses training and practice methods. He details skill, strength, speed, and power training. Learning how to do the kick is only half the battle.Developing the kick through specific training methods and exercises is the other half and is usually overlooked by other authors.
As if he hadn't already done enough in this area, Master Kovacich outlines further specific trouble areas for the student in chapter 7. Chapter 8 covers kicking applications for tournament and street.. Master Kovacich shows how the kick is set up and how delivery can be affected by your opponent's actions as well as your own.
In chapter 9 you can see why Master Kovacich's kicks are so good and why you should pay attention to his advice. He is in the Guiness Bookof World records for throwing more high kicks in an afternoon that I believe I have thrown in my life.
If you desire to become a more powerful, competent kicker, then these books represent an important investment for you . I can tell you that, even after 40 years of fighting experience, there are things in these books that have made me re-think some of my training methods regarding kicking.
Master Kovacich will be coming out with a new series of books dealing with the combat applications of each kick in the near future. As I'm sure these books will cover combat applications with the same thoroughness of this series, I eagerlyawait their publishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book
Shawn Kovacich has been training in the fighting arts for many years, competing in some of the toughest bare knuckle tournaments around, setting world records for the Guinness Book of Records (11,000 high kicks in 5 hours) and working as a bouncer in places angels fear the tread.

Shawn is an excellent all-around martial artist with kicks that could flatten the face on a statue. He shares his knowledge of his kicking ability in a large book series he calls "Achieving Kicking Excellence" that is like nothing else on the market.

In the Sidekick volume, the author offers something for everyone. If you're a visual reader, there are tons of how-to-do photos that show the many forms of the sidekick from every angle. For the more technically minded, the author breaks down every facet of the kick so that you know exactly how and why it's executed mechanically, to include which muscles are involved and how precisely to align the skeletal system.

The book also includes exercises - weights and free-hand - that target the specific muscles needed to develop your power, speed and accuracy in the sidekick.

There is a small applications section that he uses to clarify certain points about delivering the sidekick. One section I really liked was the troubleshooting guide. It's a little like getting personal coaching since you'll probably find a question answered there that you have been wondering about.

The word "complete" is overused in reviews but not in this case. Achieving Kicking Excellence Sidekick is a complete book on developing your optimum sidekick kick. Every martial artist - veteran and newbie - will benefit from the insightful instruction in this book, written by a guy who has truly mastered kicking and applied his knowledge in the ring and in the street.

I've been training, teaching and writing about the martial arts since 1965 and I highly recommend this book.

Loren W. Christensen, author of over 40 books, martial artist, 8th dan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Master Athlete and Teacher Shares His Art
Shawn Kovacich is a committed, highly regarded and honored practitioner of martial arts with a specialization in Kicking. Yet not satisfied to have achieved the degree of excellence in his craft, Kovacich has devised a series of books that extend beyond the usual 'self-help' category of writing. His considerably cautious eye and sense of balance, in sport and in life, has resulted in his publishing a series of books - ACHIEVING KICKING EXCELLENCE - that at this point are ten in number but promise in the near future to be doubled in amount. Each of these books, handsomely designed and with excellent photographic illustrations, takes one type of kick at a time and explore not only the development of that kick, but also inform the student reader the kinesiology of that kick as well as slowly advising how to develop and master that kick.

Most books on martial arts fall into one of two categories: some are written in a format that is beyond the understanding of the reader who may be completely new to martial arts while others dumb down the reader with superficial 'quick fix' problems thinking the reader is already proficient in the fundamentals of Martial Arts.Kovacich respects his reader/pupil, and with great dignity of writing style and unfolds each kick mastery with surety of developmental skill and encouragement of each aspect of a single movement. This allows the reader who may be proficient in Kicking to buy just the one book written for the type of Kick the reader finds difficult to master: buying the entire set of books assures the reader that each stage of development will be respected from the beginning to the mastery of the ten Kicks Kovacich addresses.

