My boss is a huge UT fan, and he absolutely loved this book. There are pop outs on almost every page where you can pull out memoriabilia relevant to the history of UT football. It's beautifully illustrated and very reasonably priced, and a perfect coffee table book for any home or bachelor pad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gameplans of the Gridiron
Paul Zimmerman has an advantage over other profootball writers because of two facts. First he was a player, in college and in semipro ball; where he played on the line of scrimmage no less. And second his devotion tocovering the game. There is no writer that covers football that has hishistorical insight into the game, and meticulous analysis of the strategyunderlining it. Zimmerman, also known as Dr. Z to Sports Illustratedreaders demonstrates this knowledge in his 1984 book The New Thinking Man'sGuide to Pro Football. While football is often seen as a game of brutalforce, and violence, beneath this are strategies and planning that make itseem more like organized chaos. Every running play to gain a few yards isplanned carefully in blocking schemes, the reading of a defense by aquarterback if further appreciated when realizing the pressure put upon theman. Each position of a team is divided, and then broken down by Zimmerman. From the offensive line to the scouting department, he gives the reader acareful understanding of each section that makes up a team. While this bookwill appeal to the die-hards, it will also appeal to the casual fan; notonly in what may be learned, but in the human element as well. There arecharacters throughout the book, from Conrad Dobler's maniacal play to JoeDon Looney's loony lifestyle. Zimmerman does not forget that while footballis a carefully planned sport, it is also a game, and there are manycharacters over the years that are just that, characters. Also establishedis the dynamic nature of the sport to show how football is reactionary;where a style of play is established and then acted upon by opposingdefenses and offenses, to create a sport that is in constant change. Unlikebaseball, basketball, or hockey football is a kinetic sport that is proneto new directions and changes over time, changing in style of play due tominor details and this makes it wholly unique. No other writer has capturedthis than Paul Zimmerman in writing about football.

I have followed Bobby Bowden's coaching career since the late 70s, but
being from Alabama myself, it was interesting to learn about his early
years, in Birmingham. I learned he is the fine sincere gentleman, I
always thought he was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Statistical Analysis of Football
This book is an excellent read for anyone who has a genuine interest in football statistics. The authors are actually statisticians themselves, and they go through each phase of the game and attempt to come up withscientific ways to rate each position, including the offensive line!

Thepart I found most interesting was the chapter on quarterbacks and theconventional NFL QB rating system and why it is flawed. From there theauthors go into a lengthy process of building a better rating system, whichmore accurately reflects who the most efficient passers in the NFLare.

You would think being written by a bunch of statisticians, this bookwould be dull, but it is far from it!It is lively and humorousthroughout, and is very easy to read. Also, most of the heavy statisticsare relegated to notes, so if you are not interested in that sort of thingyou can skip it easily.

All told this is an outstanding book to read ifyou are interested in learning the "Nitty-gritty" behind footballstatistics. ... Read more

Product Description

From the war-ravaged streets of Sarajevo, where turning up for training involved dodging snipers' bullets, to the crumbling splendor of Budapest's Bozsik Stadium, where the likes of Puskas and Kocsis masterminded the fall of England, the landscape of Eastern Europe has changed immeasurably since the fall of communism. Jonathan Wilson has traveled extensively behind the old Iron Curtain, viewing life beyond the fall of the Berlin Wall through the lens of soccer. Where once the state-controlled teams of the Eastern bloc passed their way with crisp efficiency—a sort of communist version of total soccer—to considerable success on the European and international stages, today the beautiful game in the East has been opened up to the free market, and throughout the region a sense of chaos pervades. The threat of totalitarian interference no longer remains; but in its place mafia control is generally accompanied with a crippling lack of funds. Jonathan Wilson goes in search of the spirit of Hungary's Golden Squad of the early 1950s; charts the disintegration of the soccer superpower that was the former Yugoslavia; follows a sorry tale of corruption, mismanagement, and Armenian cognac through the Caucasuses; reopens the case of Russia's greatest soccer player, Eduard Streltsov; and talks to Jan Tomaszewski about an autumn night at Wembley in 1973.

