3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good book more stories than insights
I liked the book.I thought that there were better stories than insights though.Overall I would buy the book again but was looking for a little more...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on fishing (and life) basics
Despite having a cabin near a nice lake, I hadn't been fishing for many... many... years. When I decided to have a go at it again I set about to find a good book that would give me the basics. What I found was Frank Baron's book which provided not only a good bit of information - but a welcome dose of the philosophy of fishing and... well... of life.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in the topic.Since reading Frank's book I have set out to find others of equal quality, but I haven't found any yet.

"Did you learn anything useful?" you ask.

My first day out I hit the lake early.Following some of the guidance from the book, I moved to the downwind side where I found an area near some structure.I laid my line (rigged per one of Frank's suggestions)where the shade from the trees met the sun on the water (also per Frank's advice).

An hour later I had a nice rainbow in hand.

Since my only goal for the day was to catch dinner, I called it quits after that first fish. (See the chapter in the book on 'fishing ethics'.)

Thank's for a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just when you thought you knew all the answers, you learn more
I really like this book.It was a good refresher and a good reference manual if you want to get back into fishing and have been away for a while. There are some new techniques in here that look promising that I plan to try soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple tips
There really isn't much in this book that your grandpa didn't already teach you.

Would I recommend this book to a friend? No.If you know absolutely NOTHING about fishing, then buy this book. But if you know the basics already, skip it.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining and informative!
Good book full of good information for me as a relative beginner. I love the humorous way the author writes and love his stories.
This is the most reader friendly fishing book I have seen so far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide for knots
This guide is great to provide knowledge of each knot and when to use it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Guide to fl fishing knots
This is a small quickly done booklet that lacks step by step instruction and contains confusing drawings. Take a look at some other knot books before you purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on knots
This a handy little book, the only dislike is that the pages are not waterproof.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Fly Fishing Knots.
This pocket booklet has all the necessary fishing knots and angler will need in the field. It also has good diagrams on how to tie each knot.I will put this booklet in my fishing box or vest and carry it in the field all the time. It is not too big and not too small, but just the right size to put into a zip-lock bag.

Product Description
No one can promise that you will catch fish all the time. Fish, after all, would just as soon never taste a hook or feel the sizzle of a frying pan. For as long as we have been catching fish, fish have also been outsmarting us. "That's why they call it fishing and not catching," goes the old saying. This book will help you fish, and it will help you catch, too. No matter how much you know, there are still a couple of tricks that even the oldest angler can pick up.

For those of you who have never fished, you will find enough in this book to get you started. You don't have to learn everything all at once. If you are already an angler, there are plenty of tips and techniques that you can turn to right away without going through the basics all over again. And you master anglers will also find this book a handy reference for all kinds of fishing questions.

Once you have a few basic pointers, fishing is as easy as falling off a log (which is something you want to avoid, as the splash will scare the fish). Fishing For Dummies will show you how to orchestrate all of your equipment into a fine-tuned fish-catching machine. You'll soon know all about

  • Your fishing equipment, from the rod in your hand to the hook on the very end of the line
  • The fish that people fish for, what they look like, and where they're found
  • The basics of bait-casting, spinning, and fly-casting
  • Fighting, landing, and releasing fish
  • Storing, cleaning, and cooking fish

Fishing is a great joy and a lifetime sport. You will find that there are successful fishing days and unsuccessful fishing days, but there is no such thing as a bad fishing day. This book can make fishing easier and more rewarding for you every time you pick up your rod and reel.Amazon.com Review
You know the saying: Give a man (or woman) a fish, and yougive him dinner; teach a man (or woman) to fish and he'll have dinnerfor the rest of his life. The always entertaining and instructional"... for Dummies" series reeled in witty outdoors writerPeter Kaminsky to keep the rest of us fed--as in food for the tableand food for thought--with this step-by-step guide to pretty muchevery right and obtuse angle on angling. As with all the books in theseries, Fishing is filled with punchy advice, plenty ofdiagrams, and a series of Top 10 lists that should bag aspiringfishers hook, line, and sinker. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basics only
My earliest memory of fishing is finding myself as about a 5 year old, hands in pockets looking across the cold ocean on the seaford pier. There was a bitterly cold breeze blowing in my face and i said to my dad,Dad i'm cold.He snarled back "Be a man".
With that i knew i had to be here until he decided to go home.Sometimes it was the early hours of the morning. That was the sort of logic i've been born into.
However i do enjoy fishing whenever i get the time to do it.
Sometimes i'll even cheat and go to a trout farm.
To rely on luck in catching fish is not the smartest way to go about it.It pays to have a few pointers.
This is a book for the beginner. It goes into all the basics.Instructions in this book are quite easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smarter than before
The book really helped me, especially since I am just getting into the sport. It gave good insight in so many areas.I gave it four stars instead of five because I was left wanting more than the book provided. But from a beginner's standpoint, it was well worth the money spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fishing for Dummies Mini
Although the product was not what I was looking for it was my own fault. I didn't look at the description. It came in the great condition and very quick. The seller worked with me and was very helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Wanted
I was just looking for ideas how to get my message out on the inter net, you know, how to pester and infuricate Liberals on account of the Lord told us to be fishers of men but I suppose that He also meant women, and to troll along this here worlds biggest river of misinformation to catch me some dummies that would get pi**ed off enough to answer my comments so's I'd have a sense of being noticed and important like I see some strong Christins and conservatives doing, but this book is only about catching catfish and croakers when everbody knows they ain't no more natural fish in our rivers cuz all the welfare chiselers and illegals went and caught everthing with fins using velveeta for bait! Dang, I sure wish some bozo would teach me how to troll!