Each of these ten volumes is equally excellent. The ten volumes include Back Kick, Roundhouse Kick, Front Kick, Side Kick, Crescent Kick, Reverse Crescent Kick, Hook Kick, Wheel Kick, Axe Kick and Hatchet Kick.Having exposure to each of these ten volumes gathers respect for Shawn Kovacich not only as a man who is able to master a tough medium of sport, but also one who has discovered the perfect manner of teaching and communication. The ten volume set is well worth the investment, monetarily and educationally.Grady Harp, May 09 ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good basic guide Jeet Kune Do kickboxing training techniques.
The late Bruce Lee studied numerous martial arts in the development of his Jeet Kune Do approach to combat.Kickboxing was one of the combat arts he studied. The authors both studied under the legendary Dan Inosanto, who was Bruce Lee's top student. The authors emphasize that "this is not a book on techniques" but rather just one way of looking at a particular combat method. The areas covered in this text include:A brief history of the Jeet Kune do kickboxing approach, basic hand tools use with equipment, the JKD stance, foot weapons, how to attack with combinations, progressive indirect attack, defensive tools and other training drills are demonstrated. One of the areas I disagree with in Jeet Kune Do is their use of the strong side leg and stong side hand forward in their kickboxing and fighting method. In conclusion, this is a good basic introduction to Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing, which will be of interest to most martial artists.Rating:4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Monadnock Defensive Tactics (MDTS) System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Police Baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Police Yawara Stick Techniques, Persuader Baton System, The Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Manual, Mini-Baton official course Manual, Samurai Aerobics, Season of the Warrior).

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent start-up for stand-up fighting
This book wasn't designed for the sport of kickboxing; rather, it was designed to show the kicking and boxing aspects of Jeet Kune Do. This book shows basic punches and kicks with the forward and rear hand and foot, and their applications. There is also some discussion and applications shown of using footwork, along with these tools, to move in and out of range, or to bring different weapons to bear against an opponent. As well, some combinations, using both hands only, feet only, and hands and feet together are shown, as are the basic attacks, against equipment like focus mitts and kicking shields. Also discussed, briefly, is the progressive indirect attack. Defensive possibilities are then shown, including counterattacks, including slips, bridging, ducking, stop-hits, and more. The use of focus mitts in training for defense is covered in the same chapter. There's also a bit on attack by drawing, whereby one "baits" the opponent. The book then moves on to jab-catch drills, building off of the basic defensive movement into counter-offense.The book finishes with some parrying drills, some basic kicking drills, and a word or two about strategy vs. different opponents. The elements in this book focus on Jun Fan JKD, and in that sense it's very compatible with the "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method" series and "Jun Fan/ Jeet Kune Do: The Textbook".In fact, "Kickboxing" and "Textbook" are almost two halves of a whole: the former for the basic applications, the latter for more advanced tactics and strategies. Those interested in Jun Fan would not be disappointed with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough
This book offers a glimpse at Jeet Kune Do principles as they are applied to the sport of Kickboxing. The focus mitt drills as well as the other drills are explained correctlly but the poor photography really doesn't reveal the tecniques in the best form. Also this book was written in the 80's as a current Asst. Instructor in JKD I can tell you that the techniques and strategies in JKD have changed quite a bit since this book was written. For a better read pick up Principles of a Complete Fighter by Ron Balicki. It gives you a good view of current JKD training and strategy

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic overview of Jun Fan Gung Fu's basic striking
Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing is a good overview of the basics of Jun Fan Gung Fu in the kicking and punching range. If you're already a Jun Fan / JKD student under a qualified instructor you probably won't get anything really new out of this, but it is a good reference for those of us who aren't good about taking notes. My only complaint is that the basic stance and footwork are only given about a page and a half, and IMO, those are two of the absolute most important things as they are the foundation for everything else. If you don't have a good stance and good footwork, everything else falls apart.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
I have been kickboxing for fifteen years, and got this book in the hopes that it would offer some fresh perspectives on the subject.I was sorely disappointed.