5-0 out of 5 stars lifts the curtain
Simply a superb soccer book. It's not just the "big" nations that the author looks at nor are they the most interesting. By delving into such places as Bosnia-Hercegovina, Armenia, Azerbaijin as well as the big boys of Russia, Croatia and Romania we get a truly complete picture on the state of the game both from a historical perspective but with a firm eye on the present and future.

It's so enjoyable to learn a nugget like the "Russian" linesman Tofik Bakhramov who confirmed that England's third goal in the 1966 World Cup Final did cross the line has the national stadium named after him in his native Azerbaijan. The book is filled with these and they are not just thrown in as trivia asides but are investigated and explained in entertaining details.

Here's hoping author Jonathan Wilson is working on a followup as this subject has so many more stories I'm sure to tell even as thorough a job as he did on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jonathan Wilson - Behind the Curtain: Travels in Eastern European Football

Product Description

Every Saturday afternoon from early September to the end of November more than a thousand teams from St. Norbert's (Wisconsin) to Western Kentucky to Ohio State meet in front of crowds as small as several hundred and as large as 100,000. They are participants in an epic that began November 6, 1869, when the men of Princeton and Rutgers decided to test themselves on a field not yet called a gridiron. They are actors playing out their drama on a stage on which an unmatched cast of legendary performers has presented thrilling rivalries, glorious triumphs, and spectacular upsets. It is college football, a tapestry woven of memories as indestructible as they are colorful...threads that have encircled and captivated an audience measured in the millions, and have done so for generations.

Welcome to Rites of Autumn: The Story of College Football, the definitive history of college football, from Fielding Yost's "point-a-minute" Michigan Wolverines of 1901 to Bobby Bowden's undefeated 1999 Florida State Seminoles and everything in-between, before, and since. Here are Red Grange, Illinois's Galloping Ghost; Army's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis, and Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett. Here is that day in 1957 when Bud Wilkinson's 47-game winning streak at Oklahoma was ended by Notre Dame and the Game of the Century when Bubba Smith's undefeated 1966 Michigan State team played also-undefeated Notre Dame to a 10-10 tie. With hundreds of vintage photographs, dozens of primary documents, and a vivid text, Rites of Autumn brings back to life Johnny Rodgers running back a punt for a Nebraska touchdown against Oklahoma in their 1971 Game of the Century; Cal's four-lateral kickoff return for a touchdown -- "The Play" -- that defeated John Elway's 1982 Stanford team; and Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass that beat Bernie Kosar's defending national champion Miami team 47-45 on the last play of the 1984 Thanksgiving Day game.

In this extraordinary volume -- the companion to an equally extraordinary 10-hour prime-time television series -- are the stories of the first forward pass (1876; Yale vs. Princeton), the first huddle (Illinois, 1921), the invention of the flying wedge (Harvard, 1892), and the wishbone (Texas, 1968). Here, "outlined against a blue-gray October sky," are Notre Dame's Four Horsemen and George Gipp, the subject of Knute Rockne's most famous halftime speech, who once told his coach, "Aw, these pep talks are O.K., Rock, I guess, but I got two hundred bucks bet on this game and if you think I'm lying down out there, you're crazy." Here are USC tackle Marion Morrison before he became John Wayne, and the famous letter to Princeton coach Fritz Crisler written by a former student known, when he attended Old Nassau, as Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. In Rites of Autumn prize-winning sportswriter Richard Whittingham brings the most spectacular regular-season games to vivid life, from Jim Thorpe's Carlisle Indian School vs. Army in 1912 to USC's one-point victory over crosstown rival UCLA in 1967. Here are the great coaches, from Pop Warner to Knute Rockne to Eddie Robinson to Joe Paterno; the great African-American tradition, from schools like Southern and Grambling and from players like Paul Robeson, Jackie Robinson, and Jim Brown. And, of course, here are the great rivalries: Army-Navy, Texas-Oklahoma, Notre Dame-USC, and more. With sidebars on everything from Walter Camp's first All-America team to the history of the great Bowl games, conference and national championships, the Heisman and Outland Trophy winners, decade-by-decade all-star teams, and the greatest teams of all time -- all illustrated by an astonishing selection of more than 250 photographs -- Rites of Autumn is a spectacular achievement: the ultimate book for anyone who has ever spent an autumn Saturday following America's most passionately watched sport.Amazon.com Review
Rites of Autumn: The Story of College Football, the companion book to the ESPN series of the same name, is an attractive, broad, yet detailed history of college football, from the first game through the latest bowl victories. Not only does author Richard Whittingham include comprehensive rankings of the top teams, players, and coaches throughout the last century-plus (such as Heisman Trophy winners or the greatest team rivalries), he highlights the choice games and plays, as well as the coaches and gridiron legends that have put their indelible stamp on this truly American sport.