(By the way, I'll be glad to pay top dollar for any real fish any first-time fisherman catches after reading this book.)

    Product Description
A pocket guide that offers insightful, plainspoken, expert advice for every fly fisher. Two highly respected outdoor journalists, Kirk Deeter of Field & Stream and Charlie Meyers of the Denver Post, have cracked open their notebooks and shared straight-shot advice on the sport of fly fishing, based on a range of new and old experiences—from interviews with the late Lee Wulff to travels with maverick guides in Tierra del Fuego.

The mission of The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing is to demystify and un-complicate the tricks and tips that make a great trout fisher. There are no complicated physics lessons here. Rather, conceived in the “take dead aim” spirit of Harvey Penick’s classic instructional on golf, The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing offers a simple, digestible primer on the basic elements of fly fishing: the cast, presentation, reading water, and selecting flies. In the end, this collection of 240 tips is one of the most insightful, plainly spoken, and entertaining works on this sport—one that will serve both novices and experts alike in helping them reflect and hone in their approaches to fly fishing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book!
I am new to fly fishing and found this to be a very thorough guide with tons of useful information. Also, I bought the book in 'used' condition and it was like new so the book was an excellent value. Very very fast shipping from this 3rd party seller.

3-0 out of 5 stars L.L. Bean Ultimate book of Fly Fishing
This book is very well done and has a wealth of good information. Unfortunately it is presented as the Ultimate "Fly Fishing " book but a great deal of the book is devoted to Fly Tying not Fly Fishing . Had I know that this much of the book was on Fly tying I would not have bought the book..

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide
This book was much more informative to a new trout fisherman than the Amazon recommended The Orvis Fly-Sishing Guide, Completely Revised and Updated with Over 400 New Color Photos and Illustrations.I bought both books, along with The Orvis Guide to Beginning Fly Fishing: 101 Tips for the Absolute Beginner, as a package from Amazon. This book was quite a bit more informative than the Orvis book. While expected promotion of the Orvis brand, the Orvis book is practically a sales catalog for the Orvis brand, whereas the LL Bean book focused more on casting techniques and other much needed information, that was less in depth with the Orvis book. Also, the Orvis book dedicates way too many pages to fly tying, well over 1/3rd of the book, an art that is surely lost on the beginner fly fisherman.I firmly believe that most new fly fisherman will buy flys for quite a while before beginning to tie their own. There is so much to learn and practice in fly fishing to take on the art of fly tying in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent all around beginner's book
I just started fly fishing and this book has proved to be an excellent buy.recommend that anyone interested in the sport first invest in themselves by taking a lesson from a professional fly fishing instructor (i found mine on craigslist in Houston - Robert Logan - highly recommend him).after you take a basic lesson, this book makes a lot of sense and provides you with indepth science of fly fishing as well as insane amount of pictures, drawings, and step by step instructions on how to do it all - from soup to nuts. does do a very light sell on LL Bean products/services, but nothing overbearing or too in your face.

After following the advice from a manual called "How to Meet and Marry Mr Right", Jane learns that in love there is neither pattern nor promise. This is a funny collection of connected stories and a portrait of Jane, a woman manoeuvring her way through love, sex and relationships.Amazon.com Review
Jane Rosenal, the narrator of The Girls' Guide to Hunting andFishing, is wise beyond her years. Not that that's saying much--sincenone of her elders, with the exception of her father, is particularly wise.At the age of 14, Jane watches her brother and his new girlfriend, searching for clues for how to fall in love, but by the end of the summershe's trying to figure out how not to fail in love. At twice thatage, Jane quickly internalizes How to Meet and Marry Mr. Right, even though that retro manual is ruining her chances at happiness. In theintervening years, Melissa Bank's heroine struggles at love and work. Theformer often seems indistinguishable from the latter, and her experiencesin book publishing inspire little in the way of affection. As Janeannounces in "The Worst Thing a Suburban Girl Could Imagine": "I'd been arising star at H----- until Mimi Howlett, the new executive editor, decided I was just the lights of an airplane."

