5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Work
This book is absolutely amazing.Hands down, awesome book.I read it twice! It's a book that speaks to everyone and on so many different levels.Yay to Enzo! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dogone good book !
This was another book that had been recommended and I dragged my feet about reading it thinking that it was probably going to be a disappointment. I was certainly wrong ! It was an "on target" book that brought forth all sorts of empathy for the characters portrayed in the book. I laughed out loud, became angry with the circumstances that happened to the characters, and wanted things to be different or at least have a different ending. Of course, that would have defeated the purpose of the story which clearly showed how to honorably deal with the cards that are dealt to you, good or bad, fair or unjust ! Everytime I read a book with this type of plot, I question myself and ask: How would I deal with the circumstances ? How could I handle the tragedy ? How would I relish the success ? I only hope that I could deal with the matters as well as the characters in the book. I also wish that I had the introspection and vision of the dog narrating the story ! This was a spot on good book ! Highly recommend !

5-0 out of 5 stars clever book for the dog lover
This is a well-written story, showing the world from a four-legged friend's perspective. It was a quick read but well worth it.I recommend this for any dog lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Think like a dog
I loved this book.It was an easy read that was simultaneously funny and sad, and ten pages in you really feel it was written by a dog.If you love to see a dog riding in a car with his head sticking out the window and a big smile on his face, read this book.If you like twists and turns in a story about intertwined relationships, read the book. And if you want to know what a race car driver is thinking about while racing, you guessed it.Read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best books I have read in a long time

5-0 out of 5 stars The inside track
Greyhounds have been revered since ancient times where they appear on the walls of the tombs of the Pharos. For Henry VIII they were his favourite hunting dogs. But in Laura Thompson's book we find a personal testament to a more modern chapter in the history of this noble creature.

Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom came to prominence in the dark economic recession of the 30's, being in some ways a cameo of its elder sister - horse racing. Sharing a deep and longstanding affiliation with Ireland champion racing greyhounds, like cup-winning racehorses, often drew their first breath on the other side of the Irish Sea.

Laura Thompson's book takes us right into the heart of people, places and of course the dogs she knew as a child. With the hindsight of an age in which some of the great Stadia like White City in West London have already been lost, she takes us on a journey which immortalises a generation of owners and trainers.

For anybody who has ever spent an evening at a Greyhound Stadium and wondered what lay behind it all.. this book is the inside track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give The Dogs five bones - !
This is not just a history of greyhound racing, it is a deeply moving personal insight into Laura Thompson, her love for dogs and her love for the father who owned and raced them. The book is Fever Pitch with heart; I wept buckets reading the damn thing. It is full of compassion for the greyhounds who run in the name of business and sport, and full of guilt for the fact that they give so much pleasure while being used, all too often, as playthings. It is also a journey into a completely separate world of which I hitherto knew nothing, and which came wonderfully alive for me. I found this book by accident in a second hand shop and couldn't help myself from wanting to say something about it - it is really beautiful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to read
We haven't decided if we're going to adopt a racing greyhound, so we got this book as part of our research. It has been a very helpful and easy read.It gives lots of insight into the unique characteristics of this wonderful breed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Labor of Love
Recently, my family turned towards the idea of adopting a retired racing greyhound. In part this was motivated by the sentiment of adopting a dog in need, and in part it was because the greyhound has a reputation for being a good family dog, and one that, contrary to expectation, enjoys lounging around.A local greyhound rescue association, as part of its extensive screening process for families that wish to adopt, requires that every prospective adopter read this book by Cynthia A. Branigan.