Timelines and photographs complement the text, providing a deep sense of how the sport has evolved. Moreover, the author uses a variety of sources, giving readers bits of poetry, fight-song lyrics, and famous or insightful quotes, along with play-by-plays and a lively narrative. Whittingham put careful thought into his selections, readily admitting the difficulty of winnowing down the lists, and he even includes notes on those that barely missed the cut.

As Whittingham summarizes, "The game itself--violent, tactical, demanding of skills, strength, and endurance--evoked the very essentials of classic drama: conflict, suspense, excitement, competition, triumph, and failure. It is hardly surprising then that it became such a fertile ground for the cultivation of legends." The roar of a crowd, the sense of place or destiny--all of the factors that have led to greatness are described, with statistical support, in this informative, oversized book. Rites of Autumn is for football fans everywhere. --Michael Ferch ... Read more

Better written than the coffee-table book this appears to be by weight and shape, and better written than a television-series companion, which this is, needs to be.

Great pictures, quotes from college football giants, enough information to be informative, enough stories and pictures of big games to be fun.

Sure, worlds not made and lives not changed, but this book is just fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars No football food!!!
I bought this book thinking it would contain great "football" food like wings, nachos, dips, etc.Instead, they are all fancy dishes that have ingredients that I can't even pronounce, and I'm college educated! My husband and I were extremely disappointed as we host football parties on a continual basis. Now if you are looking for fancy recipes, this would be a great book. It's laid out very nicely and has a ton of color photographs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mainly heavy duty meat recipes
This book seems like a flash from the past, (i.e.1950's) lots of meatrecipes with heavy sauces. Was hoping for quick game day dishes and some salads, desserts. Recipes are too complicated and calorie laden for today's diets. It surprised me that there weren't healthier dishes in this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not typical football grub.
I recieved this cookbook as a gift. My sister thought it would be good since we hold football sunday at our house every week. I recieved the book and was disappointed in the selections of recipies. The title is misleading. I was thinking good wing recipies, good bbq, recipies you would not be slaving in the kitchen for hours. It is just a collection of football stars fav recipies not entirely intended to be served on game night. Also selection of recipies is on the football salary. Alot of Claims, salmon, shrimp, lamb, duck, lobster, filet mignon. Poor people dont eat that way. It does have a few good recipies though which i will use. But the book is very nicely done, very colorful and interesting.