Bank's first collection has a beautiful, true arc, and all thesophistication and control her heroine could ever desire. In "The FloatingHouse," Jane and her boyfriend, Jamie, visit his ex-girlfriend in St.Croix, and right from the start she can't stop mimicking her beautifulcompetitor, in a notably idiotic fashion. "I'm like one of those animalsthat imitates its predators to survive," she realizes--one ofseveral thousand of Bank's ruefully funny phrases. But even as Jane clownsaround, desperately trying to keep up appearances, she is so hyperaware ithurts. Again and again, the author explores the dichotomy between life asit happens and the rehearsed anecdote, the preferred outcome. In TheGirls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing, even suburban quiet has "nothing todo with peace." Bank's much-anticipated debut merits all its buzz and, more to the point, transcends it. --Kerry Fried ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps Me Coming Back
I first read this about four years ago, and when I re-read it this weekend, it amazed me how much I remembered, how many sentences seemed to describe my life, how the spaces between them invited me to linger. Her spare style communicates succinctly, allowing the reader room to imagine, without ever being vague. I love the vignettes, especially in the beginning, which establish relationships and characters with just one or two lines of dialogue. The stories are not all about one person, but Jane is certainly the primary character, and much is told through her first-person view. The stories are quick and filling, funny and smart, humble and true. One of the best books I've ever read, and one to which I'll continue to return.

4-0 out of 5 stars Girls grow up
"The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing" is funny, insightful, empowering. It taught me that a coming of age story doesn't have to be a contiguous chronology. It can skip periods, or years even, which may tighten the story and make it better. The last chapter, in which the protagonist argues (in her head) with two authors of a twin book to "The Rules" is my favorite.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting at times, but mostly bland
This book apparently had a lot of hype surrounding it several years ago, and reading it now I have no idea why it was so successful. I found this novel to be very dry and the characters to be very flat. There is a difference between simple, powerful prose and sentences that simply lack detail and any emotion whatsoever. I understand completely how an author may think that a simpler, more juvenile writing style adds a flair and a certain art to a piece of writing, but for this novel I think it diminished the quality.

At the end of the novel, I know very little about Jane, almost as little as I knew of her from the very first chapter (which was really the only part of this entire book I enjoyed). Jane's relationship with Archie was interesting, as well as her relationship with Jamie; however, I don't think these relationships were explored to the extent they could have been and I did not connect with any of the characters because of the complete lack of emotion throughout the entire novel. Also, the continuity problems were very distracting, right along with the random chapters thrown in about characters that Jane never even met. I really don't understand the point of that. If you have a short story and you can't get it published on its own that does not mean you should randomly place it into your novel.

The author certainly has talent, and there are a few one-liners in this book that are well written, interesting, or funny. But to read an entire book in this style, completely devoid of details, grows old very quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars breezy fun
This book was the perfect antidote after having been weighed down by some serious non-fiction.Jane Rosenal is a single thirty-something whose best asset is her wit, and the book is full of LOL quips.Although it seems to invite comparisons to Bridget Jones's Diary, this is not a diary, and it has a few sad events as well.In fact, there's a middle chapter that's narrated by a neighbor of Jane's aunt that seems to be not even tangentially tied to the rest of the book, and I didn't quite get that.Back to Jane.We witness her relationships with her family, her boss, and her various lovers, especially Archie, who's at least 20 years older, and who serves as sort of a mentor, teaching her to trust her instincts where work is concerned. Now if only she had trusted her instincts with regard to him!I thoroughly enjoyed the author's breezy style, which, in times of sadness, seemed a little inappropriate, but frankly, I'd prefer that to tear-inducing heavy-handedness.One unfortunate consequence, though, is that the story is not particularly memorable, except for the ending. Here Jane becomes more Bridget Jones-y, as she starts listening to the voices from a book that advises playing hard to get and resisting the urge to be funny.Unfortunately, Jane decides to apply this advice when she finally meets a guy who appreciates her for who she is, with near-disastrous results.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I have ever read!
This book is all over the place. There are some random chapters in it that have nothing to do with the main character. towards the end of the book its like she goes crazy. I am sad I wasted my money on this book. ... Read more

Mr. Quigley has topped his last book (I also reviewed that). He is so obviously filled with passion on this subject it makes it a joy to read and refer back to. This "Old Timer" has many great years and stories yet to share.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital to the seasoned and the new angler alike.
Ed Quigley has written an accurate practical guide to the sport of fly fishing. As an owner of a fly shop I have many customers looking to take up fly fishing and to learn its intricacies, this is the perfect book for that person. It is ideal for the new angler, and is a great read for the intermediate and advanced angler as well. This would be a great gift for your favorite angler or for yourself. From knots, to insects, to help with gear selection, this book is an asset to the fly fishers library.