The book has a kernel of good information, however, the stances, footwork, combinations and technique demonstrated are so clearly incorrect, I was surprized this book got published. Not only are the authors demonstrating poor technique, the layout and structure of the book doesn't facilitate clear instruction on the principles of fighting.

I realize that this book's bent is JKD kickboxing, however, I wouldn't use this book for anything other than a primer on how NOT to do martial arts.

Perhaps I got spoiled. When I first started fighting back in the 80's, I was lucky enough to get a copy of Jean-Yves Theiriault's "Full Contact Karate".This book has become a collectors item. When I see books like the one I just reviewed, I understand why people are willing to shell out [price] for a used copy of Theiriault's book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars everything you ever need to know about kicking

5-0 out of 5 stars Front Kick
Over the past 7 -8 months, I have been searching extensively for descriptions of the various kicks and how to properly execute them. I have read numerous explanations of kicking techniques, gauging each according to length, clarity, detail, and thoroughness. Although I was able to learn something from most, none of the descriptions were of the caliber that I had been seeking. Having yet to be satisfied, I continued to search for a description that would meet my criteria - and stumbled upon the Achieving Kicking Excellence series by Shawn Kovacich. I was interested immediately. What initially fascinated me was that the author had created an entire series about kicking, with each book devoted to all the particulars of a single technique. After reading the book, I can say that the series has been all that I was looking for and more. The Achieving Kicking Excellence series is unparalleled in length, clarity, detail, and thoroughness. I believe these books to be the single most exhaustive explanations of each kick that have ever been written.

Achieving Kicking Excellence: Front Kick first covers the basic anatomy of both the bones and the muscles in relation to the front kick. I had never previously considered its significance, but I now realize the importance of understanding anatomical structure. Knowing which muscles are involved in the front kick cultivates an awareness of the contracting and expanding of each muscle during each part of the kick. Understanding the bone structure allows the person to clearly visualize and apply proper alignment to each part of the front kick.

The book then describes the basic principles of kicking. Some of the principles are specifically detailed to the front kick, while others apply to all kicks in general. The principles described include target areas, balance, alignment, striking surface, accuracy, speed, and strength. The author provides a clear description of each principle along with an explanation of how the principle relates to the front kick.

Next, the book details the proper execution of the back leg front kick - the primary form of the front kick. The author breaks the back leg front kick down into 8 parts: fighting position, raise knee, coil, midway to impact, impact, recoil, lower knee, and return to fighting position. Each part is then further broken down into 7 -8 technical points, each point pertaining to the position of the feet, knees, upper body, head, etc with a total of 62 technical points for the kick from start to finish. Accompanying the description of each part of the kick are two full-page pictures [front view and side view], providing a quick visual reference of the technical points - perfectly complementing the detailed explanation.

Following the comprehensive explanation of the back leg front kick, the book then goes on to describe 11 variations of the kick. Although they contain less depth of detail [as well as smaller pictures], each description provides all the information necessary to execute the variation, provided that you have read and understand the explanation of the back leg front kick.

The book then describes a wide variety of training and practice methods to help improve the execution of the front kick. Specifically, the book covers several methods in each of skill training, strength training, speed training, and power training.

Next, the book contains a trouble shooting guide. Detailed in this section are 10 common problems people have executing the front kick. Each problem is followed by a description of the most common mistake(s) that cause the problem, and possible remedies to those mistakes.

The trouble shooting guide is followed by a guide to some of the basic applications of the front kick. The kicking applications guide is brief [in comparison to the second Achieving Kicking Excellence series by Shawn Kovacich - Applications in Combat], containing one application for each variations of the kick. But, keep in mind that the book is about how to properly execute the front kick, not about how to use the kick - so I consider the applications section to be an added bonus to the main content of the book.