Product Description
Bill Peterson told his football players to "pair up in threes and line up in a circle." Not only that he wanted them "standing on their helmets with the sidelines under their arms" when the National Anthem was played. These are just a few of Coach Pete's malapropisms that earned him the title of the "Yogi Berra of Football" while he was gaining national recognition for the little-known Florida State Seminoles in the 1960's. The book "You Can't Become a Football Overnight" is a feel-good read that will leave the reader laughing long after it has been placed on the shelf or coffee table. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for football fans only
When I came to Florida State University in 1964, Bill Peterson was the head football coach. He was the man who put FSU football "on the map", but he is also remembered fondly for his mis-statements, such as "Don't burn your bridges at both ends" and "You can observe a lot by watching."While reading this entertaining book by Jim Crosby I got to reminisce about those times -- football games I attended, former players I saw on the field, and best of all stories about Coach Pete. This isn't a dry old book with play by plays of old games, but rather it is filled with many photos and anecdotes guaranteed to make you smile, even laugh. Sprinkled with comments by former players, such as T.K Wetherell and Gary Huff, the book is a fond and fitting tribute to a great coach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A common sense approach to a National Championship
Coach Galloway gives a common sense approach to solving the dilemma about the college football National Championship. Finally, we have a very simple, direct, and logical plan that makes good sense.I hope the people who make the decisions about the National Championship pay attention to this well-thought-out design for solving this problem.Who can argue with the logic that Coach Galloway gives in presenting his plan? This plan gives a fair chance to every college and university in the nation. What could be better than that?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will challenge you to think outside the box
Brilliant! The author really challenges us to think about a system that will give every team in Division I football a chance at the title. The key is that the author does it all with such a common sense approach you keep saying, "why didn't I think of that?".If you think you have the answer to college footballs annual controversies you need to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Logical, Brilliant
Galloway has written a very concise, logical, easy to read book about what is wrong with the current college football "Championship" and how to fix it. All without placing blame. His focus is on the solution. Galloway presents a solution that is not only logical, it's fair. It removes the politics and puts the game back into the hands of the players and promotes fair and equal play. This is definitely something for fans, players, the schools, and the NCAA to consider. Check it out~ Galloway has a plan to put the `Sportsmanship' back into the sport of college football,

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Decent College Playoff Idea!
Galloway's genius is in the simplicity of his offering - thoughtful, provoking, and a nice back-story.It so appeals to the basic principles and values of pure competition - let the players decide the championship on the field - enough with the computers, sports-writers, and pollsters.I only hope the NCAA and the member schools will listen to Galloway's idea and ultimately satisfy fans, coaches, and players! This book is an easy read and a great idea that any college football fan will love! ... Read more

Product Description

An entertaining fusion of fact, legend, and lore, Notre Dame football has transcended the boundaries of the sport and the university to become a time-honored American tradition. For its legions of devoted fans and alumni, Talking Irish vividly captures it all: the exhilarating wins, the stunning defeats, the tumultuous coaching changes, and the celebrated mystique that surrounds this beloved football dynasty.

With never-before-told anecdotes, this candid and revealing oral history -- the first ever written on Fighting Irish football -- is told in the words of more than 150 Notre Dame players, coaches, leading sports journalists, and school faculty. This rousing narrative begins in the 1940s, a decade after the death of the fabled Knute Rockne, and concludes five decades later, with the formidable exploits of Notre Dame football at the end of the twentieth century.

Amazon.com Review
No football program in the collegiate ranks comes close toNotre Dame's for the sheer weight of myth that cloaks it. Thesmartness of Talking Irish is the way myth both speaks foritself and contradicts itself. Irish is, first and foremost, asolid and anecdotally rich history of Notre Dame football from the1940s to the present, delivered in a series of first-personvoices. These voices, looking back, bring the past into the presentwith immediacy and intimacy. It's a past that isn't quite aspristinely clean as the Irish myth likes to suggest, particularly inthe way coaches and players are pressured not just to win, but to winconvincingly. Many of the contributors are legendary--Angelo Bertelli,Johnny Lujack, Johnny Lattner, Ralph Guglielmi, Jim Lynch, Tim Brown,Chris Zorich, Terry Brennan, Ara Parseghian, Lou Holt, even thebeleaguered Jerry Faust, who comes off especially whiny. This is asmart book that prefers to tackle a sacred cow rather than accept theusual unwavering reverence. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I played at ND in the early 90's as a walk on so I know a bit about the ins and outs of ND football. This book added enormously to my knowledge. It was honest and apparently unfiltered.Huge credit to the author for eliciting and assembling such frank and insightful comment from a range of ND players through the years.Seeing ND football "warts and all" has made me even more passionate about the team.I strongly recommend this book to any college football fan, and it is essential for any ND supporter.Go Irish!