5-0 out of 5 stars sage advice from an old timer!
An excellent book filled with great advice, and also many funny and interesting stories from the author's experiences on the water. These make it an easy and enjoyable read.A nice gift idea for both novice and experienced fly fishermen.

5-0 out of 5 stars So practical ... so fun to read
I bought this book as a gift for my son who is new to fly fishing. He loved the practical tips AND the fun-to-read examples. His father-in-law -- a lifelong fisherman -- kept borrowing the book so much that I got him a copy, too. This is a really nice, conversational book. It is packed with illustrations and photos on just about everything you'd want to know about fly fishing. Reading it, you come away with really ingenious ways to stay comfortable in cold/hot/windy weather ... get the right equipment and flies ... make a cast, land a fish, and more. It's the kind of book you browse cover to cover then keep handy forever!

    DEBUT FICTION

What does it take to make us believe in the impossible?

For Dr. Alfred Jones, life is a quiet mixture of civil service at the National Centre for Fisheries Excellence and marriage to Mary—an ambitious, no-nonsense financier. But a strange turn of fate from an unexpected direction forces Jones to upend his existence and spend all of his time in pursuit of another man’s ludicrous dream. Can there be salmon in the Yemen? Science says no. But if resources are limitless and the visionary is inspired, maybe salmon fishing in the Yemen isn’t impossible. Then again, maybe nothing is.

    Amazon.com Review
British businessman and dedicated angler Paul Torday has found a way to combine a novel about fishing and all that it means with a satire involving politics, bureaucrats, the Middle East, the war in Iraq, and a sheikh who is really a mystic.Torday makes it all work in a most convincing way using memos, interviews, e-mails, and letters in clever juxtaposition.

Dr. Alfred Jones is a fisheries scientist in Great Britain who is called upon to find a way to introduce salmon into the desert in Yemen. The Yemeni sheikh will spare no expense to see this happen. He says:

It would be a miracle of God if it happened.I know it... If God wills it, the summer rains will fill the wadis... and the salmon will run the river. And then my countrymen... all classes and manner of men--will stand side by side and fish for the salmon. And their natures, too, will be changed. They will feel the enchantment of this silver fish... and then when talk turns to what this tribe said or that tribe did... then someone will say, "Let us arise, and go fishing."

Such is the sheikh's vision. He tells Alfred:"Without faith, there is no hope.Without faith, there is no love." Alfred has no religious faith and has been mired in a loveless marriage for twenty years, so these words seem fantastic to him.

Alfred and Sheikh Muhammad connect immediately through their mutual love of fishing, despite Alfred's misgivings about the viability of the project. The Prime Minister's flack man tells Alfred that he must persevere and succeed because Great Britain needs some positive connection to the Middle East, something other than a failing, flailing war. These kinds of political alliances are always shaky at best, and when things start to go sideways, allies have a way of disappearing.Alfred soldiers on, with the help of the lovely Harriet, Sheikh Muhammad's land agent, and the project is readied for opening day, when the Sheikh and the Prime Minister will have a 20-minute photo op.

All of the faith and good will in the world cannot overcome the forces ranged against them, bringing tragedy to everyone involved.Despite all, Alfred's interior life is changed immeasurably. He says in the end: "I believe in it, because it is impossible." --Valerie Ryan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Political Satire in a Salmon-Fishing Guide
This cleverly-written book tells you everything you need to know about raising salmon and fishing for them--very interesting, whether you fish or not. The real story is a biting critique of political opportunism and refusal to accept responsibility for choosing the wrong course. In addition Paul Torday is a fine creator of sympathetic characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not only for anglers: a thoughtful fable
A British, totally secular fisheries expert spearheads a sheik's scheme to bring the comforts, and faith, inherent in angling to the desert. This idealism infuses a thoughtful narrative about diplomacy, hope, and fate. Mixing genres, styles, and voices, bureaucrats, lovers, soldiers, politicians, terrorists and pundits jostle in short chapters which construct a light but instructive fable.

Torday manages to capture the tone of how a yuppie banker vs. a Scottish local newspaper, an Al-Qaeda operative vs. an extract from "Hansard," a scientist's diary vs. a Prime Minister's PR man, would add to the complicated reactions to the sheik's proposal to flood a Yemeni wadi with tanks, sluices, and cooling to support fish imported from Britain. The audacious plan's unfolding leads to the main character, Dr. Alfred Jones, confronting the stagnation of his marriage, the routine of his job, and the contrast between a land where a "Sunday ritual" means shopping at Tesco's vs. an Arab culture where faith in its simplicity, apart from fanaticism, enriches life and brings solace to a country where the divine religion still allows dignity despite the absence of the fatal faith of the West, the religion of money.