ADOPTING THE RACING GREYHOUND turned out not at all to be a chore.Sure, we had the motivation to read this book, but in reading it it helped tremendously that Branigan is an able writer and that her keen passion for greyhounds shows through her craft. This is a short work--the text runs only 153 pages, with illustrations--but covers well the main points to be considered in adopting a greyhound. In addition to practical help with introducing a dog into the home and to children, and some basic guidance about the care and feeding of the dog, Branigan also provides some history on the breed and a description of the racing life of greyhounds. She delivers the latter without editorializing on the morality of dog racing; she is rather more interested in just helping these animals in their post-racing lives.Branigan is frank about the challenges inherent in raising a dog that has been bred for the track--she has seen too many adoptions fail because families were unprepared--but also celebrates the joy of life with a dog that has been well matched for his or her new home.By titling her last chapter "Having Fun," Branigan underscores her ultimate aim: to create a happy and safe home for dog and adopting family.

The book's design could have been improved with the use of standardized headers and sub-headings; as it is the fonts of these titles vary and it's not always apparent whether a new section is subordinate to the previous one. Also, though the print quality is fine for the text, it does not do justice to the photographs.A family, like ours, eagerly anticipating the arrival of a greyhound in our home, would have enjoyed viewing higher quality illustrations. These are minor quibbles with what is otherwise a fine book.I am very happy that our greyhound rescue association required us to read it, and I recommend it to all who are interested in adopting this wonderful animal.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREYT READ
Excellent and informative.
However, the 'as new' copy of the book I received was written in and the text was highlighted in several places.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevent information
This book really covers everything you need to know before deciding to adopt. However, this book isn't an advertisement trying to con everyone into getting one.It just lays out what to expect, what you'll need, and what the complications may be. There is a great section on health that every greyhound owner should know.I cannot say enough good things about this book.

It had been six years since newspaper reporter Brian Patrick O'Donoghue mushed to a last place finish in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Yearning to challenge himself anew, he enters the Yukon Quest, a more brutal 1,000-mile run between Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and Fairbanks, Alaska. With wry humor and diminishing expectations, O'Donoghue shares the trail with Khan, Hobbes, Scrimshaw, Cyclone, and ten other excitable Alaska huskies, plus a diverse collection of rival racers and resident bush rats. The mushers' strategies, dreams and disappointments, the antics of the dogs, and the drama of the race are all part of this punishing personal journey. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Truthful account of one man's Quest
This book tells the story of one man's first experience of the Yukon Quest, and the problems and triumphs he encountered along the way. Very informative for some-one like myself (an armchair musher!)covering aspects which would never occur to me i.e. arranging food drops in advance!

A real page turner, i finished reading the book in one day.

2-0 out of 5 stars Honest Dogs; Harsh Words
The real problem with this book lies not in his treatment of his dogs, but in his treatment of other mushers. It is odd that he could be so criticalof so many of the other mushers from the back of the pack. While not quitean armchair quarterback, he was definitely throwing some cheap shots fromthe sled runners. I had a suspicion while reading this book that he wassearching for a way to justify his utter lack of speed, instead of justreveling in the moment. While it is nice to hear about a musher that caresdeeply about his dogs (as most do), I felt that he simply did not have therapport with his dogs that most succesful mushers have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for dog lovers & armchair adventurers.
In Honest Dogs: A Story Of Triumph And Regret From The World's Toughest Sled Dog Race, journalist and family man Brian O'Donoghue shares the story of his experiences upon entering the Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race at the ageof 41. Brian writes with wry humor of sharing the trail with his Alaskanhuskies Khan, Hobbes, Scrimshaw, and Cyclone, as well as a diversecollection of rival racers and resident bush rats. Honest Dogs is a candid, vivid account of a punishing personal journey and relates the strategies, dreams, and disappoints of the contestants, the antics of the furry canineathletes, the sheer drama of the race, and the unworldly wilderness settingin which Brian and his dogs found themselves. Honest Dogs is highlyrecommended reading for armchair adventurers and dog lovers everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars I just loved it!
This is an amazing book!--I had no idea what it takes to compete in a major sled dog race. All those pictures we see of the "romance" of sled dog competitions don't even begin to cover the fatigue (of dogs andpeople), the logistics and the problems. It must be an incredibleexperience to even finish in a race like this. I'm glad the author let meexperience a little bit of it through his book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for sled dog racing fans
Once in a while you come across a book that you are sorry to see end.Honest dogs was one of those books for me.The chapter on going over american summit was very exciting. When I was in Anchorage for the start ofthis years Iditarod I got to see and pet O'donogue's lead dog"Khan". in person After reading this fine book I want to moveto Two Rivers,Alaska and take up Mushing myself

