Editorial Review Product Description A distillation of the practice and philosophy of prominent international dressage trainers, this guide is instructive to those who aspire to classical horsemanship principles. A rider must first train themselves in correct posture and a thorough understanding of the aids before training the horse, according to the philosophy within this manual. Next, the volume highlights the value of establishing rapport with the horse, enhancing the animal’s mental responses, and developing its physique with groundwork before progressing to training under the saddle. Filled with detailed notes and remedies for common problems, the text focuses on thorough, incremental development of the basic gaits, explains the value and execution of the lateral exercises, and introduces advanced work including tempi changes, pirouettes, piaffe, and passage. She shows readers how each should look, explains common mistakes and how to avoid them, and then describes the benefit of the exercise and how it contributes to the dressage training scale. In addition, emphasis is placed on the horse as an individual and customizing movements and lessons to benefit any animal, with their particular physical and psychological characteristics in mind. Editorial Review Product Description For nearly 400 years, four illustrious riding schools have striven for perfection in the equestrian art: the Spanish Riding School in Vienna; the Cadre Noir in Saumur, France; the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez, Spain; and the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art in Lisbon. Each school is a guardian of traditions—ancient, technical, and artistic—and together they have preserved and enriched the long dressage tradition. This meticulously researched study reveals the inner workings of each of these schools, including details about their traditions, their systems for recruiting and training riders, and of course their horses. It also discusses the future of these prestigious yet seemingly anachronistic establishments. Customer Reviews (3)

20. Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage: A Search for a Classical Alternative by Philippe Karl

list price: US$64.95 -- used & new: US$39.13 (price subject to change: see help) Asin: 3861279533 Average Customer Review: Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan
Editorial Review Product Description One of the most outspoken critics of the modern dressage world reveals some disturbing facts about the physical, anatomical, and mental effects through official dressage guidelines as issued by the German Horse Society (FN) on horses. By comparing these with philosophies of masters of classical riding such as La Gueriniere and Baucher, he shows possible solutions to the challenging situation of modern competitive dressage. After describing the effects of modern dressage, breeding, and business, the author suggests a classical alternative—the philosophy of "legerity." Customer Reviews (11)