I came to this out of its title, and my interest in Yemen. I recommend Tim Mackintosh-Smith's "Yemen," (reviewed by me) better called by its British title, "Dictionary Land," as a companion to this novel. I know nothing about fishing, but a glossary and a steady stream of subtle explanations allow any reader to follow easily the angling terms and biological data. The shifts between materials and speakers and writers keep the novel moving, if perhaps slightly off-kilter at times.

The success of Sheikh Muhammed's project pulls in events as disparate as the war in Iraq, a TV pilot, ecological and fishery activists, Islamic fundamentalists, and the simple, nagging question of how Western and Muslim societies struggle towards common ground in an ancient, humble hobby. The landscape of Yemen does not emerge until nearly two-thirds of the way through, but the novel deepens and widens its scope as we see through English eyes the meaning of what the sheikh has tried to show his skeptical colleagues: "Faith comes before hope, and hope before love." This lesson will change more than one life, and alter more than one course, as the novel reaches its conclusion.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lighthearted and funny fishing tale
I was fishing for trout in Canada and someone recommended this book.If you are an avid fisherman who likes light, bittersweet, satires a la Christopher Buckley, you'll adore Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.I'll venture to say that even if you aren't an avid fisherman, you'll find it amusing.

At first blush, this isn't a great idea for a book.Introducing salmon into Yemen isn't just a crazy idea. It's environmentally ridiculous and a tremendous waste of resources, the equivalent of growing soybeans in Saudi Arabia. It's a daunting task from a writer's standpoint to make it seem like an amazing human achievement. But somehow, the author eventually makes you suspend disbelief.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen actually starts off very slowly, but it's one of those rare books that keeps getting better with every page.Don't stop at page 100 or so.Keep going.By page 150, you'll be hooked.Sorry I had to get that pun in there.

The writing isn't great, but it is adequate. What makes this novel work is the plotting and the ironic sight gags. There are a couple of comic set pieces that do nothing to advance the plot, but are as funny as anything. As is usual with British novels, the sexually charged romance parts of this book are rather lame and clunky. But it's really the fishing and politics that are important here, not the romance. There are some very inventive twists along the way, but I don't want to spoil the fun and reveal them.

All in all, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a very enjoyable and amusing novel perfect for a coast to coast flight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
A novel full of whimsy and delight, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a must-read for every fisheries biologist who also happens to be an Arabist.Paul Torday fills his book with intriguing information, both on the nature of salmon recruitment and ideal oxygen levels, and daily cultural life in the Yemen, like references to the untouchable Yemeni class of the Akhdam.(And it is a very rare book indeed that even acknowledges that they exist.)I read this book while I was traveling through Yemen, and was enthralled with the accurate references to life I saw around me.

But the novel is engaging purely on the story level.Torday has an ingenious method of getting the reader's attention through a serious of progressively revealing emails, and then you are full bore into the lives of the protagonists, anxious to find out what happens next to Dr. Alfred Jones.Torday continues the correspondence method, but you don't feel like you're reading letters, press releases, and inquisitions; you forget as you listen to the play-by-play conversations and developing emotions. And though there is romance here, it doesn't develop at all as one might expect- nor, at the end, is the true romance with whom you expected.

And for those who are interested, Torday has something to teach as well- in a purely non-overbearing manner. There is religion, and there is spirituality, and not always are the two divided. There is a knowledge of God, and the knowledge of one's Lord that comes from intimacy. And contrary to what we often here in stereotypes of the world's religions, that intimacy can show up in some of the most surprising places.

I have no reservations in declaring this the finest Yemen fish novel I've ever read. (And that actually says something- I found it slightly better than the other great Yemeni marine biology work, Pirates, Bats, And Dragons: A Science Adventure (Science Adventures).)If you love the Middle East and you love fishes, you will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilariously Accurate Insight Into How Governments Work
As a former state fisheries scientist myself, I have to say that Paul Torday's book provides a hilariously accurate account of how governments actually work in the best traditions of the "Yes Minister" TV programme.

Torday's story of how a project, which is considered to be scientifically impossible by reclusive expert Alfred Jones, can be catapulted into an absolute priority by political intervention, is frighteningly accurate, as is the actual fisheries science quoted by the author.