5-0 out of 5 stars Love--for Real: a comprehensive guide on the ownership of retired racing greyhounds
comprehensive, yet interesting--a very honest and informative guide for the retired racing greyhound owner (or potential owner).

4-0 out of 5 stars Should You and How to Raise a Needlenose
Adopting a rescue Greyhound after the conclusion of its career on the track is not like adopting any other kind of dog, we're told.I don't personally know how true that is; it's been ages--since I was a child--that I've had a dog.But it makes sense: the Greyhound has lived its youth and often much of its adult life in a racing environment, and is used to calling a crate home, living mostly with other dogs in a track kennel, and having periodic short bursts of activity.Bringing an animal from that environment into a home, where it will live intimately with people and have to learn manners, must be significantly different from raising a dog that's always lived in a house.Knowing whether one is ready for that challenge and, having decided one is ready, how to do it is the purpose of Lee Livingood's RETIRED RACING GREYHOUNDS FOR DUMMIES.

Livingood's book covers the following topics in some depth: (a) whether a retired racing Greyhound is the right dog for one's life situation, (b) preparing one's home for a Greyhound, (c) basic training ("click-and-treat approach), (d) grooming, feeding and keeping your dog healthy, (e) dealing with health emergencies and end of life matters, and (f) traveling with your Greyhound. The book mentions dealing with behavioral issues, and the challenge of raising a needlenose in an environment with young children, but does not go into any great depth on those topics. The prospective adopter will need to seek other resources to supplement the information here; the author provides some print and multimedia resources in the back of the book.(Curiously, Livingood doesn't list other books on raising Greyhounds.)Livingood does a great job inspiring the prospective adopter with the joys of raising a Greyhound without overselling the idea; the Greyhound is not the best breed choice (nor is a dog the best pet) for all individuals and families and in all situations.

What RETIRED RACING GREYHOUNDS FOR DUMMIES lacks are handy checklists.I would have appreciated checklists for, for instance, (1) what to buy before your Greyhound's arrival, (2) skills your dog should acquire and the steps in training her, and (3) health and general grooming procedures. These are topics covered in the text, but checklists in the back matter of the book would have been most welcomed.

As might be expected, Livingood's advice doesn't always agree with other guides to raising Greyhounds on the market.Another excellent, if much shorter book, is Cynthia A. Branigan's ADOPTING THE RACING GREYHOUND.One will occasionally find that the two experts do not agree, for instance, whether a wire or a plastic crate is the best choice for your Greyhound friend. To their credit, the two authors admit that some of the advice they dish out is not hard-and-fast and is preference based on their own extensive experiences raising Greyhounds.I would recommend reading these two books (at least), and making one's decisions informed by the views of these experts.

(I've never been particularly enamored of the title of this series, and am amazed that we readers would, in purchasing such books, allow ourselves to be insulted in that way. Then again, maybe I should lighten up.I must say, one of the things I like about this particular volume is the author's name.Livingood is an awesome name.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to get when adopting a Greyhound
This book is very informational.I would reccomend it to anyone thinking about adopting a Greyhound!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the Book!
It may be for dummies, but they never treat you like an idiot. It is full of great information about the breed, the needs of the dog, the health issues, the reality of being an ex racer, it is very comprehensive. It has great notes and ideas. This is a really great book that any greyhound owner could keep on their book shelf and go back to for years to come. But it is really suited for the person that thinks they want one, but isn't sure.