The Achieving Kicking Excellence series would make an outstanding addition to the library of any martial artist. The book functions as both an exhaustive guide and a valuable reference. I believe that this series would benefit anyone, from the beginner to the expert, regardless of their skill level. The series could easily be used by a beginner, as an aid in learning the techniques; as well as by an expert, looking to refine their execution of the techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars You WILL improve your kick
Although the front kick is usually the first one taught in most martial arts schools, it's arguably one of the most difficult to master. It's not uncommon to see even veteran fighters throw it incorrectly.

Shawn Kovacich is a long-time martial artist with an amazing history that includes competing in brutal full-contact tournaments, setting world records for the Guinness Book of Records (11,000 high kicks in 5 hours) and applying his fighting skill for real virtually every night as a bouncer in some of the toughest joints around.

Shawn is an excellent all-around martial artist with kicks that are extraordinarily flexible, powerful and fast. He shares his knowledge of his kicking ability in a large book series he calls "Achieving Kicking Excellence" that is like nothing else on the market.

In the Front Kick volume, Shawn has included information for every martial artist wanting to make this powerful and versatile kick their own. For the fighter who learns best with lots of photos, the author employs dozens that depict step-by-step over 10 variations of the front kick. For those who want to understand the body mechanics involved, Shawn does an amazing job explaining it all in an easy-to-read format.

The book also includes exercises - weights and free-hand - that target the specific muscles needed to develop your power, speed and accuracy in the front kick.

Achieving Kicking Excellence Front Kick is an information-crammed book on developing your optimum front kick, written by a guy who has truly mastered kicking and applied his knowledge in the ring and in the street.

I've been training, teaching and writing about the martial arts since 1965, and I highly recommend this book.

Most books on martial arts fall into one of two categories: some are written in a format that is beyond the understanding of the reader who may be completely new to martial arts while others dumb down the reader with superficial 'quick fix' problems thinking the reader is already proficient in the fundamentals of Martial Arts. Kovacich respects his reader/pupil, and with great dignity of writing style and unfolds each kick mastery with surety of developmental skill and encouragement of each aspect of a single movement.

The ten volumes include Back Kick, Roundhouse Kick, Front Kick, Side Kick, Crescent Kick, Reverse Crescent Kick, Hook Kick, Wheel Kick, Axe Kick and Hatchet Kick. Having exposure to each of these ten volumes gathers respect for Shawn Kovacich not only as a man who is able to master a tough medium of sport, but also one who has discovered the perfect manner of teaching and communication. The ten volume set is well worth the investment, monetarily and educationally. Grady Harp, May 09

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for perfecting your kicks!
The following review will encompass three books out of Shawn Kovacich's excellent series "Achieving Kicking Excellence."I recently received and tried out Volume 4: Crescent Kick, Volume 5: Reverse Crescent Kick, and Volume 6:Front Kick.

One of the first books I ever picked up when I started training in Karate was Gichin Funakoshi's "Karate-Do Kyohan."My background was primarily in Chinese Boxing but I decided to branch out into other art forms. My instructor at the time told me that Funakoshi's book was essential if I wanted to perfect my form. The book was a fantastic read and definately gave me guidance on my technique.

The reason why I mention "Karate-Do Kyohan" is that this text is recommended by so many instructors in Karate to students for the main purpose of perfecting technique. When someone recommended Shawn Kovacich's series on kicking techniques, I was a little skeptical. How much could you actually write about a front kick, for example?Funakoshi's book only spends 4 pages on specific foot techniques. Most technical training comes from a one-on-one session with a trainer. My perception on this matter has been shattered after spending some time with just three of Kovacich's books.

Each of the three books has a similar format.Chapter one usually addresses the basic anatomy of the specific kick.Chapter two, outlines a stretching routine specific to the kick.Next, Kovacich describes the basic principles of the kicking movement before going into great detail on the primary kick.Once the primary kick is disected, Kovacich teaches you the variations of the kick. The next section, where each book really shines, are a set of excercises designed to increase the power, speed, and flexibility of each kick. The rest of each book is composed of a trouble shooting guide and kicking applications.