The characters involved are also a delight - ranging from the introverted Dr Jones, to the visionary multi-billionaire shiek and the troubled project manager Harriet Chetwode-Talbot. But best of all, the Prime Minister's PR advisor and compulsive Blackberry user, Peter Maxwell is a wonderful comic creation who leaps off the page and has the reader skipping ahead to pages where he next appears.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants a good laugh, as well as an insight into the way things ARE actually done in the corridors of power.

I wasn't sure this book would be all I hoped it would be, but it IS, and more. This guy is a PhD, and really knows his stuff, but he describes the technical details along with the cruising lifestyle and serious fishing, and man, what a read.If you have ever dreamed on boating around in the Caribbean and catching fish and grilling them up right on your boat, here is the how-to-do-it book.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2VCBI5U2D7R0O Last month I helped a friend deliver his sailboat from Cabo to San Diego - a 5 day cruise.A well-worn dog-eared (and signed!) copy of this book was on board. I used the book to figure out knots, rig a hand-line, select and position the lure and properly kill, bleed and fillet a bonita tuna (actually two). Also used recipe suggestions in the book to prepare sashimi, ceviche, and seared tuna. Results are in the video. If you are cruising and fishing, you need this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exremely Helpfull
Very good Learning book for Salt Water Fishing , Fishes Habbits and Behavoir , Fishing Tool , How to track your fish prey .....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information...Good for old salts and new fishermen alike.
The information in this book is very complete. It assumes little knowledge of saltwater fishing and gives a great overview and how-to on many different types of fishing. If you are new into the world of saltwater fishing it is a great way to find out information on different types fishing in saltwater. If you are like me and are very versed in specific kids of fishing (surf fishing), it is a great way to open your eyes to new types of fishing in the same water.
A couple issues I have with the book are: 1.Overly cautious (understandable for lawsuits I guess).Every part of this book elaborates on safety tips, which I deem sometimes too safe; Just my thought. 2. Not a lot of information on any one thing. While it does do a good job describing all the types of fishing, it fails to provide in-depth writing on any one topic. But, as this book is a general book in nature, I am ok with the writing it provides on the various topics.
Thing I like are: 1. Species coverage. It covers many different types of saltwater game fish and multiple ways to fish them, where to fish them, and baits to use. 2. Color pictures of a lot if different species.
This book is a must buy for any fan of saltwater fishing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Fishing Knots, Lines, and Leaders
Nice book. BUT - I don't agree to be "complete" book for knots and information. Nice pictures, but again lack of knot varities or quantities. Some knots are complicated and don't show detail information or enough steps to finish the knot. They are missing some very good and important knots. Again - it's a good "not so comlete" book.

Although not an expansive collection of every knot in the world, this book contains a library of many useful knots for nearly every fishing application. It's descriptions of the knots are clear and illustrated quite nicely. It certainly contains more knots than I would ever use in my lifetime.

One of the better books I have read on fishing. My old man took us out as kids and never really learned the right way, so needed to read up.

I take my kids now and needed some tricks and tips, I really enjoyed the format and it was not like I had to read the book I could flip through and digest and come back and read more later.

    I highly recommend the book!!!!

Book is in better condition than described, that is to say, the description was modest.
Shipping was a bit slow, about 9 days.
I'm very satisfied with purchase overall based on condition and price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner
I can see how this book would be helpful to an experienced angler. It's mostly a compendium of tips and has some nice charts that collects useful information into easy-to-read one-pagers. For the person who is new to fishing, as I am however, it's not as useful. There's very little -- really almost none -- introductory information, and the author often uses fishing jargon without explanation. Overall, it's readable enough that I've ordered the author's "Fishing Basics" book, which sounds like what I was hoping this book would be.

While there are a number of good books on freshwater fishing, this one is way out ahead of the others. It contains many detailed instructions for special techniques. The author is neutral regarding both type of fishing as well as brands of gear. If you like a lot of folksy fish tales, try some of the other good books. This one focuses on workable techniques -- many of them ingenious -- using easy-to-find equipment, materials and baits. I'm itching to put more of them into practice. The book is laid out in such a way that you can quickly get to the information that interests you. Lots of diagrams illustrate the methods described. If you buy only one freshwater fishing book, make it this one. If you're going to buy several, get this one first. ... Read more

    Product Description

From childhood on, Ernest Hemingway was a passionate fisherman. He fished the lakes and creeks near the family's summer home at Walloon Lake, Michigan, and his first stories and reportages were often about his favorite sport. Here, collected for the first time in one volume, are all of his great writings about the many kinds of fishing he did -- from trout in the rivers of northern Michigan to marlin in the Gulf Stream.