You're reading this review because you're thinking of getting a greyhound?Buy the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information!
Lots of things in this book made me smile, which made me want a greyhound more. But also prepared me for what was to come. So over all a VERY Good book for Info. Will recommend to anyone looking into adobting a retired racer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These guys are crazy!
This book comes highly recommended!!!

If you enjoy hearing true tales of wild heroics this book is for you.I read it page after page and laughed as the author so vividly drew me into each scene with these crazy Iditarod pilots.

Some of the stories are incredible and it really makes you want to go to Alaska to encounter some of this wild west dog sled fanaticism.

Don't miss this one...it is very enjoyable.Worthy of passing on to someone else after it's read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift
I purchased this book for my father, for Father's Day, and it turns out he has a personal connection to one of the book's subjects.I could not have been more pleased! He has been reading it voraciously and enjoying everypage.Dad's are always hard to buy for and it's great to hit the nail onthe head once in awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilot's Perspective
I like adventure books, especially those that deal with northern flying. This title clearly fell into that catagory. The autor gave us a perspective of the Iditarod race that only a pilot could. As a pilot whohas flown in Alaska I found all of his flying information to be accurate. But best of all the book was very well written. The author has polishedhis work. The chapters are all very readable and fascinating.I wouldrecommend this book to anyone whose interests run along the same lines asmine do; flying, Alaska, adventure and the Iditarod. My only complaint isa complete lack of pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a good book on a subject not easy to record.
Ted acquaints the reader with stories that could only come from being a pilot himself.Having done some flying in the Alaskan bush, I became acquainted with the author and know of his intense love of the subject.Irecommend readers also read "The Eye of the Rainbow", TedMatson's first writing. You will have a greater respect of the Alaskanadventurer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal cruelty and problem gambling have never been so funny.
A couple years ago banning greyhound racing was put to a vote here in MA. My dad used to take me to the track as a kid and I hadn't given the sport a thought since then, despite my interest in dogs. So I decided to read up on the sport to find out why or if it should be banned. This book is about greyhound racing in England, but that hardly makes it irrelevant to the sport here in the U.S.
I read one book previous to this about the sport which proved to be neither entertaining or informative but luckily this book proved to be both in a big way. As the previous reviewer wrote this book is written in the gonzo style of journalism which is fine because the author is one intelligent, humorous and interesting fellow.
His intention is not to do an expose nor does he. He doesn't approach the sport with any particular bias and gives it a more than fair treatment. His way of exploring the sport is by actually buying a racing greyhound and experiencing being a smalltime owner. He gets a little more than he bargains for along the way by getting more caught up in it than he expected.
If you have any curiosity about what goes on behind the scenes in greyhound racing you can learn it from this book. If you enjoy a book that makes you laugh out loud with irreverent humor it does that too. If you are interested in an intelligent viewpoint on a variety of current issues you get that as well. If you are humorless about controversial subjects you should still read this book just because its good and consider the fact that there is something to be said about not preaching to the choir.
As a bonus there is a chapter where he possibly unadvisedly investigates a hare coursing event in the boonies. That chapter alone provides enough yucks to be worth the price of the book. A highly recommended read, and I can't wait to read his previous book about his experience as a boxer.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining and insightful
David Matthews has a wonderful way with words.Pulling on all kinds of diverse cultural references through his autobiographical style of writing which is reminescent of Hunter S Thompson, and which is a joy to follow. His work is highly personal, making astute cultural observations throughout. His honesty is so profound and without fear that you feel more like you are reading his journal. ... Jim Welch has made this such an easy read and understandable to even none mushers. As a sprint musher myself I could take a lot from this book and apply it to my own training with my dogs. He describes and explains training situations with great examples. He talks on a comfortable level and has a true passion for dogs.