5-0 out of 5 stars Talking Irish
This was a wel written book. This is Notre Dame football at its best. What a read, From the 40's to the 90's told by the people that lived and were Notre Dame football.GREAT JOB!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The true story of Notre Dame football team
TALKING IRISH is one of my favorite book cause M.Delsohn write the story in six part, one for every decade from the 40's to the 90's.It's more easy to read cause you don't jump from things happen in 1965 to go in 1996 the next paragraph and come back in 1953 after, and it's more easy to consult when you need quick informations. In this book you gonna read both sides of the story the good and the bad,I like that cause too much books talk only about the good side of Notre Dame football story,in TALKING IRISH you gonna read a lot of untold story about players, coachs and school direction who take a lot of decisions on the way the team is coach.Starting from the 40's you follow the story of the team with interview of players, coachs and fans about the greatest moments of Fighting irish story until 1997 season. One of the greatest books about one of the greatest college football team,I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I liked this book so much that I didn't want to stop reding it.I was dissappointed when I finished it because I wanted more. The book told all about the history of Fighting Irish football from the 1940s to 1997.The book was almost entirly written from former ND player's accounts. If you like this book, read Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches by Moose Krause. It is muhc like this book.Talking Irish is one of the best books I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GreatRead
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author finds and reports the unfiltered truth as told by the people who lived it.Page after page of fascinating (and previously unreported) stories about Ara, Devine, Montana, etc.A great gift for anyone who loves ND football. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review - Gods of Football
Excellent photographic depiction of some of the best in football.Large, handsome book with beautiful pictures. The photographer did an excellent job with this theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost heaven sent
As a follow up to Gods of Sport, Pedro Virgil's compilation of photos for the well intentioned calendar and cause is a bit of a mixed bag. While Gods of Football is better than Gods of Sport, its presentation is what I found most disappointing.

First off, the photos of these athletic men are overall wondrous. Their bodies and overall care for their beauty is well captured. The photos are grandly presented in color in this equally gorgeously presented book that had me mesmerized for a better part of going through it. Most of the photos compiled here are from the calendar and can also be seen in the "Making of" feature for the calendar, so if you liked some of those poses and settings you'll definitely enjoy looking through the book. For those who care, there is no frontal nudity, although there are some "almost shots," so those wanting such shots should think twice about purchasing and looking into more revealing photography.

This endevor (which I hope becomes yearly) is very much like the Dieux Du Stade series providing a more PG-13 rated experience, with more backsides andoverall bodies shown off. For those of us who do enjoy this type of photography for these models for a day, I would say you will defintely find many to your liking. What I found not so great after the dreamy feeling wore off is that not all the photographs from the "Making of" DVD made it in - this is not a full compilation. This was very disappointing as I wanted to see all the photos captured in that filmed record of the photoshoots. A case in point: Kayne Lawton's tight yellow briefs segment. The rest of him is there, thankfully, but not all. Also, the photography feels a bit jumbled in that there are several out of place shots of the athletes. The series of photos skip around so that some athletes interupt the overall flow of another's shots. There are also more of those white blank pages that are wasted between some photos found in Gods of Sport. Finally, and this may not be a big thing, I found it odd that the book is also jumbled in sequence to that of the DVD. For instance, the ranch photo session is found at the back of the book instead of at the beginning as in the filmed feature.

Overall, I did enjoy this more than Gods of Sport, just not more than the Making of Gods of Football DVD. If you haven't tried Gods of Football in any incarnation, I would say go for the DVD first and see if you like the shots. However, if you're like me and enjoyed the DVD and this type of photography, then I still do recommend the book. The book is far from terrible (especially with what's contained), but it could have been more refined and complete. ... Read more

Product Description
In college football circles, the first Wednesday in February is New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July, and Christmas all rolled into one. It’s payoff time for a year spent screening miles of videotape and probing mountains of data, balancing the promise of a dazzling 40-yard-dash time against the perils of a putrid GPA, and text-messaging high schoolers 50 times a day. It’s the day when coaches across the country camp out in front of their fax machines waiting for their football futures to be decided by a bunch of 18-year-olds.