In A Moveable Feast, Hemingway speaks of sitting in a café in Paris and writing about what he knew best -- and when it came time to stop, he "did not want to leave the river." The story was the unforgettable classic, "Big Two-Hearted River," and from its first words we do not want to leave the river either. He also wrote articles for the Toronto Star on fishing in Canada and Europe and, later, articles for Esquire about his growing passion for big-game fishing. His last books, The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream, celebrate his vast knowledge of the ocean and his affection for its great denizens.

Hemingway on Fishing is an encompassing, diverse, and fascinating collection. From the early Nick Adams stories and the memorable chapters on fishing the Irati River in The Sun Also Rises to such late novels as Islands in the Stream, this collection traces the evolution of a great writer's passion; the range of his interests; the sure use he made of fishing, transforming it into the stuff of great literature.

Anglers and lovers of great writing alike will welcome this important collection.Amazon.com Review
When the taciturn hero of Hemingway's "Big Two-Hearted River"returns from the Great War, he heads straight to the northern Michiganwoods to begin the process of healing. Camping along the river andfishing for trout, Nick Adams slowly retrieves the elements of a lifeinterrupted, allowing familiar sensations to wash over him:

He stepped into the stream. It was a shock. His trousersclung tightly to his legs. His shoes felt the gravel.... There was atug on the line. It was his first strike. Holding the now living rodacross the current, he brought in the line with his left hand. The rodbent in jerks, the trout pumping against the current.
Later, breaking his leader on a large fish, he reels in, feeling "alittle sick, as though it would be better to sit down." More than onecritic has called "Big Two-Hearted River" the author's greatest short story.Certainly it's a model of the form, written in the uncluttered prosethat Hemingway made his trademark. That he struck such a deep, cathartic chord with what seems on the face of it like a simple fishtale is no accident: Hemingway would return to his love of anglingtime and again over the course of his career.

Hemingway onFishing collects the bulk of the author's angling-relatedwritings, including other Nick Adams stories and excerpts from severalnovels--most notably, the memorable wine-soaked pilgrimage to Spain'sIrati River in The SunAlso Rises. However, the lesser-known newspaper and magazinearticles may elicit even more interest among readers. A piece that the21-year-old Hemingway wrote for the Toronto Star Weekly inAugust 1920 reveals his rather precocious confidence. "At present thebest rainbow trout fishing in the world is in the rapids of theCanadian Soo," he announces in the first paragraph, and then proceedsto scotch any hopes of an easy catch:

It is a wild andnerve-frazzling sport and the odds are in favor of the big trout whotear off thirty or forty yards of line at a rush and then will sulk atthe base of a rock and refuse to be stirred into action by the pumpingof a stout fly rod aided by a fluent monologue of Ojibwayianprofanity.

By 1933, Hemingway was writing about histrue angling passion--deep-sea big-game fishing--for the likes ofEsquire and other large-circulation glossies. In "Marlin of theMorro: A Cuban Letter," he notes that when the northeast trade windsblow, the "marlin come to the top and cruise the wind." To catch afish, the saying goes, you must think like one--and Papa's perceptivedescriptions of piscine behavior show why he was considered one of thepremiere anglers of his day. It's true that Hemingway indulged hispassions in life and on the page, and that sometimes the former gothim into trouble. As for the latter, those of us who enjoy a good fishstory are the luckier for it. --Langdon Cook ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Stories
Perfect for anyone who enjoys Hemingway, fishing, and/or just reading about fishing. Some of the best pieces are from magazine articles he wrote about fishing in Europe and on the Gulf Stream. It is also nicely divided in to different sections, and it is not necessary to read from cover-to-cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of Hemingway's best at fishing...
Ernest Hemingway, beside being the premier American author of the twentieth century, also fished quite avidly. The assorted writings in "Hemingway on Fishing" range from articles written for magazines, to portions of books such as "The Sun Also Rises" and "Old Man and the Sea." One of the stories rivals the Old Man and the Sea when it comes to futility and heartbreak in fishing for marlin. Excellent book: if you enjoy Hemingway and the fish of the sea, get your hands on a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please -- no more literature critics....
This book is a "matter of fact" gathered from the thoughts of a fellow who enjoyed the outdoors more than his own life. Within the pages of this 'compilation' a person can understand a little more about a poet that was not revealed through many of the original passages. As I have personally read, many of Hemingway's articles, short stories and novels are written from hindsight and many personal experiences, albiet great compositions;there was a literate outcome and method.
Nick Lyons is a great writer on his own and he has had much of a collection to work with in preparing this book. His [Lyons] piecing of this puzzle has made good sense and his additions have overwhelmed the possibilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hemingway on Fishing
This is an excellent collection of Hemingway's writings about fishing, each taken from a larger work. It is a great introduction to Hemingway if your new to him, and a great refresher to him if you've been away for awhile. Read this book and you won't be disappointed, but please do each work the respect of reading the book it came from, and experience each work in it's original context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gathers Hemingway's writings about angling
Hemingway On Fishing gathers Hemingway's writings about angling, and while it fits into our 'literature' section quite neatly with its flowing prose and evocative descriptions, it's the fisherman who will appreciate Hemingway's passion for the sport. Nick Lyons edits the presentation and provide an introduction, Jack Hemingway the foreword in this classic treatise. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fishing Basics, Gene Kugach
I found Fishing Basics to be pretty basic!Or, what one would consider a common sense approach to fishing. The funny thing is everything is simple once someone takes the time to explain it.One example in Fishing Basics is what time of day to fish based on the season - now I know why I wasn't catching any fish on a hot day with no over brush or underpass to provide shade for the fish! Now who would ever guess that fish like shade on hot days just like us humans.Another good section was on fishing "structure," which addressed where to fish in lakes, ponds, river banks, etc.About a quarter of the book was dedicated to Lure making. When you consider that you can buy a lure for under $2 versus buying materials and tools to make the lures, this wasn't a turn-on for me.Rick, South (New) Jersey