Jim is a great trainer and musher and surely this is a book to read by any musher or dog lover. As a trainer myself I think he truly grasp the concept of training dogs in a positive way by doing what most dogs love called mushing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
This is a great read, it was the first book that I brought on mushing a few years ago - lots of handy information from Training to feeding and everything inbetween.I still read it every off season before coming back into training and I pick up more each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for skijoring too
Much of the info in this book applies to skijoring as well.Recommended by the skijoring book Ski Spot Run.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a Sprint Musher
This is a great book with some great information. It talks about what makes a good dog, running the dogs, training puppies, etc. It is more geared towards sprint mushing, but a distance racer can still get some good ideas from it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to training racing sled dogs
Jim Welch has written a clear and concisebook on training sled dogs to race. There arespecific examples to clarify most techniques and ample support for the effectiveness of each method. He has successfully condensed the knowledge of many of the world's top mushers into a relatively short book. 4-0 out of 5 stars history of the Iditarod============facts correct
We lived in Wasilla, Ak. for 7 years, and am quite familiar with the Iditarod. This book was well written and lots of good pictures. However, the author left out something very, very important. When he told about the Iditarod, which was organized in1973--------------where is the name of the father of the Iditarod, Joe Redington? It was his idea, and through lots of persistance, talk, money, etc. it became a reality.
Today, his son and grandson are a part. There should be a retraction of some kind.He not only started the race, but helped several young mushers and they would come to his place out on Knik Rd and he trained them, and even made the dogs
available.
I am very disappointed that his name was not mentioned anywhere.
Really enjoyed the book except for that point-------------get your history together before writing.
Thanks-------------Bobbie

2-0 out of 5 stars Title misleading?
I was not as impressed with this book as I was with Margaret Bonham's other book, The Simple Guide to Getting Active With Your Dog. My first gripe is the layout was too "busy". There were so many pictures, side columns and information boxes that it was a bit hard to find the "meat" of the book. The second reason I was disappointed is because I came to it with wrong expectations. I was looking for a book to show me how to start teaching my puppy recreational agility. This book is entirely about competition agility. I would also have to say it is not a good book for a complete beginner. I knew nothing about agility when I borrowed this book and I still had many, many questions after I finished it. I came away with the feeling that if I had known something about agility first I would have gotten much more out of the book. I am thankful I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it. I am planning to borrow it again now that I know more about agility and see what a second reading will do for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginners
I like the way it is written and the pictures to show what the author is talking about.

Is helping both my dog and I as we start down the Agility Road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dog Agility
If you're interested in competing, this is a very good book to get started with and to use in conjunction with agility classes. If, like me, you just want to know more about the sport and maybe do a bit of backyard agility with your dog for fun and to give her an occupation other than chewing everything in sight, then it's really too advanced!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good instructions
It gives good instruction for teaching a dog the begining of Dog agility. It makes anyone feel as though you can understand and perform any of the tasks written and described. It also teaches all of the basics of the sport.Very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Dog and Handler - Agility
I bought this book a 1 1/2 years ago because it was recommended by a local trainer and handler. It sat through my first little class of agility at the local Humane society. But, my dog loved Agility so much, I found a need to look further. What a great book for someone with little time to spend reading and a great deal of learning to be done with an active dog. It has helpful tip boxes. So, if like me, you don't read it by the chapter, but by need you get to what you are looking for fast.Clear easy language. The Contents pages are listed under concise titles and appendixes are straight forward and helpful. The equipment list for simple backyard stuff... I can actually build. The useful info on various National club's focus and their differences; and where to get more info... great stuff. Why write a review now... well, I am buying another book for a friend who is getting into agility and buying the next book too for me. And it's on sale...a bargain especially if you think how little time the class instructor has to instruct you on handling your dog. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the winter of the three dogs
The Three Dogs were big and muscular, there was Bruno, Kalia but that they look and sound cool. The book gets more better towards the end when the three dogs won the sledding contest at Colorada. Kalia is a husky, which is a type of a wolf. Bruno looks like a black lab mixed with husky. I wish I could have these dogs from The Three Dog Winter. This is a good book.I will rate it a five.