It’s National Signing Day.

In this surprising and unprecedented dissection of college football’s secret season, author Bruce Feldman takes you deep inside the war room of Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron, the combustible Cajun who built national championship teams at the University of Miami and USC before setting up shop in the Deep South. In a blow-by-blow account of the year leading up to National Signing Day 2007, Feldman reveals the inner secrets of Orgeron’s success, recounting every step along the way as Orgeron and his Ole Miss staff pick 25 winners from a list of 1,000 names.

Meat Market makes the actual football season—the one that runs from September through January—read like a postscript. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very well thought out
I read this book because I'm a big sports fan and am interested in the topic. And, I mildly enjoyed reading it and felt like I learned a little about the subject; but, my primary feeling about it is that it's not a well thought out way to address the subject.Maybe the author wrote it this way because it was easier - he had good access to Coach O.And, I don't mind him using his inside access to glean information, but I wonder how realistic the picture he saw and wrote about is.He presents Coach O as a very hard worker who toes the line on recruiting rules.I wonder if his competitors see him this way?I doubt it, but maybe the author could have expended the effort to find out and present that view.In other words, did he just get worked by Coach O?

Also, I think the book would have been a lot better if the author had placed the most emphasis on the process from the recruit's standpoint. This way the reader could see how the process is carried out by various schools, coaches, etc.In other words, if the author had just kind of alternated chapters between Coach O and his staff and the recruit being pursued by them and others, it could have been a lot better. And, that's the real problem with this book - it's just not a lot better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Ton of insight into the building of a program. Feldman is a good author who covered this subject well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside The war Room
Truely enjoyed the inside look at Ole Miss recruiting. A great account of college football in the Deep South.

1-0 out of 5 stars Snooze fest
As a casual sports fan I thought this book would provide some insight into the world of big time college football recruiting. Instead I was subject to page after page of mind numbing details about watching game film, making phone calls and moving players names around a board. This book could have lost 90% of the 320 pages and still have been too long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like college football? You'll enjoy this book!
This was a great read--spent a couple of days of my Spring Break on it and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Coach O was a better recruiter than he was a call-player. Otherwise, he might still have a job at Ole Miss. ... Read more

Product Description

This volume, that Jack Pardee terms "a dissertation on six-man football," is not only the definitive rule book for the sport, but includes a thorough sixty-five-year history of Texas six-man competition, the teams that have played, and the coaches who have developed and led them. Because of the continual sprinting, dodging, and aggressive contact demanded in every one of the forty minutes of play, six-man games are won on conditioning. For this reason, the book includes a chapter titled "Getting the Team Ready Physically." Strategies for offense and defense are detailed, including the O'Brien Wing Set and the O'Brien Veer, with input, also, for specialty teams. The playbook of over 250 offensive plays from various Texas six-man offensive formations will prove useful to those who compete in the game of six-man football.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is extremly helpful and provided me with valuable information. As a first time 6 man coach, this book is invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six-Man Football
This book by C H Underwood covered the game, A-Z. It would be very useful to a coach or those still playing the game. What it lacks is the influence and thrills it gave to those playing the game. I will be sharing these chapters in my forthcoming book called I Played Too. This will tell the stories of oldtime players who still love the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only reference on 6-man football you will ever need
Coach Underwood has produced the definitive text on six-man football, an absolute necessity for prospective coaches.Even if you have years of experience coaching traditional 11-man football, you need this book.

Under Coach Underwood's careful editorship, "Six-Man Football" covers every base that a fledgling coach needs to master this version.Coach Underwood writes about his own legendary O'Brien Veer offense, then provides seven other offensive systems to choose from in articles written by other legends of Texas six-man football coaching.

This is followed by three chapters on defensive systems, and a chapter each on special teams play and on program building, preparation and conditioning. All in all, this is an entire library on six-man football condensed into one volume.Do not try to coach this unique form of America's game without buying this book!

Highest recommendation.