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Fisherman
Purchased this book to learn more on fishing basics.Have fished for over 50 years but there is always something I have found that may not have been passed down through the ages from father to son or daughter. This book explained in clear terms and pictures rigging and techniques that are useful and practical to the everyday fisherman. Have fished for trout but was not as familiar with bass and panfish.Found this text very helpful.Plan on keeping it around for my kids and grandkids.

It was in pretty great condition and was delivered well within the time period. I recommend buying it on here instead of at an expensive bookstore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books, bad Kindle editon
So I finally decided to try out this Kindle thing and this was the first book I purchased because it's an old favorite. The three books are as good as ever, but the Kindle edition has a lot of typos which I suspect are from a lazy OCR transcription.

Hopefully these things get ironed out eventually, otherwise, going from print to Kindle is like transferring all of your good-quality music CDs to poorer-quality digital files (oh, wait I'm doing that too).

My review of the book: five stars

for the Kindle edition: three stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Brautigan's "Trout fishing in America"

This used to be one of my favorite books. I'd forgotten about it until I heard or saw something on the "tube". Interesting views.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trout Fishing, Indeed
I noted in a recent review of a film documentary about the literary exploits and influences of the "beat" generation of the 1950s on my generation, the "Generation of `68", that we were a less literary generation. That was one of the things that drew me to the beat literary figures like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs, among others. Our generation was driven more by the sound of music and fury. Although I believe that statement holds up over time it is not true that there were no literary figures who tried to express for us what the landscape of mainstream American was like, and why it desperately needed to be changed. Enter one Richard Brautigan and his exploration on that theme, "Trout Fishing In America"

This little book drew my attention first for its cover (see linked "Wikipedia" entry for a view) more than anything literary since I was not then familiar with Brautigan's name or work. However, the photograph of Brautigan and his "muse" showed me all I needed to know to go inside. He (and she) look exactly like the poster children for the San Francisco experience of the 1960s. And like god's own vision of what the American West would have been populated with if the "greed heads" hadn't gone and burned up, mined, polluted, and otherwise destroyed everything they could get their hands on (and more).

And that last statement can stand, my friends, for Brautigan's motivation in writing this book. In a series of vignettes not, unfortunately, always creating a seamless plot Brautigan gives an alternative look at some funny, weird, crazy American types as he travels throughout the West in the early 1960s alone at times, and with wife and child at others. The title of the book recurs in several variations throughout (as sport, as a name, as a place, etc.). If you like a little off-beat theme, or are just curious about what those "hippies" were up to in the 1960s here is one of our own. Trout fishing, indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't think of a title for this review
I'm struck by the strong polarization of reviews for Trout Fishing in America. That tells me right away that there is something worth investigating here.

I have read this book countless times over the past 30 years, and I am still at a loss to explain its charms. Yes, on the surface, it seems like a bunch of disconnected and aimless stories. But they all have a way of burrowing into the psyche, and I find myself carrying little fragments of the book around in my head all of the time. There are images, ideas and phrases in the book that are reminiscent of vivid dream fragments. In some ways, it is like music, because I can remember exactly when and where I was when I read certain passages.

I feel sorry for those who don't "get" it. It is not a linear story with a beginning, middle, and end and clever character development, so I can understand their frustration. But the point of the book isn't what it says, but what it does. It isn't a story, it's an experience. You may read through several chapters at a sitting without feeling one way or another about it, but then find little pieces coming to mind in the following days.

And it is all grounded in some basic truth. The stories all have an uncanny directness about them, and typically involve the basic elements of living... the earth, a house, rain, a road, a stream, fish, the sun, friendship, history, ketchup, kool-aid, mayonnaise. ... Read more