The books do not just present the kick as a series of movements.Kovacich provides detail on what muscles you use in the kick, where your balance should be in the transition, what is the best target for the kick, and how to develop speed and power for your kick.I was amazed at how easy the books were to use and how the approach was almost as good as being in a formal setting with an instructor.

Nothing can replace going to an instructor and learning the martial arts under supervision.I will say, however, Shawn Kovacich's "Achieving Kicking Excellence" is the next best thing in terms of elevating your kicking technique. These books are essential companions to the classic kata texts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Detailed, Scholarly and Essential
Volume I: Back Kick in Shawn's Achieving Kicking Excellence series starts from the ground up. Shawn literally begins with human anatomy 101 from the foot, legs, hips, both skeletal and muscular structures that are used to form the kick.He has written an incredibly scholarly work. When I first heard that a martial artist had written 10 volumes on kicking - each on a different core martial arts kick, I thought, yeah - right. How much can you say about any one kick?I thought, there isn't that much knowledge in the universe about kicking that could fill 240 or so pages, even with pictures! Well I was wrong.

What is so amazing about this book and the others in the series is that Shawn has created an easy to follow format that is also very easy to read. I very quickly found myself lost in the details of this book - wanting to absorb as much as I could.I've been teaching martial arts for more than 20 years and yet I never really thought about how much information an instructor might pass on to a student about any particular kick. Each day we cover a few more details and finer points with our students. What Shawn has done a magnificent job of here is capturing, structuring, packaging and synthesizing in one volume, everything a martial artist needs to know about a given kick.If you're going to practice for hundreds of hours, performing thousands of kicks, you need to get it right and understand what you're doing. This goes for the back kick, the side kick or any of the other kicks that Shawn covers in his other volumes.

If you take the time to assimilate this easy to read book, practice the various concepts, drills and stretches, then you will be learning correct kicking from a true master of the art! I highly recommend this book.I have been involved in martial arts for a long time and yet still found a wealth of excellent material; some new to me and some which I already understood.Whether you are a sixth degree black belt or a white belt, this book will serve you as an excellent companion throughout your studies. This book proves that, no matter how long we may have been studying or teaching, there is still more knowledge out that that can help us improve and that we are still always white belts inside.

Buy it! Enjoy it! and you will begin achieving kicking excellence!

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book
For many students, the back kick, especially the turning back kick, can be a real challenge to learn and to perfect. Done well, the kick is arguably one of the most beautiful to behold and, with little argument, one of the strongest in the martial arts.

Shawn Kovacich's fine book, Achieving Kicking Excellent: Back Kick, is a tremendous source to guide you on the path of having the best back kick of which you are capable. Shawn is a long-time martial artist with an amazing history that includes competing in brutal full-contact tournaments, setting world records for the Guinness Book of Records (11,000 high kicks in 5 hours) and applying his fighting skill for real virtually every night as a bouncer in some of the toughest joints around.

It should be noted that this book is just one of many in which Shawn Kovacich shares his knowledge of his kicking ability. Just keyword "Achieving Kicking Excellence" and you will find a variety of kicking books like nothing else on the market.

In the Back Kick text, Shawn has crammed the book with solid information that every martial artist needs to make his or her kick absolute dyno-mite. If you favor lots of photos, you will find that in this easy-to-follow text. If you like lots of detail as to what all makes this kick work, you'll find that in this book, too. It truly is a book for every reader.

Back Kick includes lots of exercises - weights and free-hand - that when followed for just a few months will develop all the specific muscles needed to develop your power, speed and accuracy of the straight back kick, turning back kick and all the other variations.

Achieving Kicking Excellence Back Kick will improve your kick, maybe even make you a master of it.

I've been training, teaching and writing about the martial arts since 1965, and I highly recommend this book.
